:O An Art Thread From Alex?

I'm not really a drawer - in fact, I kinda suck at drawing overall - but I do have some art in the form of Photoshop muckery to fling around (especially with my Design modules in my course), so I've signed up for DeviantArt and got me a few pieces up.

These two pieces are for a comic I've been working on with Rachel - I wont divulge all the details, but I will answer any questions about the concept etc if anyone is interested enough to ask.

Production of the comic itself will probably take quite some time, and so I've been working on these 'promo' or introductory images in the meantime to both get some awareness of its existence out there and to keep myself hyped up in it to work on writing it.

Crescent_Warriors___Thunder_by_DoctorOak.jpg

(Larger)

This first image introduces what would probably be recognised as the 'main' character - certainly, she leads the readers into the comic. Her name is Codename: Thunder - or as she'll be referred to a lot more often as - Amber (I haven't decided on a surname yet for various reasons), and ends up with the power to control an electrical output from her body. Being fairly proficient in hand-to-hand fighting skills to begin with, she uses this ability in tandem with basic combat - hence one of the major thematic images of the series is Amber's fist sparking with electricity.

The fist is actually mine. As I didn't actually have any access to any female fists at the time for the image... So, it is kind of a big hand for a female protagonist - but I'd like to hope it's as gender ambiguous as possible - as the final logo design will definitely be aiming to just be seen as a "hand" not a "male hand" or "female hand" for various reasons.

Because I'm not drawing these as they will eventually be drawn, everything is very much 'stock' for now. The building in the background that is used to symbolise the Crescent Library - a headquarters, essentially - of the Crescent Warriors is very much just "a tall building" for now. In the final comics and art, the building will be a lot more stylised.

The_Crescent_Warriors__Hawk_by_DoctorOak.jpg

(Larger)

This second image focuses on another major character in the series (one of the first four main cast characters to appear): Hawk. You can read the description on DA if you want the full information on his character. As far as the picture goes, again it focuses on key imagery for the series - the crescent moon, you can see the Library in the distance as the tallest building in the city and highlighted with a bit of extra activity on the top floors.

Hawk himself was pretty tricky to get looking right. The design for his character hasn't been completely finalised yet, so I couldn't be too committed to any specific hair style or build - but I'd say this sort of averagely well built body and short, spiky hair is what will make it through to the finished product. I tried to highlight areas like his arms, trousers and knees to just give the silhouette some basic distinction in his body shape. I'm not convinced it works 100%, but I'm not sure what I could do about it... so, yeah...

Featured in this picture is the concept of Hawk's 'Emblem'. Every character has an emblem to go with their names and abilities - and although when we finalise what we'll do for each character's emblems they'll be - obviously - hand drawn and a lot more simplistic, the basic theme of a Hawk or identifiable bird of prey for Hawk's emblem is pretty obvious. Amber's, for example, will be her signature image of her fist electrified and so on.

Soo... yeah, comments, critiques, feedback and questions very much welcome - thanks. :)

I have a couple of new things up - as well as my Sonic Chronicles wallpapers that I updated Spin Dash with a while back.

These are short assignments for my Design for New Media course at Uni, you can read more about them on their dA pages:

I love the first two pictures Alex. They look awesome.

The second one just stands out for me. The darkness of night with the moon shiny, something I really like.

And the Fable II, nice. Too bad I don't have an XBox 360. (Not like I need one...My Wii and PS3 are enough already.) Concept is great. And I would comment more, but I have no clue what the point of Fable is so...yeah.

I'm afraid I have never really experimented with Art programs, so I'm always amazed when people can pull off things like this. The Fable 2 Poster is quite possibly the best in my opinion. I just love the scaly effects in the background and the merging of the two controllers.

This crescent warriors thing looks uber neat. I'll hope to look forward to that. With regards to the poster, I particularly am interested in how you pulled off the electricity around your fist.

Keep it up, Doc! It is awesome!

Love the Wallpaper, Alex. Great use of the stock and I like the texture you have built up in it. The colours match up well and the text suits it perfectly.

May I be an ass and ask for the stock? I can see it coming in use some day :p

Those are all pretty good. I especially like the newest wallpaper. It's beautiful. :D I really like the texture of the background, and how the flower is rather faded in the background. The text on the stem of the flower is nice as well.

I really can't find anything to critique on those pics; they're all really good. Keep it up, post moar. *watches on dA*

Well. The new layout looks awesome. You've outdone yourself Alex. Any chance of a Chrismasy theme in time for December?

The only thing putting me off about the final working result is how Palkia's picture slightly overlaps the text box (looks kinda squished), but is there any possible way to fix that?

Otherwise, you know my thoughts on the rest :)

The bad things that stood out to me there was that it's a bit too green for my books, and the cheese ads on the side :p

Apart from those two little nitpicks, rest is perfect. I love it :)

You do realise the site's main colour theme is green, right? :p

Moar random web design:

PokeMart_com_Design_by_DoctorOak.jpg

They have the Internet in the Pokemon world - so it's safe to assume they'd have a PokeMart website on it, right?

Working with that idea, I've mocked up a design for a fictional PokeMart.com. The entire site exists as if it actually is IN the Pokemon World. I used actual Pokemon Game fonts as a substitute to the normal fonts of Arial, Verdana, Helvetica etc; and included a few ads for other major areas in the Pokemon World that would probably advertise on a site like this.

When you click on one of the sections of the store, the "New In Stock" banner would change to reflect the section you were looking at.

The basis of the design was to try and make it look like the actual storefront of the PokeMarts in the game - it's fairly obscured, but you can see the door at the bottom. It's also why it says SHOP in big red letters at the top of the sidebar, though this seems to have disappeared from PokeMarts as of Generation IV.

I also aimed to give it as much of a pixelly look as possible to fit in with the fact it's based off the Pokemon games. That aesthetic is present most of the time - but for the sake of looking nice, I let it slip on occassion

I couldn't really be bothered trying to imagine what kind of Credit/Debit cards would exist in the Pokemon World, so I just nicked OURS instead. I wouldn't be too surprised if these had permeated into a fictional world anyway - they're everywhere else...

I like this one, how the stuff in the background isn't as in-your-face to draw you away from the focal, yet enough to add to the wallpaper itself.

And I have an idea for a design, why not something Final Fantasy-ee? (Yes I'm a fanatic :p)

Might I request a signature sized banner for the Baby Cup I'm hosting here? ;)

I would like it to include:

"Pokecharms Winter Tournament: Baby Cup" or just "Pokecharms Baby Cup" because the first seems like it might be a bit long.. Include that somewhere near the top with whatever design you like best.

Something along the lines of this from my current signature: "Pokemon entered will be level 5, so no worries about Training: just pick some pokemon you like and give them suitable movesets." I'm not as worried about mentioning the clinic.

I'd like it to somewhere include that the deadline is December 20th [smaller text toward the bottom, I suppose XD]

I'd have to request that you not use pokemon banned from entry in the tourney however ^^;
Those pokemn are:
Aipom
Yanma
Gligar
Sneasel
Murkrow
Misdreavus
Lickitung
Tangela
Nosepass
Wynaut
Munchlax
Scyther
Meditite
Lileep
Cranidos
Phione

Wynaut and Munchlax were the main reasons I thought I should mention that, the others I'm just including to be certain XD

Use whatever color scheme and other pokemon you might like, I more than trust your ideas :)

I missed this post - sorry. Thanks for the comment. :) I'll see what I can do concerning a Final Fantasy themed... whatever.

I think the Online Poke Mart is very neat, in that its rather realistic with regards to how most online marts are designed.

Ruko's sig is adorable, and the pun slogan is rather humorous.

Though what really caught my attention was the SF4 wallpaper. The background goes very well with the images and the color really brings out that of Ryu and Sagat's wardrobe. I'll be looking forward to seeing that Final Fantasy request of LoN's.

Welp, I love your stuff. My favorite has to be Pokemart.com, it looks really nice for a website and it's definitely a Pokemart. Your random wallpaper has me thinking of Wilson from Castaway... the volleyball. And one of the blood splatters looks a lot like "Objection!", don't know if that was intentional or not.

It looks like Sonic's bleeding Awesome :D Is there a particular reason for the gory theme in the latter? In any case, I love splatters. Great Job thar Alex!

Got some new brushes and stuff, was just trying them out. Lol.

I think the Sonic one's turned out the best I've done of these in a long while - very proud of that one.

Incidentally, looking for requests again for practice. Wallpapers, sig images, avatars, etc, will have the fastest turnaround time - but I can stretch to quite a lot of varied things if the request demands it. So, fire away.

Let me be the first! ;D

*Points to her topic in the staff room*

Make me a nifty avatar-like thing for Pokemon Winter Tournament news posts? :3

And... hrm... What's the chance you could make me a signature displaying 8 of my favourite Pokemon and my screen name with the Triforce behind it? (Raichu, Ivysaur, Charizard, Snorlax, Lucario, Heracross, Onix, Vaporeon) The pics could overlap/fade into each other, and I'd let you decide if you wanted to work with sprites, 3D models, Sugi art, or Anime-style images.

That an alright request? :)

As good as usual, Alex.
I really like the banner you made for Katie. The shadows on all those pokemon give a wonderful effect.
The cup is great, too!

Ok, this is a bit stupid to say to a staff member, but:
Keep it up! :D

"Follow me, my Pokemon! To battle we go! >:D" ... is one way I can interpret that new signature, lol.

I must say, that is not what I was expecting at all. Instead, it's better. I knew you were having issues trying to figure out how to work it, so the fact that you came up with this idea at all is pretty cool. What's more, it's almost like a banner or mini-wallpaper, which is really quite original as far as signature images go. I love that background, too: nice open sky, and that tree... Heh. What did you get it from, or did you scratch it...?

I love how you tried to keep the Pokemon to scale, even if the quality took a bit of a blow on Snorlax and Onix (totally unavoidable, so no complaints here). Great choice of sprite poses overall as well. The Lucario is

The background image is stock from dA: http://ajk-original-stock.deviantart.com/art/Background-stock-2-80868869

As for the scaling, I think Snorlax just about gets away with it as there's really not a lot of detail available to see. I justified Onix in my head by the fact that a big snake made out of rocks probably would look pretty rough or something. Lol.

I tried to attack this from the same design principles I'm currently being taught, so there are only two visual elements; the Gestalt laws are obeyed as much as aesthetically possible:

    * Law of Closure — The mind may experience elements it does not perceive through sensation, in order to complete a regular figure (that is, to increase regularity).
    * Law of Similarity — The mind groups similar elements into collective entities or totalities. This similarity might depend on relationships of form, color, size, or brightness.
    * Law of Proximity — Spatial or temporal proximity of elements may induce the mind to perceive a collective or totality.
    * Law of Symmetry (Figure ground relationships)— Symmetrical images are perceived collectively, even in spite of distance.
    * Law of Continuity — The mind continues visual, auditory, and kinetic patterns.
    * Law of Common Fate — Elements with the same moving direction are perceived as a collective or unit.

- And the entire thing is kept extremely simple.

Like the banner I did for Ruko, the juxtaposition of Pokemon - especially sprites - on real world images intrigues me, and I'll aim to attempt more stuff based on that idea.

So: Any more requests?

Hey.

You want a request....here we go..

I'd like a Banner for The Lonely God. Ideas I ahve had so far involve this image

journeys-end-01.jpg

(Although any other picture of the Doctor looking suitably moody would do.)

If possible pictures of the other characters (Rose,Martha, Jack, Mickey, Jackie, Donna) in the background would be awesome, with a faded effect on them.

Text wise, the new who logo and the title "The Lonely God" in a suitably Who font.

Thankies.

Dude, Alex...

Usually an over usage of gray/white shades can give off a cold, steel-like feel to a site, but the shading and design you went for makes it feel less cold and more professional. I really enjoy the touch with the chain and the clickable links hanging down like tags (makes the page feel fun and lively), and - while subtle - the green logo and shiny gold color of the tags go nicely with the gray tones.

I think it looks excellent :)

Btw - since I can't clearly make it out, what's the background of?

I'm liking that design very much, 'tis a very good portfolio page.

I like the 'laid back' text, the narrative is very easy to relate to. I also like the 'blog' tag. It's slightly off centre, and the only tag that's angled, it reminds me of good old Golden Section.

I like the portfolio page, mostly because of the chains and stuff. It'd be cool if the tags would wiggle when you moused over them... that has to be hard to do. And yeah, I'm loving it.

Looks very nice and professional Alex. Very slick and compact too. None of the over the top, huge wall of text ones that are boring. Love how it's quick, simple and straight to the point.

Gotta love the direct approach.
