Azumi's strikes that seemed to be so focused yet so relentless finally appeared to bare fruit as she got the needed strike as Keito's blade as it sailed behind the Iwa Genin and landed with a thud on the ground. Azumi's eyes seemed to widen slightly, as if she had been a shark that smelled blood as she aimed to build on this key moment but Keito was one if not defiant as he tried to land a counter blow even disarmed.

As Keito went high, Azumi shifted low. Azumi worked to duck the aerial kick and she focused the next swing of her umbrella on the lone ankle that had kept Keito somewhat grounded. As she avoided the kick she knew that even with his chakra buffs a solid blow to his lone ankle the force of the blow combined with the fact Keito's base was limited with one leg in the air should ensure she'd be able to get Keito on his back.

Azumi's focus was clear, once she had managed to force Keito on his back she'd quickly aim to press the tip near his neck, where a simple shift of the handle would reveal a bladed tip that extended from the top and threatened to press into the next should Azumi have made even one nudge forward.

"Surrender, this will be the one time I ask this. Try anything else and these exams will be the least of your concerns."

He'd made a simple mistake in giving up his footing, but given the lack of time and space Keito's kick had seemed to be what he might need to send his foe back even after she'd disarmed him. Yet, for someone who knew to stay low, he'd gone high. Even as the tip of the umbrella bore into the flesh and pressed against the bone of his ankle, Keito knew his father would give him shit for that kick.

With one leg swinging wildly through the air and another buckling down on its topped ankle, the Iwa genin fell with his back to the ground. Even still, he shifted the chakra from his upended feet and rumbling stomach into the tips of his fingers. Azumi extended her umbrella's newly furbished blade against his neck, looking grim as always. He gave her a curious look before she spoke to him in the quiet tone of a trained killer.

"Surrender, this will be the one time I ask this. Try anything else and these exams will be the least of your concerns." She said to him.

"What else could I even try--?" Keito began to ask, a dour look on his face but a coy sound about his voice.

Even as he spoke, the worm Ubongirigiri burst from what little ground was shared between the two battling genin: Keito's summon extended both ends of itself, rapidly wrapping around Azumi's wrists and up her arms, finally wrestling the umbrella from her grip. With a powerful tug, the worm pulled the Ame genin toward Keito as he rushed up from the ground, extending both hands outward to meet Azumi..

"Maindo Keimusho," Keito whispered, almost saddened by his decision to use his technique, as the tips of his fingers gripped at Azumi's skull, pushing his chakra through to her brain, like he'd stabbed his skeleton key into her skull and twisted hard to pull the door open.

He could hear the ringing echoes of metal pipes and steel as the Hidden Art: Mind Prison laid its trap for the unsuspecting Azumi Noriko.

Azumi had been quite careful at every phase of this battle. Every move she had made had been with purpose, every step made to get to a winning position and she accounted for every variable from her supplies to the ground itself. Azumi had made a point to steer this action up to now in a way that suited her goal. Yet in spite of all these precautions, she seemed to overlook one detail in the heat of the moment.

She had overlooked the one worm she had yet to dispose of, and that had been about to cost her dearly.

Azumi cursed inwardly as her body was suddenly wrapped by the worm as it seemed to focus on her wrists and waist as she was lifted up and the umbrella had been forced from her grip! Azumi cursed, but she seemed to not overly panic, as she struggled in the grip and seemed to be sure she had an out to this. One minor misstep was gonna be a far cry from beating her, but it seemed that Keito had been quicker to act in this instance.

Before long she had felt this odd sensation that had begun on her forehead, and things seemed to darken. Azumi cursed, this had to be some sort of illusion. Though her focus on trying to disrupt this seemed to falter a bit, as a certain noise.

Drip.

Drip.
Drip.
Rain, this seemed to be curious, of all things to try and temper her mind with, it seemed Keito had picked something more familiar than anything if he even had been away of this. Azumi seemed to note something in her view, and focused to try and make our her surroundings.

The young shinobi put the full weight of his mental and physical might to hold his opponent in his genjutsu; it would take a lot out of him to hold the whole illusion together, and keep his poor victim locked inside -- but he just had to hold out longer than Azumi, long enough to wear her will and physical energy down enough to claim the match as is...the match had turn from a physical spectacle, to an illusory one.

While holding his foe under the Mind Prison genjutsu, Keito couldn't move to attack Azumi for fear of losing his control over her -- what would be the point of moving in for a final attack if she could break free? He'd seen the look in her eyes; she'd leave him breathless in a ditch on the side of the road if she had half the chance. No, Keito had to keep her suppressed long enough for her body to give way to fatigue.

Azumi's Mind
DripDripDrip the rain would fall as if in slow motion, each immensely tiny drop falling as if right in front of Azumi's eyes. She could see her own reflection in them all, and every reflected looked back in captive despair. The rain was a sanguine red, a thick, viscous thing which threatened to weigh down Azumi's shoulders.

Around her, steam-pipes and steel beams formed an elaborate series of walls and floors and ceiling to hold her in tight; in front of her lie only a single path to start, which branched left toward one, redwood door, and right to another.

Behind the Ame girl, the scraping of a kunai against the maze's steel walls threatened her eardrums near the point of rupturing pain; looking behind her would show a massive, hulking form, which stomped toward her as it continued dragging the kunai with a horrible screeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Azumi could look at her new pursuer, and no matter how near he got, she could see only shadows over his body, and a ninja headband tied around its usual place; was it Leaf? Stone? Mist? No, it was almost all of them, at once.

Boom! B-Boom! Explosions rang out through the maze, followed by wailing sobs of pain -- all too familiar to Azumi. Something she'd experienced before. It was the sound of the battlefield she called home.

Azumi worked to focus not on the weight of things, as she reminded herself this was just an illusion. The issue was how to dispel it, as far as she recalled her body was somewhat bound by the worm which had meant even if she had been aware this was just an illusion she had trouble when it came to force her hands together to try and dispel this.

The environment seemed to be this sort of twisted aesthetic of her home in many ways, the almost steampunk esque visuals along with the perpetual rain around her but that and how to get out of this illusion proved to be a secondary thought.

A rather horrific sound shifted the Ame Genin's attention, and before he had been a rather disturbing image. The sounds of conflict, that terrible war that had brought her nation to near ruin and left her to grow up int he ruts. This being, this dark entity who seemed to move with a malevolent purpose...it caused her calm composure to freeze as she tried to catch her breath. This was ever nightmare her mother had spoken of, the way things had been that led to their struggles in his childhood, the seed of evil as Azumi referred to.

"Just an illusion...just an illusion..." Azumi repeated in her mind, a whisper more than anything as she attempted to ready her umbrella. Only she discovered it was no longer there. In fact, as she glanced at her hands they seemed to be smaller than she recalled. And this opened her eyes as her appearance had taken a shift, no longer had she been in her proper ninja garb and had instead been in a more ragged set of clothing; as if she had become but a young child, no older than five once more.

Azumi stepped back in shock, but as she had she tripped over something and landed with a thud. Azumi glanced over and her eyes seemed to widen; as she saw what seemed to be a scared corpse of a Ame civilian along the ground. One that had a pair of kunai logged in her chest. All around Azumi had been the bodies of Ame civilians, the men the women and even children; victims in the war they never asked for merely had been in the "crossfires" of. The rain felt heavier and heavier, but perhaps that had been her heart as he composure grew thin and she started to become shaken.

It's just an illusion...it's just an illusion....it is JUST an illusion....
Yet no matter how Azumi tried to rationalize this to herself, that scared little girl who grew up in a broken land abandoned by the great nations who nearly destroyed it seemed to gain more sway. And as that black figure approached, as it moved closer with each step while its kunai continued to scrape the walls of this maze Azumi's body seemed to shift into an automated reflex and she had done the only thing that she could.

She ran into the maze, ran fast as her little legs carried her while tears dripped onto the blood-stained ground below.

Azumi's Mind
The bodies were everywhere, they were everywhere, everywhere around Azumi, more like quick-sand than like former people; the walls turned from steel to flesh, became their rotting, rain-soaked forms. The maze itself became their bodies. Some, still living, poked their hands out of the walls, desperate for Azumi to help them out of their sideways sinking fate.

Whatever shadow followed Azumi never seemed to lose sight of her. He just kept walking, chuckling along as he did. The whole arrangement was amusing to him, a delightful change of pace from his normal, daily affairs. But the shadow was just that; he always seemed close enough to make a move on Azumi, never to do so. Instead he followed, thumping footsteps, cackling laugh. And all around them, the sounds of war raged on.

Each path of the maze seemed to branch into forking doors -- harbingers of horrors personalized for the poor Rain kunoichi. Would it ever end?

This maze was becoming a nightmare the longer Azumi moved in it. Time seemed to be some sort of illusion, in fact so had all of this but the panicked mind as she moved about this nightmare of a maze. As if this had been some cruel joke with no punchline, each door seemed to only offer a gut punch rather than any escape from this twisted vision.

One door showed the depravity of the world she lived in, a poor woman mugged by a pair of men with suggestive expressions, another poor beggar robbed in plain sight as there seemed to be no enforcement in this lawless land.

Another door, and this one showed the struggles to get by. The lack of food, a resource that had long been stripped by visiting powers even as the war had passed. A sea of starving faces who fought for scrapes of bread in a chatoci mess. Each door seemed to lead Azumi nowhere, and this dark presence seemed to keep pace no matter how much she tried to lose him. In fact, that blood-stained kunai nearly had a clash at her shoulder, but she just managed to stumble and avoid the worst.

Azumi tried wiping the tears out of her eyes, a small voice in the back of her head urged her to recall this is just some deception. A trick, but it all seemed so real, and the images clouded her thinking as this had been unlike any Genjutsu she expected to encounter.

But Azumi still tried to find a way out, a way to get away a way to just have this all end. There had to be something anything to grant her salvation, and as she stumbled ahead to a larger door a figure seemed to meet her there, one that had similar if not softer features to Azumi, but seemed a little older with a tired but kindness to her eyes. A look Azumi, whether as the child she seemed to be or the ninja she had been, had known all too well.

"M...m-mom?"

Azumi's Mind
"A-Azu-mi," The mother Noriko called out, her voice reminiscent of a high pitched beg. "This way, please, this way-- he'll get you, he'll get you!"

The room Azumi found herself in was that of her old home and a grave. Even the warmth spread by her mother's opening arms turned to rigid cold, as her mother shrunk in size.

And from behind Azumi's mother, the shadow began to rise, a smile curled at his lips. His stretching arm passed explosively through her mom's chest, the shadowy kunai reaching out for the Ame genin.

Only two doors remained: the one Azumi had just come through, and one behind the attacking shadow, straight ahead past the crumbling figure of her lost parent.

Azumi had never felt so small in her life. The image of her mother had brought a rare, almost foreign feeling to the young Ame ninja....true happiness, a warmth in this despair, and even that seemed to crumble before her eyes.

That sinking feeling that any joy in her life, any happiness had been stripped of that dark figure. No...not it. Azumi's tears seemed to fall as her expression shifted from fear, to anger. Anger at the true source of her pain, the real thing that had given this maze its power.

She glanced at the dark figure who blocked the one door left in this, one that lunged for her. Tried to make her suffer the way others had, but Azumi gripped her hands as that scared girl seemed to grow in an instant. And so she charged.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

*****
Azumi's eyes snapped open as she seemed to shatter the illusion, blood trickled down as she had bitten her tongue as the pain allowed her to figuratively clear the path, but she panted a bit as the experience seemed to be draining.

However, even as she panted, her eyes focused a little onto Keito...and a glare, a gaze he'd pick up could send shivers as a look of utter fury and pure malice was present. Hatred, directly solely on the one who had made her live that nightmare.

She would not lose here, not like this....not on this land, not to him!
Azumi tried to gather her strength, to shake off this almost drunken stupor that the illusion had caused, and tried to force her arms together even as the worm constricted her. She worked to just get her fingertips together, as she began to try and form signs with all the effort she'd be able to muster.

Stadium 5
It could have been seconds. It could have been minutes. It could have been hours. Keito kept his prey under as long as he could, forcing back her malleable will with that of his own -- and, in part, aided by the worm Ubongirigiri. Still, Keito could only hold on for so long as Azumi explored the darkness of her own mind. Eventually, the pain started to seep through; he felt the genin's anguish near as if it were his. Until then, the Iwa genin could hardly picture the violence of war besides that which he read in old textbooks, or stories told to him by his father, now a veteran of two shinobi wars.

He hadn't expected the destitution, the desolation -- the utter lack of any emotional aside from terror, and the driving force of one's own survival instinct. Keito had read about the deaths in Amegakure as nameless statistics to be devoured in a library; Azumi had lived it all -- a reality harsher than any fiction a creative mind could imagine.

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

Everyone in the stadium could feel the chains of Keito's genjutsu being broken, maybe even the crunching down of teeth through tongue given proximity.

'She almost bit her god-damn tongue off,' The fatigued Iwa ninja noted. 'I thought I had her. And here I am: used up too much chakra, between summoning and Maindo Keimusho...'

While Azumi momentarily reeled from the physical and mental fatigue brought about by the Mind Prison, Keito moved his tired, bleeding body to his sakabatou, pulling it from the ground.

'I took my shot and I missed it,' He thought, watching light return to Azumi's eyes, turned into pure, burning hatred as those eyes found him through the daze. 'That's a shame, I guess. Sorry, everyone; this one just wants it more than I, you know?'

Keito could tell the tired, injured Ubongirigiri struggled to hold on tight to Azumi after she'd broken free from the genjutsu. And he saw, to his dismay, the girl still somehow managing to form hand-signs, having forced her restrained limbs close enough to mold chakra for jutsu. He had no other choice.

Raising the sakabatou in front of his face, Keito used his left hand to form the Ram seal, disappearing in a cloud of smoke. He'd need the Body-Flicker to work this time where it hadn't before. Keito needed to be quicker than he'd ever been.

"Wanting it more" had been a rather stock phrase, but that pure drive to win that pure desire to emerge victories proved to have more weight than mere motivation. In spite of the struggles of the worm, Azumi had just barley managed to get her fingers together to form the needed signs.

Azumi sensed that, between the mental fatigue she had endured, and the wounds Keito had taken, that this struggle was close to an end. It was more a matter of who'd be able to deliver a finishing blow to the other, and Azumi had one thing that fueled her drive...

"Water Style: Mist Cutter Jutsu!"

...it would be her!
As Keito seemed to vanish in smoke, Azumi shot out a stream of water from her mouth, a mixture of chakra and her saliva as she used the thin stream to slash at the sections of the worm that had her waist and wrists bound. Blood seemed to shot out as she cut herself free and quickly worked for her umbrella that had fallen on the body of the worm. Keito was quick to meet her, as both young ninja prepared to deliver dual strikes.

Azumi aimed to try and deliver a thrusting stab aimed for Keito's gut with the extended blade at the tip of her umbrella. Azumi had little time to judge the aim of his own swing, as she trusted her body to duck the motion of Keito's swing to avoid the worst of his slash.

Azumi cared little if he had gotten a grazing cut to her shoulder or something, she seemed set on dealing heavy damage as her eyes screamed with that invigorated intensity of hers.

The crowd looked on with baited breath, as they wondered who'd come out on top in this key exchange. But Azumi cared nothing for them, her mind had one thought that worked to fuel her fire.

I must win, I will win, I'll show every last one of you all what we are about!

Stadium 5
He'd gone in from up high again, whereas she'd come from down low. What were the odds of that? Keito had seen the hand signs, but he'd just been a hair too slow. What else was new? He'd taken his swing, but Azumi had ducked below and grabbed her umbrella. Still, Keito pressed on, slashing his blade in at her neck before she could deliver a retaliatory blow.

The pair moved together liked actors performing on the stage, Keito's sword swinging, Azumi thrusting her umbrella up and--

Cracck--!

Shhhnkk--!

In their synchronized slashes, Keito's sakabatou missed its marked, its tip slamming down hard into Azumi's right shoulder, sending crackling vibrations down the bones of her arm -- a vicious blow in its own right.

But Keito looked down and saw that damned umbrella jammed into his stomach like a tent-spike driven through the ground. Sure enough, the Iwa genin could taste blood on his lips. She'd gotten there first, of course. And her attack diverted his, just enough: a tragedy told in split-second snippets.

"Damn," He sputtered, one eye closed as he made eye contact with Azumi. "Is that my pancreas?"

His body slid off Azumi's steel and dropped to the ground with a harsh thud; Keito's head turned to look up to the sky through his open eye -- how different the sky looked. Was it a different shade of blue? No more did the sun peak over puffy clouds to stare down at him; instead, the clouds locked the sun away like a newly hidden treasure.

That eye closing, Keito's opponent could hear him speak, faintly:

"Sorry about all of that-"

Needless to say much in the crowd had been stunned, the two shinobi traded hard blows as they seemed to land dueling strikes on one another. Azumi gritted her teeth. The pain that shot through her shoulder had been no paper cut, her dominant arm seemed to get a good blow in as she felt blood trickle down the side of his blade. The soreness shot through her as if she had been hit by a bull, and even in spite of that one thing became clear.

Azumi had managed to land a decisive shot to her target.

Her umbrella stuck right into the gut of Keito, the blade at its end seemed to press into his body as blood dripped from her foe. It had not been a clean visual, and as Azumi worked to catch her breath she tried to focus past the pain in that very arm that held the umbrella to her foe, but it seemed that her strike was not fatal as Keito had some choice words for her.

While others may have found that amusing as he slipped off the end of her blade to the ground, Azumi had only found further infuriating.

"You...you dare, after all that..." Azumi cursed, the idea he made a quip of all things even after such a blow seemed to fuel her anger which still stewed over from that nightmare illusion he trapped her in. Azumi had heard the seemingly more sincere apology he passed but to her, that had been a token gesture. Overshadowed by the insult of that little "joke" of his. Azumi, even with her arm sore and the general mental and physical fatigue managed to focus past the pain as she raised her umbrella up. Seemingly with the intent to smash his skull in while he had been down, but before she'd make that swing, the proctor came between them and glanced back at the Ame Genin with a tired expression.

"Enough, he cannot continue. This match is over." The proctor clarified, as Azumi took a moment to take a breath and managed to hear some faint snores from Keito as he rested with his hand holding the open wound. Slowly, Azumi shifted the umbrella behind her back, but her gaze shifted from her foe to the true source of her tempered emotions as she cast a glare right in the direction of the Five Kage.

"I am sure none of you expected this, huh? Some lowly Ame ninja making it past the opening round. Hard to imagine right?" Azumi said, her voice low but it seemed to gain volume as her bitter sarcasm had been heard loud and clear. "Well get used to it! The days of Amegakure being a doormat to the world, someone you can just walk over with no regard are over! When this day concludes, you will be forced to crown me the winner of this little festive, and you all will know what the spirit of Amegakure really is!" Azumi said, as she had been overflowing with emotion and just unleashed it all out in her rant. Years of bottled up emotions burst out at once, and slowly she had already began her walk back to the medical station as the proector took note of Keito before he glanced back at Azumi and sighed.

"The winner of the match, Azumi Noriko."

As the many fights raged on in the separate arenas during this exciting third stage of the Chunnin exam, Shiho made her way to her match over in arena 4. After seeing who her opponent in the first round was, the young Hyuga got pretty pumped to get the show on the road. "Alright, I'm going to be against Raiku. I haven't seen him since he left me in the Forest of Death so this might be a good chance to ask him about that." The girl said to herself as she waited for her opponent to show up.

"I suppose, hopefully Kumo will at the very least get a good showing. He made it through the forest, but that also could have been pure luck. We'll have to see and find out." Taji said, still unsure as to what she thought of Bao. He was an enigma, and she did not like it.

------------

Mori had watched Keito's match and couldn't help but feel a bit sad when his ally lost. That meant the representation of his village fell on his shoulders, and that was a heavy load to bear. Thankfully his opponent quickly showed up, so he didn't have to think too long about what would happen if he lost.

"You're Bao, right? Shall we get this fight on the road, then?" The boy said, walking up to the new arrival.

Moments after his opponent had fallen unconscious, Kiro managed to land safely on the ground, with his body becoming momentarily shrouded in a coat of blue electricity. His shadow clone had been deactivated, transferring its chakra exactly as it was back to him. The sparks dissipated as Kiro’s legs finally gave up and let him fall to his knees. There was now a slow, but steady stream of blood flowing out of the penetrated parts of his skin. He’d won the fight, but at what cost?

His opponent nodded off to him as a sign of respect and Kiro did one in return before she attempted to leave the field. Taking that as his queue to exit as well, Kiro tried to push his hands off the ground to lift himself off the ground. Yet, he found himself stumbling forwards and ended up falling again. The boy muttered a curse, as he kneeled on the ground, before attempting to raise himself again. However, this time, he found himself struggling to even raise his head. He had heard a voice. The whisper of the Devil. It was like if gravity had increased tenfold. An overwhelming pressure pressing him down as she descended before them.

At first, he heard something about the byakugan and could only presume she was here for Xia. After all, Kiro definitely did not have a byakugan. Most likely the woman was a Hyūga. A thought which was confirmed as he managed to raise his head up. Kiro found himself kneeling before the Hyūga Matriarch. This was power. A faint tremble he noticed in the magenta eyes of his previous opponent further solidified this was a monster before them. Unlike her flight-or-fight reaction, his first instinct was the latter. His current position shouldn’t be mistaken for fear. No. There was not an ounce of it in his bones. Kiro just needed to see this divine-like power for himself. As he tried to ready himself, he did get the opportunity to witness her display a tiny sliver of that power. Gracefully, the Hyūga swept Xia off her feet, onto the ground, before she spoke with a commanding tone.

‘Both of us?’

Hiding the might of a dragon within, the azure eyes of the Hyūga Matriarch found Kiro as she intentions clear. This caused Kiro to pause, sending the need to fight fade as he grew curious about what she wanted to question. However, the Hyūga Head never got to continue as an arrow suddenly flew in out of no where. Kiro didn’t have much time react as the arrow suddenly exploded into a cloud of ash. Even more arrows flew in after, with Kiro wondering what the fuck was happening. Of course, the Hyūga Head easily avoided all of it. Unfortunately, whoever the attackers were didn’t seem to care about collateral damage as even he had to get some distance.

‘So that’s the bitch shooting those arrows.’

Looking above, a woman surrounded by arrows fell towards the ground. Upon closer inspection, each arrow seemed to have a red string of chakra attached to them. The arrows plummeted into the floor, surrounding the Hyūga Head. It seemed she was considerate enough to focus on one target after all. Crimson liquid spilled out of the shattered vials attached to the arrows and with the snap of her fingers, the substance ignited into fiery circle around the Hyūga Head. This didn’t seem to be any normal fire either, as the flames seemed to burn more ferociously. Kiro even wondered if he could use those flames for himself right now.

The aggressor didn’t seemed to be finished either as the sky was suddenly enveloped by a bright orange light. Like a Phoenix descending from the heavens, the woman decided to puppeteer the flames straight into Hina. The crash lit up the entire arena in a brilliant red hue. It seemed to be more for show than an actual attack as Kiro didn’t feel like he was damaged in any way. Once the light cleared, all eyes had turned to the aggressor, who could to be seen clearly on the arena wall with Xia in one her hands. As Kiro had suspected, she was from Hasa.

‘She must’ve used a chakra string for that bow. Interesting.’

Taking a brief second to analyze the Hasa nin’s choice of weapon, his attention returned back to the Hyūga Head, who didn’t seem to be phased in the slightest. She was more concerned about her clothing. A thought which Kiro could relate to. He disliked when his clothes got ruined in battle. Checking his own clothes would have to come later, though, as a sturdy presence could be felt in the air.

Literally floating downwards from the sky was none other than the Tsuchikage himself. Unlike the Hyūga Head, his pretense wasn’t as suffocating. Kiro couldn’t sense any killing intent from him. It was more like a harmless rock falling down. The rock wouldn’t hurt unless you let it hit you. Just like most rocks, the Tsuchikage appeared to be quite old himself. Of course, age shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness. Fortunately, it seemed like the Tsuchikage was here a neutral party. Kiro knew that the Stone and Hasa has some sort of connection, so he wondered if that played in any role in leading to this intervention. As for what exactly he was potentially protecting them all from, Kiro would like to know too and followed up the Tsuchikage with a similar question for the Hyūga Head.

“Yeah. What is it you want from us?”

———————

“Ahahahahaha! Looks like something interesting is happening down there!”

Laughing like a kid at the circus, the fourth Mizukage watched as the precarious event played out. If that really was the Hyūga Head down there, then perhaps she had noticed what was so special about his favorite toy. However, her priority seemed to be the girls from Hasa as he had expected. Onoki was quick to head down there and had gained a chuckle from Yagura when he mentioned being an unbiased mediator.

With Onoki down there already, Yagura didn’t think his presence was yet needed. She hadn’t exactly aggressed Kiro yet as far as he could tell. Even if she did, he didn’t mind if the boy got a good beating. He would mind if she wanted to take Kiro. Making a finger gun with his right hand, Yagura pointed it at the Hyūga Head like a sniper. Just a little bit more to the left and he’d have a perfect shot. One she couldn’t see coming. Pretending to shoot it, Yagura snickered to himself. It was a good thing he had chosen not to bring Ao with him. Kiro might not be the only one she would be gunning for.

“You know, I might head down there if things start getting too troublesome, Hokage. Lord Hokage?”

Strangely, Minato’s attention seemed to be directed elsewhere. It was in the direction of the Stone brat’s fight. That battle had just ended and Onoki might not be too pleased with the result. Some girl from the run down Rain village had beaten Keito. That had gained a laugh from Yagura too, especially her brazen comments made afterwards. She beat one kid from the Stone and thought she could call out the Kage. It was actually hilarious. Yagura was certain if any of them wanted her gone, it could be done with just the snap of a finger. All it would take was for one of them to give an order to a bodyguard and she would be rotting in some back alley somewhere before the exam was even over. No one would even care. He doubt even the Rain would dare make a move on them. That would be no fun though.

Glancing at the clenched fist of the standing Hokage, Yagura wondered if Minato was actually considering it. He held a rather serious expression on his face as the Rain girl walked away. Little did the Mizukage know, Minato felt a degree of sorrow. From what he could tell, her rage was directed at the five Kage. While he hadn’t been in power during the era where the Rain was simply a battlefield for his village to wage war on, Minato knew of the destruction they had left. The cause of her hate came the inability and unwillingness of those in power to fix the issues that plagued the entire shinobi world. Not just their great villages. He knew what it was like to lose and the disgusting feeling that came with it. Hate only brewed hate and spread it like a plague.

“It’s fine, Lord Mizukage. I’d prefer this not to get out of hand, but I’m certain Lady Hinagiku has her reasons. Which means I’ll support her with whatever means that are necessary. You can go on ahead if you feel concerned though.”

Meanwhile on the outside of the arena, there were four ANBU on each corner. They each had other members with them, but they would be in charge of maintaining a Four Violet Rays Formation. Not only would they extend a secondary around themselves for added protection, they also had other ANBU members guarding them. All they waited for was the order. Meanwhile, evacuation measures were set in place for civilians with many Leaf shinobi currently on standby for aid. Minato just hoped it wouldn’t have to come to that. He would have to trust in Onoki to settle this peacefully as stepping in so soon would show a lack of trust and could potentially escalate the situation.

“I see. Well, I’ll just take some precautions for now then.”

Yagura didn’t really want to show much concern, but the serious tone Minato spoke with for a second meant he would not back down as easily as he thought. It would be wise for him to take the head start given to him, especially considering why Minato was called the Yellow Flash. With a glance across the arena, he could see some jonin move closer to stand near the wall the Hasa girls were at, seemingly to protect the spectators. Snickering, Yagura looked down at the preoccupied Hyūga Head before jumping down himself.

"This might sting a little, but it will be over before you know it."

Azumi had sat in the medical room, within the stadium she had just had her rather explosive battle with Keito, as she had been tended to by one of the Konoha medical ninja. Her hands seemed to shine a green unseen chakra as it worked to treat Azumi's injuries namely that shoulder Keito's blade had struck. It was the duty of this medical staff to ensure that the defeated were within their care, and the victors had been in good enough shape to compete for the progressive rounds.

Course, that had been the least of Azumi's concerns. Her mind had kept racing to that horrific Genjutsu, the embodiment of her worst nightmares and worst memories, and the individual who had released them all at once. More infuriatingly, now that the intensity of these experiences had left her system her mind had raced to the last words he had said to her.

Sorry about all of that-
Azumi shook her head. Much as she tried to dismiss the comment as just a token gesture, the more the idea that he may have expressed sincerity behind it seemed to least be rested as a possibility. Had he apologized for the shot on the shoulder? Had he, somehow, seen what she had experienced in that Genjutsu? If so, why should he care? They had been opponents and she had come from a nation that at best got a token mention in most history books of the larger nations, Azumi seemed to groan. Annoyed by this confliction, it was all a pain in her a....

"Open please."

Azumi had been brough out of her mental confliction when the medical ninja asked her to open her mouth, likely to tend to the tongue that Azumi had nearly bitten off to escape the Genjutsu. With a slight nod she opened up and the medic went to work to treat that wound, which had left Azumi to her thoughts.

"Didn't take long for this to devolve into a circus."
The comment of Ay, the leader of the Land of Clouds, sounded as he sat with that perpetual grump that he had been rather infamous for. The first round of the finals had proceeded and not even a couple matches in it seemed that already there seemed to be some, curious developments which seemed to center on those curious girls of Hasa.

The ramblings of some Ame girl he had not even paid a token thought.

Ay had already arrived in a bit of a sour state, as but one individual of his nation had advanced to the finals. Seems that this current group of Genin needed to refine their skills though his grizzled gaze seemed to focus on Minato as the Leaf's leader seemed to have a troubled expression on his face. Though he quickly whispered to one of his aid, he had little personal stake in whatever this had been, but he advised keeping an eye on the situation as he'd rather be in the know of things.

"Are you certain you have things in hand? Seems even the Yellow Flash hasn't anticipated this." Ay spoke to Minato, his reputation as a field commander had been nothing but the stuff of legends. In truth, he was the one individual among the Kage he had any respect for, the one faster than even him...but if this small situation snowballed into something worse, perhaps there'd be an opening to get something of use out of this.

Karui’s wings buzzed louder for a second as she skirted the explosion and dodged fluidly through the few bullets that had come through following the blast. She found herself growing more accustomed to the boy’s bone attacks—at least those that he had used so far. Her hand ghosted over the tie securing her khopesh to her side, then decided against it, instead passing her open hand over her shoulder, gripping where she’d been grazed by a bone bullet and squeezing it slightly, so more blood oozed out and it looked worse than it was. In truth, it was a rather shallow cut, but if he thought she had been injured, his guard might be slightly lower. She’d hold off on healing until she absolutely had to.

The medical nin let some of her blood drip from her fingers to the arena to drive the charade home, giving a convincing wince to add dramatic effect as she lowered herself to the ground lightly. The wings vanished in a cloud of golden sparkles, though she was fully prepared to release them again to dodge low to the ground or rise up again if need be. Perhaps it’s time for a jutsu or two… Karui’s hands folded into a series of hand seals by her stomach, and she brought her left arm to bear with a muttered “Wind Style: Wind Scythe Jutsu.” Her arm sliced through the air three times, releasing wind blades that followed her arm’s trajectory towards Hisato. Her right arm remained convincingly limp as she gathered her weight below her in a stance ready with bent knees, fully prepared to spring in any given direction and retaliate again at Hisato’s next potential attack.

Ugokasenai Keito, Iwa Genin
Stadium 5 Medical Room
He dreamt of the rain. He ran through the streets of Iwagakure, but Iwagakure was not his home -- it was a far away place, cold and harsh like stone ought to be. Each drop that plopped down on his head felt like a boulder sent crashing into his skull. All the while, all sense of safety and familiarity slipped from the tips of his fingers. Keito reached a hand out for his fading home. That hand pushed out through the hole in his belly and slithered up his chest, wrapping his fingers around someone else's throat.

Keito woke up with a sharp pain passing up through him like a gale force wind upending rooted trees. Voices spoke in rushed, hushed tones around him for a few seconds but faded before he'd regain his senses. Where there'd been a warm, numb feeling in his gut, Keito could feel a harsh, burning sting.

'Who the hell stabs somebody with an umbrella!?' Was the first, true thought that came to Keito's returning mind.

"Oh-oh-oh-hold up," One of the Konoha medical-nin warned the wounded genin as he tried to move and take in his surroundings, finishing some patch-up work on his body with her glowing, green palms. "We've sealed off the wound and stopped your bleeding, but you need surgery to handle a lot of the internal damage to your body; surgery we can't give you right now."

"Uh-" Keito started, finding it hard to concentrate at the moment.

"As soon as we can, we'll have you in the hospital to get all fixed up." The Leaf kunoichi smiled.

"Wait-" He continued, remembering the sound of the blade stabbing into his stomach with an upsetting suddenness.

"Alrighty, we've got to get on to the next stadium in case we're needed. Buh-bye." Waving with a feigned interest, the last of the medical ninja attending to him left in a hurry.

"W-water?" He asked, feeling a dryness in his throat and remembering only the taste of his own blood, "Damn. Does Konoha pay by the hour?"

Keito set his head back against the stiff pillow of the cot the Leaf called a medical bed, but he'd hardly stared at the ceiling - and not even had time to notice his former-foe (and potential killer) receiving treatment of her own on the room's opposite end - when the looming figure of Kitomo Ugokasenai stooped his head under the low door-frame and into the room. The Iwa jonin scanned the room, offering casual disregard for Azumi as he turned toward his now-conscious son.

The elder Ugokasenai covered himself in a drooping, black cloak -- much like Keito's, though it hung to his ankles as opposed to the hip. He had but one eye, and the lower half of his face and most of his throat were gone in place of a clunky, hissing breathing apparatus. A large man, he stood near seven feet tall even after setting his back into an uncomfortable hunch.

"We spent a month training, and for that?" Kitomo shook his head as he walked - each step a thudding stomp - over to his son's side. "A sloppy fight -- a lazy fight."

"Hey, dad." Keito said simply, keeping his eyes closed.

"If I'd known you'd flunk out in the first round, I'd have stayed in the village." Kitomo continued with his grating, mechanized drawl. "Are you a shinobi, or are you just some little punk?"

"I-is that a rhetorical question?" The youngest Ugokasenai couldn't help but ask, his eyes finally opening back up to the reality of his unforgiving parent. His father leaned in, glaring into Keito's soul with a single, mean eye.

"You can be perfect, Keito, perfect -- and even still, if you're a little late even one time, it's all over," Kitomo said with an ominous tone, leaning back away from his close distance to Keito's face, "You were far from perfect, and you were well-more than a little late. Don't spit on your luck today with scared jokes, boy. Late as you can be, the world will go on without you and not think a thing of it. As it has for so many of our clan before. You become another number in those dense history books you dig your nose into so often."

The jonin turned away, shaking his head.

"I'll see you back home." Kitomo spoke as if he were passing a death sentence, and walked out of the room.

It didn't take long for the suddenly alert Keito to scan the room, his eyes settling on Azumi in the opposite end of the room. No wonder he'd been feeling a cold shiver flare up and down his spine.

"Oh," Keito said, his wince as embarrassment-induced as it was pain-induced, "Uh, hi."

“Sounds good!” Bao said with a smile. “It’s nice to meet ya, Goodluck!”

His smile, however, quickly faded. I got cocky earlier and lost… badly. But I don’t get a second chance this time, it’s time to sink or swim!

The tips of his fingers reached into his kunai pouch, gently teasing the handles of the daggers. Be smart, don’t waste your chakra, let’s just test the waters. Once I get a read on him I’ll charge in!

With the flick of his wrist he snatched up three kunai and launched a volley at Mori. Whatever his reaction was, Bao would gain the first piece of information he needed before executing his next attack.

Mori's eyes narrowed as he watched his opponent's fingers go near his kunai pouch, already jumping back to increase the distance between them as he used his wakazashi to block the kunai. "So you're a sneaky one, huh?" Sheathing his weapon, the boy weaved his fingers together as the earth swallowed him, leaving not a trace of his existence other than the kunai strewn around.

Underground, the boy made a suit of armor of rocks and densely packed dirt before sneaking up behind Bao. The plan? Grabbing his ankle and performing the headhunter jutsu that would bury his opponent up to their neck in the ground.

Thankfully before Keito had spurred to life, the medical ninja had just finished the work to heal Azumi's tongue so there'd be no risk of his sudden jerking shifting the focus mid-heal. Azumi glanced as it seemed her first-round foe had returned to life, and was being briefed on his status as he still seemed to be in major care. In truth Azumi wonder how he had survived the shot to his gut, but she guessed the blow avoided any damage to vital organs. Seemed her rash attack had been sloppy, or perhaps his blow had caused her umbrella to shift on impact but Azumi had no way to know.

What mattered was he was up, and Azumi had wished that she was healed up before this scenario could play out. Needless to say sharing a room with someone you had just had a brutal battle with was hard not to make awkward especially given how heated it had gotten at the end. Thankfully someone else had been in the room and he seemed to shift all the awkward air onto him; the man seemed to be older than Keito and if Azumi had to guess he was a parental figure.

Though his words seemed to be anything but supportive.

Azumi had little to call "hers" in the reconstruction period of the Rain, but the one bit of kindness she had was her mother; through the good and the bad, she had been that kind and reassuring presence she needed. Something to help get through the day when the world seemed to beat down upon her, and that seemed absent from this man though as he left those thoughts faded as now Keito's attention had been brough to Azumi as the latter glanced away.

"Um, hey. So, still breathing?"

Needless to say this situation had not been kind for small talk, not that Azumi had the...best experience with such a thing anyway. Especially with someone who had done to her mind what this one had done, but she tried to not let that side show.

Perfect, I’ve learned three things.

The corners of the boy’s lips involuntarily rose as he watched Mori’s reaction to the attack.

One: he prefers to block instead of dodge. This means there’s not as much of a point using my zentogan from a distance.

Bao preformed a few hand seals.

Two: earth jutsu was the first type he used. Considering how quickly he used it after my attack that means he probably has a natural affinity for it, in which case that means I gotta prepare for some good defensive techniques and use stronger attack to break through… this should do.

Two vacuum rings formed in each of his hands and he pushed them together, creating a pressurized sphere that would act like a bomb when detonated.

And three: based on the fact that he used a sword, didn’t dodge, and didn’t counter with ranged projectiles, I’m willing to bet he’s closing the distance right now. In which case, he should pop up somewhere around…

Bao activated his Zentogan and surveyed the ground around him, waiting for Mori to make his move.

…here! Got you! Vacuum Style:

A split second before Mori grabbed his ankle, Bao foresaw the attack and launched his own. He jumped upwards and flipped his momentum before thrusting the sphere into the ground. Upon impact, a destructive rush of air burst outwards, sending shockwaves through the ground and leaving a sizable crater where Bao once stood.

Pluto Bomb!

Ugokasenai Keito, Iwa Genin
Stadium 5 Medical
"Um, hey. So, still breathing?" Keito wanted to make a comment on improper socialization in the Rain, before remembering the sight of a bombed-out and burning school in the memories he'd stolen from Azumi.

"Give it a few minutes, I'll find a way to forget how," He replied, offering a sideways smile shared through pain-grit teeth and forceful breaths. A hand fell to the patched-up wound on his gut, just like at the end of their fight. "Congrats on the win, by the way. You...might wanna clean that umbrella of yours. Hard to tell what's worm guts and what's my guts. Heh."

Somehow, a person who'd tried to murder him just a few moments ago seemed like enjoyable company compared to his dad; at least if she'd finished the job, Keito wouldn't have to survive under the impossible weight of that man's egregious expectations. He couldn't begrudge a fellow shinobi, traumatized by war in a way he was yet to know, doing whatever was expected of her in order to never feel such fear again.

Kitomo knew the pain of war, and had caused plenty back in turn; then the war-torn man forged a steel cage from all his hurt and hate, paranoia and rage, and cast his two sons into it. Now they not only shared the normal duties afforded Iwa genin, but they also bore the shackles of restoring the waning Ugokasenai's washed-out glory.

Keito's eyes maintained focus on Azumi, narrowed in thought; what good could he serve to the world? What good came of him acting as an Iwagakure shinobi should, or of his restoring the clan? Not much, he decided. Not much at all.

~Hisato Gato...~

Hisato began thickening his gauntlets to try take more impact. He would position himself so that he could try jump out of the way, Holding his arms up, he used his gauntlets to try take the impact of most of the first attack, getting hit in the process. He managed to jump out of the way of the second, and was grazed by the third attack as lunged forward to close the gap. Hisato ran forward now using his whip to swing overhead, dropping low to try sweep her legs out from under her. Hisato would thrust the whip at her again in an attemp to hit her in the torso.

(I’m assuming Hisato’s whip is his spine, if not lmk and I’ll edit)
Karui’s eyes narrowed slightly in appraisal, then widened again, betraying her surprise as the boy reached behind him and dragged his spine—or a second one—out of his back like a whip. Guess I was right, it was bone… That revelation cost Karui a second of reaction time, enough to cut it ridiculously close with dodging to the left, wings out and buzzing. But with her immediate need to get out of the way, she didn’t think too much about getting away, staying low to the ground; and the second whip strike would’ve hit her hard if it wasn’t for her khopesh whipping out, left hand moving on impulse. The hooked, flat side of the blade caught one of the vertebrae and directed the strike away from her, but not before it drew a long, hot line of blood down her right arm. It was fairly shallow and didn’t hit any important tendons, but certainly wouldn’t hurt her charade of having a badly injured arm—however much it may sting in the present.

Karui, momentary surprise now forgotten, slammed the hooked blade into the ground, trapping the spine-whip there with the blade flat on the ground, flipping into a handstand as she kicked both feet up at Hisato’s face, then completed the flip with her sword following into a slash at the boy’s chest.

Hisato used his free hand to cover his face, his gauntlet smacked himself in the forehead under the pressure, he pushed with his arm to knock her back. Hisato would thicken his gauntlet to counter the sword strike. Though rather than take the sharp of the blade, Hisato blocked the flat of the blade with his gauntlet pushing the blade away from his chest. With his hand out front still close to the kunoichi, he'd try his luck and go for a quick punch to the torso. Rather then pull his arm back, he lifted it up to strike the bottom of her jaw.

=Nightshade=

Previously Night's Shadow
Karui felt the breath forced from her lungs with a quick jab to her chest, and she dropped to the ground in a low sweep, trying to take Hisato’s legs out from under him. She had managed to twist herself to the side to avoid the jaw punch, and retained hold on her sword, which she brought to bear to stab the boy through the side, aiming to puncture a lung. Regardless of whether it hit, she used her momentum to stand again and make a couple hand signs, then slammed her palm into her own chest. “Lightning Style: Stimulus!” she rasped, and felt a rush of relief as her lungs filled again, along with a spike of pain. She’d have to heal that cracked rib…later. She cut the jutsu short before it healed her arm, then shot forward again before Hisato could think too hard about it, just in case her previous attack hadn’t been enough.

Hisato used a downward block using his gauntlet to strike the kunoichi's arm to block her attack. However the kunoichi took the opportunity to strike again. Hisato barely had time to react. He moved but was hit. He was lucky it didn't hit vitals, but it hurt. He would go to strike the kunoichi's arm again in a attempt to get her to loosen grip of her sword. If this worked, Hisato would try grab the sword and throw it off the battlefield.

Whether this succeed or fail, he would continue his assualt by firing several carpel bullets point blank at her torso aimed mostly for her lungs.

=Nightshade=

Previously Night's Shadow
Karui’s grip did loosen, and the khopesh began to slide in her hand, but muscle memory took over, flipping the sword to a negative grip, flat of the blade against her forearm. She whipped her body around, sending a twinge of pain through her rib, aiming to slice the boy, then disengaged when he started firing bones as bullets again. Her wings released and pulled her backwards, and she dodged fluidly through the bullet hail. Whenever a bullet grazed her, the thin cuts flowed gold for a moment and disappeared, and she was moving too fast for it to be clear. As she flew, she diverted a small amount of chakra towards healing the crack in her rib.

The medical nin wasn’t sure how long the boy was planning on firing bullets, but she was sure that it was a lot more likely that her chakra-fueled dodges were going to burn through her reserves faster than replicating and firing bones from a stationary position would. If Karui was wrong about it she certainly wouldn’t complain, but it was better to err on the side of caution. Abruptly she turned towards Hisato in the air, bringing her sword directly in front of her, and shot forward, a bullet herself, the front of her sheathed in chakra like a shield. She dove like a raptor with its eyes on a particularly juicy rabbit, or a tarantula hawk coming down on a spider like a demon fresh from hell. Her antennae dissipated as her sword arm was coated with a bubble of chakra, coming to a point just past the tip of her sword, a stinger that would inject paralyzing chakra on contact. It wouldn’t last for long, but certainly long enough for her to knock the boy out.

If I can graze him, it’s over.

In the event of Karui’s sudden burst of speed and quick turn not being sufficient to graze an unprotected part of Hisato’s body, she’d reveal the superficial nature of her right arm’s injuries by suddenly switching her sword grip and attempting to catch him off guard immediately after being avoided.

The girl managed to maintain grip of her weapon, and Hisato managed to block the incoming slice attack with his gauntlet. His gauntlet angled so that the attack would slide off. Karui then shot herself as a bullet. She looked rather intimidating. Hisato knew if he wanted any chance of standing after this he would need to use a lot of chakra. Hisato pulled his whip in, Hisato would coil his whip like a shield with the primary purpose to divert a majority of the attack's power away from Hisato.

Hisato took a big side step to the side to avoid direct hit, and used the coiled whip to try avoid most of the damage. Hisato grew various bones from his arms. Hisato knew his chakra reserves were taking a hit. This fight would need to end soon. Upon impact, Hisato slid back, nearly falling over. Hisato would attempt to swing his arm in an arcing motion to get a good swipe on the kunoichi.

Mori's eyes widened as Bao seemed ready for his attack, setting off some kind of explosion that broke parts of his armor and leaving him gasping for air, even with his armor. Breathing heavily, the boy weaved hand signs before retreating underground. This Kumo kid had some weird kind of jutsu, he would have to play it safe. So far he had seen a massive explosion, so close range was probably not the play. His armor was cracked and broken, but probably could take one or two more hits before it needed to be replaced.

Mori had extensive knowledge of his current jutsu, Hiding Like A Mole, having used it so many times that it was practically his signature move. One of the finer details some might not know was that he had a permanent lock on his opponent, as long as they touched the ground. Thankfully Bao was in the middle of a big crater, so his movement options were limited. Gathering a big chunk of chakra from his reserves, the boy performed another jutsu. Flooded Trap Hole. The ground in front of him split open until it reached the surface, creating a big hole filled with tar at the bottom. By now, a crack would start to form on the surface as Bao's nice warm bath was ready for him.

-----------

Taji watched the fight, clacking her tongue in a disapproving manner. "A digger, typical. Leave it to Iwa to have someone who plays dirty in the finals. Bao better finish this guy quickly, or this will get quite annoying."

Village Hidden in the Leaf, Chunin Exams Arena – Day of the Exams
Hinagiku

‘Alright, that’s enough posturing…’

As things in the arena drew to a stalemate, Hinagiku counted off the number of Jonin who’d taken their positions. If anything untoward happened, they’d be able to protect the audience. With nothing else holding her back, Hinagiku turned her attention to the Hasa girls and prepared to—‘Fence-Sitter…?’

“Well met, Lord Tsuchikage, I wouldn’t have expected you to speak up, it’s quite unlike your usual style…”

With a moniker like ‘Fence Sitter’, it wasn’t hard to infer the Tsuchikage’s usual style of handling things. He was slow and meticulous, to the point of seeming indecisive. And yet…the Fence Sitter had moved from his fence…

While the Hasa kunoichi’s attack had hardly phased her—they were clearly more flare than force—Onoki’s intervention caused her to frown. It was yet impossible to be assured of the old timer’s intentions. Was he here for the girl…? She wondered; if so, what could’ve possibly drawn him in? The supposed Byakugan…?

She had personally inspected the girl with the so-called byakugan and she certainly didn’t have it. However, if the Stone was involved…

There were few ways to completely fool the Byakugan, but she wouldn’t put it past the Stone to have one or two of them in their back pocket.

But that was all speculation, which could very well be wrong; and if it was wrong that means he was here for the boy…and the implications of that were far grander.

That was the real reason Hina hesitated. The boy clearly came as a representative of the Mist…as provocation perhaps? She had not missed the Mizukage’s playful ‘shooting’ and his advance onto the field; those actions, paired with the Mist’s brazen display of an Uchiha…what was the Mist trying to do?

No, more importantly, if the Mist was trying to start something, what did the Stone have to do with it?

The possibility that some secret Mist-Stone alliance had been struck was most concerning; but it was clear that they—whoever they constituted—didn't want things to come to a head. Despite its seemingly simple and careless phrasing, Onoki's words were carefully curated to be a veiled warning as well as an offer to diffuse hostilities. He must've explicitly mentioned her acting 'alone' to convey the message that the nebulous they were willing to see this an action carried out by her in her capacity as the head of the Hyūga clan and not in her capacity as a representative of the Leaf. It was a truly nuanced way of 'turning a mountain into a molehill, and then turning a molehill into nothing at all'; but also warned that any forward actions would escalate in a conflict at the international level, between villages.

For all his age, the Tsuchikage's was as sharp and bastardly as ever.

In any case, it was a small fortune that she stumbled upon this set-up now, granting the Leaf some forewarning and some time that they could use to prepare for the days ahead. Although it pained her to play into the Tsuchikage's hands, it wouldn't be wise to reject his offer. Perhaps Lord Minato, throughout his discussion with the other Kage, would have gleamed additional details that could aid in putting the pieces of this puzzle together. No doubt the Yondaime was several steps ahead of even her and the jonin council was already being gathered and briefed.

She flashed a flattering smile at the Tsuchikage, her face flushed from the heat. "You'll have to excuse me, Lord Tsuchikage, something I saw got me a little excited. It wouldn't do to disturb the sanctity of the examinations, so I'll shelve my curiosity for now."

She bid him adieu with a polite dip and turned to leave.

It seems these exams were but a prelude to something much bigger...

Thirteen Years Ago...

“Merry Christmas~”

That soft-spoken greeting came from the nurse who had delivered a child only a short while ago. Wrapped in a dark blue woolen blanket was a woman’s newly born son, seemingly sound asleep. The child’s jet black hair strongly resembled his father’s. Even as the nurse spoke, none of the words actually got to her. The woman’s gaze lay solely on the baby boy that was transferred into her hands.

Nothing could compare to the first time a mother touched their baby, but this was a close second. Sitting up on the medical bed, the brunette brought the boy close to her chest. As soon as body contact was made, the boy’s eyes slowly opened, making contact with his mother’s watery blue-violet.

‘Black eyes hm? The Uchiha blood must run deep in you.’

Once the door shut after the nurse’s exit, only the sound of soft chewing was heard from across the room. She hesitated to look in the direction of the annoying sound, not wanting to break eye contact with the baby. For all she knew as a first time mother, this was an important moment for them to bond.

“I can bet you didn’t listen to a single thing that girl said ‘Rina.”

The woman’s face flushed in embarrassment as the mellow tone of his voice reached her ears. It wasn’t fair that he could say even a part of her name so naturally. Rorina’s gaze remained intently on the baby and could only watch as the child tried shifting to face the direction of the voice. With that she too was forced to look at her child’s father.

The man’s upper half was covered in a black winter coat, with only the sleeves being a fair shade of red. His short black hair stuck out in multiple directions, less tamed than the baby boy’s. Other than that, the Leaf spy did his best to look like a common citizen of the Mist.

“All I needed to know was if my baby is safe. You on the other hand...” The woman watched as he casually took another bite of his snack while sauntering towards them. She continued glaring at the bitten cheese stick in the man’s right hand. Half envious. Half irritated.

Noticing the uneasiness in her eyes, the man paused by the bedside. There was a playful grin hidden among his closed, chewing mouth. “Oh, you want it now? My bad, I know how much you love sticks...”

Almost on instinct, Rorina pulled the baby away and shifted to the other side of the bed. His dirty thoughts would infect the mind of her child if this continued. She couldn’t allow it! “Zai, you won’t lay a hand on this child until you swear to me that he won’t learn of your foul behavior.”

The outburst from Rorina was to be expected. A strong, powerful woman such as her could never begin to understand how the mind such as his processed. He had to convince the woman before it was too late.

“Listen here ‘Rina. If a boy grows up without certain knowledge, they won’t understand how to handle women. One can’t hope too achieve true enlightenment without growing with this knowledge! They’ll end up a loner, stuck in a corner brooding about how much life sucks. It’s the same with most of the Uchiha. None of them take advantage of the Sage’s gift to us. You don’t want that for Kiro, do you?”

Unnoticed by both of them, the baby had a little reaction to the name ‘Kiro’. However, Rorina couldn’t believe her ears or the bullshit Zaiki was spewing. In fact, she made it a point to cover the child’s ears. “You animal! I won’t let you corrupt my baby. And did you just call him Kiro?! I thought you were joking! That’s literally combining our two names!”

Around the second mentioning of ‘Kiro’, the baby began to wail, causing Rorina to flinch. Instantly she sat up and fixed her posture while trying to comfort the child. Meanwhile, Zaiki was running his free hand through his hair, believing that it was his fault the baby had started crying. No matter what answer he gave, Rorina would still be pissed. In that case, telling the truth was probably the safest bet.

“Well I couldn’t think of anything else. I just made sure not to have Uchiha anywhere near his name. Besides, aren’t we supposed to register the name before the baby is born?”

That response seemed too agitate the woman even more. Rorina didn’t even bother looking his way and continued to focus on comforting their child during her response. “You’re such a dunce. ‘Kirei’. ‘Shiro’. Those types of names won’t stick out. ‘Kiro’ is too uncommon. Even though the Blood Mist era is nearing it’s end, we should still be taking any precautions possible.”

It was easy to miss, but on the mention of the name ‘Kiro’, the baby paused it’s cries for a brief moment. When Rorina continued on though, the cries began again. However, this did not go unnoticed by Zaiki as he took another bite of the cheese stick. “Honestly, I’m fine with him having an uncommon name. It makes him even more special than he already is. Besides, I think he likes being called Kiro. See, listen. Kiro... Kiro... Kiro...”

He continued to say the name in a softer, soothing tone. It was almost hypnotizing. Even Rorina’s nerves began to calm themselves. Each time Zaiki said the name, the baby’s cries grew softer. Eventually the cries stopped all together.

The Uchiha held a triumphant grin on his face, knowing he had won the battle. Rorina herself let out a soft giggle as the boy in her hands seemed confused by the silence.

“Kiro... that name will bind both of us together, now and forever. As for our child, even when he’s alone, just hearing that name will connect him to us. Hopefully we don’t give him any memories...”

As Rorina spoke, Zaiki just nodded as if that was his idea the entire time. After the Uchiha finished chewing on the last of the cheese stick, he yawned and stretched his arms.

“Do you think he’ll be mad when he finds out his birthday gifts are his Christmas presents? I mean, I know I’d be pissed if that were the case.” It was a random question and he doubted the child would entertain hatred due to the lack of presents. Anything was possible though. The last thing Zaiki wanted was for Kiro to fall into that darkness. He had to prove there was another way for the Uchiha.

“Not my child. If he starts complaining, then I won’t get him anything. It’s that simple. As for you, since it’s Christmas, I’ll let you hold him as my present.” Rorina was stubborn on the surface, but deep down she held a warm heart. It was something Zaiki admired about her. Hopefully Kiro would grow to see that side of her as well. After giving Kiro a gentle kiss on the forehead, Rorina lifted him up into Zaiki’s waiting hands.

Holding the child in his arms for the first time, Zaiki’s expression grew more serious. The child served as a soft reminder of the upward climb that lay before them. Even now, his time was dwindling. It was each time he set foot in the Mist. However, he did it for his village. The Will of Fire continued to burn brightly deep inside of him and that was his only reason for persisting as far as he did. Looking down into a reflection of his own black eyes, Zaiki made a promise to the boy.

‘Kiro, I swear as long as I draw breath, you will never fall into that curse. We will prove that the cycle can be broken.’

Onoki, Third Tsuchikage
"The stone that seldom moves, moves with a purpose," Onoki said with a wispy-haired wisdom. When Hinagiku bowed, he bowed in return -- though took care to make his bow slightly stiffer than her's. "Move as we may, Lady Hyuga, may we move ."

With Hinagiku making her exit, Onoki spoke while looking almost directly to where the Fourth Hokage sat (now standing) observing the situation, radiating an intensity that seemed to reverberate through the whole arena, observing the situation.

Young as she was, the Fence-Sitter couldn't write off the young head of the noble Hyuga clan; the coldness in her eyes stung so strong the genin had hardly been able to move from her warpath. And he could tell even as she exchanged royal pleasantries with someone as high-sat as himself, that Hinagiku had been reading him - and everything around her - like a book of haiku; easily digested, pages turned one to the next in whimsical amusement.

Yagura Karatachi was a bold lad in his own right, Onoki had to admit...but two Kage seemed to make a dangerous crowd.

"Lord Fourth, see to it that your lad is okay," The Tsuchikage said, chuckling a little, "Lady Hinagiku seemed to have put the fear of God in him."

His back to the ladies of Hasa, Onoki the Fence-Sitters chair levitated back up into the sky again without offering them so much as a word; hell, who were they to him? Brushing the incident off as if it'd been a mere pause in activities, the Third Tsuchikage returned to the Kage seating area with a congenial smile on his face -- ready to get back to schmoozing with the Hokage for as long s he could, before the Lady Hyuga arrived.

Previously Night's Shadow
Karui’s strike sheered off the side of the makeshift shield, and she grit her teeth, landing in a three-point stance. The chakra around her dissipated, and she felt naked without the extra sensory input from her antennae. Her abilities without them certainly weren’t at all sub-par, but the additional input she received from the antennae was substantial to say the least. But they used up chakra she didn’t want to waste; while it was hardly anything in the beginning, over extended use it added up.

As an off-balance Hisato’s arm bones extended out from his skin and he took a swipe at her, Karui saw a window of opportunity. Every protruding bone was something the hooked end of her khopesh could latch onto, and she abruptly switched tactics, keeping her blade in her left hand and lashing out with the tip to hook one of the bones heading toward her. Meanwhile, her right hand, limp at her side, was forming single-hand seals as fast as possible. The moment her khopesh’s hook found purchase on one of the bones, Karui lifted her “wounded” right arm into a point-blank wind slash. “Wind Scythe Jutsu!”

“Looks like the party is over already.”

After Yagura jumped onto the battlefield, the Hyūga Head proceeded to make her exit. Bold as she was, the presence of two Kage must’ve been enough to call for a swift retreat. However, the byakugan in her eyes had most certainly told her all that she needed know. Smirking, Yagura was fine with that. The only one trying to keep it a secret was the brat himself. What was he trying to prove? Whatever it was, he had clearly failed. Passing the Tsuchikage, Yagura snickered at the remark of the old man. The boy really had frozen up when the Hyūga Head appeared. Even now, he couldn’t seem to move.

“Damnit! I couldn’t do anything to her.”

Punching a fist into the ground, Kiro cursed at his incapability to do anything to the Hyūga Head. He had just remained their frozen, in awe of the might she carried. By the time he was ready, it was already over. The footsteps of the Mizukage, who drew closer, only served to further increase his disappointment.

“I mean, what were you gonna do? Look at the shape that girl put you in. You can’t even stand up right now.”

With a chuckle, Yagura now stood over Kiro as he glanced up in the direction of the Hasa girls on the wall. While the girl appeared sure did appear injured, she at least wasn’t in the pathetic position as the brat at his feet. It did help that she had someone else to quickly pick her up. Fortunately for them, they were probably in the clear for now. He was willing to bet once the Hyūga Head rattled off what she had discovered about the boy, the Leaf would prioritize the known rather than the unknown. Now that Yagura thought about it, like that Hasa girl was for Roulan, he was technically Kiro’s assistance. This was probably the part where he should help him.

“Need some help kid?”

“Shut up! I don’t need help from you!”

Evidently seething as he spoke, Kiro quickly shut down any assistance from the Mizukage. From the outside looking in, it would appear as if Kiro was just being extremely stubborn and prideful. The boy glared at the exit of the arena, attempting to steady his breath as the effects of blood loss was starting to kick in. He needed to get patched up soon. However, Kiro didn’t want to accept help. Once again, the boy tried to get up only to stumble back down and here some laughter from Yagura.

“Heh. As I thought. This is just pitiful. You had to use your special technique already. Attracted that Hyūga with your other specialty. Even that clever trick you hid up your ass. Everything was in your favor. There is no excuse. You were just completely outplayed by her. So what are you gonna do about it?”

With a smirk, Yagura watched the boy’s unyielding expression slowly fade away. Those words seem to cause him to ponder his actions. Kiro knew he had the power, so needing more didn’t seem to be the issue. She basically had control the entire fight. She had the perfect answer to nearly everything he threw at her. She capitalized on every opportunity. What could he have done better then?

“I-“

Seeming to understand something, Kiro was about to answer when his voice was cut short and his eyes turned clear before falling face first into the ground. Having knocked the boy out with a hit to the back of his neck, Yagura laughed again.

“Hahahaha! You think anyone actually cares?”

Then glancing at the exit where a medical unit was now on standby, he motioned then to come over. One might think it was a cruel act to knock out his own ninja, but Yagura didn’t care. He had his reasons. Before heading off, he looked back at the two Hasa girls. Primarily the one that fought Kiro.

“You did good that fight. Keep it up!”

Smiling, Yagura gave the girl a thumbs-up when he turned his back, leaving the crowd probably confused as to why the Mizukage appeared to be complimenting her while knocking out his own. If anything, the Hasa girls should’ve taken that as their queue to move out since they had the situation handled. Or at least the situation was probably about to shift focus. Jumping back up into the spectator booth, Yagura snickered as his eyes found the Tsuchikage, who had told him to check if Kiro was alright. Knocking him out probably didn’t look like that’s what he was doing.

“Ah. Well, what can I say? That boy likes the rough treatment. Don’t ask. That was certainly an interesting turn of events, though. What do you think, Fourth Hokage? Hm?”

By the time the two Kage had returned, there had been a Leaf ANBU by the ear of the Hokage whispering something. A few moments later, Minato stood up and then bowed respectfully to the other Kage in the room.

“Apologies, Lord Kage. An urgent matter just came up. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

With that, Minato suddenly vanished. It was courtesy of his famed Flying Raijin technique that allowed him to instantaneously teleport to any location he had marked with a special sealing tag. Not a second later, Minato appeared in a room where the three elders of Konoha were seated, currently bickering with each other over the aggressive actions Hinagiku had taken.

“So what’s this about the byakugan being in the hands of another village, I hear?”

The first one to notice Minato and question about the whereabouts of the dōjutsu was none other than Danzo Shimura. With one eye shrouded behind bandages, one could only wonder the amount secrets he had hidden along with it. Of course, ever since that fateful incident over a decade ago, involving the Uchiha, Minato had grown to trust the man’s judgement. Like with Lord Fugaku, he preferred to keep important matters relating to a clan private information until everything between a few until everything was sorted. He would provide Lady Hinagiku that benefit too. Not that she’d know of past arrangements.

“Hmph. Ever since that war, that young lady has been letting that title get to her head.”

Speaking on the Hyūga Head was Homura Mitokado. He was seemingly a bit skeptical of her brazen actions after asserting the mantle atop the Hyūga Head. Not they could do much about the current hierarchy of the Hyūga clan. In fact, a feminine voice could be heard chuckling beside Homura.

“Would you prefer Hakabi? My, how the Hyūga have fallen. Even her daughter...”

Shaking her head was Koharu Utatane. The final elder was an older woman around the same age as Homura and Danzo. They had been elders for as long as Minato could remember. Like the Third Hokage before him, Minato would have to respect their opinions even he didn’t always agree with them. With an awkward chuckle, Minato spoke up in an attempt to reassure their concerns.

“No need to worry. I’m certain Lady Hinagiku will be here any moment to fill us in on what led her to act as such. For now, let us discuss what I have discerned on my end.”

Meanwhile, to Yagura’s surprise, Minato displayed why he was called the Yellow Flash and seemed leave them by themselves. It appears the Fourth Hokage could trust them to an extent. Shrugging to himself, the Fourth Mizukage just laid back in his seat to watch the rest of the exams. He wasn’t really thinking of doing anything suspicious anyways. The exams currently had his attention and he was especially interested to see that other Uchiha do battle with the Hyūga, just like presumably everyone else in the arena.

“Q-quiyue–cough

Blood dribbled from Roulan’s lips. With the situation ‘handled’, her voice was feeble as adrenaline and energy drained away.

“Shhh–no talking. Your ribs are shattered, you’re bleeding internally and…I think you’ve punctured a lung. We need to get you to Chang-Chang.”

The stars had made themselves scarce without being prompted, hitching a ride on Quiyue’s summoned hawk. As they winged beyond the boundaries of the village, the Hero star frowned at her little sister.

“What an idiotic maneuver, couldn’t come up with anything better?”

“Had to make it…convincing.”

“Is that all?”

“…underestimated…him.”

Quiyue frowned but said no more.

They descended upon the field where Asahi and Ying were playing cards, their descent scattered the cards and ruined the game but not before Ying sneakily swapped out a few of her cards and declared herself the victor.

Within seconds Hasa’s other medical ninja, the Efficacious Star, had rushed over.

"Hey!" Asahi shouted as her cards got scattered, ruining the perfect victory. "I want a rematch!" She shouted before turning to see what caused the strong stream of air. Her clear eyes widen in surprise as she noticed her sister being brought in, injured. "Who did that to her?!" She rose to her feet and rushed towards them. "Let's go kill them! I'm ready! Where's Karui?!" Her faced filled with horror as the worst scenario began to shape her imagination. "Was she killed?! Kidnapped?!" Her breathing increased as she clenched her fists and began pacing back and forth. "Stupid person who hurt my sister!" She shouted as red chakra began to fume from her back and shoulders. "This was stupid coming here and going to their stupid tournament, we don't have to prove anything to them!"

Asahi dropped the white and purple candy she was saving for her sisters as she grabbed her head with her hands and began to stomp the ground furiously. "I bet it was those stupid Hyugas! I hate them so much!"

She suddenly went silent as she noticed she had accidently stepped on the candy, crushing them. The chakra began to fade away as her eyes got watery. "Sagiso's candy!" She cried as she quickly picked them up and began trying to clean them with her coat. "Hold on Sagiso! I'll have them as good as new, I promise." She looked over to her sister with a big grin, but was clearly holding back her tears, before sitting down and began working on the crushed sugary treats.

Outside the Hidden Leaf — Day of the Exams

“S-stop bawling…I’ve had worse.”

Sagisō’s confident bluster came off weaker than she’d hoped, what with the punctured lung that had her gasping between breaths.

“D-don’t make t-trouble for us,” she complained light-hearted and weakly, her eyes swimming with new worries as Asahi seemed to lose control for a moment. “Y-you can’t go on a-a rampage.”

Beyond her injuries, there were also her worries. She was just as worried as Asahi was about their sisters Lixue and Karui. They needed to head back, follow through with the rest of their plan. Unfortunately, she was in no condition to assist. Worse yet…she eyed the crying Asahi, a mix of affection and trepidation.

Around them, a small war party had assembled, eyeing Asahi carefully. Just in case they needed to put her down until she could regain control. It was a somewhat practiced formation at this point, but the yet untamed power of the two tails was enough to strike fear into even their hardened hearts.

As Chang-Chang approached and pulled out her weapons, a set of needles, Sagisō zoned out. She could feel her chakra being drawn upon by the medical ninja as she worked, her water affinity being used to create and sustain a set of liquid, internal stitches.

She wouldn’t be able to fight or do much as all as she’d need to focus on maintaining the flow of chakra to the stitches until she could receive more permanent treatment.

“You said…candy?” Sagisō closed her eyes and slightly opened her mouth, after a few moments of silence she shot another look at Asahi.

“Well…? I’m not gonna feed myself.”

While Sagisō received treatment, the Hasa around them loosened their guards slightly. Qiuyue stepped away, eyeing the real mastermind behind Hasa’s meticulous preparations—the Knowledge Star, Meihui. Her hair was frazzled, and dark circles framed her deep-sunk eyes, bloodshot from sleep deprivation.

“You should take a break; your plan is working even better than expected. I thought I’d have had to use the signal for sure.” She cast a glance towards the cave they’d stayed in, covered with more sustained concealment barriers. At the depths of which were many wild animals, mostly birds, and rodents. Attached to each of them was a single paper bomb.

Quiyue turned back to Meihui and winced, she was chewing her lips raw. The Knowledge star stared intently as a set of papers in front of her; twisting lines fashioned into a small but comprehensive map of a section of the Leaf village. Various routes were outlined in red.

“We’re not done yet…” Meihui shook her head. “As long as we’re in the Land of Fire, we’re in danger. Things are going right so far, but that could change very quickly. There’s no way to predict everything that could go wrong, but it’s my job to try anyway.”

“She’s right,” a new voice stepped in—the Brave Star, Haoran. “We each have our roles in this, hers is to plot us a path to success. Ours—”

She paused, gesturing to the three girls behind her.

“—are to die, paving that path for the rest of you.”
