Being able to improvise and coordinate is a valuable skill. You really just need one of the characters to take charge and start making calls, even if that call is to retreat and re-group so you can make an actual plan. Another option would be to use signals or simple calls that allow basic coordination without giving away everything to the enemy.

E.g. you could have a character shout out for a certain number of people to engage, while the others defend the convo or get them to safety.

You hardly need a detailed multi-step plan of any kind.
