background: i dislike sonic.exe, all the offshoots of it, and it's fandom. i made this oc named ".GEN" back in february out of spite, and forgot to do anything with him till now. the following is gen's entire story, my goal was to make a realistic and grounded version of sonic.exe, and i was inspired by the memz virus in this writing. i hope you like it!
A post was left on the general boards on a now defunct gaming forum, sometime in mid 2014. The thread it was left on was titled “What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you?”. The post in question was a reply left by user “Pyroz r Kool”. The following text contains Pyro’s unedited post in its entirety.

I don’t think my story is even nearly as weird as anyone else’s here, but i do want to share it because damn, i really wish i had any solid proof it even happened.
It was around 2 years ago, i was playing some Gmod with some of my friends. It was getting late (we had been playing for around 12 hours at this point) so we decided to call it a night. Most of my group went to sleep, but me and my friend Lockjaw089 decided to stay up and chat a bit more. We decided to call each other, so we switched over from Steam to Skype and began talking about whatever.
I remember getting on the topic of childhood video games. Lock was telling me about all these games he had as a kid, how great Red Dead Revolver was, how World of Warcraft got him into PC gaming, pretty standard shit you hear people talk about. I’m a little bit older than Lock, he had just graduated, i was already in college, so the first game i thought up was the original Sonic the Hedgehog. I talked about it so much that i began to miss it, and i decided to see if i could find a way to play it again.
I think i googled something like “Sonic the hedgehog 1991 rom” and i clicked on one of the first things that came up, it was some website named “RomsFree” or something along those lines. It doesn’t really matter what it was called, the website is gone now. The moment i clicked onto this website, i was bombarded by ads. The entire screen was filled up with ads, hot girls in my area, driver update, you may have a virus, shit like that, and with a redirect whenever i clicked anything on the page to boot. Despite all this i did manage to install the game, and i decided to play it while talking to Lock, who was eagerly anticipating the commentary of my very poor gameplay.
The file was called “Sonic.gen.exe”, and i was stupid enough to fully install and run it. The game was mostly normal, but it had oddities that were noticeable enough to make me and Lock mildly uncomfortable. First off, Sonic’s arms were blue. This was very obviously way before Sonic Boom was announced so it was a little bit weird. The levels had very small alterations that were just noticeable enough to feel off, like the loop on Green Hill Act 1 being completely absent. The music was very slightly off, it sounded almost like a beta version of the finished tracks. All the songs were missing different beats and instruments, all of them were really hard to listen to. The weirdest thing was the game's glitches and performance, Sonic would repeatedly rubber band like he was lagging in COD and that made a ton of levels frustrating to play. The game got slower and laggier as i progressed, and the rubberbanding would happen even more. Eventually, once i got to the end and beat Eggman for the last time, my computer bluescreened.
That’s when it hit me, “oh shit, i downloaded a virus!” and i restarted my computer as fast as possible to try and see if i could fix it. Unfortunately, i was too late the moment i ran the game, because when it booted back up i was just left with a small gif of sonic laying down and wagging his finger repeatedly. No login screen or anything, the entire thing was fried. I was pretty pissed considering i had only got my computer last year, not to mention i was still on the call with Lock when this happened.
Luckily my brother was apart of the group, so he was able to let everyone know why i was gone for a couple of weeks, but man did that suck. The worst part is my friends still taunt me about it to this day lol.”
