EV questions.

Ok I am new to the whole EV thing and I have been studying it and I think I got it, but I have some questions on possibly good combos. Please tell me if these can be good or not even worth trying.

First I would catch a pokemon that can get good attack moves and then get up his defense and hp maxed. Would this pokemon be able to deal damage ( a little ) and take a lot of it? But would this be smart.

Another idea I had was a all out attack EV pokemon where I would max Attack and Hp or defense. If I did Attack and HP I can last a while and do good damage ( I think =S) and if I did attack and defense I should be able to deal damage and they wouldn't be able to touch me (right?)

Well this pretty much raps it up please tell me if these builds would work.

It wouldn't be smart to invest EVs into Defense for a sweeper because most sweepers already have poor Defense stats and could do without the Defense. If those EVs are placed into attack, they can dish out more damage per attack than they could if they didn't have the EVs. Also, most sweepers would want to have Max Speed as well to outrun other opponents. Now if the Pokemon is Bulky (High attack and High defense, but a little slow [80-100 base speed]), then you could invest EVs into the HP to make up for the fact that it has to move last instead of first.

Key Rule: Almost all sweepers want a high as possible Base Speed and high as possible Base Attack.

Also, this link provides information about EVs and IVs if you need it.

I am kind of a noob at all this pokemon talk, I am guessing a sweeper is a pokemon that you put out last?

And also, can you EV train on old school games? ( Kind of an old schooler myself since I misplaced Pearl, but since I found this I am looking wildly for it ^_^)

Sweepers are Pokemon that are meant to dish out damage, not take damage.

And I'm positive you can EV train in Generation 3, not positive about Gen 1 or Gen 2.

Well i have to give up searching for Pearl now, my parents are getting mad that I am looking for it, I am going to try emerald though.

EV's did indeed exist during Generations I and II, but not quite in the way we know them today:

I got 2 other questions.

In generation 3 to train HP do I train on zigzagoon and for defense train on geodude?

And also when I am EV training lets say a Ralts, can I put a EXP share on him and have another pokemon fight, or does the pokemon I am EV training have to actually fight?

First, you can not EV train a pokemon in HP. Second, Geodude works, but if you wanted A LOT of EV points, defeat something like a Golem, Metagross, or Aggron.

I do not know the answer to the second question.

I can answer your second question;

And also when I am EV training lets say a Ralts, can I put a EXP share on him and have another pokemon fight, or does the pokemon I am EV training have to actually fight?

Yes, EXP share still gives the EVs to the pokemon, while the other pokemon fights. It's a handy way of EV training weaker pokemon, say one you've just hatched from an egg.

Typhosionlover; I'm pretty sure you can train a Pokemon in HP.
