World Vision : 30 Hour Famine

Right, so.

It's this weekend. Starts Friday afternoon, at one. I'm partaking in it. No food, 30 hours. Raising money, collecting food, etc. All the money I manage to collect (Heh, online donations work, I have no shame in throwing links to 'Charms) will go to the charity, Wold Vision. It's in an effort to stamp out poverty and end world hunger.

I think I head somewhere there's enough food in the world for every single person to get four pounds a day. That's enough to be stuffed. Unless you happen to be Micheal Phelps. In that case, it's like your morning bagel.

Also, for a few hours, we'll be driving around our city, collecting foods for the Food Bank here. Last year, we got so much we needed to form a bucket line from the cars to the bank. It's no exaggeration when I say we saved the food bank last year. Times are tough. Food is hard to come by, everywhere. But we manage to get a lot so nyah.

Anyway, post here for whatever, viewpoints on hunger, poverty, etc. If you happen to be taking part in it, or, if you want me to, I'll link-fling you so you can online donate *shifty eyes*

Oh, and by the time you've read this, a couple of kids under five will have died.

I do appreciate these sorts of campaigns, because while "one person can't make a difference" ... at least they're trying. Even the people who just do it for their own ethical boosting or publicity, it's still something that someone's benefiting from (... unless it's all just one big conspiracy and the food/money ain't getting where it's supposed to at all > ... it could happen XP).

Either way, I'm one of those "talks about it but never gets involved" people. Yes, I'm lazy, but there's other things I do in life to help people - it's just not necessarily these big campaigns. I've also come to the conclusion that if you want to help someone or some sector, you should just focus on it and do the best you can without trying to save the world. A little bit at a time, right? But I'm not trying to discourage anyone here... Just trying to cover-up my own hypocritical-ness. I fully accept that I'm a lazy hypocrite, though XD

All the best with this Cody and whoever else takes part. Do some good for us folks who just sit back at home ^^

I'm quite happy to say that I'mma participating in this event. While a fast of 30 hours doesn't seem too great, and then going out in heat (this is Texas here, remember, and it gets all the way up to the 80's where I live sometimes at this time of year. I think the record for Feb. was in the 90's)to do some community service... not the best of situations. But hey, my friends did it last year, they said it was a great experience because it wasn't only fun, but a great time to be with God, so I decided to do it this year. I've been too lazy to raise any money, though (I actually lost the envelope that I was supposed to collect the money in on the first day I got it, but I didn't have any moneys in it. So no other people's money lost, thank goodness. XD), so I guess I'm not really helping those starving children out there in the world.

And at the end of all this fasting, we get this huuuuuge feast of our favorite stuffs. As we've basically skipped 3 meals (dinner on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday), and this would be our 4th meal, apparently last year many people got 4 meals and stuffed themselves. Not a very smart, healthy idea. XD

I'm also glad we get juice breaks at times so we don't dehydrate, and the boys sleep seperate from the girls (They should.

I'm one of those people that actively aviods the GreenPeace guys in the street, but happily chats to the Red Cross. That may sound odd, but I'd rather discuss my fellow human beings than have trees shoved at me (I like trees, just not fanatical tree huggers).

Good for Cody and Eevee. What you're doing should be a rewarding experience for you and the people you help. I know this had inspired me to take further notice of causes, but sadly I don't know many people to acutay do a fund-raising event with. I'l be donating where I can and... roller-skating behind a car or something stupid.

Remember to drink lots of fluids. The dehydration will get you, but you probably already know that.

Hahaha, Shiny, that sounds exactly like what we do. Lotsa water 'n' juice breaks in between stuffs. Dehydration is not yerfriend.

And, y'know Katie, it's not like you're doing completely nothing. I think the fact that you even bothered to post here says something. 'Cause like, even sideline support is something. So thanks to you and Tatile.

You're too kind, Cody ;)

Funny. While I'd chat with Red Cross, too, I'd probably be much more likely to approach GreenPeace first XD

I think I'm with Linkachu on this one, while I'd talk to both, I'd be more likely to approach GreenPeace myself.

I give my Support to the RSPB, because in a round-about way, looking after the environment often aids the local people in other ways. Recently, I gave money to them to help build a huge reserve in Africa - which not only will create safe homes for birds, but for people too. The RSPB hired locals to come and plant the fruit trees, which the locals now maintain and harvest from. It also protects the local water sources and keeps it clean.

Good luck to you, Cody. I hope it goes well and like Shiny said, don't forget to drink plenty of fluid. I'm sure if you spend some time in Chat, we'll all help keep your mind of food ^^

Edit: And good luck to you too, Shiny ^^

Magpie, just so ya know, Shiny's doing it too lol. And, thank you very much.

And, I don't know how it works out for her, but I'll be spending most of my weekend not-home, being up at the church, collecting food, and ice-skating (blarg)

As for the whole Greenpeace Red cross thing, I'm not too sure where I stand. We get the Red Cross calls a lot, and they get annoying pretty quickly, though it is a great cause. As for the Greenpeace thing I'm not too sure, seeing as I'm too lazy to Wikipedia them.

And, after re-reading the posts, I have to comment on Shiny's meal thing.

I stuffed myself last year, and I seemed to be fine. Though it did seem a bit unethical to do so >>
But, I'm trying to tell myself the reason I did that was because there was so much different food there, not that I was being greedy...

Green Peace, Red Cross, guys dressed as Spiderman... they hang around my town centre a fair amount, but avoiding them is pretty easy. Hell, I already have a Green Peace 'escape plan', which I suppose is mean.

I would guess that my main 'beef' with people of any cause (whether it be religious or not) is having them talk constantly about their cause and such. And the Oxfam adverts that are like three minutes long and seem to exist only to make you feel bad about living somewhere other than central Africa...

Sorry for the rant, but I'll give money when I'm good and ready, not because some man in a sodden coat wants me to.

Well, for me, I got to church around 6:30 on Friday, then we carpool to this other church for the actual thing. After a bit of worship and stuffs, we go to bed. Saturday morning. We do some worship, then OMGYAY6HOURSOFCOMMUNITYSERVICE. After that, more worship, then dinner. And just because we worship three times, doesn't mean it's not fun. I rather enjoy worshipping. XD

*scurries to the fridge to get the schedule*

1 pm stop eating. Then, around six, we meet at the church. At seven, it's listed as "Tribe Introduction" and than, from Seven thirty 'till ten, we've got Tribal games, box project and (fangirl squeel) bonfire worship :D (YES! TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS. All that it's missing is a flaming Bidoof......)
Then we pretty much go to bed.
When we wake up, there's a morning devotion and stuff from World Vision, then it's the Road Rally. We're gonna go out, raid some pantries, and donate it all to the city food bank. After that, we're going to the ice rink, skating, and then going back to the church. When we get back, we pack up, and than it's time for the last worship service. It ends with communion, which breaks our fast, and then we have super mega meal.

In case I don't see you 'till after it's over, have fun Shiny!

EDIT WOOO!!! IT'S DONE!!!! So, uhm...yeah. We raised a buttload of money. As for the food bank, we filled up three and a half giant crates o' food.
