Undying Devotion

My first fic. You can give constructive criticism if you want. Hope you enjoy.

~Chapter 1~

The sun always seem to shine the hottest in Hoenn, especially in a town that's at the foot of an active volcano. Endell departed her house, shouted a "goodbye" to her mother and strutted down the dirt roads of Lavaridge Town. She was on her way to Fortree City for her sixth badge, confident that it'll be in her grasp before long. Her beloved Ninetales, who was named Deidra, was at her side, her majestic tails flowed in the brisk, ashy wind.

Endell was only thirteen, but she had a lot of experience about battling. Her long wavy hair was midnight black, but it often showed different values of brown in sunlight. She was tall for her age, being 5' 2" and a little over a hundred pounds. She wore a red T-shirt with black vines and roses being the design, grayish cargo pants that covered the majority of her black and white checkered shoes, and a thin pitch black sweater with shades of red all over.

She had a couple of battles on the way to keep her occupied. Even though none of them were a challenge to her, she thought of it as training.

"Okay, so it'll take about a week to reach the end of Route 112", She thought to herself. " I'm just going to do that and worry about the rest when I get to Mauville"

Her thoughts were interrupted by a mysterious figure staring right at her. Deidra glared and snarled at the man, but he just cracked a grin and walked away. Endell raised an eyebrow.

"What the heck was that?" She asked her Ninetales. "What a freak, looking at you like that..."
Deidra smirked at the figure who was walking to the horizon, giving the expression, "Whatever." Endell laughed as if Deidra really talked to her. It was easy for Endell to understand Deidra since they both had a very close spiritual relationship, sometimes it seemed liked Deidra actually used human speech and expressions. Endell had Deidra ever since she was a baby Vulpix. As they grew up with each other they developed a spiritual bond that is now so close they can talk to each other in their thoughts and feel one another's emotions.

The scorching summer sun finally settled to the west as Endell looked for a good place to spend the night. She found a flat area with a couple of tree stumps.

"This looks like a good place to sleep for the night". Endell said as she set down her backpack filled with Pokemon medicine, a month supply of food, and a few Pokeballs. She placed her sleeping bag by a tree stump and put some food in a pan over the fire Deidra made. As the insta-noodles cooked, Endell released her other three Pokemon, Bellosom, Skarmory, and Lanturn to feed them the usual Pokebrand Pokefood. After everybody ate, Endell and Deidra gazed at the trillions of stars in the night sky, trying to identify all of them while the other three went out and played by a pond.

It was about two hours after they ate, so Endell decided. "Alright guys, it's time to sleep. So whoever wants to return to their Pokeballs, step toward me".

Of course, everyone but Deidra stepped forward to return to the safety inside their Pokeballs. Deidra always wanted to be close to Endell, just as Endell always wanted to be close to Deidra.

The next morning was brisk and humid which woke Endell from her deep sleep. Deidra was still sleeping, purposely giving off her body heat and brushing it on Endell's light brown skin, which always soothed her and bring a smile to her face. She brought out her other Pokemon to feed them some berries she picked yesterday. She left some Razz berries by Deidra, for when she woke up, and went to the nearby pond to fill her water bottle. The next Route that led to Mauville was nothing but a stupid godforsaken sandstorm, so Endell had to stock up on as much water as she can.

When Deidra finally woke up, she stretched her lean body and her flawless golden fur glistened at the water's reflection. Endell double-checked the campsite and decided that they were set to go.

Now it was mid afternoon and Endell was surprised that she didn't see any trainers so far.

"Maybe they're too lazy to take the long way to Route 113". She said to Deidra with a smile. Deidra smiled and showed the expression of agreement. They talked to each other to pass the time.

It was hours since they saw a trainer and it was well in the evening. Endell grew suspicious at the short number of trainers in the road, and none of them even wanted to battle. A moment later, Deidra stopped dead in her tracks. Endell looked confused and asked.

"What's wrong, Deidra, did you see something?"

The Ninetales thrust her head forward, telling her to look forward. Endell looked straight ahead and her mouth dropped wide open. It was the mysterious figure from yesterday. He slowly approached the duo, reaching for a Pokeball from his belt. Deidra snarled even more than yesterday, then rashly released a flamethrower. The stranger quickly moved out of the way then grinned.

"That's a pretty aggressive Ninetales you have".

Endell narrowed her dark brown, almost black eyes then replied.

"She's aggressive for a reason. Now get out of the way, freak. I'm in a hurry".

The stranger laughed and said.

"Freak? My, my! What a feisty little trainer you are!"

"Shut up! You want to battle or what?!"

"Fine. But don't call me 'freak', ok?".

"Then you must have a name... Well?"

He completely ignored Endell and threw the Pokeball in the air. It released an eerie glow while sending out what seemed to be a huge crab with a star on its forehead.

"Make yourself useful Crawdaunt. Rain Dance, now!".

Crawdaunt said nothing and commanded rain from the heavens. Seconds later it was pouring, soaking Deidra and Endell to the bone. Endell didn't like how the stranger talked to his Crawdaunt like that, or making it rain this hard.

"Deidra, let's start out with a Confuse Ray!"

Black blobs with a yellow outline soon appeared over Deidra's front leg, then unleashed it toward the crab. The blobs made contact with Crawdaunt, slowly seeping inside it's head. The stranger looked distressed.

"What is wrong with you?! Rock Slide, NOW!"

The Crawdaunt just ran to a wall, badly hurting itself, but it still caused a massive landslide of boulders toward Deidra.

"Protect, Deidra!"

But it was too late. Masses of boulders crashed onto Deidra, she yelped due to the pain. The pouring rain didn't make anything better by turning some of the dirt to filthy mud.

"Deidra! Try to get up!"

Miraculously, Deidra squirmed her way out of the rock tomb and was willing to battle more. Crawdaunt shook its head and locked its eyes to Deidra's, showing that it regained sanity. The man seemed to have liked Deidra in pain.

"Well? Don't just stand there! Night Slash!"

Crawdaunt's right claw turned pitch black, over-flowing with dark energy, running toward Deidra at an incredibly slow pace. With no effort what so ever Deidra moved out of the way and answered Endell's thought by boiling the air around her. The hot air caught on fire and circled around Deidra, catching every nearby drop of rain and evaporating it from thin air. After building enough fire, Deidra unleashed a powerful Heat Wave that crashed onto Crawdaunt. The attack wasn't as strong as usual because of the rain which seemed to last forever. The stranger's temper was hotter than that Heat Wave.

"Ugh! You stupid piece of meat! Stop wasting my time and use Crabhammer!"

It took a while for Crawdaunt to recover from that heat wave, but it successfully landed a Crabhammer on Deidra. The spiteful rain, the horribly painful Rock Slide, and a direct Crabhammer finally took Deidra to the ground in defeat. Endell ran up to Deidra, assuring that she did her best and put up a good fight.

Then out of nowhere a Sludge Bomb landed on Deidra, making her shriek in pain.

"Hey! The battle's over! You won!"

Ignoring Endell, he ordered his Crawdaunt. "Waterfall."

The crab approached Deidra at an incredibly fast pace, delivering a bone-crushing Waterfall. Deidra couldn't take another hit like that.

"Stop! I said you won! Please, stop!"

"Blizzard".

Every drop of rain turned to ice, every blade of grass turned bitterly cold, and the air turned to a powdery snow. All of the frozen rain drops pelted Deidra, the cold grass froze her paws, and her tears were frozen solid and fell to the ground. Endell started to cry at a horrible sight; her best friend dying right in front of her eyes.

"I beg of you, please stop... stop killing my Ninetales!"

The stranger just cracked a familiar grin. Endell's eye's widened, whispering.

"No..."

"Crabhammer. One last time".

Crawdaunt's right claw turned to water, but since the blizzard was still whirling, it was more of an ice punch. In less than a second the final blow made contact with Deidra's head, cracking her skull. Deidra screamed so loud far away Swellow flew off into the distance.

"DEIDRA!!"

"Well that was a nice battle."

"What!?! my Ninetales, it's about to DIE!!"

"That's why it was fun!"

"YOU MONSTER!!"

"Am I?"

The stranger looked at Deidra, who was throwing up blood and laughed.

"Pathetic weakling. Can't handle a little battle? HAHAHA!!!"

Endell was furious at the man.

"That was no battle!! It's murder!!"

He just walked away and his laughter never stopped, just like the rain, washing away Deidra's blood.

It was midnight by now and Endell never took her eyes off of Deidra for one second. Endell kept saying that she'll be alright, that she'll make it through this. She felt Deidra's neck, it was warm, the kind of warm that Endell felt every morning. But all too quickly her neck turned cold, cold as that blizzard, Endell couldn't feel pulses anywhere. Deidra, who always had her eyes on her master, her best friend, her only reason of existence, finally couldn't keep eye contact anymore. Endell's eyesight went blurry with tears and she found her self sobbing, her tears mixing with the rain and Deidra's blood. Deidra rested her cold head on the colder grass and slowly closed her eyes. At that moment the spiritual tie broke. Forever...

Wow, first fanfic? It's really good and really sad. At any rate, I can't wait to read more. Undying Devotion indeed. It'll be really interesting to see how the title fits. ^^

This is amazingly written for a first fanfic, and extremely interesting as well. I'm definitely hooked. Only thing I'd recommend is to maybe add some details when the two characters are conversing, that part seemed a bit rushed and would sound better if you talked about how they were standing and other little things like that. Anyways, I really love this and can't wait for the next chapter!

D: ;_;

This is amazing for a first. Keep it up!

BTW, anyone else notice how the current trend of Fics right now is dark stories?

I actually quite like it. The thing that I liked the most was that it didn't start with the cliché "Oh look, I'm a new trainer" plotline. It's actually quite refreshing to read a story that doesn't start like that.

The only thing I'd watch out for is the odd grammatical mistake, but yesh. I did enjoy reading it.

This one is quite long but explains Endell's and Deidra's past. Hope this is as good as the previous one if not better. :)
~Chapter 2~

"...She was blessed, and a good friend to my daughter."

The dead silence in the cemetery finally ceased as Endell's father departed the podium. Endell and her mother rose from their hard wooden bench when Endell's father joined them. She was quiet the whole time when they were in Lilycove City, not even smiling to her greeting aunts and uncles. She was the only one left in the cemetery, staring at a cold, hard tombstone that engraved, "Here lies Deidra, a blessed Ninetales and a good friend." Endell cried every time she finished reading that statement. She crouched to her knees and raised her hand to touch the tombstone and said.

"You don't deserve this... you didn't do anything bad... you didn't hurt anybody... in fact you protected people who needed it... death shouldn't be your reward..."

Endell took an old chew toy from her jacket and looked at it, softly squishing it until it made a squeaking sound. She exchanged glances between the chew toy and the tombstone, finally saying.

"I remember when I bought this for you... you loved it so much I always found it in your mouth, squeezing it between your teeth until it squeaked, smiling every time you released your grip..."

Tears started to form below Endell's eyes again, trying to finish her previous sentence.

"You looked so innocent with this chew toy... You don't deserve to die!"

A flood of tears poured from her eyes down her cheeks to the tip of her chin, crashing down on the chew toy and the tall, grass like a waterfall. Her sounds of sobbing echoed through the eerie floors of Mt. Pyre. Ever since Deidra died Endell protected her only physical tie to her; the chew toy.

It was hours after Endell stopped mourning and just then she heard soft, stealthy footsteps not far from her. Endell's heart jumped and thought the worst. Was it a Sabeleye, slowly approaching behind Endell with that wicked smile and a Shadow Claw waiting to deal a fatal blow? Or a Meditite, staring at Endell's back and choking her using Psychic?

The cause of the sound finally came into view; it was a wild Vulpix, lost and not knowing where to go. Endell looked at the chew toy and then back to the Vulpix. All of the sudden memories of Deidra overflowed her mind.

----------

"... I know that's not a lot. I'll bring more next time."

A child's voice said to a sick Vulpix. Laying right next to it, she reached out her warm, friendly hand to stroke it's glimmering red curly fur over and over again until it was able to sleep. Sounds of rustling grass was approaching a middle-classed house with stone covering all four walls. The front of the house had a beautiful garden that grew many kinds of berries and plants.

The front door opened quickly and quietly and closed without making a sound. The child was hoping that she wouldn't wake her parents at such a late hour, unfortunately her mother, who was named Samantha, was in the kitchen, reading a book. She looked up and saw her six year old daughter, frozen in fear. She calmly stood up from her chair and slowly went to the girl, saying in her soft voice.

"Endell, what are you doing up so late?"

Endell tried to make a good excuse with all of her brain power.

"I um... was just taking a walk around the Pewter City park."

"At two in the morning?"

"Um... well... yeah!"

Samantha looked distressed, but still kept her tone soft and calm.

"That's nice. Now tell me why you're up so late."

Well, lying didn't work. Endell sighed and said said in a defeated voice.

"Well, I saw a Pokemon hurt not far from our house. So I came and helped however I could."

Samantha's face of distress softened into a smile.

"That was very thoughtful of you, but you still shouldn't be up this late. Can I see it?"

Endell's eyes widened. For some reason showing her mom Vulpix was a bad idea.

"Erm... well I'm not sure if its comfortable with more than one person around her so-"

Endell's mother ignored her and went outside, Endell following close behind her.

As soon as they both were outside of their house, Samantha turned to Endell, asking.

"Do you remember where it was?"

Endell pointed to some bushes not far from their house. She tried to change her mind.

"But I think its afraid of more than one person around it."

Once again ignoring her she headed to the bushes in a rather quick pace, swinging her arms back and forth. Samantha moved a couple of bushes out of her sight to reveal a well made bed of straw and grass. Beside it was crumbs of bread, stems of berries, and a small cup with only a few drops of water left in it. Endell finally caught up, saw the empty straw bed, and gasped in horror. Samantha was more worried than ever. She turned to Endell and said while glaring at her.

"Endell, are you lying to me... again?"

Endell was surprised at the question.

"N-no! Why would I lie about something this serious?"

"Endell, I don't have time for your little games."

Tears started to form around Endell's eyes.

"But its in danger! Its sick and only a baby!"

Samantha struck her own forehead with her hand.

"No! Bed! Now!"

Samantha sharply pointed to her house, instructing Endell to go that direction. As soon as she started walking, Samantha quickly turned around to walk at the same direction. Endell looked back at the empty bed and glared at her mother. The kitchen light was still on. As Samantha went to turn it off, she told Endell.

"Listen to me; you are not to go after that Pokemon, you understand?"

Endell did not reply. Giving her mother one last glare she ran up the stairs to her room. Samantha stormed right behind her, still careful not to wake her husband from his eternal slumber. Endell stopped as soon as she was in her room. As she was closing her door, Samantha stopped it, swung it back open with a slam and grabbed Endell by her arm.

"Do you understand?" She repeated with a stern voice.

Endell's eyes narrowed and jerked back her arm from her mother's grip.

"Whatever." She turned to lay in her bed, but another grab by Samantha's arm drew her back.

"You do NOT talk to me like that! Now I trust that you won't go after that Pokemon."

She released her grip and softly closed the partially broken door. Endell quickly climbed to her bed and thought if she should go out and find Vulpix or not. That moment she heard shuffling under her bed. Her heart jumped and her eyes widened in fear. She squirmed to the end of her bed, and jumped away from it as she can. Endell made a small thump in the carpet, but thought it wasn't loud enough to wake her mom. Armed with her pillow, she ducked beside the bottom of her bed. It was very hard for Endell to see, but was certain something was under her bed. She couldn't decipher what it looked like, only that it was red.

----------

Even outside of Mt. Pyre the sky was black and blue. Endell looked up at the full moon shining its mysterious light down at her and to the huge rock suspended in space. She sighed as she took out a Pokeball from her sweater. The bright red light from the Pokeball reveled a Skarmory, stretching his steel blades for wings and crying out to the night sky.

"Alright, Argorok, Lilycove is a few days of driving away. I know you can fly pretty fast so let's try getting to Lilycove in three days."

Argorok nodded as Endell climbed onto his back. In seconds flat they shot up into the air and over Route 122.

----------

"...Okay, you can stay here, but my mommy can't find you here, ok?"

Vulpix looked up to Endell with a frown. Endell looked at it with confusion, but found out why. She giggled softly and stroked her fur.

"It's okay if you hid under my bed. Yeah, you scared me a little but at least you weren't out there in the mountains where it's dangerous... Are you still sick?"

Vulpix shook her head with a smile and raised her front paw to touch Endell's hand. The paw wasn't rough as she expected, to her surprise it was rather soft. Endell smiled as well and took her paw to her own hand. The paw itself was warm, which comforted Endell. It struck her weird, though. When she was tending Vulpix she wasn't warm like this at all. She even looked scared when she fed her, but Endell knows that by now she won Vulpix's trust.

Endell picked up Vulpix and hugged her gently. Vulpix rested her head on Endell's shoulder and drifted off to sleep with a smile. Endell carried her to her closet, found a couple of blankets and set her on them. She petted Vulpix's warm fur, just like when they were in the bushes. She might get used to this, but that means that she has to keep a big secret from her mother. As Endell prepared to go to sleep herself, she went back to Vulpix, petted her once more and asked.

"Does this mean where're friends?"

Vulpix said nothing for awhile, but then sighed in contentment. Endell smiled, saying.

"Where're gonna best friends, Vulpix, I know it! …. Well now that I think about it, I should give you a name."

Endell thought pretty hard for the perfect name. A half hour later she drifted off to sleep still thinking of a name.

"Deidra...."

Still sleeping, she smiled at the name. She couldn't wait to tell Vulpix. Despite that she didn't know what would happen later on. That night... That was the night their friendship was set in motion.

----------

She has the perfect plan, but how is she going to tell her? Find a physical form? Ha! No non-ghost Pokemon can do that. Maybe.... Through a physical tie! But what? And how?

"I need to find a way manifest..."

"You looked so innocent with this chew toy... You don't deserve to die!"

"Through that chew toy!"

"Well, you're not as dumb as you look!"

"What... Who are you?"

"..."

"W-who are you!?"

"Pathetic weakling. Can't handle a little battle? Hehehe..."

"What did you say?! Who are you?"

"I am not him. I wouldn't even scratch a Wurmple! But he would. He killed you... separated you from Endell! He can't just walk away from that. You can't lead Endell into swirling depression and just forget about it!"

"I know I can't, but what can I do about it!? I'm dead!"

"Lead Endell to him... kill him... make him suffer!"

"How!?"

"Do you truly seek revenge?"

"No! Get out of my mind!"

"'I beg of you, please stop... stop killing my Ninetales!'"

" I said no!"

"'Does this mean where're friends?'"

"Stop it!"

"Worthless insect."

"ARGH!"

"I don't need to ask again."

"…No..."

"Hmph! Finally! Gather enough anger and revenge. Weigh it all on that meat. Everything else comes easy after that!"

Enraged Deidra's spirit desperately looked for a way to find a physical form. Through the chew toy.... Finally finding it in Endell's grasp while she was flying on Argorok, she went inside the squeaky doll. Endell suddenly felt a familiar presence.

"Deidra? Deidra! Where are you?!"

She sat still silently waiting for an answer. The only reply was the rushing wind on her face. Endell sighed in sadness. Hours later Endell told Argorok to land. She set up her sleeping bag and quickly fell to sleep, no longer feeling Deidra's presence, but the old toy clutched in her hand.
