Eh, early science was any explanation (usually the wrong one) for why something happened and then cannonified by some bigwig until another bigwig came up with a new understanding.

Then let me show you some magic with science;
Two numbers a & b
Let a = b
Multiply both sides by a: a²= ab
Subtract b² from both sides:
a² - b² = ab - b²
Simplify; a² - b² => (a + b)(a - b) {difference of squares}
(ab - b²) => b(a - b)
now we have
(a + b)(a - b) = b(a - b)
Cancel (a - b) on both sides.
a + b = b
but a = b
therefore b + b = b
thus 2b = b
thus 2 = 1
