Ask to Join Warrior Cats: Plains of Fire RP thread

Discussion: https://pokecharms.com/threads/warrior-cats-plains-of-fire.23067/

A calico licked her paw as she looked over her clan's territory. So many dangers were popping up. CloudClan was always itching for a fight, MistClan was starting to get irritated at them, and she was certain there were some rouges around. The leader narrowed her eyes. Maybe she should try talking down each of the threats? The Gathering was going to start the very next night and she could definitely put out a patrol, with her at its lead. Yeah, that was a good idea. Petalstar gave herself a nod before letting her deputy, Stormclaw, know. "Blazeclaw, Rainfall, Robinflight, Shadeflicker, and Thornheart, get your apprentice and then we're going on a patrol."

Rainfall yawned and stretched as she stepped into the morning sun. It was nice to be out of the cave-like den. At least it protected her from the rain and rare fire. Her blue eyes swept across the camp, looking for her apprentice. Goldpaw, in her opinion, was a rambunctious thing. Made her extremely mad at times, but he was endearing. She twitched her whiskers at the thought. She heard herself being called by Petalstar. The grey she-cat nodded. "Goldpaw, did you hear?" She called.

Robinflight chatted with Ashwhisker. They were, well, together. She started out disliking the grey tom, but grew to like him. He was the one cat that made her consider having kits, but she still didn't want to. Though, his promise of staying in the nursery for her and all she had to do was feed the kits was amusing. She looked at the spotted tom before nearly jumping at hearing her leader call her. Ashwisker chuckled. "Better go see Petalstar. You know, I was certain that you weren't afraid of clan cats. Especially your leader." There was this stupid grin on his face that Robinflight wanted to get off.
"I would love to see your reaction when you hear Petalstar call you suddenly."
The grin grew larger. "Gladly."
Robinflight sighed and flicked her tail at him in mock anger before walking towards Petalstar.

Willowpaw watched Softmoss work. The young apprentice was so interested in how herbs worked and how to heal cats. But Petalstar gave her Blazeclaw as a mentor. He was an experienced warrior, and with him teaching her, she would become a great warrior. At least, that's what she told herself. She knew she was the worst apprentice of the group. She knew that her mom was disappointed in her. She had a feeling Blazeclaw was also disappointed in her. But she couldn't imagine harming another cat! They're all cats, so why fight?

Goldpaw could hardly sit still when the orders were being called out. He was going on patrol! Once he heard her, he excitedly bounded towards Rainfall, almost crashing into her in the process.
"Absolutely. We're going on patrol. Ooh, I wonder if we'll talk with dad on the way, and whether we find any rogues, or maybe-" and he continued to recite possible events, sounding equally ecstatic as he did so.

Meanwhile Blazeclaw simply walked over to his apprentice without any emotion. Patrol wasn't anything new to him. It was his duty after all. And soon, it'll be his apprentice's duty, if she's willing to work for it.
"Willowpaw, are you prepared?" he asked, sounding oddly formal, as if he was talking to a fellow warrior.

Rainfall gave an exasperated sigh. "Or, there could be nothing at all." She glanced at her apprentice and then her eyes widened as if Goldpaw became a twoleg and was walking on his front paws only. "What do you think you're doing? You can't appear to Petalstar like that! What would she say? Go clean yourself!" It was clear Rainfall, herself, was in a frantic state as she scolded her apprentice. "When you preform in front of our leader, she is judging how far you've come. Being dirty does not make us look good."

Willowpaw nearly jumped out of her pelt when she heard Blazeclaw. "I, uh, sure." She licked her chest fur to hide any hesitance and embarrassment she got when Blazeclaw first called her. "Have you wondered how she does it?" She asked rhetorically before stepping away from the medicine cat den. Oh, how she would love to be a medicine cat! Never have to worry about borders, never have to fight others, and she could finally be helpful instead of a detriment.

Goldpaw drooped slightly. "Awww come on! Now?" he shook himself, spreading a surprisingly large cloud of dust and dirt causing him to sneeze. His fur was a little brighter, but the dirt still clung, keeping him a dull yellow and gray feline.
Goldpaw sighed, giving Rainfall an indignant glare. "I'm not cleaning the rest, unless you're curious about how she'll react to me hacking up a hairball."

Blazeclaw squinted at Willowpaw, curious about her question, but decided to let it be. The cat moved places, feeling impatient. He couldn't help but give a quiet, amused snort at Goldpaw's and Rainfall's interaction.
She's going to have her paws full. he though, giving one of his rare smiles.

Shadeflicker had been in the nursery, changing the bedding of the queens, when Petalstar called. She dipped her head in farewell, tapping Farsight’s shoulder with her tail-tip before padding out of the nursery, nearly tripping over Eaglekit as she headed out. The brown tom-kit bounced eagerly around her paws, causing her to mrrow in amusement before she put a damper on his enthusiasm. “Sorry, Eaglekit,” she apologized. “I have a patrol now. Why don’t you go get one of the elders to tell you a story?”

The kit nodded several times in quick succession before racing off towards the elder’s den. Shadeflicker straightened up, pawing at her ear, before she headed off to join the patrol. “I’m here, Petalstar,” the she-cat meowed, dipping her head in respect.

Rainfall glared at Goldpaw. "Then I guess I'll just do it myself and I'll have to give you elder duty when we come back. I'll give you one last chance to put in some effort, but then I'll take care of it, and you won't like it when I do." She flicked her tail and thought back to her apprenticehood. Was she that troublesome? She definitely would have to ask Whitethorn when she came back. He was one of the stricter cats. Always grumpy too, but Rainfall was close to her former mentor.

Willowpaw followed Blazeclaw. She didn't like how quiet and formal he was. It made her uncomfortable. The dark brown spotted tabby glanced at Rainpaw. She sorta wished that she got the grey cat instead due to the fact she showed a lot more personality. Blazeclaw was like the running joke of the cat that only lived to serve his clan and do nothing else. At least, she never really saw him show much emotion. At least he very friendly with her.

Thornheart uncurled himself from his spot in the Warriors’ den at the sound of Petalstar’s voice calling. He had managed to catch most of what she had said, enough to know it was time to go on patrol. He could already see the top of Rainfall’s tail leaving the den, so he quickly padded out of the underground burrow and into the sunlight. He gave the air a quick sniff and looked around the Flameclan camp for a moment or so before spotting Petalstar and trotting over. After saying hello to Shadeflicker he stood, ready to go, and watched Rainfall wrangling her apprentice. He didn’t have one of his own yet, and watching Rainfall and Goldpaw, he doubted he would be ready for one any time soon. It was certainly fun to watch, though.

Goldpaw sighed and shook himself harder, unleashing another plume of dust. His fur sparkled a little more. He continued by licking his fur with an unamused expression.
"Happy now?" he said with a last shake, finally appearing mostly clean.

Rainfall flicked her tail. "Good enough. Be on your best behavior, though." She padded over to Petalstar and sat down, giving her a nod and greeting the other warriors. Then Petalstar started the patrol, taking them to the edge where the rogue reports came from. Rainfall saw her leader sniff the air, like she was looking for something. Rainfall sniffed the air and realized that she was looking for the rogues. Then a bit of off-white fur caught her eye. Petalstar clearly saw it as well as the calico spun towards the border. Rainfall also faced the new cat, who was a mostly off-white cat with yellow splotches. A grey cat and a black cat walked up to next to the first one.

Shadeflicker twitched her ears in response to Thornheart’s greeting with a bright smile before following Petalstar out of the camp. As they approached to border, she could smell the scent-marks, as well as an unfamiliar musky tang. The rogues! she thought darkly, flicking suspicious glances left and right. Smells fresh. They might still be around here. As if they’d heard her thoughts, three cats appeared from the brush in front of them. Shadeflicker’s fur immediately stood up, hackles raising, and her claws dug into the dirt. She needed to be prepared to protect her Clanmates at the slightest provocation.

Goldpaw paused when they came across three cats. Though everyone appeared tense, Goldpaw almost mewed in excitement.
"Wow! Are those-" he was cut off by Blazeclaw, who had lightly tapped him with his tail, giving his son a warning glance. However, he himself did not appear tense either, casually sitting and watching, his tail flicking in preparation.

Thornheart smelled the strange scents almost as soon as Shadeflicker did, and went on the alert. He hadn’t expected this when they went out on patrol. He kept his eyes open and his ears perked, and soon enough the rogues were visible. He kept his eyes on them and his muscles taut, but he wasn’t going to do anything without Petalstar’s orders, or if one of the rogues attacked. He didn’t think they would, of course, since they were outnumbered easily, but they must have some reason for being here and Thornheart was definitely curious to know what it was.

Robinflight glared at the rogues and had her red tabby pelt bristled. Though, she honestly wasn't overly aggressive though, as she was in the same position many years ago. She saw Rainfall give Goldpaw a quick glare, probably due to his comment, and she noticed Willowpaw hid behind Blazeclaw, but she mostly payed attention to the three cats. She guessed the black cat was around six moons and thus learning, though she couldn't be sure. Then the white and orange cat spoke. "Hello FlameClan cats, can you bring your leader?"
Petalstar stepped forward. "I am the leader of FlameClan, Petalstar."
The cat gave a respectful nod. "Well, I'm Marigold, the grey cat is Stream, and the black cat is Snake. My group has a proposition for you. We come from a group of cats that are never hungry, never need to fight, and almost never get sick. We want to spread our good fortune to the Clans here, as they seem like reasonable cats. And since FlameClan is situated at our new border, we thought we might as well share this with you first."
Robinflight held back from twitching her whiskers with amusement. This was clearly false, and she was pretty sure Petalstar knew that too. "And how will you share that with us?" The calico asked.
Marigold smiled. "By moving in and showing you how we live, of course!"
Petalstar shook her head. "I'm afraid we'll have to decline."

The rogues didn’t seem hostile. Shadeflicker lowered her hackles slowly, but kept her claws extended into the dirt and her pelt bushed. Her small size was something she was self-conscious about in front of outsiders; she could easily be mistaken for a large apprentice by people not in the clan.

As the rogues started talking about the supposed utopian paradise they hailed from, Shadeflicker’s skeptical side came out. She had to hold in a derisive laugh so that Petalstar could respond without interruption. It was plainly obvious that she didn’t believe them, though. What place would that be, exactly? A Twoleg den? Yeah, right. Group of cats, my whiskers. Wouldn’t catch me dead in a place like that. Her whiskers twitched disapprovingly, but she didn’t say anything, sitting back on her haunches to see what the rogues would do after their rejection.

Thornheart’s eyes went a little wide at the offer from the rogue cats. Never sick or hungry? That sounded amazing! And besides, they could use the extra cats around, they could probably help make Flameclan the strongest! He was sure that letting them come into the clan was the right choice, and he was equally sure that Petalstar would let them in. After all, she had let in cats from outside the clan in the past. So he had to stifle a sound of surprise (and admittedly some disagreement) when Petalstar declined.

‘Why?’

That was the first thing to come into his mind. Why in the name of Starclan would they not accept these cats? It’s true that they were rogues and it might be smart to learn about them before blindly accepting them, but a flat out refusal? What was different here, that the accepting leader of the clan wouldn’t allow in cats who wanted to help them? As much as it confused him, he kept quiet and continued to observe. There was nothing he could do, anyway.

Goldpaw desperately held back the huge "WHAT!?" he wanted to yell. He would've done it anyway, but a stern look from his father told him he head already spoke enough. Still, what was the deal? It sounded nice, so why just deny it immediatley?

Blazeclaw didn't show any sort of reaction. Internally, he was wondering why Petalstar rejected the cats so fast. While he couldn't be sure about the legitimacy of their offer, it sounded very beneficial to the clan. Yet, there was barely any consideration, if at all, before the negative.
However, Blazeclaw knew his place. He was a warrior, not a deputy, or the Leader. It was not his place to make decisions unless asked to do so, so he remained quiet and waited.

Willowpaw was a bit surprised that Petalstar turned down the offer, though it did seem to amazing to actually hold any truth. Willowpaw saw Marigold frown and tilt her head a tiny bit. "Very well then, we have nothing more to discuss." She glanced to the black cat. "Snake, please report this to Daffodil." The black cat nodded and ran off. "I suppose we have nothing more to discuss."
Petalstar nodded. "Indeed. May StatClan be with you."
Marigold scoffed. "StarClan my rear," she muttered as the two groups walked away from each other.
Willowpaw held back a gasp as she heard what Marigold said. How could any cat be so disrespectful to StarClan. She had heard of cats not believing in StarClan, but never disrespecting them.
Petalstar glanced at her warriors. "I know some of you don't like I turned them away. However, I doubt they were truthful, and even if they were I cannot allow FlameClan to become more powerful than the others. CloudClan and NightClan already don't like us, and MistClan is waiting for a reason to say we need to be "put back in our place"," she said calmly to her warriors. Willowpaw saw the reasoning behind the words and gave a quick nod, glancing at her mentor as she did so.

Goldpaw gave a small whimper, still confused. Even though he understood her reasoning, he still felt like it was a bad idea to reject the offer, and not necessarily because of what they missed.

Blazeclaw gave a small nod, his face as stoic as ever. The cats made him feel on edge. He couldn't care less about the disrespect to the StarClan, but their demeanor seemed...off. Either way, he remained quiet and stood, ready to move.

Thornheart was a little taken aback on both fronts. First Petalstar turned away these potential allies, and then those cats disrespected Starclan. But before he could dwell on things too much, Petalstar addressed them and explained her reasoning for dismissing the offer. Thornheart had to admit that she had some good points, but he could see ways around them. Surely if there were enough cats to join they could fend off the other clans. After all, Flameclan was the greatest clan, and he intended to keep it that way. But despite his resolve, there was nothing to do now but wait for Petalstar’s orders, whether they were to continue to patrol or go back to the camp.

Shadeflicker’s lip curled into a snarl at the rogues’ blatant disrespect of StarClan. She held her temper in check, however; if she were to attack like her instincts were telling her to, not only would she most likely be injured, but it would reflect badly on FlameClan as well. She let her fur fall flat again once the rogues were out of sight, retracting her claws from the leaf litter with difficulty.

As far as Shadeflicker could tell, the rogues that had left didn’t bring any friends with them through the area, and the warm scent of prey chased the rogues’ stench out of the place. Hopefully Petalstar would decide to continue the patrol so she could catch a nice, juicy thresh or pidgeon. And a vole for Eaglekit while she’s at it.

Petalstar
Petalstar seemed to want to continue the patrol. Robinflight walked next to Thornheart. "So, how is my former apprentice doing?" She gave him a smile as she tried to forget about those cats. While she was all for keeping the clan open and allowing for cats to join their clan, Robinflight honestly felt like those cats were off. They certainly didn't seem accepting of their lifestyle, so why should they allow blatantly disrespectful cats into their clan, especially since it was almost like a declaration of war if they took in too many.

Rainfall glanced down at Goldpaw, quickly thinking of a way to get his mind off the rogues. After a few seconds, her face lit up with realization. She leaned down a bit and whispered in the golden-tabby's ear, a smile on her face. "How about you show Petalstar your hunting skills." She affectionately placed her tail on her apprentice. "This is one of the amazing reasons why I wanted you to be clean, to impress Petalstar more." She gave a purr.

Willowpaw looked up at Blazeclaw and gave a sigh before several herbs caught her eye. She recalled their appearance from watching Softmoss all the time. Willowpaw knew her true calling was being a medicine cat, but she was afraid to tell her mentor. After all, what would Blazeclaw say? She gave a sigh and dropped the idea from her mind. Becoming a medicine cat was primarily not going to happen anyway. Especially when her mentor was so cold all the time.

Thornheart glanced at Robinflight out of the corner of his eye as he paced along, keeping up with the patrol’s general speed with apparent ease. He considered his answer for half a moment, and then replied. “I’m fine,” he said, and then lowered his voice a tad before continuing, “but I don’t get Petalstar. I can see her not trusting them right away; but turning her back on them without giving them a chance? I don’t like it. I think they could be good for the clan, if what they said was true, and the fact she didn’t even give a second thought to the offer or decide to look into it more later without making any decisions for the time... it just seems wrong.” He paused, and gave a sniff at a clump of grass. He considered making a comment along the lines of ‘you of all cats know how good it is to be accepted into the clan’, but decided it might be rude and held off on it.

Robinflight shook her head. "Honestly, those cats were off from the get-go. They didn't want to join the clan, Thornheart, they wanted us to join their group. Become another branch of their tree. Did you not pick up on that? The way they spoke and carried themselves, it wasn't right. Thornheart, your heart is in the right place, I can see that, but you must also look closer at how cats carry themselves and talk." She gave a sigh and looked at Thornheart. "Besides, their comment about StarClan really bugged me."

Goldpaw perked up. "Oh yeah! I could do that. Watch this."
The apprentice stretched, getting ready to move before looking at is mentor, appearing smug.
"And you said nothing would happen..." he couldn't resist the quip. He moved on, quickly catching sight of a nearby bird.

Blazeclaw sighed as he saw Goldpaw excitedly make his way to the bird. He almost wanted to tell Rainfall to stop him, but decided she may as well learn for herself. His eyes caught sight of Willowpaw staring at some plants, and curiously walked over.
"Something the matter?"

Goldpaw crouched, slinking his way near the bird as quietly as he could. Once he was about a couple feet away, he leapt up and release a loud yowl as he ran towards the bird like a warrior going into war. Hearing it, Blazeclaw sighed and shook his head.

Despite his fighting skills, Blazeclaw was aware that Goldpaw always seemed to assume that the prey will fight back, and forgoes stealth often. Predictably, the bird wasn't a battle hardened warrior, and flapped off, fleeing the crazy feline that attacked it.

Goldpaw's claw landed on nothing but dirt, and the cat groaned.
"Awww man...why do they always escape." he lamented.

"Goldpaw!" Rainfall shouted, "What was that?!" She stormed over, fuming. How could her apprentice be so awful at hunting! Much less stalking! Stalking was literally taught on the first day! The grey warrior calmed herself before talking to her apprentice, not to make her apprentice hate her. She could use this as a teaching moment! Yes! That'll make sure she and her apprentice still looked good in the eyes of their leader. "Goldpaw, do you understand why the bird flew away?"

Willowpaw was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Balzeclaw, nearly jumping out of her fur. "Oh! Blazeclaw! Um, I saw these herbs and thought maybe Softmoss could use them. She said she needed more chervil earlier. Well, I overheard her muttering it to herself." Willowpaw twitched her tail anxiously before looking up and seeing Goldpaw getting scolded for scaring a bird. She shook her head at her fellow apprentice.

“I suppose...” Thornheart muttered in response to his former mentor. He was stubborn and wasn’t going to let go of his opinions that easily, but he didn’t feel like getting into a fight about it and her points were valid. But before he could think about it too much, he was distracted by the antics of his friend Rainfall’s apprentice, Goldpaw. It seemed that the young tom might actually catch the bird until he gave that battle yowl and charged in. Thornheart couldn’t help but chuckle, even if he did feel a bit bad for both the apprentice and his mentor, because he had made that same mistake when he was an apprentice and learning to hunt. Luckily, that tendency had been knocked out of him pretty quickly. Still, it was amusing to watch the apprentice make the same mistake he had.

Goldpaw's ears folded back as his mentor exploded. He knew that he wasn't great at hunting, but at least Blazeclaw was always calm when he screwed up. Sure, he always felt like he was disappointing him, but at least Blazeclaw never said it out loud. She did calm down quickly, though, but Goldpaw didn't relax. He cocked his head at her question.
"Um, it was my yell wasn't it? Not loud enough."
It may have sounded like a joke, but Goldpaw's eys carried genuine belief.

Blazeclaw curiously flicked his tail, looking over at his apprentice.
"Well, why don't we take them, then? If a medicine cat needs them, it'll be beneficial for the clan if we bring them." he said simply, before looking at Willowpaw. "And...good job on finding them, I suppose."
His voice was a little flat, but he meant the compliment, although her knowledge of herbs was...curious, to say the least.

Shadeflicker couldn’t help giving a mrrow of amusement at Goldpaw’s antics before turning slightly, tail swishing, as she caught the scent of a vole. She crouched low to the ground, silently moving one paw forward at a time. Her tongue swiped her jaws in anticipation as she gathered her hindpaws beneath her and pounced! One paw slipped to the side, but the other one trapped the vole’s tail, and she killed it with a swift bite to the neck. This’ll make a good addition to the prey pile, she thought in satisfaction, poking the vole with one claw. “Thank you, StarClan, for this prey,” she murmured, before picking it up and heading back to the patrol where she intended to bury it before the patrol continued.

Rainfall flicked her ear. Was that a joke? But she saw that Goldpaw was very serious. And foolish. She saw Shadeflicker hunt down a vole and smiled. Demistration. Perfect. "Uh, no Goldpaw. While it was the yowl, it wasn't because it wasn't loud enough. It was too loud. Prey doesn't like loud noises. They would rather run than fight. Did you see how Shadeflicker did it? She was silent as a feather in the wind."

Willowpaw carefully gathered the herb. It was nice to do something she was so passionate about. She was sure she wanted to be a medicine cat. She was certian of it. But she was unsure of how to tell her mentor. Especially since she never really talked like that to him before. She glanced at Goldpaw then at her mentor. Was he going to have her hunt as well? She didn't want that, as she was just plain awful at hunting. And fighting. She could do patrols, if there were no fighting though. That had to mean something, right?

Robinflight nodded before twitching her whiskers at Goldpaw. "Remember when you did that?" She nudged Thornheart playfully. "You were awful at hunting for that reason. And you would've given our position away if you continued that terrible habbit." She chuckled.

Thornheart’s whiskers twitched as well as he glanced at Robinflight. “Yeah, I was just thinking of that as well. But I still hold that I shaped up to be a great hunter. Thanks to you, of course.” Now that his mind was off the subject of the Rogue cats, he threw himself back into patrol duty. So far he hadn’t smelled any prey or any more sign of other cats since the meeting with the rogues, but he stayed on the alert. He did eventually catch an old scent of a field mouse, but he could tell it was long gone. He was more focused on patrol duty anyways, so he didn’t mind if he didn’t catch any prey.

Goldpaw cocked his head, surprised. "Really? But, a loud yowl is supposed to disorient them, right? Always did it like Dad showed me, and it worked over other cats..." he paused, looking over at Shadeflicker, but the vole in her mouth revealed that he missed the example. "Um....I missed it. What was it? Was I too slow? Or was it..." Goldpaw trailed off, muttering to himself about what he could do differently.

"Birds are not cats, Goldpaw. Neither are mice, voles, rabbits and other prey. When they hear a yowl, their first instinct is to run away. Unlike the Warriors you will fight in battle, prey doesn't hesitate to flee from us." She gave a sigh. "Did you hear Shadeflicker at all?" Hopefully her apprentice would get it. Hopefully she would be able to teach him not to yowl when hunting. Hopefully. Though, she doubted it.

Salmontail stared up ungracefully at the cloudless sky, his tail-tip flicking with an impatient manner. He was hungry, not having eaten before heading out to hunt. He hadn't expected the dead grass to crunch ever so loudly beneath his paws, dried and withered from the sun. He turned his head, pricking his ears as he listened to his clanmates speak nearby. His haunches stood as a slight breeze carried itself to him, rustling the grass against his fur. Silently, he dropped his maw to scent the air. Salmontail picked up the slightest trace of fur and musk, although somehow he couldn't immediately determine what he'd been smelling. However he knew he was upwind from whatever it was, and without a word to his clanmates he silently followed the direction the scent had come from, sticking as well as he could to the shadows that were supplied by the tall grass- His bright, bushy white body wasn't exactly the perfect camouflage.
