To answer your first question, no, they don't have to be the same. As long as it's realistic enough, I'm okay with it.
As for your second question, I have an idea to make this last. Since the Lance king took over, perhaps he used the magic in the other three kings to create three... say, generals? One with Heart-themed abilities, one with Diamond-themed powers, and one with Club-themed magic. And I plan to incorporate the secret boss in the actual game in some way.
