DPPt/HGSS Random question about WiFi

Ok, so in Platinum, I know HOW to connect to WiFi, but my DS does not like our router. (You guys know how picky it is)

So my question is, could I just walk into some random place that has "free wifi!" and connect to it? I just want my Mystery Gift! Once I get a credit card I will buy a USB adapter for the DS. Until then, anyone happen to know?

Should be able to, just check the settings out and look for connections when you enter said "OMG FREE WIFI!" place
