Mike was kind of expecting the question to come sooner or later. In fact the question had long been on Mike's mind. He still didn't have confirmation of the actual answer for it, but he had come up with an explanation that seemed logical.
"I've wondered that myself, but I think I know how they do it..." explained Mike, eager to tell Grey about his ideas, "Ususally I'd guess the gym leader circulates his or her Pokémon to keep them low-level." Mike took a short pause to gaze up at the mountains. He needed to keep from getting lost or this might be a very long day. His eyes then returned to Grey.
"However, I have gotten some badges without beating the gym-leader. You see, they don't actually have to keep the matches fair... The gym-leader's job is to evaluate the trainer in question. If the gym leader is happy with the performance displayed by the trainer, the gym leader will give the trainer a badge regardless of the outcome of the match..."
Mike remembered a story he'd heard once from another trainer. This kid had just given up on training due to a recent gym-battle and despite Mike's attempts, he would not give it another try.
"I once met this guy... He won his match against a gym leader. The gym leader was however displeased with the trainer, since he had pushed his Pokémon beyond what was humane for a battle. So in the end the guy didn't get his badge, despite winning the battle. Later, he actually quit being a trainer which kind of emphasizes the rightness of the gym leader's decision. If you can't even be motivated to try again after you fail, you're kind of ...not trainer material."
Mike fell silent for a while. He felt he was drifting off topic and wanted to sum it all up neatly for his friend. He smiled at Grey and said:
"Basically, it's your skill that determines whether you get a badge, and not the strength of your Pokémon"
Mike had almost forgotten about the Ekans from the morning. It seemed almost like a distant memory when Grey reminded him of it. He recalled the events of the morning and it actually took him a few seconds to fully figure out what had happened in the turmoil with all the Mankey.
"Actually, no, I didn't. I think it stayed around for a while until it got ugly, and then it got out of there... I should have done the same I guess. Anyway, I never really got a chance to catch it." Mike couldn't help but wonder what had happened to it. Had it really been abandoned? And if so, could it survive in the forest by itself?
"I hope it keeps safe and doesn't get into any trouble. I get the impression it didn't really know what it was doing there."
Mike suddenly caught his foot in a root that stuck out of the ground. The abrupt stop brought him straight to the ground. His face landed right in a pile of mud, and the rest of him wasn't that much cleaner, or dryer because of the rain. He lifted his head out of the brown sludge and wiped some of the dirt off with his hand. He got up on his hands and knees.
Mike let his head drop in a mix of humiliation and irritation. He opened his eyes and looked behind himself in an upside-down kind of way. The Ekans that had been following them stopped dead and lay completely motionless. It did not want to be caught. It didn't seem as if it was going to be either, because Mike had set eyes on a completely diffrent target: A spiky yellow tail that was moving through the tall grass behind them.
"Grey!!! GREY!!" Mike hissed and rolled over on his back. As the bewildered trainer approached Mike, he leaned in and whispered in Grey's ear: "I think I found your Pikachu! Right there." Mike extended his muddy arm in the direction of the tail, and then looked back onto Grey with a broad smile of accomplishment. He had felt a bit bad for taking Grey out of Pika-country, but now it seemed as if it might just have been a good move.
