The moon was a waning crescent with several dark stratus clouds passing over it from time to time. There was a light fog in the air; enough to blur the few distant lanternlights that still shone at this hour.
Augustus sat alone in his house at the top of a cobblestone tower, drinking wine from the bottle while peering out the window. His house was higher than most, although many buildings started to use several stories since the Eternal Night began. He was near the city limits as well, where there was a wall to keep outside demons outside. He took a swig of his wine and then slammed it back onto the small wooden table he sat at. He propped his elbows up onto the table, rubbing his tired eyes before running his fingers through his hair.
He leaned back in his chair, and felt a tremor. He paused, looking around. Another. This one was more noticeable, and the rhythm was like a giant's footsteps. When the third tremor struck, it did not end so quickly, being accompanied by a long row of tall explosions coming from the ground, cutting through the wall and into the city. After the initial flashes of orange, there left was a giant fault in the ground, emitting a blood red glow, with creatures both scrambling and soaring out of it. Already were bloodcurdling shrieks from humans and demons alike filling the air. And came a giant, gaunt hand with spindly, clawed fingers grabbing the edge of the hole, crushing a few demons that were unlucky enough to be in that place at that time. It did the same with its other hand on the other side. As the demon hoisted itself up, it looked to be nothing but red flesh shrink-wrapped onto a skeleton, with it's eyelids sown shut and hundreds of beady eyes bulging from its toothless mouth. It lifted a foot above ground and used that one to propel its other, now standing at around 70 feet tall.
Back in Augustus's house, he was casually dressing himself in his rusted armor. He had just wrapped up when a demon burst through the cobblestone wall. This breed was standing at approximately 7 feet tall, slobbering a green substance, and had the head and wings of a horsefly, the torso and biceps of a bodybuilder, the forearms and paws of a bear, and hind legs of a dog. He didn't have his sword at the moment, it was on his bed 10 feet to his left. He glanced that way and back at the demon, before making a beeline to his weapon. He was intercepted by the demon, however, but had the time to raise his buckler to block its mouthparts from becoming acquainted with his neck. He quickly reached over the horrific mash-up's shoulder and slammed his palm into its abdomen, turning around and pushing it into the wall behind him. He shoved off the hybrid and dashed the rest of the way to his sword, as the demon recovered. Augustus grabbed the sword and turned into a thrust, as the demon sprang at him, and kebabbing the thing's head. He tossed it out of the hole it had made and flicked the blood off his sword, lumbering down the stairs of the building.
