Previously Night's Shadow
Several years after the main timeline…
Pet Shop and NEST continued their struggles, both desperately trying to overpower the other with their own morals. Each battle, each small journey into the outside world, NEST had to cover up before the media could report an insect-human sighting. Just one time could be disastrous— but no one can keep that up forever. NEST slipped up, a too-eager reporter leaked the story, and all of a sudden, insect humans were top news. As the conflicts between NEST and Pet Shop grew more heated, harder to cover up, and the stories were already out, more and more of the clashes were recorded and leaked to the media. NEST redoubled their efforts to gather and safeguard as many insect humans they could, and Pet Shop did the same. But now there was a third party: the government. Agents scouted as many areas as they could reach, searching for insect humans to take into custody. Some of them went willingly, others… not so much.
NEST tried to negotiate with the government, Suchan Jang its spokesperson, but Pet Shop had other plans. Breeder released feed-trained insect humans in the capital, given only the orders to kill. Unknowing that NEST and Pet Shop were two different organizations, the government’s forces, sure they had been betrayed, were ordered to wipe out the attacking insect humans as monsters, wild beasts. Suchan Jang was caught in the crossfire.
Thus began the active hunt for insect humans, under the presumption that they were all beasts. Those that hadn’t found or been found by NEST hid themselves away, or tried to escape into neighboring countries who were far less aware of their existence. Pet Shop fought back while NEST hunkered down and fortified their defenses— but eventually, Pet Shop’s numbers were whittled down, Breeder killed, and his forces devolving into chaos.
There was a period of peace, the government sure they had neutralized the threat. But when an event at a nearby elementary school escalated too far, everything turned around again. A child had stood up to her bully, but in doing so, two pairs of iridescent wings were revealed, hidden beneath her jacket. The girl was immediately detained, and the hunt was back on again, far more covertly.
NEST had slowly become used to the peace, and while still wary, were nowhere near as well-protected as they had once been. Government agents infiltrated, and when they were discovered, were detained and imprisoned humanely. However, when the government hadn’t heard from their agents in too long, they assumed that they were dead, and sent in troops to eradicate NEST.
The protection units did their best to fend them off, but the civilians were in panic. The government had blocked as many of the secret entrances as they had found out about, and the others were packed with insect humans trying their darndest to save themselves. They ran, many of them carrying children and with a spouse— some of the children not their own, just unlucky kids who had gotten a faceful of the dreaded Jungle Juice that had started this whole mess.
Some of them escaped. Most of them did not.
Now, ten years later, the buzz about insect humans had died down. Small groups of them had gathered, visionaries aligning them to form new bases, modeled after NEST. Insect human scientists worked together to recreate the Cinderella formula, the coveted cure. Hidden, underground bases were founded all over East Asia, growing into a network of small towns, hidden from the outside world.
But of course, not all the insect humans were pure of heart, just trying to build a new life. Some were bitter about the Great Entonoid Genocide, and became Pet Shop sympathizers, forming gangs with others and ex-members who wanted to form a new world where strength dictated all, or just stewing in their hatred for years. Others still were government agents, willing insect-human prisoners who had agreed to infiltrate the HIVE to pass updates to their superiors in exchange for amnesty.
And the majority. Young people desperate for an escape. Not so young when turned that they’re used to it, but not so old that they’ve accepted that they’ll be entonoid forever. These college age students enrolled in the university in one of HIVE’s small towns, named NEONEST, after the original. The valedictorian from each grade receives the cure, becomes human again. Many of the interconnected towns also have similar academies, offering Cinderella to the highest performer.
The tensions are growing, as each individual puts in their bid for survival. Will you strive to become human through petty, educational competition? Will you seek to steal the cure for your government, convinced they could find a way to manufacture more? Or will you wait for the right moment with your comrades in arms to rise up, and make the world a place where insect humans rule based on strength alone? Or maybe, just maybe, you’re just along for the ride, an adrenaline junkie whose entonoid transformation was the best thing that ever happened to you.
Welcome to NEONEST, new freshman. Which path are you on?
And welcome to the world of Jungle Juice, a webtoon where a bug spray advertised to kill all insects had unintended side effects— and ended up merging the DNA of the insect killed with the nearest human. Your character should be ~18-22 to be a freshman at NEONEST, either merged with an insect at a young age or being the child of an insect human (or two, in which your character may be a human-insect hybridization between two insects). They would have been 8 to 12 during the Entonoid Genocide. You don’t have to research your insect(s) extensively, of course, but please be realistic. They won’t be able to control fire because they were merged with a fire ant, but they could shoot painful acid like a fire ant.
Alrighty folks, here goes nothin’! The first Night RP in God knows how long pft anyway we’ll see if I can keep this running longer than a week but hey yk what low pressure, join if you feel like, whatevs
If you’ve got any questions about the series, @Schrift and I are both well-versed in its lore. Any questions about the plot, hit me and I’ll do my best to answer.
Rules:
-Pokecharms rules (gasp, no way!)
-Romance is allowed, keep it PG-13.
-Ya don’t have to be an entomologist but keep the powers realistic, think of ‘em like insect-based mutant quirks from MHA.
-On that same note, please don’t push to be OP. If you’re a dragonfly mutant that can fly really fast and can see well, that’s cool, makes sense; but your speed won’t guarantee an auto-hit on whoever you target and your sight won’t let you see through things or predict exact positions without fail. This is an RP, it’s fun! Not a competition.
-Put “frog legs” in your bio to show you read the rules ♥
-No character limit, just make sure you can handle all of em!
-The majority of the plot will be taking place within the freshman class, but if you want to make older or younger side characters or NPCs, go for it! Any and all creativity to worldbuild or forward individual character plots is totally welcome!
-This’ll be a fairly classic superpowered school RP, but will have a lot more freedom, be more character-driven. The school life could delve into chaos at the whim of any character! Go wild with motivations, bonds, and future (evil or otherwise >) plans.
