Finally, after months of waiting, theorising and debating, we now have the first real details about Pokémon Sword and Shield! Today's Pokémon Direct dished the dirt on several new Pokémon, some new features and, of course, the release date: 15th November worldwide! Here's our full roundup of everything announced today:
New Pokémon:

Gossifleur
Category: Flowering Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′4″
Weight: 4.9 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

Gossifleur prefers land with clear water and air. Its pollen has a healing effect and is commonly used as a folk medicine remedy and made into a tea given to children in the Galar region when they are ill. Gossifleur travels over long distances by getting blown along by the wind. It controls the direction of its travels by twisting its body and petals.

Eldegoss
Category: Cotton Bloom Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 1′8″
Weight: 5.5 lbs.
Ability: Cotton Down / Regenerator

When Gossifleur evolves into Eldegoss, its head becomes covered in thick cotton fluff. This cotton fluff serves as a cushion that helps to protect Eldegoss’s head from damage. The tiny seeds attached to the cotton fluff are said to be highly nutritious and beneficial to both people and Pokémon. Eldegoss spreads these seeds throughout the region, making the soil of the Galar region rich in nutrients.

Corviknight_Corvaillus_Krarmor.png
Corviknight
Category: Raven Pokémon
Type: Flying/Steel
Height: 7′3″
Weight: 165.3 lbs.
Ability: Pressure / Unnerve

It is said that Corviknight is the strongest Pokémon living in the skies of the Galar region. It can often be seen fearlessly soaring through the air. Many say that any Pokémon foolish enough to challenge Corviknight are sent running with just a sharp glare and cry from this fearsome Pokémon. Because Corviknight possess superb flying skills and high intelligence, many of them work for the company called Galar Taxi and help transport people from town to town.

web-Drednaw_Torgamord_Kamalm.png
Drednaw
Category: Bite Pokémon
Type: Water/Rock
Height: 3′3″
Weight: 254.6 lbs.
Ability: Strong Jaw / Shell Armor

The jagged fangs of the Bite Pokémon Drednaw are strong and sharp enough to bite through rock and iron. Though it has a heavy shell, its well-developed muscles allow it to move quickly. Drednaw is known to be extremely aggressive, so it takes a skilled Trainer to tame and handle this Pokémon. It seems that some Trainers will release Drednaw back into the wild once they discover they can’t handle it.

web-Wooloo2_Moumouton2_Wolly2.png
Wooloo
Category: Sheep Pokémon
Type: Normal
Height: 2′
Weight: 13.2 lbs.
Ability: Fluffy / Run Away

The white fur that covers Wooloo’s body grows throughout its life and will fully grow back in three months even if it has been completely shorn. The fur is used for clothing, carpets, and other goods and is very popular as a specialty product of the Galar region. Wooloo live as a herd and mimic the actions of their Trainer or herd leader. They dislike conflict, and if they need to escape from enemies, they will simply roll away.

web-Zacian.png
Zacian
Category: Unknown
Type: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Ability: Unknown

The Legendary Pokémon Zacian’s attacks are so graceful that its movements captivate opponents. Holding what appears to be a sword in its mouth, Zacian’s shining blade can cut through anything.

web-Zamazenta.png
Zamazenta
Category: Unknown
Type: Unknown
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Ability: Unknown

With majestic movements and what appears to be a shield covering its body, the Legendary Pokémon Zamazenta can turn back any attack and overwhelm any opponents that dare face it.

As you might have already guessed, Zacian is the featured Legendary for Pokémon Sword, while Zamazenta is the featured Legendary for Pokémon Shield.

People

web-Professor_Magnolia_Professor_Magnolica_Professoressa_Flora_Profesora_Magnolia.png
This region's Pokémon Professor is called Professor Magnolia. She fulfils the typical role of providing you with your first starter Pokémon and will continue to support you throughout your Pokémon journey. Her area of expertise is the Galar region phenomenon of 'Dynamaxing'.

people_sonia.jpg

Professor Magnolia's granddaughter, Sonia is also the childhood friend of the region's Champion and serves as her Grandmother's assistant - a role that sees her supporting you throughout your journey.

Leon_Tarak_Delion_Dandel_Lionel.png
The region's champion, Leon, is a superstar in the region due to Pokémon battles being the biggest form of entertainment in Galar. He is entirely undefeated in his history of official Pokémon battles.

Hop_Nabil_Paul.png
Leon's inexplicably named little brother, Hop, is your rival. He starts his journey alongside you, seeking to topple his brother and claim the role of champion for himself.

Milo_Percy_Yarro_Yarrow.png
The first Gym Leader in the Galar region is Milo. He's a Grass type trainer and specialises in 'endurance' battles - indicating that he might be particularly fond of status effects in battle.

New Features

As we've now come to expect, this new generation of Pokémon brings with it a brand new battle mechanic: Dynamaxing.

p17_02.jpg

In special places in the Galar region - such as Gyms - this phenomeon can be used to super size your Pokémon and maximise its attacks. In a sense, Dynamaxing is a sort-of combination of Mega Evolution and Z-Moves, albeit without a Pokemon changing forms. Like those features, this can be done at any point in battle, but can only be done once. Unlike Mega Evolution, however, after three rounds, your Pokémon will return to normal.

p20_03.jpg

You can also encounter Dynamaxed Pokémon in Max Raid Battles. These Pokémon-Go-like raids will see you and up to three other players- either locally or online - team up to take on a massive Dynamaxed Pokémon. The opponent will remain Dynamaxed throughout the battle, while your team will only get one chance for just one of you to Dynamax your own Pokémon for a brief time - demanding co-ordination and strategy. Even though the Nintendo Switch will not support voice chat in-game...

These Max Raid Battles can be found in perhaps the most exciting new feature: the Wild Area.

p18_02.jpg
The Wild Area is a section in the center of the Galar Region where the game effectively transforms into an Open World style title. Here a huge variety of wild Pokémon roam the land - the type of Pokémon you'll see being dictated by the location and the weather at the time - and will change in some way every day.

wild-area.png
But the Wild Area isn't the only place you'll see Pokémon out and about in the world. As well as seeing plenty of Pokémon living and working alongside humans in the cities and towns of the Galar region, you'll also be able to encounter wild Pokémon by finding them out in the world, just like in Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee.

p09_02.jpg

Unlike those games, however, Sword and Shield will also include Pokémon hiding in the tall grass waiting to ambush you much like previous Pokémon games. If you see an exclamation mark in the grass, you're in for a battle just as much as if you're chased down by one of these Pokémon visible in the world itself.

Items

Finally, we also learned about a couple of key items in the game.

Dband_Poignet_Dynamax_Dynamax-Band_Polsino_Dynamax_Munequera_Dinamax.png
The Dynamax Band, unsurprisingly, is the key to being able to Dynamax your Pokémon. You'll receive this at some point during your journey, but it would seem to be pretty early on as Dynamaxing is demonstrated as being a key component of the first Gym.

web-Phone-art02.png

The PokéDex in this game is in fact a phone that's been possessed by a Rotom - much like the RotomDex in Alola. As well as serving as the game's PokéDex, this Rotom Phone can also help you out and about in the world, such as being attached to your bike to make it go faster, or to be able to travel across water using it - once that ability is unlocked.

Sonia is a good waifu, and I'm definitely going to get Shield.
Idk what it is, but I'm not a big fan of the legendaries for this gen, and I'm not a fan of the Dynamax feature either.

Sword and Shield has delivered on most of the features fans have been craving from the first real Pokemon title on the Switch. The game is fully open world, it has Wild Encounters on the overworld, has a rotatable camera as mentioned in the trailer, and with Corviknight being a confirmed Ride Pokemon, I think it's safe to assume that's back as well. Although with the ability to ride the bike in the water for Surfing, Ride Pokemon will probably be a diminished feature.

All of the Pokemon shown off today are amazing and I want them. Corviknight and Drednaw will make fine additions to my team alongside Grookey. I like Zacian and Zamazenta. I think they're pretty cool designs. Due to how similar they look to each other, I'm willing to bet that they are counterparts evolving from the same pre-evolution much like how Solgaleo and Lunala both come from Cosmog. The trailer also seemed to hint that they have a common foe in possibly the third Legendary of their trio with the ominous wind blowing at the end of their introduction.

I don't have much to say about the human characters, though I'm glad we're getting our second female professor. I'm extremely amused that the Pokedex is a smart phone this time and that it is once again possessed by Rotom. The Dynamax feature is insane but it looks like I'll only be able to use it in Gyms. If I want to do a Raid Battle, I'll have to bite the bullet and get a Switch online subscription since I only regularly hangout with two other Switch users.

Wow, this region looks gorgeous! The "Wild Area" is everything I could have hoped for, and I will probably spend most of my time playing this game in that area. Honestly, I have always felt that the routes and caves we could explore in Pokemon games were too restrictive, and the few options for more "open" areas, such as the water routes of the Hoenn games, always felt woefully lacking in execution. This change is definitely going in a direction I like!

On another topic, I find it interesting how much influence Pokemon Go is having on the main series, considering some of the innovative changes that have been introduced since that app's introduction. I had never considered that we would get something akin to Raid Battles in the main games, but I love the idea! All in all, I am glad that the Pokemon games are continuing to innovate in exciting ways; now, let's just hope that some of the better changes stick around for future games. ;)

CORVIKNIGHT LOOKS LIKE A GOD

What kinda lets me down is the fact that the Legendaries are exactly what everyone thought they were gonna be, a sword and shield canine. But the other Pokémon look pretty cute and cool(definitely Corviknight) and yes, a magnolia tree is a real tree

The implications of being able to create a giant Magikarp were completely lost on me for almost the full day since Dynamaxing was revealed because Wooloo is so perfect and I love it

I hope this new open world is ready for my new team of Giant Shiny Magikarp and Five Wooloo

I just noticed something else. The rival is, yet again, going to choose the Pokemon that has a disadvantage against the one you choose. Or at least, that's what it seems like.
The official website says Hop is one of your rivals. There's probably going to be another one who chooses the starter strong against yours.

I wasn’t as hyped as everyone else while watching the Direct because I kept getting distracted, but I’m still excited over everything. I’m waiting to see the other new Pokémon to see who to add to my team, though Wooloo & Dreadnaw are definitely two major contenders. I was also excited at all of the minor elements in the game as well such as how the protagonist actually looks like they’re going to show emotions this time (rather than having the same blank smile like in Sun & Moon).

As for Dynamaxing, while I’m excited to have kaiju pokémon battles in-game, I think this looks like a fun game changer that will do a great job at shaking up the metagame. At the very least, the max attacks will change the types of moves people use in WiFi so we won’t see everyone using the same Smogon movesets over & over again. I’m not that excited about Max Raids though since I was never able to do raid battles in Pokémon Go & knowing my luck I won’t have enough friends to do them online.

I was personally indifferent to an open world pokémon game, but the Wild Area really looks promising (though i’m still hoping the towns & cities will be more expansive than they’ve been in previous regions).

On a side note, I think it’s amazing that’s James Turner was the art director for these games. I know he got a lot of hate and negative criticism when he first joined Game Freak for creating Vanillite, but it’s so cool to see that he was able to do what so many of us dream of doing

Oi! Pokemon Company! Make an original boost or something and I'll consider buying the game.
Until then Dynamaxing and the disappointing legendaries are big nos.
And if you make scorbunny a gosh darn fire/fighting I'm gonna toss myself into a trash bin.
