I also like gen 5, I really don't understand the hate, while sure some Pokémon were bad, most were quite good, plus it added triple battles and the new look was great!

Just go for whichever one you like or suits you (as long as it's open), don't be afraid to just jump in, I've found Pokecharms is a really welcoming community (that really didn't answer your question did it?)
