Racism - A Discusion in Light of Recent Events

Those of you living in the US may be more aware of this incident than those elsewhere in the world, but I was wondering what peoples thoughts on the incident were and maybe thoughts on a broader scale.

2009 Henry Louis Gates, Jr. arrest by Cambridge police

As far as the incident itself is concerned, I feel that it could have been easily avoided had both parties simply kept a level head. Professor Gates should not assume that because he is a Harvard Professor that he is above the law. (Also, if the comments insulting Sgt. Crowley's mother are actually true, then that was just uncalled for.)

I take Sgt. Crowley's side in this. As a Police officer faced with someone refusing to cooperate there are few options, especially after a number of fair warnings.

I also feel that President Obama's comment on the incident without know all the facts was a huge mistake on his part. As the head of the Executive branch, he should be backing his own people, at least in pubilc. If he really has an issue, then they can be talked to privately, without a mockery being made in front of national news.

On a larger scale I would just like to say that I firmly believe that assuming someone is a Racist based on the fact that they are white is Racism.

Any thoughts?

I'd have arrested him just for being a dick about it.

Somehow I doubt racism had anything to do without outside of his own insecure mind.

There was nothing racist about it. There had been a number of break-ins in the area and a neighbor mistook the professor as breaking into the house so they called the police. It was a mistake in identity really.

Gates got angry with the police because they were trying to arrest him in his own home. This led to the charges of disorderly conduct. I would have gotten mad too if cops were trying to arrest me for a crime I didn't commit. I would have also done my job by arresting the guy if I was a cop.

What I do agree with is that President Obama should not have commented the way he did when just a minute before he even said he didn't have all the details. I heard that Gates was a friend of his, so I can understand taking your friend's side, but there are still things that a President should not be saying on National TV.

I agree with Psycho. It was just a misunderstanding, but U.s.a was at the verge of a racial riot. Or so i heard. Rumours form so quickly here in Europe, TV can harly tell the truth.

Personally I like how Obama brought them round to the white house for beers... The US has an awesome president, he drinks, and he's a marlboro man =)
Totally better than non-drinking presidents.

Hardly my fellow internet user That incident was so minuscule that most people didn't even notice it. Between Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson trying to blow smoke up people's asses about stupid stuff like the "Krammer incident" it would take white supremacists with M16's shooting blacks and others that aren't white in the streets for people to notice
