    As far as the Crystal thing goes, was it a normal egg or the one the Day care couple give you for free? If it was a later, it has a 50% chance of being shiny, so that not really a big deal.

    The problem is that chaining only exists in 4th Generation. As far as Emerald goes, it is entirely up to chance. The calculation is based off of your trainer ID in relation to the personality value of the Pokemon you are encountering.
