If you want to make a "life changing decision" just do it NOW. As soon as you think of it. Don't use the new year as a lame excuse to try and make a difference, you will NOT follow through with it "just because its a new year!".
The funny part is, you'd be surprised how many people actually do follow through with life changes at the beginning of a new year. Sometimes a person needs to be faced with the fact that yet another year has come and gone (another year wasted sitting around thinking, planning, worrying) before getting their ass into gear and doing something about it. Humans are silly that way, but hey, whatever helps get someone motivated~
I personally don't have "new year's resolutions" per se but my immediate goal for the future is to get back into creative writing and, to a smaller extent, Astronomy. Ultimately I just hope that 2013 is a better year than 2012, for reasons uncontrollable by myself.
