Having issues beating the gym leaders and Elite Four? Your rival giving you trouble? Or are the villainous team's evil schemes making your life a living hell? Well, this is the topic for you. Here is some basic advice for in-game teams, as well as some general basics to aid players in getting through the main game(s.)

- If you're stuck at a certain point in the game, the easiest way to get by is usually to level up a bit more - while grinding is certainly never a fun thing to have to do unless you have the patience of a saint, it's usually the best way to get past an obstacle that's causing you problems since it costs you nothing but time.

- Although almost anything can work in-game (and by almost, I mean anything that isn't a team of 6 Magikarp basically) it's usually better to get your movesets at least close to what would be seen competitively. Whilst this obviously won't be possible for most of your team members due to the limited resources you are granted in-game, it goes without saying that a moveset more akin to a competitive moveset will help you a lot more than a moveset consisting of four attacks all of the same type for instance.

- Note that the AI of the CPU opponents in almost all the games is somewhat lacklustre at best - oftentimes, you can gain an advantage over the AI by simply outsmarting it in battle where appropriate. Don't assume that your team is the problem if you begin to run into difficulties - sometimes, a change in your strategy and approach can be the key to success.

- This usually goes without saying, but make sure your stock of items is kept topped up - the last thing you'll want to do is to end up facing a legendary Pokemon with hardly any Poke Balls in your bag, or facing a gym leader with no Potions, Full Heals or Revives on hand. Make sure you're always prepared, and don't be afraid of buying too many items - any surplus may end up being useful later on.

I have a couple of points to add. :)

- As KoL mentioned for the movesets, it's always helpful to have teams that cover a wide variety of types, strengths, and resistances. While you can definitely get by with only a few types of Pokemon (if not just one), the most balanced team is going to have Pokemon with types that compliment each other. Have a big Fire-type weakness on your team? Get a Water-type then. Having trouble with Ground-type attacks? Grab a Flying-type Pokemon or one with the levitate ability. Think about your weaknesses and try to cover them as best as possible.

- A lot of newer players have a tendency to overlevel their starter Pokemon and underlevel the rest of their team. This can work just fine in most cases, but if you're a bit shaky with the gameplay it might also lead you into problems. Do yourself a favour and try to level up all of the Pokemon on your team evenly. It can take a bit of extra work, but it'll certainly pay off once you reach the more difficult portions of the game.
