Alex watched from the small tunnel into the stadium with bright brown eyes as two elite trainers battled with their incredibly strong pokemon. A Venusaur was launching leafy attacks at a Dragonite as it soared around the battlefield. As the dragon temporarily haulted to launch its own attack, the Venusaur began quickly charging a glowing attack within the flower on its back. There was a cry from the Dragonite's trainer, but there was little it could do to avoid the Solar Beam launched towards it at light speed. It hit the ground hard, and the fight resumed at ground level.
"Rhy," Alex's pokemon broke her trance with its deep rumbling voice and a soft bump of its rocky head against her leg. Still nearly falling over, she quickly recovered and looked down at Ryan, who seemed a bit nervous.
"Don't worry bud, I'm sure our first battle won't be nearly so intense," she smiled, rubbing its head. "Maybe one day we'll be as strong as those guys, though." Looking up, she could see other beginner league competitors standing around with their own pokemon, many of them a few years younger than herself. It didn't bother her much, though, she had known coming into this that she was going to be the late bloomer. That just meant she could prove herself by rising even quicker through the ranks.
Her attention was drawn back to the battle at the sound of loud gasps and a few screams. However, it was not the sound of an awestruck crowd, but a sound of terror. On the battlefield had appeared a strange man, tall and clad in a dark cloak covering most of his body, up to his chin, with his only really defining features his long, electric blue hair and golden eyes, standing between the two battling pokemon, who were looking a bit shocked. Beside him was... it seemed to be an Alakazam, but there was something strange about it. It hovered over the ground with a large white beard and several spoons floating over its head. It emanated a dark essence that unsettled Alex and just about everyone one else around.
"What's going on?" she muttered as Ryan took a few steps forward, seeming to put itself between the pokemon and his trainer.
"Welcome!" the stranger boomed, "To the new age of Cipher!" The man produced a strange purple pokeball from his cloak, his hand shiny and metallic beneath it. Suddenly, he launched the ball at the Venusaur, a wicked spin on it and casting an odd orange glow from his hand. The ball hit the pokemon and fell open, and for a moment, nothing happened, and all was silent.
"HA! Don't you know you can't-" The Venusaur's trainer started, but his words died in his throat as his pokemon glowed white, and disappeared into the other pokeball. The crowd went crazy, outraged and horrified shouts echoing around the stone structure. The other trainer in the ring reacted quickly, his Dragonite launching a powerful Dragon attack at the strange man and his pokemon. The shadowy mega pokemon reacted with incredible speed, matching the attack with a dark purple energy of its own, splitting the attack like a hot knife slicing through butter and crashing into the dragon, sending it flying into its trainer. The odd man had picked up the pokeball with the Venusaur, ignoring its shocked former trainer and seeming not to care about the attack that had been made on him. As he turned back, he launched another ball at the Dragonite, easily capturing it.
At this point, it seemed everyone had snapped out of their stupor, and many spectators began scrambling to leave. However, the man began to walk rather calmly away from the battle, followed by his pokemon, as a large group of people rushed into the coliseum, all dressed in similar outfits (official Pokemon XD art). They produced their own shadowy looking pokemon, beginning to terrorize the frantic audience.
Alex watched with a bit of horror at first, then her face hardened. "We have to help!" she declared, turning to the other beginning trainers. Not waiting for a response, she flung a leg over her Rhyhorn. "Let's go help!" she ordered. The pokemon didn't so much as hesitate to charge out into the ring, not even waiting for his trainer to get off before launching a Horn Attack at a Hoothoot. Suddenly, Alex found herself facing down both the pokemon and its trainer, who looked surprised and a bit angry to see anyone daring to retaliate.
"What do you think you're doing, girl?!" he yelled angrily at her, as his pokemon launched a shadow attack right at Ryan.
