Isaac North waved goodbye to his parents, and set off into the streets of Littleroot Town. The two had been kind enough to make sure the fifteen year old got to the town safely from his home of Rustboro City. He was going to be a Trainer, not just any Trainer, but a master of Pokemon biology and genetics. As a native of Hoenn, Littleroot Town was definitely the place to start out. The sleepy little village was home to a community college, where the local Starter Program was run by a man named Professor Birch.
The fifteen year old wasn’t all that impressive looking. Blue eyes, with square rimmed glasses, dusty brown hair, with stubble marking the beginnings of a goatee. The area had probably never been shaved since he was old enough to grow hair, but still was barely noticeable. He couldn’t be any taller then 5’8”, and was lean, but had no real muscle on him either. He wore urban camo cargo pants, along with a white t-shirt, white sneakers, a brown satchel bag, and a gray light jacket. Cold weather wasn’t too much of a trouble in Hoenn, but the coat would definitely help when it rained. And it certainly rained a lot this time of year.
His goal was to study abroad, stopping in all the major cities for local knowledge on the subjects he wished to excel in at libraries and maybe even in the heads of some of the locals. Having Pokemon not only made him safer for all this, but also allowed him to get hands on knowledge, and while he hoped to become friends with any Pokemon he might get, he didn’t want to rule out the possibility of maybe performing a few tests with them. Nothing inhumane, of course, just simple little things. The teenager even had a notebook which he planned to fill with these experiments.
The town was small, and thus it wasn’t hard for Isaac to find the lab in which the Starter Program was run. There was quite a large area fenced in around the lab, no doubt where the three species, Torchic, Mudkip, and Treecko, were kept safe from predators and poachers. The lab itself was a small building sitting at the border of this fence. Isaac approached, and knocked. After a moment, the door opened, a middle aged man with a beard was staring back at him.
“You must be one of the new Trainers I had an appointment with today,” the man smiled. He reached his hand out to shake Isaac’s, before introducing himself. “I’m Professor Birch; it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Though, you’re a bit early.”
Isaac nodded. True, he was earlier then the expected time. He had hoped to catch the Professor early to have a good pick of the Starters, and also ask him a few questions. The Professor moved out of the way of the door and showed him to the table where today’s Starters were being kept. As Isaac had hoped, he had gotten there first, and thus all three of the Pokeballs were still sitting on the table.
“You can take your pick of these three,” the Professor explained, “The left contains Torchic. It’s a Fire Type. There’s also Mudkip, in the middle, a Water Type, and Treecko, on the right, a Grass Type.”
Isaac considered for a few minutes, before grabbing the leftmost ball. He pushed the button in the middle, and let out a small orange and yellow bird. The bird hopped over to him, looking him over.
“Alright, Torchic it is,” the Professor nodded. He then picked up the small bird and turned it over. After a moment, he showed Isaac what he was looking at, “This one’s a boy, you can tell because this tail feather here has a large black dot on it. It can be a little hard to locate, but it’s there if you look.”
Isaac nodded; there was indeed a black dot on one of the bird’s feathers. He’d have to note that in his book. If he wanted to know everything, he’d have to start with the simple things, including being able to tell gender differences. The Professor offered the bird to the teenager, and after a moment, Isaac accepted it back. He was surprised to find it was very warm to the touch. It must have shown on his face, as the Professor laughed.
“Torchic have pouches for their fire attacks much like other Fire Types. It makes them very warm to the touch,” he explained, “They’re very friendly, like all Starters, but watch out for its fireballs. Though they may be small, they burn at about 1000 degrees Celsius.”
Again, Isaac nodded. This was a lot of information the professor was dumping on him, and it was all for one Pokemon. The teenager was beginning to fear he would need a bigger book. Maybe if he wrote really small he could conserve space…
“So, I guess all that’s left is a nickname, if you want to give the little guy one, and any questions you might have,” Professor Birch said, breaking Isaac out of his thoughts.
“Nickname, right,” Isaac frowned. He held the bird away from him for a moment, and stared at it. The Torchic stared back, the gleam in its eyes either very happy, or very sly. “Cid, I think,” the teenager finally said. “And I think you covered a little of the stuff I wanted to know. Do you mind if I take a few minutes to think of a few questions?”
In truth, Isaac just wanted to write down everything the Professor told him before he forgot. Birch just nodded, and said “Sure, that’s perfectly fine. I’ve got two others coming today to pick up their first Pokemon, so I’ll probably be here at the lab most of the day. Just as long as you don’t interrupt them, you can feel free to stay a while and think.”
Isaac grinned a little, before nodding and heading outside. He put the little orange bird down once he was out, and took a seat next to the door. Cid wandered a little away, this likely being his first time outside of the fence, but stayed close to Isaac’s location. The teenager, meanwhile, opened up the brown satchel and pulled out a thick notebook with a black cover. He opened it, and started writing.
“Torchic – Small orange bird. Has yellow wings and a yellow crest of feathers. Legs and feet are three toed and devoid of feathers. Males have a small black dot on their tail feathers. Have pouches where they make their fires. They are very warm to the touch. Fireballs are excessively hot.”
That was about everything, for now. The teenager looked up from his book, watching Cid. How much space should he dedicate to every Pokemon? Was a whole page good? Too much? Or maybe even too little? Isaac frowned. He wanted to save as much space as possible, while still devoting ample room to each Pokemon. For now, he would settle on one page, and hopefully if he needed more he’d find out before too long. For now, he was content to sit and watch Cid as he explored his immediate surroundings.
