Xander
How did I even get in this mess…
Xander was covered from almost head to toe in string, his head peeking out of the cocoon that trapped him. Beside him, a Kadabra was also bound to the walls of this massive Wurmple-infested nest, big enough to pass a cave. They were both deep inside, the light from the entrance barely visible.
“Sorry for dragging you into this…” The Kadabra apologized through telepathy, which was something he wasn’t used to yet.
“Dang it Arion, you still tried this when you are weak to bug-types.” He sighed, struggling to move. The cocoon shook a little, but not enough to free himself. Xander though back to how this all started.
Two days prior…
“Hello uncle, I’m finally here.” Xander shrugged, adjusting his uniform. He was fifteen years old, but still very capable and resourceful. He was a student at Naranja Academy, and decided to spend his summer at home with his uncle Theodore, and aunt Emiko. They lived in a quaint apartment above a local bakery, Xander could remember smelling fresh bread through his window even when he was small.
When he was a kid, his parents died, collateral damage in a gang war between some criminals. Xander had been with them, and was told to run home, call for help. But when it arrived, it was too late.
He was a lost soul now...
His aunt and uncle welcomed him into their family with open arms, not knowing where else to take him. He was most excited to see his younger cousin, Arion. While he was almost thirteen now, Xander would always see him as the little brother who needed him for everything. He was just so optimistic and impulsive, like a jumpy Nymble.
“Xander! Quick, we need your help about this. It’s about Arion.” His uncle said, beckoning him in as he took off his shoes. “What happened?! Is he okay? Is he hurt?” Xander said in a panic, his tone slightly too loud. But his uncle patted him on the back as a form of reassurance, and the blonde boy exhaled.
“No, no. He’s fine… Just, he isn’t exactly human anymore.” His uncle tried to explain, though the words were getting stuck in his mouth. Xander didn’t get it either, and he tried to clarify things. But then something teleported in front of him, and gave him a strong hug. Xander felt his feet lift off the ground just a little, freaking him out.
“Hey Xander! I’ve missed you so so much!” The voice said, though it felt like it was beamed into his head. He looked down to see a Kadabra, one with his cousin’s lucky necklace, holding him in a tight embrace.
“Uh, is this like a wild one? I’m confused.” Xander replied, unsure of what was even going on anymore. The Kadabra teleported to the window in a flash, and his aunt walked in with a soft hum.
“Oh my goodness! I didn’t expect you for another hour, sit down, sit down!” His aunt called as he obliged, resting his legs after a lot of walking. The Kadabra seemed to be standing there, waiting for something to be said, while toying with its spoon. The utensil spun in the Pokemon's hand like a fidget toy.
“I wish we could have told you beforehand, but Arion has woken up as a Kadabra. We've talked to several doctors and at least one Psychic, and they say it's permanent. Luckily, his soul hasn't changed, apparently.” His aunt said as she poured him a cup of tea, from a teapot that looked like it should have had a Polteagiest. It was exactly like the stories. Arion had always had extrasensory powers, but it was just the usual bad feeling or locating precious items. However, while he was away, his cousin had become a Pokémon, and he wanted Xander to be his trainer.
“C’mon, it’ll be fun! I can be a member of your team, take on Cynthia one day! It’ll be sick!” Arion had said excitedly, drinking from a juice box. Xander took a spot of tea, considering his options. He had learned some TMs that were lying around the house, and had some experience with being a psychic. Xander wasn’t sure, but his cousin asked for him to accompany the plucky Kadabra to a weird place he found in Eterna Forest so they could train.
Somewhere with a metric ton of bugs…
Present…
Suddenly, his pocket began to shake, and with an odd amount of force, a pair of Pokeballs was ripped from the cocoon.
"Yes, I knew I could do that! But man it took a lot out of me." Arion chuckled through telepathy with a pant, as Xander struggled in excitement. It was impressive since the Kadabra could barely move his arms in the embrace of the strings, so it was all in the mind.
"Atta boy, cuz! You're definitely learning out here!" They watched as the balls rolled around in opposite directions before revealing in a flash...
“Tango! Thank goodness, help me out here!” Xander announced, as a Flamigo wearing a stylish red bandana squawked, spreading its wings to announce its presence. The other Pokémon was a Cramorant, one that Xander hadn’t decided to a nickname for yet. It was from the far-off land of Kitakami, from his school’s field trip a while back.
“Oh hey buddy, nice to finally see you again.” Xander chuckled at the blue bird, who let out a low screech. Suddenly, he heard Arion squirming against his cocoon, as a sign that there was danger coming.
“We got Wurmples, coming from above! Maybe even a ticked-off Silcoon! And I can’t use my spoon!” Arion warned, the a horde of them descending from the ceiling in droves towards the two avian Pokémon. It was a scene straight out of a horror movie.
“Tango, fend those creepy-crawlies off! Cramorant, find help, anyone!” Xander said as he began to squirm in his cocoon. Cramorant scurried away, struggling to take flight, as it watched Tango begin firing off Double Kicks, but they kept coming, and coming.
The Gulp Pokémon ran as fast as its webbed feet could take it.
May Arceus help it now.
