Kosa Island: a small, peculiar, banana-shaped island hidden right in the middle of the grand South Blue. Warm sparkling waves seem to guide people from all ends of the sea to its alluring white sand beaches. It was originally discovered by a shipwrecked adventurer who one day woke up to find himself slumbering on the sands of this tropical paradise who sustained himself on the various rare native bounties of the island, including an especially odd fruit that blessed him with the strange power to draw people or things to him like a beacon of sorts. It was because of this gift that throughout the years many lost souls looking for a chance to make their mark found themselves drawn to the island and settling into it to establish one of the most prolific marketplaces in the entire world.

However, on this particular day there was a commotion beyond the typical bustling of the busy shoppers and vendors. Right in the center of a plaza, a boy with copper whip-like arms clashed with another who wielded a yari. The one with dark brown hair could be heard angrily shouting about how the other had stolen his pork buns while the other smirked as he seemed to be enjoying the fight.

“Double Tap.” Korai, the spear-wielder, weaved between the cooper whips of his opponent and thrusted his yari towards his opponent Yama’s stomach.

He twisted just in time to avoid puncturing any major organs, but he was unable to avoid the attack in it’s entirety as the yari punctured the right side of his abdomen.

“Aaugh... you’re gonna pay for that.” Yama hissed at Korai. He jumped up before the second strike could reach him and prepared his counter attack.

“Squid.” Yama’s fingers all grew into large cooper tentacles that wrapped around Korai’s yari and drove it into the ground.

Using the planted spear as leverage, Yama turned himself sideways so his legs were square to his opponent. “Goat.” He extended both legs and kicked Korai in the chest to knock him backwards into the sea of vendors.

A marine ship moved across the southern ocean, piloted by corrupted marines and making its way toward the Grand Line. On it, two marines walked towards the brig of the ship, which was littered with slaves. Between the marine's stood a mink, the wolf kind specifically, who, despite his stature, trembled like a lost child. The cell door was opened, and the two men shoved the mink inside, who didn't so much as struggle at the treatment. The mink, named Loufe, looked up at the dreary faces as his fellow slaves, most of which looked back, with a few ignoring him. Without saying anything, Loufe made his way toward an empty corner and curled up there, still trembling, on the verge of tears.

"Aw, what a lovely day..."

An older gentleman in a stylish kimono walked by the docks of Kosa Island, with a picture frame in one hand and a stand in another. Strapped with a bag of supplies over the shoulder he moved to set up shop as he overlooked the beautiful open sea. The man whose wrinkles and scars told tales more than words ever could, yet he seemed to be at peace if that smile on his face was any indication.

Haru Yamamoto, a man who had just reached his sixtieth birthday, decided to celebrate the occasion with the one thing that filled his heart with joy more than any other passion. With his canvas planted and his brush drawn, Haru began to paint the scenery before him as the beautiful ocean he overlooked offered boundless inspiration. Though as activity began to spring to life around him he may find newfound inspiration yet to come from the land around him.

Crashing into a cluster of crates filled with assorted fruits and vegetables, Korai let out an "oof!" upon making impact, and once the dust clouds kicked up by the collision subsided amidst the surprised, angry shouts of food vendors, the yari-wielder was seen back on his feet, bouncing lightly in a fighting position with a smirk on his face. The rather rambunctious fellow standing before him had been constantly shouting angrily about some "pork buns"; Korai hadn't seen any, nor had he eaten any, but the fight that had consequently broken out had been too entertaining to avoid.

His yari was embedded in the ground, likely difficult to remove from its current location; levelling a cool stare at Yama, Korai suddenly leapt at his opponent diving at the concrete in front of where Yama stood. Stretching out his left arm, he planted his hand onto the ground and spun, kicking with one leg at Yama's shin to make him falter, then kicking with the next by aiming a back kick to his stomach. The attack was supposed to push Yama back an acceptable distance, leaving Korai enough time to dislodge his yari and regain equal footing in the fight. However, upon striking what seemed like rigid steel, his sly grin faltered for a brief moment. Wincing in pain, Korai spun one more time before landing on his feet as his smirk returned and he glared at Yama, who had been pushed back mere inches. "Tough guy, aren't ya?"

Yanking his yari out of the ground, he suddenly jumped and flipped back, landing quite a distance away from Yama and breaking into a sprint. Leaping at the boy once again, Korai now brandished his spear in a reverse grip, and as he approached his opponent, he thrust the weapon down at his torso. "Harpoon!"

Holy crap. This guy is FAST. A highly contested fight was something Yama seldom encountered in these beginning stages of his adventure and, unlike his counterpart who was a natural fighter, Yama did not particularly enjoy the prospect of putting his life on the line in a heated battle.

Utilizing the malleable nature of his body, Yama narrowly avoided being skewered by bending backwards in a limbo position until he was parallel to the ground.

That was too close. Yama looked up with a feeling of fear as the yari passed mere inches above his eyes and cut through lagging strands of hair. I need to end this now.

He planted one arm on the ground and used it to pivot sideways, morphing his leg into a copper whip in the process.

“Python!”

He swung his leg into Korai who had been left vulnerable after missing his attack and sent the spearman crashing into yet another market stand. But as the dust cleared his opponent still stood unfazed. In fact, it almost looked as if the clash energized the boy as his signature smirk had grown even larger.

“The hell is wrong with you!? You could’ve killed me!” Yama screamed, not realizing the hypocrisy that he started the fight and had just delivered a kick that would have crushed the average man’s ribs.

“I’ve had enough of this guy.” Yama muttered. His hands transformed into points like viper fangs, but just as he prepared himself to deliver a finishing blow a stern voice cut stopped Yama in his tracks.

“FREEZE! We have you surrounded!”

Having been consumed in the chaos of his brawl, Yama had completely lost sight of his surrounding area and was surprised by the appearance of a perimeter of marines aiming their guns at he and Korai. It only made sense that the marines had been called. After all, a fair number of vendor stands laid ruined as casualties of their fight.

A devilish grin broke out on Yama’s face as he looked at the guns pointed at Korai. These bullets would hardly effect him, but his opponent was not so fortunate.

“Hehehe. Take your best shot!” Yama taunted, giggling as he ran towards Korai to divert their aim towards the boy’s flesh.

Ah, the spirit of youth. Haru could not help but let out a chuckle as a fight seemed to break out on the docks though the amusement seemed to fade quickly when Marines trained a pair of guns upon them. One of them seemed undeterred by this and even tried to provoke fire along the other or least he presumed given the way he taunted and ran as Haru sighed.

Much as Murphy's Law is just begging for one of their heads, he figured he should step in. Folding up his mural he moved along and quickly waved his hands in the air casual as can be in spite of the growing tense situation.

"Hey, seems you good boys & gals have your hands full. Well don't worry, these two are mine, just a bit of spirited sparring as it were. A bit overly playful for their own good really. I'll accept whatever fine for disturbing the peace, and take them off your hands." Haru said with a wide grin though he passed a subtle look to the pair to play along with this for now. If all went well, this whole mess could be resolved without one bullet being fired and he had chance to get back to what he preferred.

Yama's sudden outburst had startled Korai for a brief moment, the irony of his angered yells prompting a hearty laugh from the spear-wielder. He wiped away a tear, still chuckling to himself as he dusted himself off after crashing into yet another food vending stand.

"'Could've killed me', he says... ah, that's rich."

After regaining his bearings, Korai sighed and stretched, feeling and hearing audible pops in his back, arms, and neck. Disregarding the store owner's furious curses, he had been ready to spring back into action, but his charge was cut abruptly short by the sound of multiple Marines circling the two, rifles at the ready. An unfamiliar man had also entered the scene, claiming both Korai and Yama had been with him and engaged in a casual sparring session; with a furrowed brow, the spear-wielder began to fire a curt retort when, once again, he was interrupted by a new situation. With the Marines' rifles focused on the two troublemakers, Yama had intended to divert their aim to both him and Korai; while Yama's tough skin would keep him safe from harm, Korai had very normal, very human flesh that would indeed hurt if pierced with bullets. However...

"Whoa, whoa! Don't think I'll make using me as a target easy!"

Taking a page out of Yama's book, Korai kept pace with the metal boy, taking point in forming both of their routes. He made a beeline for a random Marine, and as the other soldiers had no choice but to avoid endangering their own men, the helpless Marine watched with terror as the two boys dashed at him. Eyes shining with almost malicious glee, Korai flashed a wild grin as he drew his spear back, continuing to run before aiming a nasty swing with the blunt edge of his weapon. The poor soldier had no choice but to take the hit, as he was in no space to counter an attack from such close proximity, and as the air was knocked out of his lungs, he was knocked aside, hurtling on a direct path for an unfortunate wooden easel carrying a nearly finished oil painting....

Haru’s subtle look went completely unnoticed to the oblivious boy who was somehow even more dense than the metal he was made of as he was focused on the geezer’s attire.

Fancy kimono, sword, topknot... could it be...? Is this guy a SAMURAI!?

The boy’s eyes visibly began to sparkle as he recalled stories of the noble and powerful warriors. “No fair! I didn’t know your grandpa’s a samurai!!!” He shouted to Korai and began running after him, extending his wiry arm to clasp onto Korai’s spear. Unfortunately, he had grabbed hold moments too early, and as the spearman swung his weapon Yama was slung behind it with a whiplike effect and found himself being launched towards a small unit of marines.

“Woah! Hahaha! What a ride!” Yama laughed in glee as he sat up to see himself surrounded by a pile of rubble and injured marines. He smiled to himself as he looked at the red eyed boy. Perhaps he had misjudged his opponent, after all, his grandpa was apparently a samurai and it wasn’t everyone who shared Yama’s disregard for the marine’s authority.

I wonder if he’d wanna join my crew...?

Well that went about as well as one could have hoped...

Haru sighed at the predictable result as the two seemed intent on fighting each other as really he could and likely should have left them to face the consequences with the Marines on hand. Really he had no business in this scenario as it was, but part of him seemed to want to avoid a needless brawl on the dock as these things tended to escalate beyond ho hum amusing to tragic as all it took was one trigger slip and a mistime dodge for things to go south.

Haru sighed, as he decided to intervene. He showed a shocking if subtle display of quickness as he moved between the pair and grabbed each on the wrist.

"Anyway, boys, let's uh settle this dispute somewhere else. A pleasure officers." Haru said with a sheepish if not cheeky tone as he tried to "motion" for the pair to follow him.

Sora glanced behind her at the chaos she had unintentionally caused by snatching someone’s lunch. Oops... didn’t know he’d get so upset, what’s the big deal... She slunk into an alley, the smell of the pork buns rich in her nose. She flicked her tail and growled at a child who seemed to want to pet her and sped up, wanting to get out of the area. She paused out of plain sight to readjust the blanket concealing her tightly folded wings before picking up the pork buns again and heading towards the dock where she’d left her small fishing boat. Sure hope he doesn’t notice me... or the Marines for that matter, knowing them they’ll end up asking who I belong to, which is just... embarrassing.

My grandpa..? Wait, does he mean that old geezer who was painting something earlier? I don't know him at all!

Now watching the airborne Yama get flung into a group of Marines, knocking them over, Korai chuckled with fascination at the curiosity of his opponent. It wasn't every day he met another kid with just as much of a fighting spirit as him--though he was certain his was stronger. Well, Yama was also probably not as bright; he hadn't seen his lunch get snatched up by something that was not Korai and had.... immediately pinned it on Korai. Either way, the spear-wielder wasn't yet satisfied with the fight; as his bright crimson eyes flashed with determination, Korai tightened his grip on his spear with a wild grin before lunging at Yama....

At least, he had tried to, before a sudden hand closing down on his wrist completely killed his momentum. Turning abruptly to identify the one who had so rudely interrupted a good fight, Korai was surprised to see the aforementioned “samurai grandpa” leading both him and Yama away from the docks. Still giddy from the adrenaline of battle, Korai’s mental age seemed to drop several years, now shouting in protest like a ten-year-old child.

Who does this guy think his is?! I’ll cut him up for interrupting the fight—just when it was getting good, too...

Harphina bode her time, uninterested in the new prisoner—Loufe—or any of the other prisoners, for that matter. Unlike the other prisoners aboard the ship, the buxom seal-mink was here willingly. Very willingly; and so, the girl was naturally at peace with the situation. Besides, while the other prisoner's might not know it, they would all be freed soon enough.

'The darkest spot is under the lamp.' That was one of the many new things—a saying—Harphina had learned after leaving her far-remote tribe. Though short-lived, the girl had spent quite some time traveling the seas, exploring and experiencing the many different cultures and climates scattered across the sea's islands. Her journeys had been going well. Key word had, because as she drew closer to civilization proper, she began to notice the dark-side of society. Thieves & Thugs, Scammers & Scoundrels. Harphina had spent no small sum of time brutalizing those ilk, who'd suffered the misfortune of misjudging her as easy prey. However, what she was about to do now wasn't because of petty thieves or street-side scammers. This was bigger than that.

The Seal-mink peered around the room, taking in the varied races, all huddled in the brig of a marine ship. All of them were slaves; commodities to be sold to the highest bidder; their lives stripped away from them because the world government had deemed them less than human.

The very though brought a toothy-snarl to the mink's jaws. Disgusting.

Harphina had long since condemned the World Government, and by extension the marines, as nothing more than malefactors. She had promptly and loudly spoken out against then in the last town they'd been in, but she'd only managed to get herself thrown in here. Though the seal mink was confident she could've escaped if she'd reached the water, she had decided not to. Since the authorities were nothing good, then she figured she'd do everyone a favor...

Turning to the window—way too small to ventilate the dank and musty brig—and looking at the sky, Harphina smiled softly.

"Tonight's a full moon..."

"If you want the freedom to do as you wish merely play along. I'm sure you'd rather not deal with Marines breathing down your neck or perhaps you'd prefer to have a bayoneted tip to your back."

Haru snuck his hushed whisper to the boy as he seemed to cry his protests as he offered his piece of advice which he figured would help the pair in the long run. Though given how often these types of youths tended to think after they act he knew the possibility of his words falling on deaf ears had been a possibility. Least he could have done was make the effort to keep the peace so that his conscious could rest easier even if only on a principal level.

Course, keeping these two calm as he tried to leave the scene had been but one issue. These Marines were another, hopefully they'd simply let the situation diffuse naturally and would allow him to escort the boys away, though he figured given how the situation played out usually in such circumstances he had not been prepared to expect an easy exit.

WOAH! Is this the agility of a samurai!?

Yama’s eyes sparkled in amazement as, in an instant, he had been pulled up by Haru and found himself in a new location. He would have been delighted to follow the mysterious old man, but unfortunately the good intentions of Haru were lost on the remaining marines who pointed guns at the trio and were prepared to fire at the slightest hint of resistance.

“Freeze! Attempting to flee with criminals makes you an accomplice. Hand them over now!”

Whatever.... Yama sighed. He had grown quite numb to the countless empty threats of the marines over the years. His eyes wandered around out of boredom when a peculiar scene caught his eye.

About half the distance between the market place and the docks trotted a wolf covered by a blanket. That would’ve been strange enough as that species was not native to the tropical island, but what Yama cared about far more was the basket it held in its mouth.

Are those...? He wondered as he squinted at the creature.

They are!

“Hey, you! GIVE ME BACK MY LUNCH!!!” Yama shouted and lurched towards the thief, completely oblivious that his actions had just set off a chain reaction that pulled Yama and Haru with him and triggered the marines to open fired.

A shout from Sora’s left side caused her to turn suddenly, recognizing the scent as the boy who she’d stolen from. Ah, crap. She set the basket of pork buns down, drawing it closer with one paw, before barking violently at the boy. With any luck, he’ll just think I’m a dog... or not, the Marines are there too. Perfect. Just perfect. Even if I manage to get away, I won’t be able to outrun that many Marines. Not to mention how close these bullets are getting... I can heal, yeah, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less. I need to fly... but that would blow my cover, there are still some herbs I need to get... dammit! Well, it’s not like I have many choices at this point... She continued to bark at the boy, taking half a step forward, fur bristling, to hopefully intimidate him into backing down so she could make a break for her skiff.

Spectacular. Just spectacular.

Haru had little time to dwell on this change of events, those events being the Marines being ever trigger happy some thief who seemed to startle one of the almost suicidality eager boys he formally had in his grasp as now it seemed that all hell had broken loose as a sigh escaped his lips just before the first gun fired.

Oh well, he supposed somethings could not be helped.

With a swift motion he drew his blade, a curious blade that seemed made of wood compared to contemporary steel but in spite of the unorthodox craftsmanship it proved quite effective as Haru's quick speed and sharp reflexes were highlighted once more as he managed to use his blade to deflect the bullets from the Marine's rifles before he knocked their guns out of their hands in a seamless motion. Before the Marines had a chance to respond, he would aim to swift strike each one with blunt blows to the neck or solar plexus as he aimed to (relative) painless knockouts.

Within what seemed like but a minute, the Marines that aimed fire upon them had been bested, though Haru seemed more annoyed than having any sort of feeling of accomplishment as the elder extended his wooden blade aiming to tuck it under the back of the collar of Yama's shirt as he tried to pull him back before he ran off to cause more trouble with the thief as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

"It's a wonder one as spirited as yourself hasn't ended up dead by now." Haru muttered as he tried to pull him back before he made the situation worse, though that thief had his eye much as he tried not let his gaze linger.

“Let me go old man!” Nothing in heaven or hell, much less a man 40 years his senior, could prevent the famished Yama from reaching his next meal. He planted one foot firmly in the ground and turned and jump to perform a roundhouse kick that knocked the wooden sword that was restraining him and continued his charge at the thief.

Marine bullets ricocheted off his metallic body, but the minor pain was unable to provide a proficient deterrent as it merely felt like hail against his metallic skin. An unfortunate marine stood in his path, whose head was used as a spring bored to launch off of before preforming a flip midair and bringing an extended copper leg crashing down towards the burgling dog.

"This kid is gonna be the death of me..." Haru mused with an annoyed sigh, he had a respect for life and preferred to prevent senseless tragedy but this suicidal bravado pushed even his great patience to their limits. For the moment he merely focused on blocking shots fired his way by the marines as he allowed Yama to advance forward as he seemed to possess some sort of metallic skin. which was cause enough to raise an eyebrow.

Huh, that's curious. Could this be one of those curses of the devil...

Cruel as it may have been perhaps this was natural selection working its course as he allowed Yama to go nuts, for the time being anyway though he hoped for opportunity to deescalate the situation.

"Well, it's not like Marines are that intimidating; just knock their guns away and they'll start sniveling like childreOI WHAT'RE YOU DOING--"

Suddenly, Korai felt his body abruptly jerk to the side like a ragdoll as Yama's loud voice rang out once again. The sudden movement startled the Marines, who immediately brandished their rifles and pointed them at the trio. However, Korai then felt Haru's grip on him loosen before the old man suddenly lashed out and incapacitated the surrounding Marines with ease. Brushing himself off as he watched, Korai regained his bearings after stumbling a few steps forward and whistled in fascination upon seeing Haru's swift movements.

Of course, there remained the matter of the still angry Yama, but Haru seemed to have taken care of that as well. Korai hadn't seen the true thief of Yama's pork buns, but it seemed that the other boy had and now initiated pursuit. Yama had even lashed out and whipped his metallic leg downward onto the culprit, who revealed itself to be.... a dog?

Korai hadn't shared Haru's sentiment in standing by and allowing the rambunctious Yama to inflict what punishment he desired, especially on a smaller animal and considering the trivial cause of this entire ordeal.

"ARE YOU STUPID?!"

Immediately wresting himself from Haru's hand on his collar, Korai lunged forward past the now footstool-ed Marine in the blink of an eye and put himself between Yama and his target. With both arms outstretched, he aimed to block the copper guy's attack and grab his leg; upon doing so, he would then step forward, using his momentum to press a forearm against Yama's chest and push him to the ground.

Sora ceased barking abruptly as the two promptly began fighting again. It seemed like one of them had turned into a pliable metal, and she winced internally as she imagined the punch it would pack if she were hit. She turned tail, picking up the basket of pork buns, and started running as fast as she could... right into the legs of a Marine. More of them were headed towards the commotion from other directions, and the one she had run into grabbed a handful of her fur.

“Hey!” he called out to any onlookers. “Anyone know someone who’s lost a pet d—OUCH!” Sora had bitten down hard on the arm holding her fast. He let go reflexively, and she darted back, caught between a rock and a hard place. The fight behind her, a pissed-off Marine ahead, more coming up behind him. I’ll take the fight, thank you. I’ll have to come back to study more plants someday, but for now I have to get off this island. Going hungry for a day is the least of my problems now. She left the basket of pork buns where it was and ran towards the two duking it out before slipping lithely between them with one flap of her wings, positioned to stop one with her head and the other with a hind leg.

“Will you two quit making a scene?” she growled through gritted teeth. “It was hard enough sneaking past the Marines before you two decided to start brawling about twenty feet from the docks. Take your stupid pork buns back, I can go steal from someone else for my meal on the way to the next island.”

“Woah! You can talk!?” The wings went completely unnoticed to Yama who was enamored by the speaking animal. He gritted his teeth and tried to pivot his body midair to avoid smashing the dog that ever so foolishly ran between the two boys attacking each other.

His metallic leg slammed into the ground next to Sora and sent up shards of earth and a cloud of dust. What are they thinking? I could’ve killed them!

Yama, however, would not be afforded the pleasantry of getting to dwell on the past. The dust cleared and gave way to a reinforced marine group, including a large bearded man wielding a deadly looking scythe. He was the captain of the marine base stationed at the island and was not too happy to have been woken from his afternoon nap due to a major disturbance.

Uh oh. Things just got serious.

“For too long have thugs like you made a mess on my island! All four of you are under arrest!” The captain slammed his scythe into the ground, the raw strength of the attack causing the ground to rumble. Yama knew he was outmatched and smirked to Korai.

“Hey, spear guy. I can kick your butt later, let’s have a truce for now.”

As he avoided the copper leg that was swung down onto the concrete next to him, Korai turned to glance at the animal that had stolen Yama's lunch as the latter voiced fascination at the creature. It had spoken, interceding between both Korai and Yama, which gave the spear wielder a chance to take in the full sight of... whatever Sora was.

...You know what, I'm not even gonna try; I have no clue what this is.

Suddenly, the ground shook with the impact of something struck upon it, and Korai turned to see the ever so annoying captain of the Marines, brandishing that scythe with all the exaggerated swagger of a heavyset sailor. Yama had turned to grin at Korai, proposing a truce for now, and Korai let out an amused scoff before drawing his own weapon and getting into a fighting stance.

"No you can't, but I'd rather not get arrested today."

At this point calling it natural selection would be a touch too kind...

Haru sighed as once more, his efforts seemed to fall on deaf ears as these two continued their scrap with the marines and now a new face seemed to enter the fray. A furry individual who seemed to be some sort of beast-woman, but this sight proved far from the most concerning one as it seemed the captain of this marine group who had a scythe of all things walked over and once more the boys proved committed to their act of willful reckless abandon as Haru sighed out.

At this point, he figured that he'd be seen as an accomplice with them given his earlier disarming of the marines, so even if he had turned to leave them to their fate he'd likely be hunted down next. And Haru would rather not spend time in a cell again, so begrudgingly the old man advanced with his wooden katana as he assumed a defensive stance.

"Don't suppose I could sway you with a fine to overlook this trouble?" Haru asked, a touch sincere but mostly with heavy sarcasm as he figured he knew these types well enough to know that had been an assured pipe dream.

“You dare insult my integrity!?” Howled the captain as he gripped his scythe with two hands and swung it backwards. “The lot of you will be an offering to the one true god: Justice!”

He brought the weapon forward in an upward arc, sending slicing gusts of wind that tore through the earth and any other obstacle at the row of criminals in front of him. “Howling Wolf Cyclone!”

“Spider Nest!” Yama’s fingers split at their tips and created dozens of thin copper wires that covered his body, but while they succeeded in protecting him from getting cut, they were simply unable to counter the raw power of the attack and Yama was blown back into a nearby fruit stand, causing the structure to crumble upon impact.

Hmmm, maybe we should all just try to run. I don’t know how we can beat this guy.

"Yeah why did I expect any less..." Haru said with a sigh as this as he quickly moved with deceptive speed for his age as he worked to avoid the whirlwind that seemed to be produced from his attack and one of the group was knocked into a fruit cart which seemed to just sum up this day so well.

Been way too long since I've had a proper battle, not the ideal way to shake off rust but either this or a decapitation so...

With a sigh he clutched his bamboo weapon as he began to shuffle towards the Captain, his aim simply and seemingly to get to him from the side as he raised his weapon prepared to strike.

"Withered Willow....Timeless Strike!"

The old man than, in what seemed almost a flash, appeared right inside the guard of the captain displaying a limited speed "dash" as he aimed to strike with his weapon right across the chest of the Marine.
