Dollhouses and Battles

“Sir, please I’m sure this isn’t-”, Curt attempt at reasoning with the man where shot down with a single glare from the powerful lord. Curt had gone up against his fair share of powerful people and Pokemon alike, but something about Lord Kyandi seemed unearthly, un-human even.

“A-a-a-alright then, sir”, Curt said, failing to hide how much the Lord intimidated him. It wasn’t even a question, Curt wasn’t good at reading people, but even he could tell that Lord Kyandi intended to have him arrested and jailed if he refused, or if he lost. His offering of money was just a formality to make it seem like Curt had a choice in the matter, and Curt didn’t count going to jail as a choice.

“Good, let's get on with the battle”, Lord Kyandi said as he began to takes his place on the side lines, before turning to Curt one last time, ”And do be sure to do your best to emerge victorious, it would be insulting to both of you if my son were to snatch an easy victory”.

Suppressing a gulp, Curt began to evaluate his Pokemon. He couldn’t take any chances with this, Embertail and Raviel were the only two Pokemon with him at the moment. Though Marzipan hadn’t even started his journey yet, neither he or his Gourgiest (Jack, was what Marzipan call him?) appeared to be push-overs.

“’Raviel’, do you think you can help get us out of this mess?”, Curt said as he knelt down beside the Jolteon. Normally Embertail would have been Curts first pick, especially against a grass type, but Embertail had tiered himself out working on their escape route all day while all Raviel did was hide in the bushes. It was subtle, but you could faintly see that their flee from the law took more out of Embertail then it should have, he had been running around all day, and he needed rest.

“RAEH RAEH!”, the Lightning Pokemon cried, letting his friend know he was ready for battle. Raviel didn’t get a chance to try shorting-out the mansions security systems like they originally planned, so he still had plenty of energy left in him. After getting a quick cheer of encouragement from Embertail, Raviel took his place between Curt and his opponent, ready for the battle to start. Despite the type disadvantage, Raviel still had some tricks hidden up his proverbial sleeve, they just had to be smart about using them.

Though Raviel was certainly a brave Pokemon, he could be a little fool-hardy at time, and THAT had gotten him into trouble more than once. Still, the fierce glare on Raviels face gave Curt reassurance that the Lightning Pokemon knew exactly how much was riding on this match. They both knew that it wasn't going to be an easy battle, he was certain Marzipan and Jack were just as determined to win as they were, and they also had just as much to lose.

Adair only smirked as the small Pokemon roared out. Maybe it was the prospect of losing a troublesome son, or the fact he just enjoyed seeing people in conflict, but no matter the cause his cold eyes only stared at Marz in expectation as he pulled out a pocket watch. The glassy surface reflected the moonlight back onto his face, its glow creating the image of a human Gengar. "Eleven twenty-eight..." Adair's deep voice was nothing more than a mutter as he looked back at the two. "You both have till midnight to proclaim a winner." His smile darkened as he went back to the small silver watch in his hands. "I suggest you both start."

Marz hadn't said a thing since his father made his attendance known. Fear had taken over and unlike most people, and Pokemon, instead of fighting or fleeing he froze. It even felt like his heart had turned into a stone stature by the way it paused, but now it felt like a Combee hive was living in his chest as the command to fight jump started his ticker in such a way. Taking one last look over at Cassie and Nine, a heavy sigh escaped Marz's lips as he looked at Curt. Nothing more than a pure bitter resentment came upon his face. "Alright then, Jack." Even his voice turned into a harsh tone that had his Gourgeist shuddering in anticipation. "Get ready."

Jack only roared once more as he steeped out from behind Ryu. Large hands already going up as the ghost Type glared at Raviel. A look of pure heated intensity radiated off of the shiny as he enjoyed the calm happily. Marz smirked in a fashion similar to his father as he pointed at the Jolteon with cold malice. "Will' O Wisp and then Leech Seed right now." Jack only laughed as a plume of dark flames and seedlings floated around his large form. Then, they were gone. Having been sent off directly in Raviel's path with quick speed.

"I will not lose." Marz's voice was harder than any Steelix's skin. Even his eyes seemed to turn into a much darker cobalt as the blond bit the inside of his cheek.

It was chilling. The night, and the lord standing before them. If anything, he made the night colder. With just a single word, the world was silence. People became statues, and Pokemon fled. Even Nine and Ryu seemed unsettled by him. Surely, her Froslass would be jealous. The harsh looks and stabbing words Adair threw at her knocked the shell of a hollow heart. She felt nothing. She hadn't felt anything in a long time, and the more reality sank in, the more everything went back to normal. Cassie, however, felt no fear for this man towering in her presence. Being in the presence of an intimidating, pressuring authority figure without shriveling under their gaze was just something she'd adapted to. And that was by ripping apart the strings that connected to her heart. To put logic and common sense above everything else, so that all the emotional pain and suffering she endured made sense. So she could learn from them. And as usual, she begrudgingly felt grateful for the way she'd been raised by her mother.

However, the young woman knew better than to push her luck any further. She'd been fortunate enough not to be accused of any crimes at all, when she knew she'd committed at least two. The dark haired trainer resigned herself to the sidelines, watching the blasphemy before her with conflicted feelings. Marz and Curt were to battle. The winner earns full pardons for the mistakes they've made that night. Herself? She was the mistake Marz was battling to erase. A mistake. The stake of reality sunk a bit deeper into her brain, and she felt her heart slowly turn to stone. Heavy. Dry. Brittle. Millions of what ifs swiveled in her head, among them being how the situation would be if she'd returned to the ball with Marz instead of spiriting him away from it. If she never came out to the balcony. If she never came to the ball at all. Cassie gazed at the battle with empty eyes and pondered this deeply, though she knew it would do no one any good. Curt didn't deserve to be jailed, and Marz didn't deserve to be booted from his family for something she did. None of the two men deserved what was coming to them, and yet her, the only person who deserved any punishment, was sitting pretty and out of harms way.

If she hadn't showed up at all, at least one of them would be safe and sound.

“Midnight, of course, it’s always Midnight”, Curt thought as he processed Lord Kyandi’s words, “but why bother giving us a time limit, does he just want to get back to the party, or does he have some ulterior motive?” Curt tried to wrap his head around the Lord’s reasoning for this, maybe he was just over-thinking it, Curt truly believed the man had some motivation behind the time limit, he just couldn’t guess what.

Curt looked to Marzipan to see if he could gather some sort of idea from the young lords expression about his fathers action. All he got from Marzipan was a cold glare that practically sent shivers down his spine, years of learning how to hide his thoughts and feelings from people were forsaken then and there so Marzipan could let Curt know one thing:

He hated him.

It was funny, all Curt had done to him was ask who he was…well, that and accidentally interrupt a “moment” between him and Cassie, everything else that happened to him was simply due to coincidence. Marzipan hated Curt, and all it took was him being in the right place at the wrong time. Curt cast a quick glance at Cassie maybe to try and get a sign of support or reassurance, but there was no emotion on her face what so ever. Whatever was running through her mind, it was a mystery to him.

A load roar from Jack let Curt know that the battle was about to begin. He took a quick breath to calm himself and prepared himself for what was to come. Marzipan may have just officially been made a trainer, but one look in his eye's told Curt he was not going to be a push-over.

"Will' O Wisp and then Leech Seed right now!”

“So that’s how he’s starting the battle, eh”, Curt though, “with two moves that focused solely on causing stat affliction”. It was an admittedly smart strategy, to start a battle off by trying to cripple your opponent right from the get-go, and both moves were launched at admirable speeds. It didn’t matter how much strength your Pokemon had if they were exhausted and covered in wounds. Marzipan was determined, that glare in his eye's was obvious, and it was apparent that his Pokemon shared it's trainers passion. However, Curt noticed he made one mistake in his attack order.

“Raviel Dodge Dig, now!”, Curt said as Raviel rapidly burrowed into the ground, the Manor’s well-tended to fields made the ground soft and malleable. Normally, dig wouldn’t have been a very good option for a non-ground type Pokemon to use to dodge an attack, but Raviel was a quick Pokemon and Will-O-Wisp was known to be inaccurate, especially if used in haste. Raviel began digging the second Jack launched his attacks, Curts hunch was correct, The Gourd Pokemon put all his effort into firing the attack as quickly as possible and didn't bother taking much time to aim, the result was a Will-O-Wisp that was fired just a little too soon and was aimed a little too high. The flames just missed Raviel as he buried under the soil, the Leech Seed soon followed the Will-O-Wisp, scattering across the area Raviel was just a moment ago.

That was one of the first tricks they worked on, back when Raviel was just an Eevee, a “dodge” Dig they called it, as silly as the name was, it was a handy way to avoid attack. Using Dig to dodge may take more stamina out of him then just leaping out of the way, but there were still advantages to using it. Raviel wasn’t very deep underground, and Jack was on alert, so he couldn’t get close to the Gourd Pokemon without the small tremors tipping Jack off to his location. Still, Raviel’s close proximity to the surface meant he could pop out almost instantly to launch a surprise attack, all he had to do was get into position.

While Raviel was tunneling through the ground, Curt mulled over what to do next, he noticed how quickly Jack put himself on it's guard, he even began to survey the area around him. This made it fairly clear to Curt that this wasn't the first time Marzipan and Jack had seen an opponent use dig to dodge and launch a counter attack. They knew what was coming next, and they were already preparing for it.

“I'm guessing this isn't the first time someone's managed pulled this trick on you, using Dig to dodge your attacks?", Curt pipped up, there was no malice or fierceness in his voice, like the recent hostilities between them were from a different life.

"Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad start, trying to burn Raviel right at the beginning, but I think you tried to have Jack do a little to much. I assume you launched Will-O-Wisp first because you wanted to avoid the risk of burning the Leech Seed off Raviel, trying to burn him and drain his energy in one go, right?”, Curt said to Marzipan, completely oblivious to the context of what he was doing.

The words flowed out of Curts mouth without him even thinking about the situation or the context the words held. He wasn’t sure why he was trying to give Marzipan advice, especially during a battle that could result in him losing everything if he lost. Maybe he wanted to get under the nobles skin and make him frustrated by critiquing his battling style, or maybe he was saying this out of a genuine sense of guilt for trying to steal his families heirloom(even though he felt somewhat justified in trying to take it), or maybe he just felt bad that his actions tonight might cost the man his title, or maybe Curt was just an idiot.

Whatever the reason, Curt continued talking…

“Again, it's a good plan, but this early in the match, and against a fast Pokemon like a Jolteon, It might have been better if you had Jack focus his energy on trying to land just one of the attacks on Raviel first, and then trying to inflict the other one on him...", Curt trailed off as he began to realize what he was doing.

"But, uh, t-that's just my opinion, j-just forget I said anything…”, Curt finished while scratching the back of his head. The awkwardness of what he had said just dawned on him, giving advice to an opponent during a battle, especially one with such high stakes, was stupid to say the least. Not to mention that it could be considered offensive for a person to start blurting out advice in the middle of a battle.

The only thing Marzipan knew about Curt was that he hated him, he wanted him thrown in jail and stripped of everything he ever owned, but still, Curt, at the moment, didn't feel any ill-will against the man, he wasn't even (intentionally) trying to insult him with his little mid-battle rant. Why Curt felt the need to use the brief calm in the battle to give Marzipan his two cents was a mystery, even to him. There was just something about Marzipans cold glare that set him off.

“Alright Raviel, let's shower them with Pin Missile”, Curt yelled, shoving those thoughts to the back of his mind and regaining his composure. The moment the word “Missile” left his lips did Raviel pop out of the ground several feet away from where he started digging. The Lightning Pokémon let out a quick roar as his spikes stood on end and shifted forward, pointing towards Jack. His quills almost looked like bristling hair as a large number of tiny, needle-like projectiles launched from his spikes directly at Jack.

Raviel may not have been able to get close to his opponent, but that didn’t matter right now. Pin Missile may draw from a Pokémon’s physical strength, but it was still a long-range move, and a Bug-type move at that. Still, if the hard look in Marzipans eye's told him anything, it's that they were expecting this, further fueling Curt's suspicion that they saw this trick before. Marzipan maybe a new Pokemon Trainer, but Pokemon were certainly not new to him.

Marz's fist was clenched tightly. Anger was completely enveloping the heir as he listened to Curt's insulting advice in the middle of their battle. He didn't even care about the time restraint that had been set upon him, no Jack could deal with having a few moments to actually battle. Having been a contest Pokemon in the past, the Gourgeist was use to having to make an opponent faint in a certain time frame.

Pin Missile didn't even seem to faze Jack. It was almost like he was taking a shower of leaves as he absorbed the attack. The look of pain did cross the Gourgeist's features for a moment before he shook his head. A smile graced Jack's face as he stared at the electric Type.

"It's not, no, but that was from a person's who's company I enjoy far more than your own." Marz's voice was tight, nearly to the point that he was about to allow the seams of a false facade to pop off. "In case you didn't know, Gourgeist are special attack and defense Pokemon. I would recommend that you review your Pokemon potentials and what to train them in." Marz sighed heavily as Jack just taunted and laughed at Curt. It was like the ghost Type was trying to just mock him as it formed a small, purplish ball of energy within its palm. "Now, distract the little rat with Shadow Ball!"

Jack smiled a large, malicious grin as he fired the shadowy blob right at Raviel's feet. The mass of energy shot the ground around them. A shower of mud and grass hid him as Marz stared at Curt. His eyes the only thing visible from the curtain he created. "Phantom Force." It was a simple order, and it was one Jack listened to. His large form already vanishing as he gave a loud cry of his name to the opposing team.

Adair only watched with interested eyes. The look of curiosity and disappointment crossing his face as he looked at Curt. If he couldn't win this simple battle, than he was going to help him out a bit. It didn't take much for Genesis to come out and hide among the shadows playing along the field. The Gengar's smile growing wide as he noticed Jack. Adair only looked at the shadow Pokemon and gave a slight nod.

The lord would only allow this battle to go on for so long before he took matters into his own hands.

"Oh, Curt...." The dark haired trainer could only pinch the bridge of her nose at her friend's habits. Ryu gave a similar motion, pressing his paw against his head while Nine shook his. Occasionally Curt was just too nice for his own good, but giving advice in a battle where the stakes are as high as they were now? It was the worst possible thing to do for a number of reasons, even if she knew his true intentions; he simply meant well. But anger had enveloped around Marz like a shroud of dark aura, and it never did anyone any good if they battled in anger.

However, she simply wet her throat. Cassie gazed at Adair warily, owning a Lucario made her rather sensitive towards people's energy, and even with her dull, limited ability, she could feel his ill intentions. All of a sudden, Ryu perked back up, his eyes set to the shadows where a silhouette of a Gengar, much like the one carved as the centerpiece of the fountain, wandered. Cassie's eyes too traveled there, seeing the whites of its eyes and teeth gleaming with mischief. "Ryu."

With a single leap, the Lucario was in front of the Gengar, standing proud and tall before it with Shadow Claw in one paw, and Shadow Ball in the other. Meanwhile, Cassie approached Adair, Nine eying the guards cautiously. "Lord Kyandi, you are aware that universal battle rules strictly prohibit outside intervention, and otherwise battle outcomes are irrelevant." She said this with the finesse of a lawyer, sharp gray eyes piercing into eyes that Marz shared.

"Lady Michaels, I've absolutely no idea what you're going on about." He spat, not even sparing her a single glance.

"I'm going on about your Gengar. In the shadows. My Lucario has him. I'd like to keep the odds of the battle as they are." Her words were steady, but she knew she crossing lines that should not even be tread upon.

"And who are you to tell me what I can and cannot do in my own home? You've done more than enough damage on your own. We're you trying to kidnap my son, Miss Michaels? It's so easy to throw you in deeper than you already are. I hope you realize that." Finally his eyes shifted, and the force of his gaze hit her like an Aura Sphere. Cassie was suddenly aware of how small she was, and began to take steps back. "Clearly your parents never taught you any manners, so I'll do them a favor and do just that. Don't meddle where you're not welcome."

His words laced with venom, and she could taste it on her tongue just moments before a mere sentence changed everything. "This woman has sent her Lucario to sabotage the battle. Apprehend her."

Suddenly, big, rough hands clamped her mouth, stiffling the scream of pain that came when the guard that grabbed her jabbed a tazer into her side. It felt like a full on Thunderbolt, and her vision became blurry in a matter of seconds. Nine boiled with anger and shot Flamethrower at the guards, attempting to roast them for what they've done. Ryu could hear his trainer's muffled scream and was rocketing back to the scene where he punched the lights out of the guard that had her. In his arms, Cassie blacked out.

The sound of struggle and loud cries was enough for Marz to look away from the battle. His blue eyes already going over to Cassie's form, the sight of her unconscious body being held by Ryu made him leave the spot he was meant to stand in. A burning sensation licked at his cheeks and his hands as he ran over. Nine's Flamethrower grazed over the entire field as Marz only looked at the knocked out beauty and then his father. The collected stare in his eyes made the blonde take a step back before he moved forward again. A cool anger wrapping itself along the blond's throat as he spoke out. "What's the meaning of this?!" Grabbing at the jacket his father wore. "Cassie wasn't doing anything!"

Adair's stern face twisted with rage at the impudence his son was showing. His hand already going out and slapping the boy's face, hard. The night's chilled air only made a stinging sensation all the more stronger as he hissed at his son. "Enough of that." Cold words only slathered the cut one of Adair's rings had made as he towered over the struck Marz. "I will not be humiliated and disrespected at the same time, child." The word 'child' was enough to have his heir backing down as the man straightened his tie out. "Now, I suggest you go back to battling. Your title depends on it."

Maybe it was the painful discipline, or the fact the young noble had had enough of everything. Marz wasn't quite sure either way, but he was sure that he was done. He made this clear as he stood up straight, the line of blood trickling down his skin did nothing for him as glared at his father. "No." The word was enough to even have Genesis and Jack freeze right on the spot. Both Pokemon's smiles slowly turning into looks of horror as they looked over at Marz and Adair. "I'm done having to do what you tell me to. I'm not," The look in his blue eyes was one of pure sadness and even rebellion as he smeared the crimson liquid across his face. "I'm not a doll of yours to play with!"

It didn't help the dark rage brewing Adair's body at all. That much was clear by the way he struck his other cheek. Turn the other one, the lord was one for kindness even if his own son was turning into a disastrous child once more. "I know that, a true doll would be silent and pliant to what I want it to do!" Adair's voice was harsh as he looked at the fallen teen once more. "At least dolls could make me feel pride unlike you." Cold hearted words wore away at Marz slowly as he sat before his father. Genesis only looked away from the display as Jack cried out loudly. The large Gourgeist already trying to flee the battle to go check on his trainer.

The Gengar's Dark Pulse already forming as he looked and waited for an opportunity to strike the ghost Pokemon. A circle of pure shadow and emerging evil started to swarm around Genesis's hiding spot.

Curt’s brow furrowed when he heard Marzipans little “Rat” comment, it was one thing to insult him, it was another to insult his Pokémon.

“Raviel, match it with a Thunderbolt”, Curt instructed the Lightning Pokemon. Immediately sparks began to dance around Raviels spikes as he shot the lightning attack at the dark mass, using a little more force then necessary. Curt guess Raviel took a little offence at being called a rat, the resulting collision scattered dirt and grass everywhere.

“Phantom Force”, he heard Marzipan say as a follow up to the Shadow Ball attack. Like some sort of black magic, Curt and Raviel watched as the manically grinning pumpkin seemed to disappear into the shadows. Curt had to admit, Jack looked intimidating, in fact, he seemed to send a chill through Curts entire body

“Smart, Raviels speed isn’t worth much if he can’t locate his opponent”, Curt though, his anger at Marizpan’s pervious “Rat” comment beginning to fading. Still, the moves Jack was using told Curt thing exact thing he wanted to know about the Gourd Pokémon since he first saw it. Whatever species of Pokemon it was, it was clearly a Grass and Ghost type. Will-O-Wisp, Shadow Ball, Shadow Sneak, all well-known ghost type moves, that and the whole “Jack-O-Lantern” appearance helped tip him off. He had to suppress a shiver

“Raviel, try and stay calm, just keep an eye on your surrounding, and hold your fire till I say so”, Curt advised his partner, who returned the humans instructions with an incredulous look, “trust me”, Curt finished, giving Raviel a quick, but reassuring smile.

Returning his trainer assurance with a quick nod, Raviel began surveying every corner of the area for any signs of the Ghost Gourd, but Shadow Sneak was not so easily avoided. Raviel was only able to turn around just in time to see Jack upon him, his hair-like appendages already beginning to wrap themselves around Raviels feet in an attempt to immobilize him. He began to struggling, desperately fighting the urge to strike back at the Ghost Pokémon as it began dragging him closer to it, but Curt told him to wait, so that’s what Raviel did.

Curt’s eyes widened as he saw the Gourd Pokémon step from the shadows and begin entangling Raviel in its hair. It was not what he was expecting Jack to do, but they weren't done just yet. He just need to get his timing right, it was do or die for them, and they both knew it.

“Wait Raviel, just wait, Curt said trying to reassure his Pokemon, he was almost close enough, Alright, Raviel, SHADO-“. But Curts command was cut short by the sounds of another battle, only this one sounded more, chaotic.

Curt was able to turn his attention away from the battle just in time to see a member of the Kyandi security team strike Cassie with his taser, and what followed that was true mayhem. Ryu and Nine immediately returned the assault on their trainer by let losing their wraith on the security team. Meanwhile, Marzipan was heading to confront his father, leaving Jack to toss Raviel to the side and attempt to follow his trainer.

“W-wait, hold on, I-I, what the Hell are you doing”, Curt yelled as he approached Lord Kyandi, stepping between Jack and the noble, with Embertail following him closely. Marzipan was already confronting his father, Curt saw the young lord defy his father, but Lord Kyandi was not a man to be refused anything. He hadn’t seen much of the Lord before tonight, but something in his stomach told him that Marzipans defiance had made his father angrier than he had even been in a while.

“Kyandi, what’s going on, why the HELL did you have your security team assault Cassie”, Curt yelled at Lord Kyandi, his voice actually carrying some form of force to it, “I refuse to continue this battle until I have answers and Cassie is tended to!”. Most people who knew Curt would have been very surprised at the normally passive boy’s powerful outburst. Unfortunately, to Adair, Curt was just another angry commoner who needed a good shutting-up.

He brought his face so close to Curt’s, he could almost swear they should be touching, and locked his cold blue eyes with Curts’. He had already been pushed to his limit by his son’s outburst, and now a commoner, one not even native to the Kalos region, dared to speak to him in such a way?

“The only answer you should be looking for is how to make that worthless Jolteon of yours defeat my sons, less than worthless, Gourgiest,”, Lord Kyani said, almost whispering with his voice dripping with malice. it took all of Curt’s nerve to not break his gaze from Lord Kyani’s.

“Now, you are going to follow my pathetic excuse of a son back into the battlefield and crush him, or I will have you thrown in jail for the rest of your life”, Adair said, his voice not rising a single octave, before returning his attention to his son. Curt attempted to re-confront the man, until Embertail began to tug at his leg.

“Embertail, is this real-“, Curt began to say, before he was cut off by a loud burst of energy, quickly followed by an even louder howl of pain.

Raviel was a brave Jolteon and held fast when Curt told him to wait to attack, even as Jack was pulling him closer and closer to him mad, grinning face. But the moment the other fight started, Jack ended up unexpectedly chucking him half-way across the field. At first, Raviel thought it was some sort of attack, but after taking a second to stop his head from spinning, he began to see what the situation had become.

Everyone had forgotten about the battle, even Curt, even his opponent Jack, who wasn’t even looking in his general direction anymore, instead trying to find a way to get to his trainer. Raviel gritted his teeth as his eye’s formed a harsh, almost feral glare at the Gourd Pokemon, the act of turning your back to your opponent was insulting, to say the least. But the the thing that really set him off was seeing Lord Kyandi, his opponent's trainers father, threatening Curt. He didn't completely grasp what was going on yet, but it didn't matter, no one threatened his trainer!

This time, The Lightning Pokemon didn’t bother waiting for Curt’s orders. Raviel normally tried to fight fair in battles, but he had spent most of his life in the harsh back-allies of Celedon city, looking over his own little group of stray Pokemon before Curt, Embertail, and the rest of the team came along. If there was one thing he learned in those allies, it was that those who always fought fairly, often lost fairly.

Black, almost electric-like energy began to faintly crackle among Raviels spikes, as he let out a low growl. Raviel was smart enough to know he couldn't directly attack Lord Kyandi without getting Curt into even deeper trouble, but, despite whatever was going on, it didn't appear that anyone called the match yet. His spikes pointed forward as he took careful aim at the Gourgiest.

The Shadow Ball hit its mark.

Curt could only stare, wide eyed as the Gourd Pokémon fell face forward to the ground, even Embertails jaw slacked wide open. The Shadow Ball had struck Jack dead on from behind, and with his guard down, the already super-effective move did even more damage. To Jacks credit, he did make a solid effort to pick himself up, almost did to, but in the end, Raviels attack just did too much damage, and Jack ultimately collapsed back onto the ground.

Raviel just stood there for a moment, a cock-sure grin plastered on his face, before meandering back to Curt and Embertail, a little bit confused as to why they weren't thanking him for his surprise attack. The two could only stare at the scene before them, the sounds of approaching footsteps barely even registered to Curt or Embertail bewildered minds.

“Well, well, I take back what I said about the Jolteon, Raviel was it?”, Adiar said while throwing a wide, haunting grin at the Jolteon that made his fur stand on end,” a clever Pokemon indeed, knows when to take an opportunity when it presents itself, doesn’t he?” Lord Kyandi wasn’t laughing, but he might as well have been. Curt felt sick, and Kyandi’s complete attitude shift towards him only helped fueled that nausea.

This wasn’t right, Cassie had been attacked, Marzipan and Jack had both shifted their attention to help her, just like Curt and Embertail had. If Raviel didn’t get chucked across the field, then he’d probably be with them trying to face Kyandi down. Curt knew he couldn't accept this, he needed to ask Kyandi for a rematch, or something! They didn't win, everyone just got confused by the chaos and Raviel made a lucky shot, and even the Jolteon was beginning to think that he may have made the wrong move attacking Jack.

“T-that wasn’t fair, h-his back was turned, Jack was worried about his trainer, t-there was so much confusion that-, Curt could barely stutter out before Adiar cut him off once more.

“It was completely fair, it was Marzipans fault for letting his Pokémon drop his guard, if he had kept his focus on his Pokémon instead of Miss Micheals, he wouldn’t have lost”. Every word Kyandi said made Curt want to vomit. He didn’t even notice as Adiar reached into his pocket, pulled out a checkbook and, a few wisps of a pen later, handed Curt a check.

“For a job well done, now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to have a talk with my….son”, Kyandi said, the grin never leaving his face. Eventually, Curt came back to reality, and took a good, hard look at the check the noble gave him. The amount Kyandi gave him was more than enough to end his families financial trouble, to say the least. Lord Kyandi had paid him more than enough for his family to keep their house. Hell, they could probably pay off the damn thing, and maybe even have enough left over to fix it up a bit. All his families worries, over just like that.

“Well….here it is, this what we’ve been looking for”, Curt muttered as he stared at the check. Curt looked over at Cassie, still safe in Ryu’s arms with Nine guarding her, an intense glare in both Pokémon’s eye’s. Curt thought he saw Cassie coming to, but he couldn’t tell for sure. Then he looked at Marzipan, despite what Kyandi said, his son had astounding potential as a Pokémon trainer, more than Curt had that’s for sure. The way he managed to form a bonded with a Pokémon he just met was incredible, and never once did he lose his cool in battle, despite the fact that Curt was almost certain he never actually battled till tonight.

Curt grasped the check with both hands, he took a hard look at it, then he look at Embertail, and Embertail looked at him. The Charmander had been a part of Curt life, a part of Curts’ family, for as long as he could remember, and the Lizard Pokémon’s face told him all he needed.

Curt took one last look at the check, and then tore it in two.

Cassie woke to the sound of ripping paper. Her eyes moved about behind closed lids before they slid open to view a blurry world. She could feel someone's breath on her, and it was a familiar cadence. "R..yu..." Her voice came in a slurr, a wave of pain coursing from where she'd been tazed. "Ack..." With tingling fingers, she felt the area where her pain emenated from, feeling the moisture of blood where the electric assault burned her skin. 'Cassie, how are you feeling?' The petite trainer furrowed her brows and let out an agonized groan from an attempt to move. She was quickly secured to her original position by Ryu. "Awful... How do you endure attacks like this...?"

Nine had been subdued as well; being piled on by at least three men to keep him from burning down the entire garden. It made Cassie's blood boil. "Get- your filthy hands- off of him!" She exploded, silencing any sound that might've remained. Even Ryu flinched. Her body was shaking, and her eyes resembled hot iron as she glared at the men who hesitantly dissipated from her Ninetales. Once he was free, Nine quickly scampered back to his trainer, looking over her wound in displeasure. 'That will leave a scar.' He begrudgingly stated, for he knew how delicate his trainer was physically. 'Even with Heal Pulse.'

However, it was a move Ryu executed not long afterwards. A relieved sigh escaped Cassie as she began to sat up, confused at the chaos that remained of Curt and Marz's battle. "What... Happened...?" Her eyes traveled to Curt, who held pieces of ripped paper in his hands, and a conflicted look upon his face. She looked at him questioningly, before gazing at the Pokemon; Raviel still standing strong, and Jack, on the ground experiencing massive damage. "Marz..."

As if on instinct, her eyes flicked to the blond man now standing like a broken statue. Cassie struggled to sit up, gray irises unmoving from the blood that was smeared across Marz's raw cheeks. Her chest felt heavy. Extremely, severely heavy. Just as Adair had said, she dealt so much damage on her own. A claw ripped at her chest, and she found it ironic how, now that she was finally able to feel something, she didn't want to. Because the emotions inside her were so conflicting and confusing, it almost couldn't process in her all too logical mind. What's worse was that, it did, and both her head and her heart told her she was in the wrong.

"Help me up, Ryu, Nine." Sluggishly, the ace trainer pushed herself to a stand with both Pokemon on either side of her to keep her from toppling over. Her eyes remorseful, as she stared at Marz, and at Curt. She told them, "I'm sorry... This is my fault..." She swallowed, because her pride was choking her. "I shouldn't have gone on the balcony in the first place. None of this would've happened."

Marz only sat on the ground. His suit covered in dirt and grass as his nails dug into the area around him. Hot, burning tears started to roll down his cheeks as he just kept his head down like a good puppet should. It was only when he heard the sound of paper being ripped that he glanced up from his self loathing. Pieces of a torn check slowly fluttered onto the ground without a care on its own. Glazed eyes only looked up at Curt for a moment. Marz was in disbelief at the fact he would willingly tear up his prize for unmasking him. More so when the teen was in the presence of Adair.

Even when it was this stage of astonishment, Marz could clearly hear the sound of Cassie over the sound of walls crumbling down. The sound of her choking and blaming herself for something like this, it was enough to get the blond to slowly get to his feet. Millions of feelings ran rampant inside of him, regret, sadness, longing, all of them flew though out Marz's mind. However, he didn't blame them on Cassie as he made his way over to her. His hands already going to her shoulder in a gentle motion as he shook his head slowly at her. A look of pure honesty on his face as he tried to give a worn smile towards her.

"It's not your fault, this..." The ex-noble only tried to comfort the girl he felt something for, his voice wrecked with emotion as he continued. "This would've happened. I don't regret anything we did tonight... So, don't apologize for it. Please." Marz put on the happiest smile he could muster in this type of situation. Blood and tears having dried and cracking as he pulled them apart with one gesture. Yet, the soft, painful cry of Gourgeist rang in Marz's ears as he looked down at his friend laying on the ground.

Jack couldn't stand, no he'd taken too much damage to even try to get up. However, that didn't mean he was out yet. Using his arms, the Gourgeist dragged himself over to Marz. A weak smile on his lips as he saw his trainer standing on his own two legs. Jack could only give a weak cry of happiness before worried eyes and hands were on him in a moment. Flinching at some of the touches Marz gave him, he couldn't help but laugh a bit and try to stand up once more. Emphasis on the word try. Jack could barely manage to even get a good grip on the blond's pants, let alone try to stand on his own.

What would have been a rather touching sight to someone, only served to anger Adair further. Not only had Curt ripped up his generosity, but here was his only son was trying to comfort the woman who caused this mess. To add on to the list of annoyances, that wretched Gourgeist hadn't been knocked out. Dark eyes only narrowed in frustration as they slowly looked over at Gengar. A simple twitch of his finger had Genesis already hiding in Raviel's shadow perfectly. "I hate to say this, but Marzipan." Adair's voice was filled with fake sympathy as he stared the back of his child's head down. "It seems that you've lost your battle, and you know what that means right?"

Fakers were something Marz never enjoyed, now more than ever as he turned to look over at Adair. His blue eyes were so different compared to the harsh ones he stared into. "I do." That alone was his answer. He didn't need to say anything, or even pay attention to Adair. Instead, Jack preoccupied his time easily. Though it wasn't appreciated by his father.

Gray eyes onces again captivated by sapphire, she lifted her hand to gently brush the cut Marz had received from his father's ring. Brushing red and translucent liquid away from the broken man's face yet again. There were no words to be spoken. For there was nothing left to be said. Nothing else she could say. She'd been tempted, very tempted, to lean in and steal yet another kiss from Marz, but the young lord had gone to comfort his wounded Pokemon. A soft, longing smile pulled at her lips, mixed with emotions of happiness and sadness all at the same time. It was confusing for her. Extremely puzzling. "Ryu, help Jack out a little." She said quietly, and yet again the Lucario released a wave of healing Aura to ease the Gourgeist's pain.

Adair was forgotten at that moment, as she steadied herself on her own two feet. Cassie wanted nothing more than to stay by Marz's side through what his father intended for him, but she could feel the security's eyes on her, and she knew full well that she and her Pokemon had overstayed their welcome. Walking slowly towards the blond man, she pressed her lips against his cheek, and as she pulled back she quietly whispered, "Come with me. You don't have to endure this anymore." She straightened herself and cast her gaze downwards, occasionally looking over to Curt to see his condition. They were all in alarming danger.

Thus, as Cassie occupied herself with Marz, Nine strode over to Curt and sat beside where he stood. 'It wasn't very wise. What you did.' He said to Curt telepathically. 'I understand your reason for ripping the check apart, but you might've been pushing too far, don't you think?' His tails swayed slowly, eying the enraged Adair. 'We all have to take our leave soon. I suggest you go immediately, before the lord decides on another punishment.'

Marz had a sort of dreamy smile as he touched the cheek Cassie's hand had been on seconds ago. The sharp sting of pain he felt was worth it as Ryu's aura healed Jack slightly. His favorite ghost slowly started to relax in a way similar to when a small infant starts to fade out. "Thank you." Marz could only express his gratitude before he pulled out the Luxury Ball one last time for the night. "Now, Jack you deserve a good rest." The glowing light only covered the Gourgeist as he was returned to gain some sort of relief.

It was only the sensation of soft lips touching Marz's busted face made his sapphire eyes grow wide. Maybe it was the sensation of Cassie kissing him, or maybe it was from the words she had whispered into his ear. Either one had the young teen moving over to her. His arms already wrapping themselves around her waist as he quietly whispered to her for the final time. "Hide near the entrance of the manor in the morning. I'll see you near the bushes by the gates." Marz stared into Cassie's steel eyes with his own. It could have been a bold move to further incite his father's rage, but Marz couldn't find it within himself to stop what he would do next. His lips meeting Cassie's in a dance of love and surprise for a few moments until the familiar sensation of Adair's hand pulled the blond away.

Adair's patience was officially gone now. His large hand already grabbing at Marz's shoulder as he pulled his away with a simple tug. The noble was sure his face had never been such a royal red in all of his life until now. Rage was something he was use to in a multitude of situations, but not when it came from explicit disobedience. "I suggest you two care and leave the property." Adair wasn't in the mood for playing the good host anymore. "Security will lead you two out." That was all it good be said as he started to drag Marz back inside. Leaving Cassie and Curt to be dealt with by his staff.

“R-right, let’s go guy’s”, Curt said to his party as they joined Cassie and her team as the security guards began to escort them out. It was funny, the night seemed so quiet and peaceful now, with the chirping, hooting, and numerous other melodies of the night.

“Now that we got a chance to talk, I just want to say I’m glad you’re O.K Cassie, we all are”, Curt said to her with Embertail giving a soft growl in affirmation, ”I can’t believe Kyandi did something like that, trying to sabotage the battle is one thing, but having you attacked like that…ugh, I don’t think anyone expected it to go this far”. The Security Personal left them once they were safely outside the mansions gate, once Curt heard the gate lock behind them with a “click” he began to speak a bit more freely.

“But listen, don’t go blaming everything that happened tonight on yourself like I know you normally do, we were the ones who came here to steal from one of the most powerful families in Kalos, so we defiantly shoulder a good portion of the blame”, Curt said casing a small smile at Embertail who gave a soft chuckle of his own. However, if the look on Cassie and Ryu’s (especially Ryu’s) face were any indication, they weren’t entirely amused by Curt’s attempt to lighten the mood.

“Oh, don’t give me that look, I meant what I said before, we really were in the middle of backing out of the whole thing and just leaving right then and there when the security team spotted us”, Curt said, with Embertail and Raviel backing up their trainer with short growls.

“If we were really that greedy, we wouldn’t have torn up the check, and speaking of that”, Curt said while turning his attention more toward Ryu, his expression growing a bit more somber, “don’t worry about that, no one in my family would want to earn money like that, the only reason I considered taking the amulet was because I felt like it was stolen from me first, and let me tell you, tonight was a real sobering experience, I swear I’ll never try something like that again”. It felt good saying that to Cassie and Ryu, it was almost like his was making a promise to them, and giving himself another reason to keep himself in check. That said, he turned his attention back to the events of the night.

“But, damn, I can’t believe Kyandi had so little faith in Raviel and I that he felt that we would lose unless he intervened, honestly, I would have called the bastard out on that if I wasn’t so concerned about your well-being”, Curt said giving Cassie another smile, his good cheer returning.

“Raer, reh reh raeh”, Raviel said in a low, almost hostile voice.

“Yeah, I’d like to challenge him to a match too buddy and show him what you’re really made of”, Curt said as he knelt down to scratch the lightning Pokemons head,” but I think Marzipan has first dibs on him, and that reminds me, I owe you an apology for forgetting about you in the middle of the battle back there, I was just so worried about Cassie and…sigh…I just want to say that you did great out there, and don’t feel bad about the Shadow Ball, what happened was Kyandi’s fault, not yours”.

The Jolteon gave a friendly little “yip” to let Curt know all was forgiven, Embertail however, wasn’t quite done. With a sarcastic smile, he let out a few short growls while pointing to Curts’ belt. Curt let out a sigh, he knew exactly what Embertail was talking about, all of Curt’s Pokemon told him it was a bad idea, but, like an idiot, he didn’t listen to them.

“Yes, Embertail, I know, I know, it was a stupid idea to leave everyone else back at the motel. I just didn’t want to risk anyone else getting in trouble. But you’re right we’re a time and we should stick together no matter what”, Curt told his pal, the Charmander returning his friends word with a cheery grin.

“Besides, if I had Whips or Flare with me escape would have gone a lot smoother, or at the very least, I would have won the battle with…oh yeah, Marzipan…” Curt said as he returned his attention to Cassie.

“I just wish I got a change to talk to Marzipan, I’m partly to blame for him getting kicked out of his family, I’d just like to let him know that I want to find some way to help him fix this”, Curt said trailing off as he took one more look at the manor.

It was a magical moment when Marz once again had his arms around her. The world simply blurred out and melted away. She was fearful, for a moment, expecting only the worst to come from the youth's lips. Thus, when he answered the way he did, her heart nearly stopped. And it was a feeling she enjoyed for once. What happened next set her heart in its pace again, to feel Marz's lips on her's, like a cloud of sweets. Her eyes slipped shut almost instantly, to relish the moment, and just like that, he was taken from her.

Slowly, her eyelids lifted once again, revealing the gray that'd returned to its hardened state, and she watched his disappearing form, before brushing a strand of hair from her face, and left the premises with Nine and Ryu. Cassie walked slowly. Perhaps to let Curt catch up, or she simply was in a daze still. Her hair and dress were in a state of disarray, and that would've never been tolerated by the perfectionist. But that night, she simply wasn't herself. For the most part, her eyes were glued to the ground below as she mulled with the millions of thoughts racing through her head. Perhaps the tazer had short-circuited her brain, but Cassie was sure she should be feeling elated that tomorrow, she would see Marz again. A small smile pulled at her lips, just in time when Curt decided to blurt his plan to her. Eyebrow raised, while, as for Ryu, a glare was sent, Cassie let out a soft, amused chuckle accompanied with a slow shake of her head.

She proceeded to allow Curt continue with his testimony and justifications, before she stated simply. "I didn't really care about your attempt at thievery. I just thought it's probably not the wisest thing to say with those guys still following behind us." Her eyes traveled to the security guards, just as they slammed the manor gates in the rudest way possible. "Everyone makes bad decisions sometimes, though, I must admit I wasn't fully aware of your family's financial condition until now."

"But, yes. Thank you for your concern." She continued, her eyes sliding shut once again as she felt the need scar on her side. Her skin, and dress had been ruined that night. It was something she wasn't pleased about one bit. However, that irritation was once again turned to amusement when Curt mused on how much smoothly the battle, and plan would've gone if he'd taken Flare or Whips. "Oh Curt. Just now you were lamenting about beating Lord Kyandi's behind for having so little faith in Raviel. And now, look who's lacking faith in him."

A soft, tired giggle left her as once again, she shook her head. Cassie cast her gaze at the man and smiled softly. "Still, I do admire you. You're very noble. In the truest way. You're a wonderful person. That cheque would've solved everything for you, yet you chose not to take it. You know, people always say that children born from nobility are the lucky ones. But as you can see, it's clearly people that weren't, who are the lucky ones. And you, my dear Curt, are very lucky indeed. Seems your good heart brings you good fortune. Namely, avoiding jail sentence for attempted thievery, and trespassing." She looked at him in the most teasing way.

"If you'd like to speak to Marz, however, I'll be meeting him tomorrow. You can come along if you like. I'm not sure how he'll take it, though." She proceeded to pull out a shrank Pokeball from her purse, giving it a click to expand it into its normal size, before releasing Ace, who gave a proud cry. "That reminds me, where are you staying?"

Slowly, ever so slowly, guests started to leave the mansion's hollow shell in a meticulous fashion. Marz's busted face was easily fixed with the help of a small bandage and a few touches of makeup. At least their were fewer recognizable faces that he had to say farewell to made it a little more bearable to him. Though, the last noble to leave was probably the most heinous, and vastly unpleasant, for him at least. A lovely, petite woman wearing a large pink and black dress wouldn't be the worst choice of person to hug and kiss the gloved hand of. Unless, it was the lady that you despised and absolutely loathed, and yet you were going to marry like Marz.

Alyth Verse was of a noble background like every other guest that was invited in. Her family was one of the finest tailors and artisans in all of Kalos, having opened various high-end boutiques. Supplying not only their stores, but other clothing shops in the region. The Verse family had made a rather large fortune and name for themselves and there descendants. Alyth's dress was no different from the ones her family had made 'fashionable.' It looked like the woman was wearing an Aromatise with how fluffy and pink her gown was. Not to mention the extreme scent of perfume that radiated from Alyth in such amount it smelled like her Pokemon had literally used Sweet Scent on her. The delicate smile she wore on her heart shaped face made Marz want to gag as she kissed the blond on the cheek. A black and pink smear of lipstick smudged the last half of his face that hadn't been harmed. Though, it covered the exact same place of Cassie's beautiful kiss.

"It was so nice of you to invite me to your ball, Marzipan." The way she battered her green eyes would have read as a flirtatious move by anyone with a pair to witness it. However, to Marz, it was a simple calculated move in their dance of 'courtship.' When you've already been picked as soulmates for another, it was only natural you would do the small things such as flirting and public displays of affections. Marz could only force a smile onto his lips as he bowed slightly to grab hold of Alyth's delicate hand within his own.

Putting on all of the charm, he placed his lips right in the middle of her hand. "Well, I'm very happy you could enjoy the evening, Ms. Alyth." Blue sapphires stared at the lacquered emeralds of her own before looking away. The feeling of all of his disgust and anguish crawling up Marz's spine had him tempted to shiver underneath its claws. However, he was not a weaker man. So, suppressing the desire to simply go and bleach himself, physical contact of a full bodied hug was enough to compromise the fact. "I do hope you get home safely, my dear." His voice almost choked on the word 'dear.' The taste of stomach bile on his tongue caught him to stay sturdy. Luckily, Adair seemed to understand the predicament as he simply opened the door for Alyth.

The lord's smile was one of placid contempt as he looked over at the youth. "I'll have your ride waiting for you Ms. Verse, but I do so hope you found yourself enjoying the ball." Adair's voice was slick with false politeness as he watched Alyth take a dainty exit. Her heels clicking on the marble floor as she turned to nod and curtsy at the man.

"Oh quite so Lord Kyandi, I just found this night to be delightful." Alyth's soft, silky voice wafted into the night air. Along with her strong perfume as she only blew a kiss at Marz. Her puckered lips reminding the teen of a Jynx for a moment. "I hope to see your son at the champion league this year too." Without further haste, she made her way out. A small, pink handbag in tow as she left behind a trail of feathers on the ground.

Some part of Marz actually wished that she had stayed longer. He only chopped that part up to the fear he was feeling as he looked over at his father. Dark, menacing eyes stared directly at his very being as the blond looked down. Fear was a strong feeling, but absolute horror was worst. When it starts to sink in that Adair is holding a pair of scissors and an electric clipper that Marz actually started to rush for his room. He knew what was going through his father's, his lord's, mind right after the stunt that the blond had pulled.

If Marz was going to act like a commoner, he was going to look and be treated like.

The morning wasn't any better than the few hours before. Marz couldn't help the feeling of thick gel that coated his hair, or the stinging sensation that came from the back of his neck. It wasn't pleasant, it never was, but today was the day he was going to get away from all of it. At least, he could look ahead and think about new hairstyles he could change his messy hair into... Marz couldn't help but sigh loudly as he stared at the stranger in his bathroom mirror.

His blond hair was short, and very shaggy in comparison to what the noble had had a few hours ago. His cheek was bandaged rather crudely and his eyes looked extremely dark and heavy with sleep. This couldn't be Marz, but every action he did the man in front of him repeated it without a single fault. The long, baggy clothes he was wearing only emphasize how small he seemed to appear to the world around him... It was so, different to what the blond had seen constantly in a reflection of himself. However, there was no time for him to waste on looking at himself.

Adair had told Marz to leave before anyone, even the staff, was awake. If he wasn't gone, the other promised a rather bad time for him... So, ever so silently, the ex noble slipped through his window with practiced ease. The vines holding firmly onto the stone as he slowly descended down them. It wasn't until Marz only a few feet away from the ground that they snapped. Sending the surprised teen hurdling into a rose bush that had been planted a few weeks ago...

“…and don't get me wrong, I had the utmost faith in Raviel, why I said the battle would have been over in almost no time if I used Whips or Flare, well. Flare over here has the obvious type advantage, and she knows Dark Pulse, so long range or close range, Jack would have had a rough time”, Curt proceeded to inform Cassie. Curt had gathered his team and checked out of the hotel room early that morning, now he, Embertail, the rest of his party, and Cassie and her team where heading to meet up with Marzipan, and Curt was in the middle of "shooting the breeze" with Cassie on the way to the meet up point.

“And as for Whips”, Curt continued, “ever since he evolved into a Dragonite, he’s been damn near unstoppable, I once saw him dead lift an Aggron, drag her into the sky, and then just dropped her from almost a hundred feet in the air. A FREAKIN AGGRON! Embertail you saw it too, back me up here”. The Lizard Pokemon gave an excited roar and nodded at Cassie to back his best friend up, including his trade mark cheery smile. Along side them walked a Croconaw with soft spines and a scar on his right eye, and a eight-tailed Ninetale’s with a bang over her left eye.

“Indeed, while Whips has gotten incredible powerful, he has without a doubt let it gone to his head, he even refuses to fight an opponent he believes won’t offer him a challenge, that’s half the reason we lost the Pokemon League Tournament”, Flare said, with a touch of bitterness emitted through her telepathic voice.

“Yeah, but still, it was a close match, heh, right guy’s?”, Curt said, getting a few cheerful growls from Embertail and Lockjaw.

Despite the scare making the blue alligator look tough, Lockjaw was actually very bashful and shy. However, he knew Cassie and her team, and wasn’t shying away from the Ace Trainer at all. Flare also knew the Ace Trainer, and the Ninetails requested to be let out of her ball for a chance to talk with the human as well. Distracted by their talking, they almost didn’t notice that they had reached the outside of the mansion.

“Well, this is where Marzipan said he’d meet us right, where is-“, Curt began before a loud crash cut him off.

"BAM!"

“Wrat rahs rat!?”, Embertail yelped.

I…. think it sounded like something falling Embertail”, Curt replied to his partner before turning to Cassie, “do you think we should check it out Cassie?”

"Mh-hm." Was Cassie's simple response to the heaps of information Curt and his team had spilled at the time. A simple, amused smile was on her face as they walked from the Pokemon Center to the Kyandi Mansion. To her, it felt as if she had a younger sibling again; to have someone talk about something in great detail and length so excitedly. She never truly appreciated having a little sister until the day she left home. Until she spent her first night alone. Thus... To have someone like that around again was something she enjoyed, perhaps too much. "I'm happy to hear how your team has grown. I look forward to battling with you again."

Ryu restrained a soft yawn, granted, they hadn't been able to catch much sleep the other night. Cassie was a bit too excited to fall asleep, and all her stirring had kept her team up just as long. Despite that, the young lady seemed fresh as a daisy. In fact, she was pleased to be back in her usual, comfortable garments. Her boots and white turtleneck had never felt so comfortable. She adjusted the fedora atop her head, eyes shifting to Nine, who also let out a yawn. His buttermilk colored fur seemed a bit dull that morning, but that was simply his lack of rest. However, at least his fatigue distracted him from the fluster Flare usually sent him to.

Her eyes were cast ahead, occasionally gazing at Curt and his team, until a muffled 'bam' caught her ears. She turned her head to find that they'd arrived at the mansion, and that something had apparently fallen into one of the bushes. Where Marz said he'd meet her. "Curt, I do believe that was the person we came here for." With quick, urgent steps, Cassie was leaning over the rose bush where she found a man she hardly recognized. The ace trainer even had to furrow her brows to make sure he was who she thought he was. And then, her eyebrow raised in amusement. "Marz? Quite a grand entrance, I must say." Extending her hand, she began to pull the teen up to his feet, and then enveloping him in a hug. "You look awful." She mumbled with a mischievous smile.

Marz could barely believe that he had fallen. Really, it's true that he never climbed anything before... However, he still didn't believe that he had just landed smack dab in a thorn covered bush. A soft hiss of pain was the only sound that the teen allowed to escape from his lips. The sensation of multiple, little needles pushing through the bland clothing and scraping against his skin. A few of the thistles even went to nestle itself within his flesh. Yet, the sound of a woman's amused voice and the shadow hanging over Marz's body was enough to pull him away from his unpleasant experience.

Pale, blue eyes stared at Cassie's face for a moment in a sort of dazed state before he changed his expression. A bashful, quick smile flashed onto his face as he covered up the pain with a real happiness to see the Ace Trainer before him. "Well, I couldn't use the front door. It would be too bland and ordinary for you to see me coming from." Marz joked lightly as he ran a hand through his new hair. It was no longer a 'proper' haircut that he had the night before. Now it, it was the complete opposite. His fringed bangs replaced with messy, blond locks sweeping to the right and the composed look it had was now nothing more than a chaotic mess were strands pointedly stood up into the air. Marz looked like he was someone completely different from the night of revelry that took place a few hours ago.

"I can't say the same about you." He only smiled softly as he gently took his hand back from Cassie. Wanting to wipe off any of the thorns that clung to his clothing before he went to hug her. His hands barely poked out of the sleeves of new shirt as he quickly rubbed his body. The bagginess of Marz's oversized clothing made him look a lot smaller and slightly innocent... Blue eyes only stayed away from staring directly at Cassie's face, however the small flame coming off of a Charmander's tail caught his attention. The sight of Curt and his Pokemon was enough to make a scowl take on Marz's face as he stared at the teen. His voice was filled with nothing but bitterness as he addressed the trainer.

"What are you doing here?"

Curt allowed himself a quick moment to take a nervous breath before addressing Marzipan. He knew that the ex-noble wouldn’t exactly be overjoyed to see him, but Curt wanted to find a way to make it up to the guy and Cassie assured him this would be the best way.

“I, well, I came to apolo-, I mean, I want to…try and make up for last night”, Curt began, trying to suppress the butterflies in his stomach, “I didn’t intend for things to go…as they did and I certainly didn’t want to see you disowned from you family”. Marzipans icy glare told Curt that he wasn’t moved by Curt’s apology so far, his cold stare almost had Lockjaw shaking where he stood.

“This man holds much resentment toward you”, Flare told him telepathically, “I was once owned by a noble long ago, if there’s one thing people like them judge others on, it’s how people structure their words. I advise you to please, choose your next words extremely carefully.”

“Noted, thanks”, Curt responded quickly to Flare through her telepathy. She didn’t need to tell him Marzipan hated his guts, but she was right about picking his words carefully. Marzipan needed to at least be willing to tolerate Curt if he was to accept his help.

“Alright, I’m going to be honest, I did originally plan to…take the amulet when I joined the wait-staff, but I swear, on my honor as a trainer and a person, I was in the middle of giving up on the whole plan and just going home when the security team found me. I honestly didn’t even get any real chance to “steal” anything, I swear”, Curt said, trying to defend his actions.

“But that still doesn’t…absolve me of what happened last night, no matter what Cassie say’s, if those guards hadn’t followed me to where you two where you would have never been caught”, Curt said, desperately hoping Marzipan was believing his sincerity.

“Oh, and there’s someone else who wants to apologize”, Curt said as he reached for his belt and pulled out a Pokeball. Curt snapped open the ball, revealing a familiar yellow, spiky haired electric Pokemon. Raviel quickly looked at Marzipan, the fierceness that was in his eye’s the night before seemed to have been wiped clean away, replaced with a look of a look of shame.

“Raeh Reeeh”, the one eared Jolteon growled softly a Marzipan as one of his paws began making circles in the dirt. Though most humans could only understand their own Pokemon, the humility in Raviels voice would be apparent to anyone.

“Raviel wants to apologize, to you and Jack, for attacking while the rest of us where distracted by Cassie’s…situation. You see, when Jack tossed Raviel away to get to you it dazed him a little, and he didn’t realize what was going on at first”, Curt said as he knelt beside his electric partner,” He assumed that you and your father were trying to threaten me, so he just…decided to act, but he’s still very sorry for attacking Jack when his back was turned”.

“Reah Roooow”, Raviel growled again, lowering his head and casting his gaze towards the ground. With that out of the way, Curt picked himself up to address Marzipan again. They were done apologizing, and it was time to make things right.

“But I know just apologizing isn’t going to fix anything, so as far as I’m concerned, I owe you a favor”, Curt said with a little more confidence in his voice,” my family doesn’t have much money, but my team and I are fairly skilled and I’m sure we could figure some way to help you out, or, well….”. Curt trailed off as he stopped to cast a quick, tenuous glance at Embertail, who immediately returned his trainers gaze with a cheery grin.

“Embertail suggested that my team and I accompany you on your journey for a bit to see if we can help you, at least till you've felt that we've helped make things... right between us, or until you want us to leave”, Curt said with Embertail giving a short, pep filled growl toward Marzipan, “I mean, we're not going to follow you around while nagging you with advice or anything like that, we''d just be there to give you a hand if you needed one". Curt knew what he was saying was a little bold, but Embertail had insisted the night before that it was one of the best way to pay him back, even Flare said it wouldn't hurt to offer it to him, and surprisingly enough, the rest of his team was on board with the idea too (though Curt felt that his Pokemon just wanted to explore the Kalos region).

“But I know what I’m suggesting, and after last night, I’d completely understand if you didn’t want to be anywhere near me and my team. If you want us to get as far away from you as possible, just say so and I’ll be on the first ship out of Kalos”, Curt said a little quickly, “But we still felt like we owed you an apology for what happened last night, and I personally feel like I owe you some sort of favor, but…it’s up to you as to where I go from this point”, Curt finished.

For the while Marz sent daggers in Curt's direction, Nine and Ryu were once again by her side. She scratched behind their ears, and the two yawned almost in unison. "I'm sorry. You guys should rest. I'll be fine on my own, don't you worry." The dark haired trainer whispered soothingly. The second she finished her sentence, Nine nodded off and bumped his head against his Pokeball, disappearing in a flash of light as a result. Ryu rubbed his eyes groggily, before placing a paw on his own Pokeball and also retreating into it.

Finally, Cassie turned back to Marz, curiously fascinated by his new appearance. It was probably the polar opposite of what he looked like the previous night, but that was what fascinated her the most; to see him in a completely different light. Literally and figuratively. A small smile of amusement tugged at her lips in sight of his wild blond locks, and more so when she noted Curt's fumbling over his words.

She found it funny how a month ago, she couldn't care less about anything. She would simply pretend and play the part her parents made for her. Have people admire that instead of who she really was. Yet, that mold was broken and now, she searched for the identity that was still missing. It was terrifying to discover yourself, especially when you realize you're nothing like what you thought yourself to be.

Her smile dropped, however, when Curt mentioned last night's incident. Immediately, her fingers brushed over the spot where the tazer had come in contact with her skin. She could still smell the burning fabric. As if she wasn't afraid enough of fire. It was one of the decisions she made early on as a trainer; needing a fire type but being wary of open fires. Thus, when Nine came along, she caught him right away. However, snapping back to reality, Cassie let out a sigh and a small smile. "Well, three's a crowd." Finally her voice was heard again. "But Curt, you're in a situation just as bad as Marz, aren't you?" She found it necessary that she bridge the gaps between the two men, seeing how they were... Men. In other words, too caught up in themselves to do it on their own. "What about your family? You're losing your house, yet you want to come with us?"

Curt watched as Cassie called back her sleepy looking Pokemon, the one upside to leaving the majority of his team at the motel last night was that everyone, aside from Embertail, Raviel, and himself, got a decent amount of rest. Embertail tried to grab Ryu's attention with an energetic wave, but the Aura Pokemon was too tiered to take notice of him. Seeing the Pokemon yawn caused Raviel to stifle one of his own, Curt originally intended on letting him sleep in his ball, but The Spiky Pokemon insisted on being there to offer his apology to Marzipan along side the others. As for Embertail, he just didn't seem to feel the effects of sleep deprivation like everyone else did. He still needed as much sleep as everyone else, but you could wake him up in the middle of the night and he'd still be just as Jolly as he always is. Curt would probably be feeling tired himself...

If it wasn't for Cassie finally asking the one question Curt had been dreading to answer.

“Eh, hehe, yeah, actually we thought of that too…sort of”, Curt said while scratching the back of his head, “our families not doing...this is, uh,...we're about to lose our house, and even with me and my Pokemon doing odd jobs, it’s really only going to delay the inevitable”, Curt explained to Marzipan. It might have been a little mean spirited, but Marzipans new, less dapper appearance gave some sort of odd comfort to Curt. With out all the fancy clothes, expensive bobbles, and two-hundred dollar hair cuts, he just seemed like a normal person. almost a complete contrast to the person he and Raviel battled last night.

“A year, maybe two at the most, but even with all of working together to make money, we’re still going to run out of time and lose the house unless we get a large amount of money rather quickly, which is kind of why I need a little…help, and Cassie, you’re kind'a the only person I know who's in a position to...bail my family out, so to speak”, Curt said as he tried to avoid direct eye contact with either Cassie or Marzipan, all while still scratching the back of his head.

“Uh, Curt, you might want to clarify what you meant, because to me, it kind of sounded like we’re asking for money”, Flare pointed out through he telepathy while gritting her teeth in embarrassment.

He stopped scratching the back of his head. Curt’s face turned just a few shades short of beet red as he returned his focus to Cassie,” W-wait, no, I mean, uhh, I’m not trying to asking for money o-o-or anything like that, w-well, not exactly but, ugh…” Embertail was hunched over, both claws over his mouth while stifled cackles escaped from his mouth. He was doing his best to try and suppress his laughter as Curt continued to make a bigger and bigger fool of himself in front of everyone. The Lizard Pokemon was failing.

“A-alright I-I’m just going to come out and say it: Cassie, you have a Mega Ring right?”, Curt asked the Ace Trainer, but not before shooting the giggling Charmander a dirty look, “I read that it can locate near-bye Mega Stone if the person wearing it happens to pass by one, I was hoping Cassie that, if during the course of our travels, your Ring happens to come across a Mega Stone neither of you need, you could let me have it, so I could….sell it?”. Curt finished, an awkward smile plastered across his red face. He tried his best not to sound greedy, but instead he just sounded desperate. Embertail was still laughing, Curt ignored him.

“It’s….just…..Mega Stones are worth a lot of money, like, “if I had a dollar for every Zubat in Mt. Moon” amount of money, and the Kalos region is one of the few places in the world where you can find them”, Curt said quickly, before letting out a small sigh of resignation.

He was done trying to not sound desperate. Embertail had stop chuckling, now wearing a look of genuine concern on his face, a rare expression from the lizard Pokemon. Lockjaw too, now seemed to be gazing at the ground with a similar look of worry. Embertail and Lockjaw had both been a part of Curt’s family for many years, and very much shared his concern for their family’s well-being.

“You’re the only person I know who has a Mega Ring, it’s the only tool that can give us a reasonable chance of finding a Mega Stone in a short period of time", Curt admitted, as he tried to regain his composure,"I-I’m not just asking to tag along with you guy’s to find a way to pay Marzipan back, Cassie, your Ring finding a Mega Stone is the best chance my family’s got…”
