He's hoping to get a Bulbasaur from Professor Oak before he set out away from his orphanage to find out what to do with his little life. He has never been anywhere outside of Pallet Town, and even then just only got permission. He finds the wilderness interesting but at the same time scary. Since when he wandered off it cost him his parents' lives.
