Shadows (A Collection of Stuff I Wrote Down)

Tailon

Gryffindork
Hello there, I don't believe I've ever posted in this board. This here writing collection is named after the first entry, a very short script called...

Shadows
Opening Shot: Exterior, Far off shot of a silent house, two stories tall, but not very large overall, standing alone in the darkness alongside a crumbling road. Rain falls as a lone figure enters the frame (from right), a coat seemingly held tight around them, it is difficult to tell in the darkness.

Move To: A close profile of the figure as they walk along the road, their face obscured by a hood, until a thunder, signaled by first by lightning, roars across the sky, the characters looks toward the camera, revealing the face for a split second as lightning strikes again, before they huddle back into the hood for warmth.

Cut To: A further profile, panning with the character as they approach the house carefully. They stop to check the window, satisfied that the place is abandoned, they move to the door, kneeling to pick the lock only to find it open.

Cut To: Interior, a small living room. The only furniture remaining is an ancient couch and a small table in one corner. Character enters through the just opened door, examining the room as they pull down the hood of their coat, revealing their face more fully, though it is still dark.

Move To: Waist up shot of character, following them as they cross the room, to an empty door frame.

Cut To: A smallish kitchen, the appliances remain, though disheveled. Character checks the refrigerator, only to find the expected nothing, then moves on, leaving the room, presumably back through the living room.

Cut To: The top of a narrow staircase. The shadows seem to shift slightly, though it may be an illusion, as the character appears in the background, at the foot of the stairs, looking up toward the camera.

Cut To: Over the shoulder shot of the character, as they climb the stairs, slowly, always cautious.

Move To: Waist up shot of the character, standing in a bedroom, a door leads off into a bathroom at one end of the room, and the bed still remains. Seeming satisfied, the traveler removes their coat, placing it carefully by the side of the bed. They lie down, though their eyes don’t shut.

Cut To: A close up shot of the character, lying on their side. The shadows seem to shift again.

Traveller
“Hello?”

Fade To: Sunlight streams through the bedroom window of an old house. No there is no sign of the traveler in the bedroom.

Cut To: The kitchen, filled with light. Again, the traveler is missing.

Cut To: The living room. The room is still mostly dark, though light comes in from the kitchen, the shades are drawn. A long, hooded coat hangs by the sleeve on the doorknob. The sleeve hangs from the door as we

Anywho, I wrote a thing, it's kinda short, and seekritly just a school assignment, but I decided to post it anyway cause I dunno.

The rough fabric of a white karate gi rubbed against the man’s arms and legs as he walked, stepping with a multitude of splashes down the muddy road. In the distance, a bolt of lightning struck the earth, followed moments later by the crash of thunder. Water poured in force onto the meager coat the man had acquired to protect himself from it. Closer, another flash of light lit up the man’s face, thunder rolled once more.

The mud splashed with each step, his bare feet growing colder with each movement. Closer still, the light flashed before his eyes, and once more the sky roared. Winds whipped at the man’s face as he walked the path, throwing the icy waters at him with their full force. The man raised a hand and scratched lightly at his chin and the short beard that had grown there, causing him a mild itch as he followed his path. The night grew colder as the man continued to travel, again the entire field was illuminated by the lightning, the sky rumbling again in protest.

It was dark when the man arrived in the small village. Warm light streamed from a tiny inn, beckoning travellers from the cold. The man stepped inside, and the cold left him. It was bright and warm here. Warm drinks were offered, and he was able to clean away the cold mud. Far in the distance, lightning struck the earth one final time, followed moments later by the crash of thunder.

Oh wow, these are certainly interesting. Scripts are a rare find, so yours was a nice treat.

I like how clearly the chain of events flowed together and were easy to follow while still being vague enough that the readers/watchers still had no idea what was going on. Who was that man? What was he doing? Why was he doing it? What happened to him at the end? Those questions made things very suspenseful and the fact that none were answered leaves a very fun brain tease like many of life's unanswered questions.

The second story, while no a script, was much the same way. Just ordinary people going about their lives and we only seem to care about them because we're reading their story. You also seem to like writing rainy scenes I noticed ;D

The tl;dr version: I liked them and hope to see more from you Tailon!

So I wrote another script. It's a short detective story, longer than my last though.

Here's a PDF for easier reading.

Blood on the Concrete

SCENE ONE

EXT. The Black Bear

A small, inviting looking bar in San Diego, California, it

is a dark night in the fall of 1947 as a man exits the

establishment, waving to unseen friends inside. He begins to

look up and down the street, waiting for a taxicab to appear

in the traffic. A shadowy figure is seen to move in an

alleyway nearby, appearing to raise a handgun.

MEDIUM CLOSE UP: SHADOWY FIGURE

FIGURE

You’ve angered the wrong people,

Mr. Pearce.

WIDE: EXT. THE BLACK BEAR

The man, Mr. Pearce, turns quickly to look at the alleyway,

gasping.

CLOSE UP: SHADOWY FIGURE

The crack of a gunshot rings through the alleyway, then the

figure cleans his gun with a small cloth, and places it back

into his jacket, and begins walking.

WIDE: EXT. THE BLACK BEAR

The man enters a car parked nearby, starts the engine, and

drives away as the bar’s patrons begin to trickle outside to

see what has happened.

FADE TO BLACK

SCENE TWO

EXT. The Black Bear

A black car drives up and parks across the road. DETECTIVE

COLE GREYSON steps out, wearing a grey suit and matching

fedora. He walks over to the bar and flashes his badge to

the patrolman standing watch.

OVER THE SHOULDER: COLE SPEAKING WITH THE PATROLMAN

COLE (ALMOST EXASPERATED)

So what do we got?

PATROLMAN

Murder, looks like, witnesses are

sayin’ there was gunfire.

COLE

Alright, lemme check things out.

WIDE: THE CRIME SCENE

The victim has already been examined by a coroner, and is

covered by a white sheet, ready to be transported for

autopsy. The coroner, a man of about 45, approaches COLE.

TWO-SHOT: THE CORONER AND COLE

CORONER

Welp Cole, if you can catch this

one you must be some kinda wizard

’cause all we can find is a bullet

and a dead man.

COLE

Just gimme the rundown, doc.

CORONER

Single bullet wound to the head,

died instantly, at least.

COLE

Sounds gruesome. I’ll take a look

around and talk to some of the

witnesses, then we can notify next

of kin.

WIDE: THE CRIME SCENE

Cole steps away from his conversation with the coroner, and

begins surveying the scene. He notices the victim’s hat on

the ground, and picks it up, examining it with a trained

eye. He finds little but a bloodstain, and replaces the hat,

instead walking over to the witness, a man in his mid-20s.

COLE takes a small notebook and pencil from his pocket.

OVER THE SHOULDER: COLE SPEAKING WITH THE WITNESS

COLE

Good evening. Can you tell me what

you saw or heard?

WITNESS (NERVOUS)

S-sure, sure I can. So, Mr. Pearce

over there, um, the victim, sir, he

was just heading home, and, from

WITNESS (NERVOUS) (cont’d)

the window, it looked like he was

waiting for a cab or a ride or

somethin’. Then all of a sudden Mr.

Pearce turned around, lookin’

pretty startled, and then there was

this massive cracking sound, like a

firecracker, and Mr. Pearce keeled

over.

COLE

Mhmm, alright. Did you see any

people or vehicles leaving the

scene afterwards?

WITNESS

Ummm, yeah, yeah I did actually!

A-a Ford! Looked at least a couple

years old...

COLE

Did you see a plate number?

WITNESS

I think it started with I7W...

Yeah, sorry, but that’s all I can

remember of it, it was already

driving away when I got outside.

COLE pats the WITNESS’s shoulder.

COLE

Don’t worry about it, bud, you

helped out plenty.

WIDE: THE CRIME SCENE

COLE passes the PATROLMAN again and stops to talk to him.

COLE

Do we have an adress on the victim?

PATROLMAN

Yup, 2071 Albatross Street.

COLE

Alright, get a statement for the

witness to sign, I’ll head out to

notify next of kin.

COLE begins to walk to his car.

FADE TO BLACK

4.

SCENE THREE

EXT. 2071 Albatross St.

An average sized, almost generic looking home, COLE’s car

pulls up and he steps out of the vehicle, he begins to walk

to the door.

MEDIUM: THE HOUSE

Cole enters the frame and walks to the door and knocks on

it. After a moment, as flustered looking woman in a violet

dress partially opens the door.

WOMAN

Hello?

COLE

Allycia Pearce?

MRS. PEARCE

Yes?

COLE

Ma’am, I’m sorry to inform you that

your husband was shot and killed

earlier tonight outside of The

Black Bear.

MRS. PEARCE takes a few steps back as if struck, one hand

covers her mouth.

MRS. PEARCE (QUIETLY)

Oh no...

COLE

I’m very sorry ma’am, but if you

know anything that can help us,

it’d be greatly appreciated.

MRS. PEARCE

Of course, of course, please, come

in.

INT. THE HOUSE

Both enter, and MRS. PEARCE leads COLE to a couch and chair,

facing each other. COLE sits on the couch, and MRS. PEARCE

across from him.

COLE

Mrs. Pearce, do you know of

anything that may have been a

motivating factor...anyone that

might have a motive?

MRS. PEARCE

Well, you see, not too long ago, my

husband got himself involved in

some...shady business.

COLE

Shady, like what?

MRS. PEARCE

Well, the problem started when he

borrowed some money. We tried to

pay it back but the interest just

kept increasing...

COLE

Some kind of loan shark an his

goons, then...

COLE stands and shakes MRS. PEARCE’s hand.

COLE

Well, thank you for your help

ma’am, by the by, would you mind if

I used your phone?

MRS. PEARCE

Of course, and please, go ahead.

COLE crosses the room, and picks up the phone.

FADE TO

SCENE FOUR

EXT. A large house, the next morning

COLE pulls up to a house much larger than the Pearce’s, he

exits his car and walks up to the gate, which is unlocked.

He walks up to the door and knocks. After a few moments with

no answer he knocks a few more times. Feeling that something

is off, he draws his handgun and knocks harder.

COLE (SHOUTING)

Open up, it’s the police!

A door can be heard opening and slamming shut accross the

house, COLE’s eyes widen and he breaks into a run, going

around the house as an engine starting is heard. COLE clears

the rest of the house, and runs in front of the car outside,

which has only just begun to run. He aims at the man inside

the car, who punches the wheel in anger.

COLE (SHOUTING)

Stop right there, you’re under

arrest!

The other man steps out of the car, with his hands in the

air, he is visibly the same man who killed Mr. Pearce. COLE

begins to handcuff him.
