Jacob and Oshawott continued on their way to Goldenrod City. It was a leisurely walk from Azalea Town to Goldenrod, but it was not enjoyed. Supposedly it wasn’t a long walk, but still Jacob and Oshawott were tired. They had been on the move for some time now, with only a couple nights at most spent in each town. Jacob rubbed his eyes and yawned as he paused for a moment. As he did, he heard s twig snap behind him. He swung around to see what was happening, but saw nothing. He squinted, looking carefully into the trees and he saw something move. Before he could react, however, something hit him from behind.
Thud! Jacob staggered for a moment, before standing up straight again. He could feel that Oshawott was no longer perched on his shoulder.
“Oshawott?” He turned around frantically to see where his pokemon went. Several feet from him, Oshawott lay on the ground, pinned by a Noctowl. “Alright then,” Jacob said, reaching for Ledian’s pokeball. Something stopped him, however, before he had reached it. He turned to see a Granbull, holding his arm. As he understood what was happening, the Granbull slammed his shoulder into Jacob’s stomach, knocking him to the ground. Still holding Jacob’s arms, the Granbull sat atop Jacob, preventing him from using his other pokemon. As Jacob reassessed, he heard someone remove themselves from the nearby brush. He counted enough for at least two of them.
“That was easier than I thought,” one said to the other. “And look at all we got!” Jacob felt his belt slip away from him, all his pokeballs still on it. He heard the people checking each of them. “Only one of em’s full!” He heard one of the people cry.
“Don’t worry,” the other responded. “We’ve still got the Oshawott, so at the very least…” but the man stopped talking. He heard several grunts before feeling the Granbull release him. Jacob flipped over to see two men running away from him, Granbull and Noctowl on either side of them. As he watched, he could feel Oshawott tugging on his arm. Jacob turned to his pokemon, who handed him back his belt with all of his pokeballs still attached. He wondered why the men had just up and left.
He turned around to see the answer. An old man stood just behind him; he couldn’t have been younger than 70. Wearing a dark brown coat, he was carrying a large sac, flung over his shoulder. Beside him stood a Slowking. The pokemon turned and gave a blank stare at Jacob. Jacob lifted himself to his feet, and faced the man.
“Thank you,” he began. “Thanks for… well for saving me and Oshawott.” The old man smiled and nodded at him.
“Those men have been haunting these woods for a long time; them, and men like ‘em. Never could stand ‘em. Are you okay?” Jacob brushed himself off.
“Yea I’m fine,” Jacob responded as he extended his hand. “I’m Jacob, and this here is Oshawott.” The old man took Jacob’s hand and gave it a firm shake.
“Arby,” the man replied. “And this is my Slowking.” Slowking just looked up at them, without saying a word. Jacob gave the pokemon a nod before turning back to the old man.
“Well, Arby, you saved my life; is there anything I can do to help?” Jacob paused for a moment, but before the old man could answer, he continued. “Maybe I could carry that bag for you, wherever you’re going?” Jacob offered. The man looked Jacob over cautiously before reluctantly dropping the bag to the ground.
“I suppose I am a bit old to be carrying such a thing.” Jacob lifted the bag, but it was far heavier than he thought. Jacob struggled to throw it over his shoulder, before he and the old man set off. Arby told Jacob about his home in the woods, where he had lived for nearly thirty years now. Jacob told Arby all about his travels in Kalos, and Arby told Jacob about his grandson, Bugsy, who was a gym leader in Azalea Town. Jacob told Arby about how he had beaten Bugsy, and the two of them shared a laugh. Arby’s home was less than a mile away, and when they arrived, the old man offered Jacob a room for the night. Jacob happily accepted.

Jacob woke with a start. He was sweating pretty heavily, and was out of breath. For his life he couldn’t remember what he was dreaming about, but he was startled again when he saw a shadow in the doorway. He took a closer look, realizing it was Slowking. The pokemon tilted his head, looking Jacob over. Jacob gave the pokemon a strained look back. Then he looked over at Oshawott, who was still fast asleep next to him. Jacob looked out the window; it was already light out. He quickly got out of bed and threw on clothes. As he walked downstairs, he could smell fresh pancakes. Apparently Arby was a good cook as well; although, Jacob supposed one had to be to live alone for so long. As Jacob entered the kitchen, Arby greeted him.
“Looks like someone had a tough sleep,” the old man joked. Jacob looked himself over, realizing he probably looked really sweaty. “Don’t worry,” Arby added. “You can take a shower before you leave.”
“Thanks!” Jacob replied immediately; in fact, a bit too fast.
“Ha,” Arby laughed. “I suppose you haven’t had a shower in…”
“Two and a half weeks,” Jacob filled in.
“Dear God!” The old man replied, turning away from his cooking for a moment before returning to his work. “I remember when I used to travel like that!”
“You were a pokemon trainer once?” Jacob inquired.
“Well don’t sound so surprised,” Arby joked. “Yeah, I was a great trainer once; made it all the way to the pokemon league in Kanto and here in Johto. I traveled for four years! Ah, those were the days.”
“Really?” Jacob asked. “Why did you stop?”
“Well, I met a woman!” Arby said, half laughing. “It’s really difficult to keep going, ya know, once you start a family. Sometimes, I wish I could still travel…”
“Well you can, can’t you? I mean, that’s what you were doing when you saved me, right?”
“Ha!” Arby laughed in response. “Nah, I was just bringing my things to my new home in Azalea town.”
“You’re moving?”
“Yea… I figured it’s about time to be with my family, you know,” Arby said, pausing once again from his cooking. “I do wish I could travel just one more time; ol’ Slowking here would’ve liked that.”
Jacob looked over at the doorway to the kitchen, where Oshawott now stood rubbing his eyes. “Morning,” Jacob said, chuckling about the lateness with which his pokemon arrived.
“You know,” Arby continued as he placed a plate of pancakes in front of Jacob. “Would you do me a favor?”
“Of course,” Jacob replied. “Anything.”
“When you leave, would you…” Arby paused, halting his production of pancakes once more, and faced Jacob. “Would you take Slowking with you?”
“Wha-no, no I couldn’t,” Jacob replied. “You’ve been with Slowking for years! Besides, wouldn’t you be lonely?”
“Ah, I’m going to be with my family,” Arby responded. “They won’t give me enough time, to be lonely. And anyway, Slowking; he just isn’t ready to settle quite yet. He wouldn’t like it, and I couldn’t do it to him. Please, take Slowkng with you, and use him as part of your team. I promise he’ll be a good member.”
“Well… I guess I could,” Jacob looked over at Slowking who had just sat in a small, Slowking-sized seat at the far end of the table. “I’ll do it. I can’t thank you enough…”
“No, no… I can’t thank you enough,” Arby walked over to Jacob’s chair. “Now eat up! You’ve got a lot more pancakes coming!”

Jacob continued on his way to Goldenrod City. The city itself was only about a mile away, and Jacob was beginning to get excited: not just because he was approaching another gym badge, but also because of the new addition to his team. Slowking would definitely be a powerful ally, and Jacob was looking forward to using his new pokemon as soon as possible. Jacob turned to look at Oshawott, who was happily eating an oran berry, sitting on Jacob’s shoulder. He turned back to the road, and continued on his way.
He began to think about how he had been getting his pokemon. In Kalos he battled and caught every one of his pokemon. Here, he already had half of his team, and he hadn’t actually caught a single one of them; Ledian had joined his team after Jacob had helped him defeat the bully Ariados, and now Slowking was sent with him to have another adventure. He missed capturing pokemon, and as he was thinking about this, he came across his chance. A wild Murkrow had flown into the center of the road, pecking at the ground. This was a perfect chance to catch a pokemon, Jacob thought, as well as try out his new one. He threw a pokeball, and in a flash of red, Slowking appeared.
“Slowking, use water gun!” Slowking opened his mouth slowly, released a powerful jet of water at the wild Murkrow. Mukrow was quick, however, and flew into the sky, avoiding Slowking’s attack. Murkrow attacked next releasing a black beam of energy in a night shade attack. The attack slammed into Slowking, and the pokemon dropped to his knees in pain. “Slowking!” Jacob called out. “Use Psychic!” Slowking glowed blue, catching Murkrow in a similar glow. Slowking slammed Murkrow on the ground, and the pokemon struggled to get up. “Now, Slowking, use water gun!” Slowking released another beam of water, slamming into Murkrow, and knocking the pokemon unconscious. Jacob threw an empty pokeball, capturing the Murkrow. “Well done, Slowking!”

When Jacob entered Goldenrod City, his first impulse was to head straight for the gym. He fast-walked to the center of the city, where the gym was. However, on the front steps were three men he recognized. The three men stood around another young man, who was on the ground.
“You..” Jacob overheard one of them men say. “You chose Chikorita as your starter?!? And it hasn’t evolved yet? No wonder you got beat so bad by Whitney!” The three men laughed, and Jacob clenched his fists.
“But… but you also chose Chikorita,” the boy on the ground said. Jacob moved a bit closer, and recognized the Chikorita, the same one from the forest near Cherrygrove, on leash, staring at the ground.
“Yea,” one of the men replied. “But I just did it for a joke! I don’t use this pokemon here!” The man laughed at that was all Jacob could take. He grabbed the man on the shoulder.
“Enough!” Jacob said. The three men turned around, angrily, before they realized who it was.
“You again?!? What’s your problem?”
“You have to stop,” Jacob said. “You keep Chikorita on a leash? I think it’s time to release her, no? Let her find a trainer who actually wants her.”
“Well, she’s my pokemon, and no one is going to take her from me!” The man stuck up his nose, and smiled wryly. “How about this,” the man replied. “I’ll battle you again; we’ll have a little rematch. And if I win, I get your Oshawott. And if you win, you can have Chikorita; return her to the professor, find a trainer for her; release her for all I care. All you have to do is win a battle.” Jacob didn’t like the terms, but he looked up at Oshawott, and the pokemon was shaking with rage.
“Fine, let’s do it!” Oshawott nodded, and Jacob took a step back, reaching for his pokemon. He thought for a moment; Murkrow was too new for this battle; Slowking was definitely Jacob’s most powerful pokemon, but he was, frankly too slow. Jacob trusted Ledian more than any pokemon but Oshawott. But Ledian’s typing left it relatively open. Nonetheless, he figured Ledian was the best choice. He released Ledian who appeared at Jacob’s side.
“This time, you won’t be lucky! Let’s go, Houndor!” The fire hound pokemon appeared in front of the man, who confidently smiled. “Houndor, use ember!” The pokemon sent a column of burning embers at Ledian.
“Ledian, silver wind!” Ledian released a powerful set of wind blasts, which dispelled Houndor’s ember attack. One of the blasts hit the ground in front of Houndor, forcing the pokemon to brace itself. “Now, Ledian, use supersonic!”
“Houndor, dodge it!” Houndor leapt to the side, easily dodging Ledian’s attack. “Now, fire fang!” Houndor lunged at Ledian, his mouth foaming with flames.
“Ledian, dodge it!” Ledian flew high in the sky out of Houndor’s reach. It was Jacob’s advantage, he figured, that Ledian could stay far away from Houndor, whose most powerful attacks seemed to be close ranged. “Now, use bug buzz!” Ledian released red waves of energy which covered the field, harming Houndor, who could not escape the noise.
“Houndor!” the man shouted after his pokemon, who was rendered immobile by the attack.
“Now, Ledian, use supersonic!” Ledian stopped its bug buzz and released a supersonic attack, which easily hit the recovering Houndor. The confused pokemon stumbled to the side, and fell to the ground. “Look,” Jacob said to the man. “There’s no need to continue; it’s clear that the battle is over.” The man angrily stared at his Houndor.
“The battle is not over! Houndor use ember!” Houndor stood, shaking its head but it fired its embers at the ground, harming himself and forcefully sending himself falling backwards.
“Very well, Ledian, use comet punch!” Ledian flew in close range and unleashed a barrage of punches at Houndor, continuing the attack until Houndor fell to the ground, unconscious.
“No! That wasn’t fair!” the man shouted at Jake. “You’re not taking my pokemon. Come on out!” he shouted as he released three pokeballs. An Ariados, Croconow, and Ursaring appeared in front of the man who smiled confidently. “What are you going to do now, eh?”
“He’s going to take your Chikorita,”a voice that came from behind them. Jacob turned to see the gym leader, Whitney, standing beside her Clefairy. “You lost, and more importantly, you need to let your Chikorita go to an actual pokemon trainer. Release your Chikorita, recall your pokemon, and leave.” She spoke so definitively, that one of the man’s friends tapped him on the shoulder, no doubt whispering agreement to Whitney’s terms. The man nodded silently, removing the leash from Chikorita before leaving the area, his pokemon close behind him. The Chikorita ran over to Jacob and nuzzled his leg. Jacob bent down, and began petting the pokemon.
“Thank you,” Jacob said to Whitney, who stood beside him. “I wasn’t sure he was actually going to let me take her.”
“Well,” the gym leader replied. “I wouldn’t usually support that sort of gambling with people’s pokemon, but that man…”
“I agree,” Jacob responded. “I’m Jacob by the way,” he said, sticking out his hand.
“Whitney,” the gym leader answered, without shaking Jacob’s hand. “You’re here for a gym battle, right?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Well, come on, then,” she motioned towards the gym. Jacob followed her inside to a stadium with many seats all around, entirely empty. Each of them took their places, and Whitney shouted to Jacob. “This battle will be three versus three. Are you ready?”
“Let’s do it.”
“Alright, Nidorina!” the woman called out. In a flash, her pokemon appeared in front of her. Jacob had never seen a Nidorina before, but he wouldn’t let his awe get the best of him. At his feet, Oshawott sat with Chikorita. Jacob hoped that Oshawott would be able to keep her calm; it had been an interesting day for the both of them. With Ledian injured, and Chikorita too fresh, Jacob had few choices for pokemon.
“Come on out, Murkrow!” Murkrow appeared in the sky in front of Jacob. “Murkrow, use night shade!” Murkrow released a beam of black energy at Nidorina. Whitney shouted out an order, but her pokemon wasn’t fast enough to dodge the attack, disappearing in a cloud of smoke. When the smoke cleared, the pokemon stood, almost unharmed.
“Nidorina, use poison sting!” Nidorina released small purple needles which hit Murkrow, knocking him to the ground. Murkrow stood, but didn’t look quite right. Jacob understood: the pokemon was poisoned. “Great, Nidorina. Now, use double kick!” Nidorina flew forwards at a great speed, leaping into the air before slamming her feet into Murkrow. The bird pokemon fell backwards to the ground, unconscious.
“Murkrow!” Jacob shouted before recalling his pokemon. “Alright Oshawott, you’re up!” Oshawott leapt from his conversation with Chikorita and walked onto the field. “Oshawoot, use water gun!”
“Nidorina, dodge it!” Nidorina easily sidestepped Oshawott’s attack. “Now, use poison sting!” Nidorina sent a column of poison needles at Oshawott.
“Oshawott, use aqua jet!” Oshawott was covered with water and fired forwards, narrowly dodging the poison sting attack before slamming into Nidorina. Nidorina struggled to get to her feet as Jacob gave the next order. “Oshawott, use water gun!” Oshawott fired a blast of water at Nidorina, who was hit and sent skidding across the field. As she came to a stop, the pokemon dropped her head to the ground, unconscious.
“Return, Nidoina,” Whitney said as Nidorina disappeared from the field. “Clefairy, you’re up!” Clefairy stepped forward from Witney’s side of the field, and flexed, prepared for battle.
“Alright Oshawott, use water gun again!” Oshawott fired a water gun attack at Clefairy.
“Clefairy, use moonblast!” Clefairy fired a ball of pink energy at the water gun. The two attacks collided, and dispelled each other. “Now use disarming voice!” Clefairy released purple waves of sound that overcame Oshawott, forcing him to cover his ears.
“Oshawott, use aqua jet!” Oshawott few out of the attack, covered in water. He slammed into Clefairy, knocking the pokemon to the ground. “And now use water pulse!” Oshawott released a ball of water that surrounded Clefairy. The water vibrated for a time before releasing the pink pokemon, who fell to the ground, unconscious.
“Wow,” Whitney said. “Your Oshawott really is something,” she commented, recalling her pokemon. “But he won’t stand a chance against my next pokemon! Your turn, Miltank!” Miltank energetically stepped from side to side, prepared for battle.
“Oshawott, use water pulse!” Again Oshawott released a ball of water, floating towards Miltank.
“Miltank, use rollout!” The cow pokemon rolled up into a ball, and sent itself forward, easily breaking through Oshawott’s attack before slamming into Oshawott himself.
“Oshawott!” Jacob called out as his pokemon fell to the ground.
“Miltank, use rollout again!” Again Miltank rolled towards Oshawott.
“Oshawott, use aqua jet!” The two attacks collided in the center of the field, but Miltank’s attack was more powerful, and Oshawott fell to the ground, struggling to move.
“Again, Miltank, use rollout!” Once more, Miltank slammed into Oshawott, knocking him to the ground, unconscious.
Jacob walked over to Oshawott, and picked him up. Walking back to his position, he placed Oshawott on the ground beside him. Reaching for a pokeball, he prepared his next move.
“Slowking, your turn!” Jacob said as Slowking appeared in a flash of red. “Slowking, use water gun!” Slowking released a beam of water larger than Oshawott’s.
“Miltank, dodge, and then use rollout!” Miltank sidestepped Slowking’s water gun attack before rolling up in a ball once more and firing herself at her opponent.
“Slowking, use confusion!” Miltank glowed purple before firing backwards, still in a ball, slamming into a nearby wall. When the dust cleared, Miltank stood, clutching her arm which had been damaged in the attack. “Now, use psychic!” Miltank glowed blue as she was lifted from the ground high into the sky. She was released, and the pokemon hit the ground with a loud thud! Miltank was unable to move, rendered unconscious. Jacob had won.
