Upon hearing the spirited voice of a certain lively Hyūga call out to him, Kiro expected the maids had finally caught up to him. Tayuya had been pestered by numerous maids earlier and that had left him under the impression he would be hunted next. However, once Kiro took a good look at the girl, who was dressed in casual wear, it appeared he was safe for the time being.
“I was just taking a jog around the area before I get back to training. Well, to be honest, this is my first time in this village during Christmas so I’m also trying to take in the atmosphere and see what’s up. It’s quite impressive how much effort the Hyūga are putting in to prepare for the upcoming festivities.”
Kiro casually shared his thoughts to the girl, not really minding the sudden company. Of course, he still had no idea why the girl had come up to him. Maybe it was the holiday spirit going around. He did get a familiar vibe from her but couldn’t pinpoint exactly who the girl might be connected to.
“Anyways, do I know you?”
“Proof? Alright. Once we’re out of prison, when are you going to be available?”
Agile with his response, Kiro huffed in amusement before continuing to go along with their little ongoing repartee.
This conversation felt different. Especially compared to their previous ones. For him personally, there was a noticeable lack of friction between them two. He would admit most of that past hostility did stem from his side. But still, now they were able to have a natural, if not enjoyable, exchange with each other. Something which was a first with Sagisō.
However, it was ironic that they were having this talk while imprisoned. If it weren’t for the dreary, darkened walls that separated him from Sagisō, perhaps he would have completed forgotten where they were and how they had ended up in this position. Well, that last part wasn’t exactly rue. For him, it was exactly as Sagisō had said...
“Yeah, it was nice having a mother...”
Saying that term always left a bittersweet taste in his mouth. It was something about his mother, where even just being in her presence gave him this cozy feeling. There was this warmth he felt just thinking about her. Motherly affection shouldn’t be underestimated. Those were feelings that transcended time and space after all. Feelings that a young child thought they would never lose.
That day. That sight. That moment. Even the punishment the Uchiha had received from Jin couldn’t compare to the cold, empty feeling of despair inside of him. He nearly shivered thinking about it. To deal with this, Kiro simply took a breath, allowing him to drop those memories for the moment and refocus his thoughts to Sagisō.
Having a mother must’ve been a new experience for her. Obviously she was talking about Lady Hinagiku. He was pretty certain Sagisō had next to no memories of her biological mother. She had lost out on so much. Maybe it was just his bias, but he felt a mother played perhaps the most important role in a child’s life. For Sagisō not to have at least a mother like figure in her life for so long… confused him.
“Is Nadeshiko setup a certain way or did they just leave you on your own? Even though you weren’t born as a Nadeshiko, I find it hard to believe that in a village of all women, not one of them played that role for you.”
He spoke with just a little more interest than before, but still managed to keep his calm tone unchanged. His attentiveness also continued to remain the same as he awaited her response.
