Lucian, Ray and Byron took the stage, along with a mediator who picked up a microphone and began to speak:
"May I have your attention , please! The debate between Lucian of the elite four, and Byron, gym leader of Canalave City, will now commence - the issue at hand, as I'm sure you all know, being that of evil teams. Lucian will arguing for the rehabilitation of evil team members, whereas Byron will be arguing for their permanent incarceration. In hosting this public event, the city of Veilstone hopes that its citizens will be able acquire an informed and multi-sided understanding of the issue, so that we will be able to make better decisions together, moving forward. So, without further adieu: here's Byron, with his opening remarks."
The crowd applauded as the burgundy-haired gym leader took to the stage. His attire was far less formal than Lucian's and Ray's: he wore a casual white button-up and grey khakis, looking very working-class.
"Men and women of Sinnoh! I have to admit, the fact that we're even having this debate baffles me: I thought that the permanent incarceration of those who threaten this great region that we are blessed to live in would be a given! But alas, there seem to be non-patriots among us, confounded by the impracticable babblings of ivory-tower intellectuals like Lucian here... But no matter: I won't rest until every last one of you can see the issue for what it really is! Let me open by telling you a bit about myself:
I grew up poor too, you know - just as poor, if not poorer, than any team Galactic member, team Rocket member, what have you. But you know what I did? instead of joining an evil team I got an honest job working in the mines! I worked my ass off and made myself into the man you see standing before you today, from the ground up! All this talk of 'lack of opportunity' for those in dire socioeconomic circumstances is, frankly, nonsense; anyone who knows the meaning of hard work can succeed in this great region! Sinnoh has no need for deadbeats who turn to crime instead of sorting themselves out!"
Byron's words were met with thunderous applause, and Ray gulped nervously as prepared to speak next.
"Don't worry, Ray - you'll do great!" Lucian gave him a reassuring smile.
"Okay, okay, settle down!" the mediator attempted to calm the crowd. "Up next we have a special guest, Ray Montag, who will be making Lucian's opening remarks. For those of you who don't know: Ray is an ex evil team member, of several evil teams... but has since changed his ways, and now shows great promise as an upcoming orator, social critic, and upstanding citizen in general. Would you please welcome him to the stage!"
The audience clapped for Ray as he walked out, but not as vigorously as they did for Byron... Ray took the microphone and began to speak:
"Ladies and gentleman, please listen to me when I tell you that the alienating rhetoric employed by Byron is precisely what gives rise to evil teams in the first place; if we do not acknowledge this, then I am afraid we will be unable to make any progress on the issue. Byron's position is predicated on the assumption that everyone in dire socioeconomic circumstances has the same opportunities available to them, but this is simply not that case - especially given the the varying levels of social stigmatization that exist independently of economic status - but that is something that Lucian will elaborate on further in the debate. In the meantime, I think that the sheer hopelessness experienced by evil team members in current society can be clearly evinced by just how radical, and often apocalyptic, their goals are: Rocket, Magma, Plasma, and most recently Tempest advocating for a total overhaul of the political system, and in Magma's case even nature itself; and Aqua, Galactic, and Flare advocating for the literal destruction of the world as we know it. Do you really think that people would be driven to such unfathomable extremes if there were other options available to them? Of course not... a job mining would be a helluva lot easier, if they could get one. But someone who is willing to wipe out space and time is someone who has exhausted every other option available to them. That is why we need certain reforms in the legal system, prioritizing community service and rehabilitation over permanent incarceration, and-"
All of a sudden an explosion rang out through the debate hall and numerous people wearing Team Galactic uniforms flooded into the room from several holes in the walls. In addition several people in the audience jumped to their feet and joined them, as if they knew the attack was going to happen...
"Time to reclaim our old base!" an admin, leading the charge, shouted gleefully. "May Cyrus's spirit live on forever!"
People in the crowd began to panic, and the debate hall was rapidly reduced to bedlam. Galactic grunts fired at fleeing civilians with their pokemon indiscriminately as they pushed deeper into the room...
Lucian looked on with a sad expression:
"Their timing couldn't have been any worse..." he sighed to himself. "Bronzong, I'm in need of your assistance!" he said as he sent out the bell pokemon.
"Aha, I told you! They can't be trusted!" Byron exclaimed triumphantly, and he sent out his Bastiodon.
Ray just stood there stunned for a moment before reaching for Typhlosion's pokeball.
