The morning sun cast rays between the oak leaves as Ambrose Vance trudged along the beaten path. Today was the day he was finally leaving home to start his Pokémon journey. He was older than most beginner trainers from other regions, being a young man of 15. It wasn't uncommon for parents here to delay their children's virgin expedition until they were confident in their maturity. The unknown of Magnol's wilderness could be dangerous at times. Ambrose couldn't help but smile when he breathed in the fresh air of freedom. The skyline of the big city of Sonax had already almost faded from his view.
He would eventually have to return home to challenge the capital's gym leader, but he wasn't in any rush. He had spent nearly every waking day of his life within the confines of that place. Magnol was unique in the fact that aspiring challengers could take on gyms in any order. League leaders were required to have various teams prepared for competitors depending on how many badges they had acquired. Ambrose would come back to Sonax when he was ready.
Daydreams of extravagant battles filled the young man's mind. He was so amped to show the world what he was made of. The pokéball in his jacket was warm from his constant caress. He had received his partner, a Magnolan Cyndaquil, only a week prior from the region's most prestigious researcher, Professor Kudzu. It was a variant native only to Magnol, as it possessed an extra water typing in addition to the standard fire. The flames on its back were a deep blue and burned in a shape of a dorsal fin, and while its top fur looked similar to a normal member of its Johtonian species, Cyndaquil's underbelly was lavender and slightly scaly. This particular Pokémon was a male, Kudzu had told him. Ambrose had been contemplating a good nickname all week, but his indecisive nature had gotten the best of him so far.
The eager rookie wanted to rush off into the wilderness as soon as he was gifted with his new friend, but his parents had encouraged him to take the necessary time to prepare. He bought a few supplies like bedding, food, and medicine for both him and his partner. Ambrose had been saving his funds for a while, earning a little money from chores and from borrowing the family's Pokémon (often without permission) for skirmishes with his peers. His family wasn't wealthy, and that was an unfortunate frustration the young man had always had to face. Although he loved his parents, he felt like his secondhand lifestyle had always held him back. He yearned to experience the places his family couldn't afford to take him, and now was his chance.
The Magnolan League had only just started its first season. There wasn't even an established champion for the region yet. Several towns and cities were still under a century old, and much of the population had only immigrated in the last 50 years. Ambrose was a third generation Magnolan. His grandparents had arrived in their youth to help cultivate the area's expanding civilization. He couldn't help but wonder how different and exciting it was for them to brave a foreign land. His personal mission was to become the first Magnolan champion and become a pioneer in his own right.
"Should be a piece of cake", he said with a sly grin. His confidence in his abilities was admirable yet naive. He had borrowed his parents' Pokémon to battle with local kids before, and he usually fared well. However, it was different to actually train a Pokémon of his own. Ambrose and Cyndaquil had no experience together. The rookie duo would need to develop a deep bond if they were to persevere, and that meant it was time to train. The battle-hungry boy veered off the path towards some tall brush under an oaken canopy. Greatness wasn't going to earn itself.
Ambrose's search for a suitable fight was interrupted by a distant yet familiar sound. The hum of a commercial airliner echoed high above the branches. Its only possible destination was Sonax City, Magnol's only airport. Local flight was all done via Pokémon, but Tailwind Airlines ferried passengers to and from other regions. The allure of Magnol brought many visitors to the capital's hub. Ambrose wondered what type of trainers were arriving each day to face the League and how they would impact the future of his home. Whoever they were, he would show them his strength if they dared challenge him. He tightened his bandana, clenched his fist, and continued to search for Cyndaquil's first wild opponent.
