The crash of waves beat a steady rhythm against the ship’s hull and on the deck Esther sat cross-legged in a lounge chair, both her Pokéballs gripped tightly in hand.
It wasn’t necessary that she hold the Pokéballs in her hand since the Synchronization bond was an intimacy deeper than touch; but, Esther found that the weight of the Pokéballs, the cool gloss of steel, and the occasional twitch from the Pokémon within, they came together as a strong focus for her senses. And those senses brushed against two bundles of emotion. Although she read both bundles as ‘happy’, they conveyed that happiness in vastly different ways.
Pyrrha was a familiar confidence; she exuded an infectious intensity that, upon delving deeper, made Esther heady with an air of invincibility. The Trapinch was less overpowering, but her giddiness was just as infectious. She was just so…jolly.
Just brushing the outer core of her mind bombarded Esther with a whirlwind of curiosity. The little bug had tapped into Esther’s senses and an inquisitive backlog was beginning to form.
They weren’t quite questions, her new catch hadn’t picked up on how to use words yet; instead, images had been thrust forward along with strong, emotional cues. Doors, lightbulbs, beds, trash cans…nothing escaped her attention. Suddenly, as if picking up on her attention, a single memory was pushed to the forefront, a playback of the music Esther had played during the battle.
“Oh? You liked that one, huh?” Chuckling, Esther gathered her thoughts and pushed back music. It was a mess of sounds and emotions, as music often was, but it was the best Esther could do.
“Sorry, it’s a bit hard to explain.”
As the Trapinch digested the essence of music, Esther paged into her Pokédex, eager to see what information it could provide on her new companion.
Bzt~* Trapinch, the Ant Pit Pokémon, a ground type. Its jaws are strong enough to crush rocks but so heavy that it can't get up if it flips over. *~Bzt
“Wha—just a ground type?”
Stunned by the revelation, Esther quickly swapped over the entry for Trapinch’s evolution, Vibrava. Surely, it gained the bug typing upon evolution, right?
Bzt~* Vibrava, the Vibration Pokémon, a ground and dragon type. To help make its wings grow, it dissolves quantities of prey in its digestive juices and guzzles them down every day. *~Bzt
“A dragon-type!?” Esther scoffed, folding her arms. “Well, that’s just stupid, why the hell would it not be a bug-type!”
