Shen: King of Digimon

Previously Shen: King of the Mist
“...I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.” Kai muttered.

this girl. She’s no Kiro, that’s for sure. I wonder if she will make it past the first exam. I do hope we make the mist look good this year, it would be shameful to come second to these outsiders.

Looking around the room, he spotted many familiar faces...and some new ones. A odd mime staring at uncomfortable examinees, A boy directly next to him that appeared greener than broccoli, amongst many veterans here that already knew his style.

“...Yes...?”

Reaver growled in response to Baiyan. She made it sound like he came out of left field. She frustrated him to no end. Instead of outright attacking her he stomped a step forward angrily.

“You known why I’m here!” Reaver growled. “It’s about the trip, of course!”

Reaver looked side to side, making sure no one was there. Seeing the coast be clear, Reaver turned back to the blind girl.

“That trip you saw things, heard things you weren’t supposed to. You witnessed Michi-erg...the other one. I called you to make sure you wouldn’t share around that this other one is still alive!”

Reaver stomped again, punching a piece of debris in the road, destroying it upon impact. It appeared he was greatly ashamed about how he was presented during the later half of their journey.

.....

Flashback: January

New to this place...these people. Normally Reaver would feel absolutely disgusted about the place, wanting to burn it down. But now? He just felt...uneasy. The place appeared more colorful than what he was used to...in fact, everything seemed to. Did Azumi’s shirt always appears that bright of green?

After looking at Sagiso for a while, Reaver finally clicked the pieces together. It was her. The one back in the leaf village who tried to attack his armor to no avail. She prevented him from getting that trophy that was Kiro. He tightened his fist, but took no immediate action, especially knowing that he had no drugs or suit. He bit his tongue and kept moving on. There was a time and place...just not now.

“Say...what are we doing?” Came The deep voice of Reaver though the mask, sounding oddly unsure of himself.

Furījia

A broad sleeve covered her nose which wrinkled uncomfortably from the overpowering scent of flowers. A number of people had already entered the examination room and Furījia saw no further reason to lollygag in the lobby. She stood up and brushed off her dress, scanning the room she noted the percentage of Konoha shinobi was rather high. The number was comforting, but even more so reminded the girl of the weight of her duties. If it were possible she wanted to see this very number of shinobi returning to the village and not a single one less.

As she drew towards the connecting passage, almost exiting the lobby, she tapped her fingers against her stylized shinobi insignia and, by running a current of electricity through it, caused it to illuminate and project the leaf's symbol in flashing light. The gesture caught more than a few eyes, but Furījia cared only for the ones from her village.

"Good Luck~"

With encouraging words and an equally energizing smile, the Hyūga heiress dipped into the examination room.

Yasu

The subtle motion caught Yasu's eye: the brush of her fingers against a feather tucked neatly into her hair—his feather. Her matching awkwardness was a comfort that lessened his disappointment.

"No hug for me...?"

He dared not speak loud enough for her to hear; instead, he covered his own awkwardness with a cough and a faltering, if slightly flustered smile.

"H-hey Tomiko, it really has been a while, huh?"

He paused, eyes wandering for an appropriate response. This was usually where you complimented the girl, right? Tomiko had never been one to pick up on subtleties and minutiae; so, he didn't think she wanted to hear shallow flattery. It had to be something real, something genuine.

She'd always looked sturdy and solid on her feet, but now she looked even more so. It was evident to Yasu's sharp eyes that his friend had gone through a great deal of physical training. He knew how badly she'd taken her loss at the last chunin exams, it was almost as bad as his... Now that she was back at the Chunin exams it was only right that someone should recognize the fruits of her training.

He had his compliment.

"You look...firm."

Sagisō

"No, actually. I didn't."

Sagisō smacked her lips together and gave a nonchalant shrug.

"It's a title," she added, "nothing to fuss over."

She turned to the crowd of people slowly entering the examination room and then pointed out as a girl with flaming red locks traipsed along.

"I'm here on escort duty, we've got two Stars participating in the exams this time, they're scouting out the current batch, we've got some plans to make a bit of a name for ourselves."

She paused. "We'll also be sitting in on the fancy meeting all the nations are having, it's open-invitation, so why not."

Sagisō — Flashback

"She should be," Licking her lips, Sagisō eyeballed the tavern counter, the prospect of food evidently on her mind.

She shuffled forward and slid onto a wooden stooling, rattling off an order of dinner sandwiches and drinks to the tavern maid before she picked up with Amari.

"I looked into it, her wounds weren't fatal, and Suwen's skill is without question. She'll be up and at 'em soon, a couple of days at most."

Baiyan

"I saw something I wasn't supposed to? Witnessed something I shouldn't have?"

The smallest of innocuous pouts played on the Sword Star's lips, her lightly chipper mood in no way influenced by the team's resident, vertically challenged, ball of murder.

"You must be mistaken; I'm blind."

Sema looked at Aku confusedly as she followed him around to a more isolated place. She was shocked for a fraction of a moment as he stammered out a response awkwardly and got even more perplexed when he let there be silence after he responded to a portion of what she said and his further response to Sema's attempt to talk.

He's just another Sand ninja, I don't see why we shouldn't be able to speak with each other.

"Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with being a late bloomer if you really are less experienced at your age. As long as you put in the work you should do fine in the exams," she said with a smile.

"But if you really don't want me here I guess I can just register by myself..." Sema mumbled, replacing her smile with a glum frown and turning her eyes to the ground.

Aku stood completely still as he watched the short, orange haired girl stare down at her feet. From what he could tell, the frown on her face was genuine, and the disappointment in her voice was clear too. Even someone with as little experience with social interaction as Aku could tell what he said had upset her.

Ah, damnit... dad always told me not to make girls upset. I shouldn't befriend her, for her sake, but I need to fix this somehow...

Aku took another glance at Sema's sullen appearance, his determination to keep away from others crumbling at the sight of the crestfallen Suna girl. He shook his head slightly, fully aware he was breaking his promise to himself and potentially putting her in danger, but he felt awful for declining her invitation.

It couldn't hurt to at least sign up with her... I'll be more firm in telling her it's not safe to be around me afterwards.

The older boy sighed audibly, rubbing the back of his neck as he extended his other hand forward under the small girl's face so that it was visible to her. Even if Aku felt worse knowing he'd have to tell her off eventually, he couldn't just leave her upset like this right now.

"Alright, fine. We can go get signed up together. Just... stop looking at the floor and frowning like that, please. My name's Akuenba, but you can just call me Aku."

More than anything, he just hoped that last piece of information didn't sound familiar to her. He was aware that he was at least somewhat known around the Hidden Sand, and he didn't need his reward for trying to cheer her up to be recognition of his past.

Rainy, cold, gloomy. If Mori had to describe Ame in three words or less, he'd choose those three. He knew Ame was the village hidden in the rain, but damn this was excessive. If Iwa got this much rain, they'd be flooded away! The genin sighed, hoping that he didn't catch a cold. But his travelling partner didn't care, she probably didn't even consider it a possibility. Tomiko had dashed forward, leaving her friend in the rain with a saffron yellow umbrella and a hooded maroon shirt. Somewhere, deep inside his guts, such optimism and drive was respectable. He'd heard the stories about Tomiko from his mom and he was impressed by them, she gave the full 100% and even a bit more than that.

"I'm telling you, that brat might be a bit over the top at times, but she's got potential like no one I've seen before. You oughta pick up the pace yourself if you don't want to eat her dust, which is more than likely."

Kasumi's words echoed through his head, and Mori could not resist a grin from creeping up to his face. Tomiko had such a rough start in life, yet look at her now. A fully fledged genin on her way to the title of Chunin, with an ambitious goal that might not be such a fever dream anymore. She managed to convince him of her dream and made him carry his own weight back in the academy, albeit with a little....external motivation. And carry his weight he would. If Tomiko would train with his mom, he'd train with his dad, simple as that. After all, surely the child of two jonin could survive any genin training, right?

Passing by multiple food stands, the Iwa genin chuckled at the naive thought he had not too long ago. His dad was a war veteran and earned the title of Jonin for a reason, of course he wouldn't ease up the gas. Mori had lost count of the attempts he made at water walking and rock climbing with just his feet, but the 'again' from his father rang clear in his ears. That, the bruises on his butt and the insane amount of laundry were a testament to the harsh training. He didn't learn any new cool jutsu, but his dad didn't think he'd need them.

"You've got a good head on your shoulders, boy. Use it well, it'd be a shame to lose it. Your chakra control is abyssmal though, the training you took will get you through the exams but it is not enough. When you return, you will continue your training, chunin or not. Because of that, I won't teach you the Dust Cover Jutsu and have you waste a lot of chakra because you don't know how much you exactly need and frankly, you don't need the jutsu. You've got your own version of it and you know it better than anyone. The remaining 90 minutes will be you finding out what I mean, now get to it."

Iwao wasn't wrong, his son did have a cheaper alternative. It took a while for him to find out, but eventually he did. As the rain pounded mercilessly on the umbrella, he was snapped brutally out of his musings by a loud voice. "Ah, so there is my destination. Thanks Tomiko." Mori chuckled as he made his way over to the examination building.

"Sweet Kami, is this the examination building or a flower shop?" The smell of flowers invaded his nose as he shook off the rain from his umbrella. Tomiko had already found some friends, how she did it was a mystery to him, probably because of her experience with making friends in the form of the gang. "Yo Tomiko, you didn't drown during your little speech? I heard you a block away." A teasing grin decorated his face as the umbrella rested on his shoulder. When he looked at the people she was talking to, he recognized them. Suna-nin, and if he wasn't mistaken and recalled the names correctly he heard back in the Land of Fire, they were Yasu and Madoka. There was a cross or something on Madoka's back, it was hard not to see it really, but the purpose of said cross was unknown to him. They weren't enemies yet though, so he might as well play it safe and friendly. "Hey there, it's been a while since Konoha huh? How've you two been?"

---------

The Chunin Exams, that one test you could never study enough for and Taji was a walking ball of nerves that were knotted together so tightly that she had no idea how to unravel the whole package. Thankfully Aisha's enthousiasm helped her ignore her own issues for a while. "What do you think the first test will be? Maybe it is a literal exam like at the Academy, or maybe you have to prove that you are capable enough to be Chunin. Then again, that's what this whole thing is." Letting out a sigh, the Kumo kunoichi adjusted a bow on her back to make sure the strung didn't cut into any flesh. During Kenji's training, she took it on herself to make sure they didn't starve. Sure, Luna and Sky were efficient hunters, but she felt like dead weight and hunting helped clear her mind from the situation she was in now. Having crafted a bow and arrows, she slowly but surely learned to hit most of her shots at small game. Her current bow was a professionally made bow with actual good string, not a string from her tanktop and a large branch she found. Her new bow was much better and allowed her arrows to go further with the same amount of power she used with her old bow, which caught her off guard the first time she used it. The longbow was by no means easy to carry around or use, but it worked for her. She even managed to create some new jutsu based around it, though she was far from perfecting them. "Luna and Sky should be allowed in potential matches by the way, they will probably be filed under ninken and ninken are considered ninja tools. Not quite sure if two fully grown wolves will be allowed, but one should be reasonable."

Just a title? Azumi would admit Sagiso's casual dismissal of the whole thing was a bit of a disappointment to her, to consider a reflection of growth & making that leap to a new level in your duty to one's own village as "a title" seemed to be a condescending attitude to take. But she held her tongue on that as she focused more on where Sagiso's eyes seemed to turn to the ever growing crowd of competitors who entered as Sagiso pointed out a girl with flaming red locks as she explained she was one of these "Stars" who had been here as it seems Sagiso came for this rumored grand meeting among nations and also for her village to make a showcase these exams.

The former Azumi had dwell over since she heard of it upon her return home, and much like the exams being held here she had...a number of conflicted feelings over it. The latter she could least see respect as it did tie into national pride which is meant to be promoted within these exams as she none the less was curious as she folded her arms over as she glanced Sagiso's way.

"I see, and if you were to give a gut feeling prediction on how these stars will do?" Azumi asked, while she mulled over whether she had a desire to go or rather would have been asked to come to this meeting but for now she wanted to focus on a topic she had more passion for. Or least what had been on deck right now as opposed to the future.

------
Flashback

"So, may I ask what this is about?" Azumi asked, having appeared almost out of the blue by Sagiso and Amari as it seemed the two worked to offer aid to the injured Oto-nin though while Azumi had no business in this matter the shock of Sagiso passed as curosity over why they had come took over.

So, she followed the pair and the wounded Tayuya, and now seemed to inquire about their situation and really why they tried to save the life of this Oto-nin or really what the context had been for her injuries to begin with.

----------
Kenji and Sakura, once they had a moment to catch up, prepared to head inside the exam hall themselves. Among the familiar and not so familiar faces who competed in the exams from the looks of it one Furijia had caught his attention; huh, seems she had come a long way from when he had last seen her.

Kenji had not had the time that, perhaps part of him, wished he did with the likes of Sagiso and her sister though perhaps he had a clean slate to expand his social circle. Though he still kept his eyes peeled, maybe she'd decide to enter this time as well...

-----
"If Luna and Sky were not allowed to compete, I wouldn't. I'd find another way to progress, but we do it together that is what it means to be part of a pack."

Aisha had grown to enjoy Taji's company, but even as she pointed out that there'd be no issue with legal requirements about the use of her wolf companions she replied matter of factly her stance even if that had not been the case. Luna & Sky seemed happy enough to hear the news though with Luna having barked happily as they wagged their tails as Aisha led them towards the exam room.

"How do you feel? I've seen you pick up some new skills in training, and felt you out with several spars. Think you got what it takes?" Aisha asked, as she herself had been rather proud of Taji's creativity and while Kenji endured the chakra shackles she worked when she could to aid in camp and spar with Taji in her spare time. Aisha felt Taji had what it took, but her belief in her mattered little it was whether Taji had confidence she could pass the trails of these exams.

----------
Come on you fool, why are you so shaky all the sudden. You showed guts to everyone just now so go talk to him!
"Uh, t-thanks, you look...fit as well..." Tomiko said, as she immediately cursed her weak reply to Yasu's compliment. Man something about this rain must have thrown off her usual confident flair as she tried to bounce back. Madoka had been given a hug so why not Yasu? Right just go an hug him, no problems there...nice and easy, just like a friend should do.

After what felt like five years and like negative two steps towards this, Tomiko eventually made her way towards Yasu. Not the energetic leap to Madoka, really a far cry from it, but she soon enough had gotten towards him and prepared to give the hug as she really desired to catch up with her old friend.

However, a new but familiar voice broke the scene as Tomiko glanced over and saw Mori who she had rather apparently left in the dust in her eager rush which caused a wave of guilt to wash over as she rubbed her head sheepishly though felt...comforted, that he had arrived all the same.

"Oh uh you heard that? Well I guess I wanted to be heard, and uh...sorry for leaving you behind. Guess I got a bit excited when I got here..." Tomiko offered in apology as Madoka saw Mori as she remembered him as one of the new pals Tomiko had picked up towards the end of their stay in Konoha. With a polite bow Madoka acknowledged Mori's comment before she replied in kind.

"A pleasure to see you as well Mori. Though I think we should head inside for this little reuinion. Don't want to stall proceedings." Madoka pointed out to the group.

"I see." Taji listened to Aisha talk about the meaning of a pack with awe. Ever since running away, she'd grown closer and closer to Kenji, Aisha, Luna and Sky to the point she didn't feel like a stranger intruding on their friendship, but that didn't mean all was well. She still struggled at times to let go and relax, the thought of disappointing her parents lingering around at all times, but her friends helped her a lot with dealing with that thought. They were close, but the tightness of a pack was something Taji desired to achieve. A group so close that they would stick together no matter what.

"I'm a bit nervous, as it is the Chunin Exams after all. My new skills will hopefully help, but it all really depends on the opponent and task at hand. If I can do things at my own pace, I should be able to get quite far alongside you, Kenji, Luna and Sky. How about you? I've seen and felt your strength first hand during the spars, but I can only assume that this won't be the same as our spars."

----------

"Don't worry your pretty little head about it, you're excited about the exams and I brought an umbrella. I can handle a bit of rain, at most I got a cold." Mori dismissed Tomiko's apology, sneaking in a joke about their height difference. "As for your bold exclamation, it is daring to say that given all the countries are together in Ame, but it isn't a bad thing per se. You've got a dream and a voice to make said dream known to the world, so why not use it? And don't take this the wrong way, but your appearance and bold way of announcing your presence doesn't exactly shout 'high level genin'. If anything, others that don't know you won't take you seriously and will get their butts kicked by you and personally, I'd love to see that." He flashed a wide grin at Tomiko to give her some confidence, not that she really needed it. She was the most confident person she knew, save for maybe his parents, but they kept their confidence under wraps at home.

Mori returned the bow to Madoka and nodded. "The feeling is mutual, and I agree. It won't be a good first impression if we're late after all. I've sworn off the ways of truancy of the past and Miss Tsuchikage here better keep a spotless track record." A smirk let everyone around know that the taunt was directed at Tomiko and that it wouldn't be the last taunt thrown at her. "How has Ame treated you two? I know that Iwa and Suna both are hot and lack a decent rhythm regarding rainfall for differemt reasons, but the jump from desert to rainy city must be quite a big one. Personally, I don't mind it too much, but I'd miss the sun pretty soon even if the sun usually gets too hot to bare around midday." He asked Madoka and Yasu in an attempt to make small talk and lift the tensions between the two nations. He was no stranger to those, as his parents made sure that he knew what was going on in the world before setting out to avoid saying something that could result in bruises at other locations than his butt.

Seiun
Although B.O.S.E.C's voice was resonating in his ears, Seiun could hardly hear it since the palpitations of his heart had drowned out all other sound in the world. At long last, the rogue shinobi had returned to the Yasei Residence, but instead of a form of excitement or glee, the only emotion that the former Ame-nin felt was dread.

"Well, the obvious next course of action would be to knock on the door..." Seiun attempted to feign confidence, but his tone betrayed him and revealed his nerves. As he went to get himself noticed, memories from his childhood flooded into his mind.

Seiun(Flashback): 8 years ago
The young boy woke up and immediately turned to his desk to observe his plans for the day. Unlike a normal kid who planned on making time to hang out with friends or spend time with his family, Seiun was devising a scheme to kill his mother and father. Recently, he had come into possession of a lethal, slow acting poison(which had a label denoting it as such in order to prevent confusion with other clear liquids such as water) thanks to the “negligence” of one of the workers his parents had hired. The plan was simple: he would request to shadow the chefs while they work. Once his request goes through, he would then ask the chefs if he could attempt to imitate their meal by making a serving for himself. At the earliest opportunity, he would implant the poison within the chef’s serving of the meal, and then continue to imitate the meal to its completion, keeping his own serving away from his parents. Once his parents had returned from their mission and it was time for dinner, the poisoned meal would be served to them while he got to enjoy a nice meal. When the poison kicks in, he can then frame the poor sap that served them the meal, but he would need to improvise an escape route in the event that he got exposed. Despite that, the Ame-nin was quite satisfied with the plan he had put together, and he felt confident in putting into action today.

“Seiun!” Lady Yasei yelled from downstairs, causing her son to exit his room and stand at the top of the steps to hear his mother better, “Your lessons are about to begin, make sure that you don’t make your instructors wait too long,” As the boy descended downstairs, he noticed that his father, Lord Yasei, was absent.

“Where’s father?” The boy inquired to his mother, not knowing why his dad would be out at such an early hour.

“Dealing with politics and other things I couldn’t be bothered to care for,” Her tone was blasé, as if she was just doing the bare minimum to get the child out of her hair, “Now attend your lessons young man, I don’t want to repeat myself again,” With this being said, the boy nodded and proceeded to the training room for his daily instruction. At this point, Seiun's interest in his own instruction had dwindled significantly since Zheng was fired by Hueici and his replacement shared none of the qualities that Zheng used to make the process of learning ninjutsu fun. Taijutsu wasn't too bad, but there was only so much a prepubescent boy could do in terms of hand to hand combat, a fact that was considered in his evaluations. Genjutsu was a complete waste of time in Seiun's eyes since he ultimately couldn't make sense of anything his instructors were saying, which was reflected in his evaluations. However, the one session of instruction that he was fond of was Bukijutsu, mainly because his instructor allowed him to practice Kenjutsu. Despite this, the day still seemed to breeze by until about 5:00, when both of Seiun’s parents had announced their departure for their mission and the chefs were beginning to prepare dinner.

Now to put the plan into action.

“Mother, Father, would you be okay if I observed the chefs’ work?” Once he noticed that his parents were giving him an unusual look in response to his unusual request, but all the boy gave in response was a simple smile, causing his parents to shrug after the fact.

“Very well boy, although I couldn’t imagine what you’d gain out of it.” Lord Yasei replied as he turned to leave along with his wife, “We shall return soon, don’t break anything while we’re gone.” As he gave a loveless warning to his youngest son, the Lord and Lady of the Noble Yasei Clan had made their departure, unaware of the conspiracy against them.

"Perfect…." Seiun chuckled in a low voice as he travelled to the kitchen. As expected, the chefs were hard at work with preparing tonight's dinner. Unfortunately, he realized that the kitchen workers’ process was too difficult to replicate himself, and there didn’t seem to be an opening to slip the poison in the meal any time soon.

Need to come up with a backup plan...I got it! I’ll offer to pour them drinks, allowing me to poison them that way! Perfect!

3 hours after the couple's departure, the chefs had finished up their dinner preparations, and the return of Hueici and Sumire had been announced. This prompted Seiun to arrive with the intention of greeting his parents. As the two entered the mansion, it was apparent that the mission they returned from was a dangerous one. Although the duo had been battle-scarred and bandaged, the two seemed to have a renewed sense of life.

“Welcome back, Mother and Father,” Seiun greeted with a superficial cheer in his voice, “Your mission was successful, I presume?”

“We didn’t succeed in every area, but we accomplished the majority of our goals, my boy,” There was a renewed, uncharacteristic sense of vigor in Hueici’s voice, which didn’t go unnoticed by his son.

“My boy”... he rarely calls me that...but that won’t save him from proper retribution.

“Dinner has been prepared in your absence, let me escort you two.” Seiun offered his exhausted parents, unintentionally causing them to chuckle.

“We appreciate the offer dear, but we can get to the tables ourselves just fine,” Similarly to her husband, her tone had shifted to a much kinder and more motherly tone than her son was used to. Once the family sat at the table and began to eat for a bit, Seiun decided that it was time to put his plan into action.

“I’m getting myself a drink, would you two like anything?” The boy offered, but soon found himself shut down.

“There’s no need to exert yourself for our sake, darling.” Sumire chuckled as she responded to her son, unknowingly enraging him.

Keep your cool, you can find a way through this.

“I understand, but I wanted to do something for you two since you worked so hard today…” As a desperate measure, the boy turned on his childlike cuteness factor, which was thankfully enough to sway his exhausted parents.

“If you insist, my boy. My wife and I will take any wine that you serve in the second shelf of the wine cabinet,” Lord Yasei was playfully resigned in tone as he responded to his son, “Torinosuke, assist my son in locating the wine cabinet, if you will.” The hired hand nodded as he escorted Seiun to the wine cabinet, much to the boy's hidden frustration.

Why must I encounter an interference at every turn?! Still, I must keep composure if I am to succeed…

It didn't take long for the duo to reach their destination, prompting Seiun to take a chance to secure his plans success.

"Thank you, Mr. Torinosuke. I no longer require your assistance." The young boy bowed respectfully to the elder man, prompting him to leave satisfied that he helped his Lord's son. Taking a sigh of relief, Seiun opened the cabinet, grabbed the nearest bottle along with two wine glasses, and poured the wine followed by the poison. Aside from being colorless, the poison was also odorless and tasteless, ensuring that its presence wouldn't alarm the consumer. Once both glasses were prepared, Seiun delivered them back to his parents, along with a glass of water for himself since he was legitimately thirsty.

“How generous of you,” Hueici thanked his son for the beverage, inhaling deeply with exhaustion over the day’s events, “Do you want to know something, my boy?”

“Sure, feel free to share, Father.” Although the boy was unsure what Lord Yasei was on about, he figured that it couldn’t hurt to hear what his father had to say.

“Today, our mission was to assassinate an enemy of the village and although we knew it’d be guarded, we didn’t expect the enemies’ facility to be as guarded as it was. Your mother and I had fought off the guards, but the target got away and we nearly lost our lives on that mission. During the healing process, I gained a new perspective: when I die, I want to make sure that my children ensure the good name of the Yasei Noble Clan. I’ve always wanted that, but I realize that in my efforts I’ve alienated both you and your sister by comparing you both to your brother. It wasn’t right of me.” To his son’s surprise, Hueici brought up the flaws in his character and apologized for his mistakes, “I brought this up with your mother and she too came to a similar conclusion. Therefore, my boy, I have but one request for you: I ask not that you forgive us of our past behavior, but I request that you give your mother and I the opportunity to make it right.” The boy had been rendered speechless, a small “lump” forming as a result of his guilt. The very guilt that formed a lump in his throat had also paralyzed him, rendering him unable to speak out against the conspiracy that he plotted. All he could muster was a simple nod, though it was weak, he made every effort to conceal that fact.

“I’m thankful for your grace, my boy. Let today serve as a turning point in our family dynamic,” Lord Yasei declared with delight, “And let’s commemorate this event with a toast.” Hueici and Sumire picked up their glasses of wine while their son reluctantly picked up his glass of water to toast of the upcoming change, albeit not the change that Seiun’s parents expected. The boy watched as his mother and father consumed the poisoned wine, causing the “lump” in his throat growing larger despite his best efforts to down it with his drink. Eventually, the poison had kicked in: the parents began to cough violently, eventually hacking out blood, and fear began to fill their eyes when the realization that their deaths were imminent had dawned on them. The two turned to their son and soon pieced together the conspiracy that had been planned, causing the anger induced by betrayal to mix with the fear induced by their impending deaths.

“Seiun...y-you....” Despite his best efforts, Hueici ultimately couldn’t form a complete sentence, coughing between the words that managed to escape his mouth. Although he wanted to run, Seiun was paralyzed by fear, unable to avert his gaze from his parents’ suffering.

“Ironic...that I perish not by Jonin guards....but by my own son…” Unlike her husband, Sumire was able to utter a sentence before she passed away. Hueici had died soon after, leaving Seiun without parents and the Yasei Noble Clan without a Lord or a Lady. Unfortunately for the young boy, one of the hired hands had heard Sumire’s dying words.

“Men! Lady Sumire and Lord Hueici have been slain by Seiun!” The hired hand cried to his coworkers, some of which arrived immediately and others took their time to arrive, “We must apprehend this traitor!” Immediately after this declaration, the recently-declared traitor’s fight-or-flight instinct took over, specifically the latter option. At first, Seiun opted to run for the front exit, but it was blocked off by a few of his apprehenders, forcing him to consider another exit. Although he began to run in the opposite direction, he had no plan of escape. Unbeknownst to him as he was scrambling around the house, one of the hired hands had called for shinobi to assist them in detaining the perpetrator.

If the front exit is blocked off, then there’s a good chance that the back exit is blocked as well, and I can’t take the chance to check.

Eventually, Seiun realized that he was fresh out of options, as he found himself running aimlessly in any way that he thought would allow him to avoid capture from his parents’ hired hands. He eventually found a wall to hide behind, allowing himself to collect his thoughts to come up with anything that he could use to improve his chances of survival.

...I’ve got it! I can transform myself into a rat! The people my parents hired don’t know much about it, so I should be able to get away with it. I haven’t practiced transformation jutsu very much, but I have no other choice…

Taking a moment to recall the hand-seals that were used for the technique, the boy soon went through the motions of recreating the Dog, Boar and Ram seals slowly and deliberately, as to avoid making any mistakes that would cause him to botch the jutsu. After a few attempts, the self-made orphan successfully transformed his appearance to that of a rather deformed black rat.

Alright, now that I’m transformed, I just have to walk around and hope they dispose of me.

Once he left his hiding spot, he looked for one of the formerly hired hands who was on patrol in hopes of locating him. Fortunately for Seiun, it didn’t take long for him to get noticed by the man he was pursuing.

“Ugh, a rat... I think...” The man groaned in disgust as he unknowingly picked up the very boy he was looking for, “I don’t care what it is, I’m getting rid of this thing immediately.” Although everything seemed to be going according to plan for the boy, he knew that he wasn’t out of the woods yet. However, as Seiun predicted, none of the man’s coworkers suspected much of anything when they were told that the man was getting rid of a deformed rat, nor did any of the man’s coworkers think to stop him since they were looking for the murderer of the Yasei Noble Clan’s head. Therefore, Seiun had successfully been thrown out of his house, making his next move clear as day.

I need to get out of here...

*Seiun’s Flashback*

I need to get out of here...

outside of Seiun’s house, the rain poured on the dimly lit night, the eve of a tragic familicide. I’m a dark alleyway...something looked at the rat formed Seiun...it’s eyes glowing yellow. The ghastly creature began to glitch up the memory that Seiun was reminiscing off, the rain lagging and breaking and the alleyway coming apart at the seams.

The Chunnin exams, one of the most anticipated event in the world of ninjas. Those who entered this exam have the hopes that they will be able to climb beyond their Gennin status and be promoted to a Chunnin. However, the Chunnin exams are notoriously difficult with a high chance of death, most people would feel the immense amount of pressure on them by taking part in it... most people. Shiho wasn’t most people.

Cheerfully skipping around the land of rain on her way to participate in the Chunnin exams was none other than the aforementioned girl Shiho, following along was her brother, Shura. Shiho pranced as if she didn’t have a care in the world, a fact her brother is somewhat miffed by considering where they were headed.

“Can you at least act like you’re taking this seriously? You’re entering a really big event you know.” Shura expressed.

“Oh it’ll be fine, what’s the point in stressing about the exams before it has even started? Feels like a waste of energy to me.” Shiho replied as they arrived at the entrance to the exams. Shura turned around.

“Well I’ll be headed off now. I hope you’ll be able to make it through.”

“Relax bro, I got this.” With that said, Shiho walked forward.

Shura let out a sigh before letting a small smile show on his lips. “I’m sure you do.” He mumbled to himself as he walked off as well.

It was a new day at the Ikeda Mansion, and there were many questions to be answered.
Deep within the Clan Heads private chambers, Ichiko, Kido and
Sūkikyō pondered where exactly they should go from here.

“I mean, abolishing multiple of the pre-existing rules placed by Lord Shinku is a given. But changing our ways won’t prevent the Denki clan from holding pursuing us.”

Sūkikyō was pacing back and forth as she spoke, using a book and quill to summarize the cliff notes of their ramblings.

“Whats more, when it comes to my clan...negotiations are unlikely, if not impossible. We’ll just have to fight.”

Kido added from a dark corner at the back of the room.

“No! Lord Shinku was overthrown for this exact reason. We’ve gotta come up with another approach.”

Sūkikyō countered with fire in her eyes, only for her argument to be drowned out by the voice of Ichiko.

“We still don’t have the kids...”

The burgundy-haired Shinobi muttered whilst sitting back on Lord Shinku’s throne, the ruby-red gems previously used by him now wrapped tightly around Ichiko’s shins.
It was apparent that Ichiko hadn’t been apart of the conversation in the slightest. She was still focused on the original goal at hand.

“We obtained access to the globe. You saw that both Rittsu and Katsuo’s signals were strong and normal. We know that they’re safe, whatever they may be doing...”

Kido’s voice lingered on his last word. In truth, he knew Katsuo was going to be fine in all likelihood, but Rittsu...she was another story. But there was no time to worry, they had more pressing matters to attend to.

“...besides, if we managed to remove the Denki clan from the equation altogether, it would make our finding Katsuo and Rittsu a whole lot easier.”

The ashy-haired Shinobi added while slowly approaching his wife, a small smile on his face.

“We’ll get through this...”

“...I know.”

Sūkikyō quickly interjected into the heart-warming moment, feeling somewhat awkward as the lone one out in the room.

“Anywho...first things first. Shinku’s body has been prepared for the ritual. We should go get it over with.”

——

Upon arriving to the Chunin Exams, Katsuo couldn’t help but feel a certain level of nostalgia. He could feel the room around him, and it was all too familiar.

“Right, you go ahead and add your name to the ballot. I’ll look for a seat and see if I can spot Sagiso while I’m at it.”

And with that, the stormy-haired boy waved his off, before disappearing into the ever-growing crowd.
In truth, Katsuo had noticed Sagiso’s presence the moment she’d entered the room. The young Traveler-Nin had been feeling out the area with his chakra, and couldn’t help but notice some familiar individuals he felt the need to pay visit...

———

Rittsu pondered the snakes words for a moment, not certain is he was literal or not.

“...I suppose, yeah...”

Amari watched as Katsuo ran ahead. If she hadn't gotten to know him over these past few months, she would be worried about the fact that he wanted to go find Sagisō, but he knew he was just excited to watch the exams with so many strong competitors. Amari made her way through the crowd, seeing many familiar faces as well as a few, not so familiar ones. She was excited to see a lot of their strengths and weaknesses, and see how she faired after her recent training. She got through the crowd and signed up for the exams.

Amari: Flashback

Amari was pleased to hear Tayuya would be alright. She didn't know the Oto-nin well, but that didn't mean she wasn't at least concerned about her. After all, she seemed to be friends with Sagisō, which was enough for Amari. Amari's attention was once again turned to the girl Baiyan brought called Azumi. Azumi was obviously acquainted with Sagisō based on the way the two seemed to interact with each other. She seemed confused about the situation so Amri thought this was a good time for an introduction.

"What this is about? We had an injured friend and we brought her here to be healed by one of our sisters. That's really all there is to it. I'm Amari, a Nadeshiko Virago. You've obviously already been acquainted with my sister's here. Nice to meet you." Amari thought she would start off friendly with Azumi. She was still overwhelmed by all the new faces, but she didn't want to let that show too much.

Sema glanced back up from the ground and gave Akuenba a genuine smile. She took his hand and instead of shaking it she took it and started leading him to the the registration counter, obviously not forcefully though.

Hmm... have I heard his name before somewhere? Probably just a coincidence or something.

Sema perished the thought and continued walking over the to the registration counter and talked to the person there.

"Please register for Sema Hakiro and Akuenba... what's your last name?" she asked looking at Aku.

Sagisō

The Skillful Star shook her head, pursed her lips into a line, and declined to comment. After a few moments of silence, Sagisō shifted on her feet; and, slowly licking her lips, she reneged and began to speak.

"If they went all out..." She regarded the crowd critically, dissecting them at a glance: the way they moved and acted, betraying a certain prowess.

"Top sixteen, maybe quarterfinalist; but, that's not what we're here for."

The exams held little value to the Viragos, its intent lost on the Amazonian sisterhood; after all, they possessed their own ranking system and didn't have clients or other nations to impress with their prowess. Much like Sagisō's participation six months ago, the extent of her sister's showings would depend on their own personal motivations.

And speaking of personal motivations...

"If you don't mind, I have another reason for coming here. I want to learn Water Release; and, what better teacher than the illustrious winner of last year's Chūnin Exams~"

Through her teasing tone sounded flecks of sincerity and fervor danced behind her heated gaze. The whimsical girl had seemingly come to an intractable decision or a good excuse to pick a fight...

Sagisō ~ 3 months before the exams

"I could ask (you) the same, Azumi."

Whirling in her chair, Sagisō faced the Ame-shinobi and her friend of three-months. She hadn't heard word nor whit of Azumi's exploits since they parted at the Chūnin exams and the last place she'd expected to see her was here. Their reunion, however, was caught between hectic times; and, Sagisō idly chewed on her cheek, thinking of ways to explain. Amari had already started, but Sagisō decided to let her friend in on a bit more.

"You've looked around, right? Did you notice that all the Nadeshiko around were adults?"

While that might've been the norm in a shinobi village where older and younger generations co-existed, this was not the same for Nadeshiko and Sagisō swiftly explained that: the Nadeshiko were a group, never more than a-hundred-and-eight; a peculiar custom they had held for three generations in reverence to their predecessors. To maintain this particular number the Nadeshiko did not integrate cross-generationally. The very first Nadeshiko formed the first generation and their daughters and successors, upon separating from them and becoming independent, formed the second generation. Following that trend, the daughters and successors of the second generation would become the third generation and likewise part ways with their mothers and mentors.

After Sagisō's explanation, it would be easy for someone of Azumi's intellect to connect the clues. Sagisō, being significantly younger than the women around, was naturally a member of a lower generation.

"You've caught us right before succession: its a ceremony we have to pass down titles and techniques to the new group of Nadeshiko. The rest of our sisters will be here soon; but, we're a bit...short on numbers."

A sense of gloom clouded her expression as she finished but by that time the tavern maid had returned with her food and her expression lifted at the delicate platter of sandwiches.

"I brought her back to see if she would be able to join us."

Yasu

Yasu had wanted to say more, but Mori's arrival, as well as Tomiko's own suggestion for them to get moving, caused his words to falter on his tongue. The Suna nin heaved a sigh under his breath and then, upon hearing Mori's small talk, merely shrugged.

"It's so-so."

Everyone flocked into the main room, each ninja looking willing to do what it took to win these exams. Mist, Leaf, Cloud, affiliation didn’t matter. They were all on their own. As the candidates took their seats, booming sound was heard.

“...So. The new blood has arrived...”

Suddenly, green fluid began to trickle down from above, landing and forming a puddle In the front of the room. From the green puddle, a figure emerged. They were masculine, wrapped in a large black raincoat that covered their entire body outside their head, which was obscured by a thick dark grey mask. The mask had tuning coming from it, green bioluminescent fluid pumping through them.

“...I am Boxide. Your instructor.” He spoke in his garbled voice. “Your Examinations will now commence...”

Suddenly, the front of the room appeared to simply fade away, being just a genjustu! Instead, the room was much longer than originally anticipated. There were many corridors, each blocked by a door.

“...As I’m sure your aware if you have first grade level math skills...there is a door for each of you.” He gurgled. “You will face a gauntlet of challenges. Each one tougher than the last. Report to your doors immediately.”

......

Kai watched Boxide clear off the Genjustu, inviting them to their doors. It appeared similar to the last exam in how it was styled, separated corridors. Did they directly rip off the leaf’s idea? If that was the case, he knew exactly how to answer these tests.

Giving a supporting nod to Tsuki, he approached a door, giving it a push and walking inside. Inside the first room appeared to be a clone of Boxide, dripping with green fluid that his mask secreted. A water clone no doubt. He stood next to a single sheet of paper with a pencil directly next to it. This was...not the same.

“...Your first test is simple...” Boxide’s clone spoke. “...Write down the Chemical Formula for sulfuric Acid. Science is the backbone for all modern achievements. A ninja is not only power...but of knowledge.

.......

“GRAH! YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN YOU WITCH!”

Reaver shouted, stomping on the ground and raising a robotic fist to her. He had no patience for playing coy, especially not on such a inject matter. Looking off to the side and then back to her, Reaver’s frame shifting back a bit.

“You were present for something you shouldn’t have. No. SOMEONE you shouldn’t have.”

he tightened his steel grasp, growling in his deep voice as he did so. He felt exposed and unearthed, having that person exposed to the world like he was before...never again.

“Michi...the only target I’ll never be able to slay with my weapons. That trip to your little village WAS NOT WHAT A WARRIOR’S FORM SHOULD APPEAR!!”

......

Orochimaru chuckled, tracing a hand around her chin. “Hehehe...good. In order to become stronger and surpass your limits is to go to the depths of hell and come back alive. Rittsu, I want you to become a demon.”

He tilted her head up by her chin to look into his piercing serpentine eyes. The elder sannin had certain malicious intent.

Koki'o

"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"

A surge of chakra, a torrent of scarlet flames, a trail of smoke and destruction.

Koki'o wiped her lips with her thumb, watching curiously as her fireball approached the door. The Crying Star's crimson features gleamed in the torchlight. She had suppressed her shock at the genjutsu that had managed to envelop the whole room without their notice, but that small facet had already put her on guard. She had heard from Sagisō that these people from the Hidden Villages became savages during the exams, frothing at the mouths to gain but a chance at becoming chūnin, disregarding life and well-being for reasons she couldn't even begin to fathom. Those weren't Sagisō's exact words but that was the gist Koki'o had gotten.

With that in mind, the twin-tailed Scorpion had no plans to lose life or limb and was naturally, not going to walk into a suspicious room just because a man, one who had all had them under genjutsu just moments prior, had said so.

“...”

Boxide watched as Koki’o attacked the door in a flash of fire. As it burnt down and fell apart, the corridor remained seemingly intact. He looked to her as if she had cursed at her own grandmother.

“...You do that again and you are banned from taking the Chuunin exams. Understood?” He gurgled. “Walk inside if you want to participate, and leave if you don’t. Do neither and I’ll send you home in pieces...”

Koki'o

She scoffed at the 'proctor's' words moving further away from him. She was wary of his threats, but that didn't mean she was going to be bullied into dancing to his tune. She took neither option one or option two; instead, she moved to inspect the corridors. It was apparently unphased by her fireball and that was concerning to the Crying Star.

If the walls were so sturdy, wouldn't she be trapped the moment she went inside? She glanced around the room, watching other participants who entered without a second thought: freely giving up all control of the situation and stepping into cages they could not escape. She'd heard from Sagisō that the last exam's test involved seeing through deception; but, she had also heard that the examiners in the leaf had intentionally subjected the examinees to environments capable of killing them, namely the Leaf's Forest of Death.

Call her paranoid, but the crying star was quite skeptical already. She had wanted to feel out what was behind the door with her attack, but only the door had faltered. She certainly had no plans to recklessly step into the unknown and so, she turned to face the gurgle-voided proctor.

"What's down there? Surely you don't expect me to walk into a cage of my own volition?"

Shen: King of Digimon

Previously Shen: King of the Mist
The Proctor made a low but noticeable groan, a bit of the ooze escaping from his mask and dropping messily on the ground. This one was going to be a nuisance.

“...Actually, I expect you to do just that. That’s how an exam works... If you have a problem with that, you can leave. Saves me the time and energy...”

Purposely not answering what was down there, he just gave a deep sickly moan, before breathing in more of the green fluid.

Koki'o

The crying star was taken back, but after a moment's thought, she nodded absent-mindedly.

"And if we die down there it would be our own impotence," She mumbled just loud enough for her voice to carry across the room, "that's understandable."

Satisfied that she had given the other participants something to think about, Koki'o returned to her own inspection of the corridors.

The proctor had confirmed her suspicions that the corridor would not allow them to easily 'escape' the exam. The crying star was unsure if that suggested some level of danger existed at the end, or if it was merely examination protocol. Either way, she held the assumption that all portions of the exam held some inherent danger and with that in mind, it would be the duty of the participants to figure out what was.

Since that was the case, the Crying Star ultimately decided to take matters into her own hands. If the corridor truly held some danger, then she'd suss it out with her next technique and, if it was perfectly safe and their 'cage-like' set-up was just to unnerve the participants, then that too would be revealed. Either way, she was determined to launch another attack, and if the proctor wanted to ban her from the exams...it was no sweat off her back.

Koki'o threw a glance towards Amari, silent, and unnoticed. The Solitary Star would be able to draw the same conclusions as she had so her elimination was a small price to pay to secure her sister's passage and to have passed her useful information.

Shuffling over to the corridor, Koki'o drew a deep breath and—

"!!!!!"

A deafening wail was channeled down the corridor, contained and amplified by its sturdy walls. The Crying Technique was a specialty of the Crying Star and its powerful soundwaves were useful not only as an attack but also as a means of scouting.

Shen: King of Digimon

Previously Shen: King of the Mist
The sound wave shot into the hall, pinging around it. It appeared there was only a clone of him inside alongside a piece of paper and writing utensil. But On the far end of the hall...the sound wave bumped into something. Another wall, one that separated this segment from the other, with a similar door on it.

“...Very well. You are taking the exam...”

just then, the man had erected earth walls around her, boxing her in to the open hallway. The walls had come from the ground, completely covering her sides, over and under her, only leaving the opening ahead toward the exam proper. This effectively forced her to take the exam.

The Crying Star was stunned. Rather than disqualify her, the proctor was now trying to force her to take the exams. What the hell was down that hallway that required them to go so far? It should've been neither here nor there whether one person was disqualified from the examinations but it seemed like something more was at play...

Eyes narrowing dangerously, the Nadeshiko wrapped her knuckled against her earthen enclosure.

"Can't bust out," She muttered, "that leaves forward..."

Pressing her two thumbs to her lips, she punctured the skin and began to weave hand-seals. Slamming her hands across opposite ends of the enclosure, two webs of sealing script erupted as she performed the summoning jutsu.

When the smoke cleared Koki'o(?) was seated cross-legged on the back of a giant scorpion. She hopped off and then, tapping repeatedly against the scorpion's carapace, conveyed to it some hidden message. When she had finished, the girl(?) wordlessly walked down the hallway and unnaturally neutral expression on her face and her teeth chittering together with an odd warble of— "Tktktktktkt~"

The clone of Boxide waited for her in the halls, looking down at her scorpion and then back up at her. He gestured toward the paper in the room.

“...So...if you are finally willing to take the take the exam...here. Write down the Chemical Formula for Sulfuric Acid. And since you seem to have such a difficulty doing things normally...you won’t mind doing it this way...”

He move a previously concealed sleeve over and took the writing utensil away from her, hiding it in his form that dripped in green fluid. He then looked back to her, only his heavy breathing as a response.

“...Now begin.”

Silent and with an unchanging expression the 'girl' brought a finger-nail towards the paper. She waited for several moments, her scorpion, still at the entrance, beginning to get feisty as it snapped its claws together and stomped around a bit. After shooting it a glance, it calmed down and, by secreting some kind of fluid from her fingertip, the girl began to scribble on the paper.

Whatever the fluid she was excreting was, it appeared rather corrosive. Unless the paper was treated with some special method, it appeared that her answer would burn right through the paper, rendering it unreadable.

Boxide looked on, not interfering in what the nadeshiko girl was doing, which was corroding the paper with her writing. He just loomed over her as she put pressure on the paper at the desk, ignoring the thrashing scorpion.

“...Just note any consequences that may occur upon the destruction of said paper...”

*SHRED!*

the paper fell apart, the proctor staring blankly at it. He then looked back at the real Koki‘o waiting in the back of the room. With a gurgling sigh, he gestured to the next room, seeming to make a mental note about the result of this particular stage of the exam.

As she entered the second room, she was greeted with the sight of yet another water clone of Boxide’s, this time, amongst an entire field of small chest boxes, at least 30. The boxes were small and brown, with golden edges around them and a tiny keyhole in the center. He gestured to the boxes around him with movements of his head.

“...You see before you...the next door can only be opened through a key. There is one key in this room...however, you cannot open a chest with your own body in order to make it through. Unless the chest happens to be the correct one of course. You may only open one. If you open the wrong chest yourself...you will instantly be eliminated...”

Cocking his head at the scuttering form before him, he had many words that could he said about it. However, none of these words would be vocalized nor pertinent to the situation at hand.

"Tktktktktk~"

While staring at the boxes Koki'o(?) appeared to seriously contemplate her choices. The examiner's wording was strange, and the criteria of the test even stranger. She couldn't open any of the chests with her...body unless they were the right chest. This was rather odd as evidently the girl had no way of opening the chest with her body unless this was a very round-about way of saying the chests were unlocked and she could only open one of them.

Evidently this Jonin proctor was nothing good, he even seemed to suggest that she sell her body to him so she could obtain the key to the next phase of the test. Unfortunately, his chest would not be the chest she opened with her body.

Instead, the girl seemed to stand in deep contemplation for several moments and then, taking a few good whiffs of the air, made a decision. She ignored all the chests and instead performed a transformation jutsu, becoming a small scorpion that swiftly attempted to crawl through the keyhole.

Hyōryugetsu

The Hōzuki stayed back a moment to observe the interaction between the highly suspicious girl and the proctor. She, to an extent, agreed with the girl's caution but from her actions, Hyō had sussed out a few things. The corridors were secure but evidently not airtight and so the Hōzuki suspected that if things went south she would still be able to slip out of harm's way.

So without further ado, Hyō slipped into the test room and was met by the first test. It was...odd that they would subtly throw in chemistry here and the Hōzuki was vigilant for any other tricks to the exam. After writing down her answer with the utensils provided, the Hōzuki turned to the proctor quizzically.

Hyo’s Test

“Hm...” Boxide glanced over to the hozuki, who displayed their answer before him. “Very good indeed. You may proceed to the next door.”

gesturing to the second stage of the exam, the proctor could be heard lightly wheezing under his mask.

......

Kai’s Test

“A Chemical formula? Ha! I know it like the back of my hand.” Kai said confidently, scribbling his answer on the paper. “We Hunter-Nin specialize in this type of query! We use these chemical compounds every day!”

“...A boastful one...” Boxide muttered, mildly annoyed. “But...no less correct. Proceed with caution...”

the clone dissipated, allowing Kai access to the next room, which he moved into with a strut, confident in his chances-

“...Behold, a horde of chests.”

“Wha-?”

......

Koki’o‘s Test

As the clicking Koki’o moved through the Keyhole, she was met with a small and blank room, two doors before her. The proctor stood between these doors, breathing heavily.

“...Welcome to the final stage of the exam...” he spoke. “This next challenge has a 5% pass rate, and is considered the hardest stage of the exam.”

he gestured toward the door on his right, which one could tell there were flashing lights on the other side, orange and reds, and heat being thrown off of it.

“Due to legal constraints, you may also choose our alternative test, which is much longer than the difficult test, but is notably easier...”

he gestured to the left, which revealed nothing under it, other than just dark space.

“...Go ahead...“

Eventually, the moment that all the attendants had been waiting for had come: the exams were about to begin. However, before he entered the exam room proper, he noticed a girl who was...less than willing to play along with the exams. Seeing as he had no incentive to immediately proceed into the exam room, Taiyo figured that he could stick around to observe how this scenario would play out. However, hearing the threat of “Walk inside if you want to participate, and leave if you don’t. Do neither and I’ll send you home in pieces...” was enough to convince the fiery shinobi to begin, even though he wasn't even the target of the threat. Although the FBS master had no idea what to expect from the first exam, he certainly didn't expect a lone desk sporting only a pencil and paper. Moreover, he didn't expect to be forced to write down the chemical formula for sulfuric acid.

What kind of bullshit it this?! "A ninja is not only power...but of knowledge." my ass! How the fuck does this information help any shinobi?

Complaining will get me nowhere. I just need to answer the question, plain and simple.

Taking a moment to recollect any information he learned on the subject, Taiyo eventually wrote down the answer that he was most comfortable with and handed it to the instructor.
That's one down, lets see what's next...
Tsuki
As the Chunin exams was about to begin, the Yuki-nin couldn't help but feel nervous about the upcoming trials. However, a reassuring nod from her friend was all that she needed to enter the exam room. To her surprise, she found a desk with a pencil and paper and found herself being asked to recite the chemical makeup of sulfuric acid.

"I wasn't expecting such an easy first exam, but I'm not complaining!" On account of her friendless childhood, Tsuki found herself completely devoted to her academic studies, since it was the only other thing that school had to offer besides social interaction. Therefore, she was able to recite the formula with ease. Not only did she write down H2SO4, but she also put in the effort to explain what it meant: 2 molecules of hydrogen, one molecule of sulfur, and four molecules of oxygen. Once she had finished writing the acronym and its explanation, she handed it to the instructor with a satisfied grin on her face.

If the exams are going to stay this easy, then I might have a chance after all...

Koki'o

The heat and light emitting from the room of danger were rather pleasant attractions to the fire-release user, who, despite her unnaturally neutral expression seemed to shiver with pleasure. Without even a moment's hesitation Koki'o(?) selected the dangerous room.

Hyōryugetsu

The first test was odd but the second test had managed to best it. It was...an even more interesting challenge to be faced with over thirty boxes and apparently only one correct answer. However, after mulling over the proctor's words the Hōzuki concluded that he had said nothing about opening the door with her body; all she needed was a key, right?

Thus it was that the Hōzuki swept over the boxes and promptly stuck her finger through the door's hole, her liquid body molding to the shape of the key and then holding its shape by increasing the water tension. With a 'key' now acquired, the Hōzuki turned the lock, expecting the door to open and reveal to her the next stage of the exam.

Taiyo’s Exam.

Boxide looked down at the Paper that Taiyo had given him. He stared intently at the somewhat legible handwriting for what seemed like forever.

the clone vanished as the next room appeared to unlock itself, allowing access to the next portion of the test.

“...All you Mist Ninja are total nerds...”

Nothing else to be said, he just dissolved into a green puddle before her, not even so much as an instruction as the next room opened itself up for her, inviting her in.

Hyo’s exam

the Proctor nodded his head as Hyo unlocked the door using her own body, seemingly pleasantly surprised by this action. With a gesture to move on, he lost shape, becoming a green puddle, allowing the door to swing open. On the other side, it revealed Boxide, in the center of two doors.

“Due to legal constraints, you may also choose our alternative test, which is much longer than the difficult test, but is notably easier...”

.......

As the Kokio(?) Chose the first room...the door freaked and the heat grew hotter and hotter, the coloring redder and redder before-

*Pffffff!*

Confetti had been released on the other side, several heaters and red lamps on display, feigning the idea of danger. There was an exit door right behind this that lead to the outside. A final Boxide clone was at the end, giving a congested laugh.

“...Ha...good...you have passed... You know why, don’t you...? Your answers to the first exam mean nothing...your second exam? Easy if you were any self respecting ninja. But this one? ...A true ninja never fears the odds or danger ahead. We fight on no matter what’s before us. Well done...you pass...”

“...”

“...And Koki’o, you are eliminated...

So just pick a door and wait for what was to come on the other side? Seemed simple enough from Tomiko's POV but before she even had a chance to take a step another of the contestants took aim with a fireball as one of the contestants, the star, seemed to go on a tirade about going to the door as she questioned the point of it till her hand had eventually been forced and she was made to take it. With others following suit as Madoka felt a sigh.

Can't say I blame her as deception is name of the game. But it seems there is no dancing around this...

True to her nature, Tomiko was the first among their group to step forward as she picked a door and Madoka worked to pick one out of her own. Both had a confidence, Tomiko's more open while Madoka had a quiet resolve to her as both entered to see what awaited them beyond their doors.

-----
What is this stupid school science shit!?

Needless to say whatever Tomiko had been expecting this had been as far removed from that as possible, as the proctor asked to write down the chemical compound for sulfuric acid. Like she had been forced back to the academy to take one of those academic make-up courses or something. Needless to say a sweat drop showed that this had not been the preferred question for her, as she sighed in annoyance before she took a pencil.

"You are lucky I was curious once on looking up acids for a prank. Otherwise you'd all hear it from me till the end of days..." Tomiko mumbled, as while this seemed annoying she had remembered this formula as she wrote down her answer in confidence and set her pencil down.

-----
Madoka entered and had been presented with the same formula to answer, though she had no way to know this as she glanced at the paper. Seemed a bit simple for her taste, there had to be more so she scanned the room naturally to take in everything in it...everything in detail, as one needed to have attention to it in the art of puppetry.

With a stroke of the pencil, she wrote down her answer after she had soaked in what she felt she needed to and waited to see what had been next.

----------
"Well, if one of your own has such issues with a door then my confidence in their ability is...well let's just say I'll wait to be proven wrong and look forward to that." Azumi replied to Sagiso after one of her ninja had caused a bit of a stunt as she could not blame her for questing things and looking for the subtext or underneath as ninja that had been expected of them.

But sometimes, part of your path involved the straight forward. And if you were too hesitant to move without absolute assurance on everything you'd only go so far in this world.

"I think I'll make my leave here once everyone goes through the door. I presume you have arrangements for your stay here?" Azumi asked Sagiso. Though as she had, Sagiso asked her a question in kind which caused her to raise an eyebrow.

"I'd prefer not to flatter me for a request, especially given the...circumstances, were far from ideal as far as the previous exams went. Regardless, why do you have interest? Water Release does not seem to suit your style, did you have an idea in mind?" Azumi asked, having not shot down the idea but had been curious what she aimed to get from it.

-----
Flashback
So Sagiso had traveled with one of her people here? She had known that despite the Hyuga bloodline Sagiso had not been of the Leaf so seeing another of those wanderers from her village had been a curious sight. Azumi merely offered a respectful nod to Amari in acknowledgement. "A pleasure."

So the Oto girl had been a friend? This was curious as she wondered how one of Orochimaru's flunkies ended up meeting them and rather when this friendship formed. Based on her injuries it seemed Tayuya had been involved in a battle, Azumi guessed it involved the Leaf given that snake's grudge against them but that had been pure speculation.

Regardless, Sagiso clued her in on a more personal reason; seemed her village had been prepared for a changing of the guard, the step forward for a new generation as the old guard left their reins to them. Azumi felt a village would be best to make a more gradual transition among generations but she had not been prepared to critique their cultural ways.

"I see. So you look to recruit this one." Azumi said with a gesture to Tayuya, who groaned as she laid prone. Reaver of course had questions as to these people as Azumi passed a subtle glance his way and answered with a touch of authority.

"Sagiso is a companion of mine. She and her company require a stay to aid one of their own, you will show them respect and hospitality and there will be no objections to that."

Course, Azumi wondered in Sagiso's sense of judgement with this Oto girl, given just who she had shown loyalty to before as a reflection of her character. But she'd bite her tongue on this...for now.

The head from the door immediately posed an issue to Hyō. The Hydrification technique was one that required her to stay constantly hydrated and the room betrayed heat which possessed a certain lethality towards her. Narrowing her eyes on the safer path, Hyō eventually decided to bite the bullet with a bit of caution. With a few hand seals, a shimmering, iridescent mist began to surround her and now, cloaking in the winds of her chemical genjutsu which doubled as a barrier that retained moisture, Hyō stepped onto the dangerous path.

Koki'o

Bang!

The rocks that were surrounding the girl fell prey to a mighty force, caving in as the Crying star stepped back into the first examination room, now equipped with a ghastly scythe. The expression on her face was one of strange disbelief. It stood to reason that her ability to successfully navigate the exams without putting herself in danger would constitute grounds for a pass, but evidently what exams looked for were zealotry and suicidal willingness.

Thinking back to her sister's failure for forfeiting during a match as opposed to risking life and limb, Koki'o couldn't help be feel she'd seen through the big picture. Shinobi were suicidal death-warriors!

However, be that as it may, the Crying Star had mixed feelings about her failure especially after, of all things, her Scorpion had been granted the go-ahead to pass.

Snorting dismissively, the girl muttered something under her breath.

"Huh...well, now I'm gonna win just to spite you..."

Sagisō

"That's what they say to sheep before they lead them to the slaughter," Sagisō quipped back, evidently not at all supportive of the, quite frankly, reckless, notion of rushing forward when the need to didn't exist.

Regardless, it wasn't a topic Sagisō cared to fuss over and she immediately followed up by answering Azumi's question.

"I'm bunking with you, of course. It would be ideal to live closer to my respected teacher after all," She snickered, a teasing lilt to her voice, "but I disagree, I think Water Release would suite me perfectly fine. Much better than Fire, Earth or Lightning Release would. I've got ideas in mind, so don't worry about me. My only other thought would be to learn Yang Release...but teachers are few and far between."

Tomiko’s Exam

The proctor watched as the irritated girl before her struggled to procure the solution. Eventually, she came around to the solution, scribbling it on her paper.

“...Good, good... Now press on...”

reverting to a mere puddle, Boxide’s clone allowed Tomiko to pass, the door at the end of the hall unlocking itself.

Madoka’s Exam

Looking over her shoulder, he expected a quip from her or some other kind of remark that showed how ‘easy’ it was. But he got nothing. At least there wasn’t any drama involved. A quick glance would prove she indeed got it correct.

“You seem like a book-read individual... Not too boastful... Hm... Interesting... ...Move on to the next room...”

With a nod, the clone reverted to a puddle, allowing access to the second portion of the exam.

.....

Kai’s Exam

“So, I have to find the key without personally touching it?”

“...If you do not have functioning ears, I know basic sign...”

“Quiet down! I’m trying to think!”

“...Sigh...”

Kai looked at the boxes before him, he had to find a way to discover which one held the key. Getting an idea, he decided to bend some water out from his canteen, moving it into the creases of the boxes, one after another. After getting to the eight box, he felt the water he was bending run into resistance upon sloshing about. Opening up the box, Kai gave a satisfied ‘humph’ as he plucked the key out.

“Surely these tests were designed for those with an inferior bloodline, no?”

“...Just put it in the keyhole kid...”

.......

Koki’o’s exam

The proctor’s clone gave a hearty laugh at the scorpion formed girl, stopping halfway to hack and cough fluid from his mask.

“...Ha...you did end up rewarding me with some amusement today... You may now exit the room... Goodbye.”

finding delight in her predicament, the clone vanished, leaving the real one still remaining in the main room where Koki’o Emerged from. She proclaimed she’d win to spite him...which didn’t move him at all.

“...I don’t care... Now leave.”

She had already taken the initiative and stormed her way out, something he found rather amusing. It’s what she deserved for interfering in his exam

.....

As the Hyo Chose the first room, shrouded in mist, the door creaked and the heat grew hotter and hotter, the coloring redder and redder before-

Giving this canned lecture about how a Ninja should be, he gestured toward the door, nodding his head in silent congratulations as the clone slowly became the green fluid that he always seemed to gurgle.

Shiho was resting her chin on her palm when the room’s genjutsu dropped. The girl looked on with a slight look of wonder. “Whoa.” She whispered simply.

The young girl had made her way down the hall towards her assigned door when she got distracted by the fire ball. Shiho stood idly as the event in the hallway played out and waited until it concluded before entering her door.

*Shiho’s Exam*

“...Welcome...This is the first step of the Exam...”

the clone of Boxide welcomed Shiho, gesturing to a desk with a pencil and paper on it. He huffed, green ooze dripping from his tubes.

“...I want you to display your intellect. Show me that there is more to you than just power... Write down the formula for Sulfuric Acid... Start now.”

*flashback*

Reaver gave a small snarl behind his gas mask but otherwise complied with Azumi’s demands, crossing his arms and looking in the opposite direction of Sagiso, the last thing he wanted was to be was recognized.

He did find slight amusement with an entirely woman faction having a maid delivering a platter of sandwiches. A small distraction from his state of being and his state of mind.

Only a little while longer...then it’s back to the rain.

Furījia

The Hyūga heiress thoughtfully considered the spectacle in the halls, but after seeing it to its conclusion, she figured that heading into the hallways was her best option. She had spent much of the past few months training with her mother and was more than confident in her own prowess.

Reaching the halls of the first exam she realized it was little more than an academic test...curious. She inspected the room closely for traps, even zapping the pencil with lightning to ensure it wasn't poisoned or something, but finding nothing of note, decided to simply sit down and answer the question. Sulphuric Acid? Was this really knowledge that a chūnin needed to know?

Yasu

With Tomiko's departure, Yasu paid no more attention to the happenings in the hall. He stepped into the corridor and made his way to the exam room, finding the test a bit more mundane than he was expecting. He knew sulphuric acid was sometimes used to treat the wood used to form puppets and while he wasn't sure what it actually did, he could hazard a guess. Fortunately, the proctor had asked for no more than the formula, and after wracking his brain for a few moments, Yasu wrote down what he could remember.

Koki'o

Clang!

The Crying Star was forced back several steps as the flat of her Scythe collided with the wooden boot. Evidently the proctor had a bit of a bone to pick with her, but she paid it no mind. Rather, she paid a lot of mind. Silently engraving the proctor's face into her heart. She would remember him.

Her tasks evidently completed though, she girl departed the examination, throwing a small wave to Sagisō as she left.

Stepping forth towards the desk after hearing about her task, Shiho picked up the pencil and began tapping it against the desk as she stared at the paper, seemingly spending some time thoroughly thinking about it. She then suddenly looking up toward Boxide. “I have absolutely no idea what the answer is, can I skip this question?” She asked, a completely casual expression on her face.

"All right! Ha and they said messing around gets you nowhere." Tomiko said with a touch of pride in her accomplishment as she walked forward to the next room with a spring to her step. So far so good but this had been just a part of the thing, so long as the next phase involved no paper she had been secure in her chances!

-----
Madoka had given a light bow before the figure as she proceeded to the next room. She reserved any comments to herself, really it had been a waste of energy to give thoughts on reasons for any test as she simply tried to focus on what had to come next. Though a discussion once this exam finished that may have been a different matter...

----------
"Life is balance Sagiso, to presume everything is a ruse means you are hesitant to take even the most basic steps forward. Rushing in with reckless abandon is careless but insisting on being on the tips of your toes with every little thing is short sighted; life will not wait for your guaranteed assurance at every step I am afraid." Azumi replied matter of factly. She then listened to Sagiso as she talked about her desire to incorporate Water Release with her style or rather more specifically Yang Release.

"Very well, though of course I would like to see your style in action and perhaps pick up something of use from it. But I see no issues with it." Azumi said with a shrug, as she watched one of those stars enter back from the hall which caused her to raise an eyebrow. Had she failed already? The girl passed them a wave as Azumi passed a glance Sagiso's way.

"I presume you are proud." Azumi said with but a touch of dry sarcasm.

Amari listened as her sister made a huge fuss about entering the corridor. She could understand her sister's hesitation to enter. Sagisō had told the Koki'o and herself just how crazy the other nations were about these exams, putting everything on the line for what was essentially nothing more than a title. Amari didn't care much about the title, but she did intend to go as far as possible in the exams. It wasn't about the title for her, she just had something to prove to herself.

Koki'o had unleashed the Crying technique straight into her own Corridor. While the technique was mostly for Koki'o's knowledge of what was ahead, Amari was able to pick up on most of the feedback with her hearing. Assuming all rooms were the same, Amari could expect to find a clone, a piece of paper, and something to write within the room ahead. The contents of the room seemed harmless enough, so Amari found no reason to follow Koki'o's refusal of entering the room, especially since it seemed they would force her to anyway based on her sister's current predicament. However, Amari would at least be cautious thanks to her sister's actions.

Amari entered through the door and into the exam room to find precisely what she had been expecting thanks to Koki'o's crying technique. Upon entering, the clone informed her that for the first trial, she simply had to write down the chemical formula for Sulfuric Acid. Had they said many other substances, Amari might not have been able to oblige, but Sulfuric Acid did happen to be one of the few substances she picked up thanks to her experiences with Nadeshiko. She wrote down the chemical formula and handed it to Boxide.
