The World of Poke-Sync

Poke-Sync is set ten years after the events of the eighth-generation games Sword/Shield; but, there are a few changes to the timeline that 'enhance' the Pokemon experience.

Background

Twelve years ago a new strain of viruses infiltrated the world from Ultra Space through the Ultra Wormholes in Alola. The viruses went completely undetected until all at once, after the second advent of the Darkest Day and the resulting fiasco in Galar, their effects began to show in both humans and Pokemon.

Collectively dubbed the Pokeviruses, they caused Pokemon across to world to grow both mentally and physically: becoming more intelligent and growing larger than what was previously thought possible, some in their final stage of evolution even doubling in size overnight. However, the cost for this was energy; Pokemon grew ravenous. Over the following weeks, the Pokemon began to consume so much it appeared they would eat their trainers out of house and home; and some, in their desperation, had even turned their fangs upon their very trainers... but the situation became even worse when wild Pokemon arrived.

Once peaceful Pokemon fell upon villages and towns in a starved frenzy. Trainers responded and a chaotic melee between trained pokemon and wild hordes ensued; without energy, moves and abilities soon faltered and failed. On both sides, Pokemon exhausted themselves, but desperation drove them forward. The battle continued with Pokemon relying on their natural weapons: claws and fangs, bodies of steel and fire.

Amidst the confusion, the first Bonds emerged. Powerful trainers, Champions, and Gym leaders had found some way to resupply their Pokemon with energy, and now reinvigorated, they beat back the wild hordes. In aftermath of the battle, the still stunned humans discovered the effects the viruses had on them.

Their bodies were now able to produce a new energy, dubbed 'Fortitude'. Trainers found that this new energy could be used to offset the energy their Pokemon expended to power their moves and abilities. However, this energy did not come cheap, and losing too much energy carried severe consequences for both humans and pokemon, the most severe cases resulting in death or coma...

The extreme circumstances forced all the major Regions to collaborate. Led by the acting Champions and Pokemon Professors, the source of the Pokeviruses was discovered and the Ultra Wormholes sealed in an event known as the Ultra Wars.

Many years have passed since then and the world has returned to a state of relative normalcy, but the threats of the past still linger in present memory...

The Synchronization Bond

At present day, the energy-sharing process pionered nearly a decade ago has been perfected. When a trainer catches a Pokemon they are able to, with the aid of a new series of Pokeballs, establish what is known as a Synchronization Bond. The Synchronization Bond establishes a telepathic link between trainer and pokemon and through this bond, the trainer can both communicate with and provide energy to their Pokemon.
The Creation of the Synchronization Bond consumes a significant amount of energy and can be a stressful ordeal for new trainers, resulting in fatigue, sickness, and extreme nausea.
From then on the Pokemon will passively draw from its trainer's energy to sustain itself and will actively draw from the trainer's energy to exert the power of its moves and abilities. (This is a means of implementing a PP System.)
Through training trainers can strengthen themselves and their pokemon, increasing the amount of energy they can produce in order to sustain more pokemon and use stronger moves or forms.

The Start of the RP

Poke-Sync will begin with your OC receiving their Trainer Card, which certifies them as a Pokemon Trainer registered with the United League. Now that they've been registered, their trainer ID can be used to log into the United Pokemon League's App—available on any Rotom Phone, Poketch, Pokegear, C-Gear, or X-transceiver.

Important information that'll be helpful on your journey will occasionally be announced through this app: Pokemon Hordes or Swarms, Suspected Locations for Hidden Grottos, etc.

But before you can set out on your journey, you'll need to obtain a Pokemon. Duh! With Pokemon more aggressive than ever before it's dangerous for an un-aided human to wander into their territory. Some of you will have family or friends who can help you catch or obtain a Pokemon, great! For those of you who don't, don't worry; the Pokemon Project is here to help! The United League's App allows registered trainers to adopt their first Pokemon from its custody and their Pokeball will be delivered to your local Pokemart in a matter of hours!

The Internation/United Pokemon League

After joining forces, the Pokemon Leagues across regions have permanently united under one banner. The United Pokemon League ensures that those do become trainers are ready to face new challenges that could emerge from extra-terrestrial threats such as Ultra-Space or Eternataus.
Trainers are thus ranked according to their strength:
1. Bronze
2. Silver
3. Gold
4. Platinum
5. Master
6. High Master
7. Grand Master
8. Legendary

Trainers may progress up to the Platinum Rank by completing the appopriately tiers league. (eg. Bronze tiers can advance to Silver by completing the Bronze League and Silver tiers can advance to gold by completing the Silver League)
At each tier after Bronze and up until Platinum, trainers will gain access to a new form of power:
Silver — Synchro Burst
Gold — Z–Moves
Platinum — Mega–Evolution

Once you've ascended to Platinum tier you'll find youself in the top percentage of Rattata Trainers! Matched only by the best of the best.
The base-line for becoming a Gym Leader is Master-tier and the weakest Elite Four are High Masters! Grand Masters are rarely seen beyond the active Champions and trainers as powerful as Red or Ethan/Gold are living Legends!
Please Note:
1. Syncro Burst, or Synchronization Burst, is a custom-power up and thus falls outside of Pokecharm's stated rules.
2. Z-move are allowed according the the Rules of Pokemon Role Play under the conditions that:
> Your character has been to Alola at some point to obtain a Z-ring from an Island Kahuna.
> Your Pokemon has a fitting Z-crystal and a move of the same type

3. Mega-Evolution must still be approved by Pokecharms admins before usage in RP.

Pokemon Project

The Pokemon Project is an endeavour by the United Pokemon League in collaboration with the Ranger Union and Pokemon Professors to find new homes for rescued, orphaned, or dependent Pokemon who don't have any where else to go. New Bronze-tier trainers can apply to have one of these pokemon as their starter, so long as that Pokemon complies with the Bronze League's regulations.

Advancing Rank

Your trainer rank is a measure of the skill and bond you share with your Pokemon. The most common measure for this is the strength you and your Pokemon have acquired through time and effort.
To advance in rank, a trainer needs to have at least three (3) Pokemon at the appropriate 'level'.
Note: Levels aren't a strict thing in RP but they're a good approximation of strength and when Pokemon should evolve and learn moves. Below are the 'level ranges' for the respective ranks:
  1. Bronze Rank — Pokemon Lv. 1 - 30
  2. Silver Rank — Pokemon Lv. 31 - 50
  3. Gold Rank — Pokemon Lv. 51 - 60
  4. Platinum Rank — Pokemon Lv. 61 - 70
  5. Master Rank — Pokemon Lv. 71 - 75
  6. High Master Rank — Pokemon Lv. 76 - 80
  7. Grand Master Rank — Pokemon Lv. 81 - 85
  8. Legendary Rank — Pokemon Lv. 85+

The Bronze League

The Bronze League is the beginning of every trainer's journey. Equipped only with the clothes on their back and whatever they can stuff into a single hiker's bag-pack, Bronze-tier trainers must participate in a regional race that will take them through the entire region. To qualify for the regional festival or conference, trainers must be amongst the first to obtain 8 Gym Badges or 5 Contest Ribbons.
Throughout their journey trainers will have to fend for themselves and manage their own resources. Aid from their family or people outside the League is prohibited.
The Bronze League separates those whose ambition will brave the highest mountains, the deepest oceans, and the thickest forests from those unsuited for the dangerous life of new-age trainers.

Gym Challenge

Reward: Gym Badge, $1,000

Contest Challenge

Reward: Ribbon, $1,000

Encrusted Challenge

So you're a hot-shot trainer, huh? Think you've got what it takes to be the very best? A legend in the making?
Prove it.

Encrusted Badges

The Gym Leaders across the regions are all at minimum, Master Rank trainers with years of experience and Pokemon befitting their status as some of the best trainers in their respective regions.
Gym Leaders don't have time to waste on every trainer with big balls and an even bigger ego, so the vast majority of trainers challenge the more manageable gym aides, less experienced trainers who are still qualified enough to test newbies like you.
But, if you think you've got what it takes, if you think the gym aides aren't good enough to test the likes of your distinguished self, then you can put your money where your mouth is; for a small fee of $1,000, the Gym Leader will personally deliver an ass-whooping you'll never forget.
The challenge fee is non-refundable; but, if you somehow eke out a win, you'll be rewarded with quintuple the amount you've spent and a covet Technical Record. A fair deal, no?
~~Subject to Change~~
Cost: $1,000
Reward: $5,000 + Technical Record Or Move Tutor Move
Alternate Reward: Pokemon Egg (Pokemon on Gym Leader's Team; can have Hidden Abilities & Egg Moves)

Encrusted Ribbon

The Encrusted Ribbon is only for the best and most exemplary of Coordinators. Although all of the top three Coordinators will earn themselves a contest ribbon, only the victor, rank one, will earn an Encrusted Ribbon.
~~Subject to Change~~
Reward: $50,000 + Ball Capsules & Seals
Alternate Reward: Egg Move Tutor

Rules

1. All Poke-Charms Global Rules Apply.
2. Romance allowed, but keep it PG-16.
3. Violence is allowed but again, stay within the limits outlined by the Rule of Roleplay.
4. Due to the dangerous nature of being a trainer, it's illegal for children under the age of 17 to bond with Pokemon. (minimum character age is 17.)
5. A Trainer's Fortitude acts as a natural soft-cap to their progression. Stronger Pokemon and moves consume more energy than weaker Pokemon and moves. Rookie trainers should not be able to easily use moves or pokemon far beyond their rank. i.e. no newbie trainer will have a Level 1 Brave Bird Pidgey or level 1 Dragonite, etc.
6. OCs are allowed to start with $5,000 and must draw from this fund to afford Food, Pokeballs, Potions, Repels, and any other amenities needed along their journey. A list of prices for Pokemon-related items will be provided, but prices for real-world items can be references through online stores such as Amazon.
7. Your starter can be any first-stage Pokemon (that is any Pokemon that is the first in its evolutionary line.) 8. Single-stage Pokemon aren't allowed (eg. Mawile, Absol, Sableye, Dunsparce, etc.)
9. Starters cannot have Hidden Abilities or Egg moves, but future pokemon will be allowed to have these.
10. Starter Pokemon will come from the Pokemon Project unless you want your starter to come from elsewhere. If your starter doesn't come from the Pokemon Project their origin will require some backstory. (i.e. your family breeds this type of pokemon or something.)
11. If anything confuses you, ask questions! I'll be happy to answer anything!
12. Please note Fakemon will not be allowed for this RP.

Considering that this roleplay takes place ten years from the second instance of the Darkest Day, trainers would have been at least seven years old at the time of that event, and lived through the whole apocalyptic situation, correct?

Also, just to clarify from what I read in the Region section, in-canon participants in this year's events can be from anywhere in the world, but will go to one region chosen by all the participants in a vote?

That's correct! How much the situation affected your character is up to you to determine though. If your character lives within a city then chances are they wouldn't be too affected as the trainers would've prevented too much damage.

That's correct. What I want to do is simulate an actual online debate/discussion in RP.

This will serve two purposes:

1. It will give us a fair way to choose which region we begin it.

2. It will allow the Ocs to interact with each and this is important because the Bronze League is a race in teams. This will be expounded on later in the RP. The discussion will let us see which characters get along and hopefully, that'll give us a good idea of which OCs will have good chemistry as traveling partners.

Will ask for reservation too, I think ^^
Noted!
Lemme reserve a spot too lmao

Yay! Is it alright if he eventually obtains battle bond? (Its been approved by Stellar)
Name: Acacia Song
Age: 17
Trainer Class: Battler
Goal: To reach legendary tier in order to engage in the most heated battles
Personality: A talented child limited by severe depression, Acacia lived most of his life just simply going through the motions never really feeling fulfilled. Soon enough, he will discover the rush he gets from using poké sync in battle and that will become his drug, pushing him farther and further in pursuit of ultimate strength so that he can engage in the most thrilling battles of them all.

Appearance: Acacia is just under six foot (though if you ask him he'll always round up) and his tanned skin hosts a reasonable amount of toned muscle. He allows his messy brown hair to hang down on his head, just long enough to cover up his bushy eyebrows that despite his attempts to pluck just won't go away, but not so long that it covers his piercing golden eyes. His face is fairly attractive, and despite its naturally circular shape, years of intensely chewing gum has allowed him to create a slightly more defined jawline. Still, the main thing that draws attention is the x shaped scar that lies below his left eye.

As far as clothing goes, Acacia likes to feel stylish and will change up his looks from day to day, though his white high top sneakers and thin gold necklace remain constant. On days where he has planned a big battle, Acacia normally wears a striped baseball jersey over a long-sleeved shirt, black sweatbands on each wrist, and black tech joggers. When battles reach their peak intensity Acacia will tie on a black headband decorated with the kanji for fire in orange.

Backstory: Acacia was born in Slateport City Hoenn the third of four children of two successful engineers. As the children of scholars, it was expected that each of the children would follow suite; however, all of them would find themselves completely infatuated with the idea of becoming pokemon trainers. Eventually their parents caved and one after another each child excelled in pokemon school, graduating with perfect marks before setting off on their own adventures, or at least that's what happened with the two eldest. See, Acacia was perhaps the most intelligent of all his siblings, but often those with great intelligence are unable to conform to set standards. Acacia amazed in the practice battles at the school, even beating students years older than him despite a type disadvantage all through strange strategies he devised, though his lack of caring for any sort of practical knowledge outside of battling led him to flunk out of his school's advanced program.

When Acacia had received the news that he was failing out from his teacher he slowly sauntered back to his home, mentally preparing himself for the scolding he was sure he would receive. However, on that same day, a flight had arrived from Kanto containing an old friend of Acacia's parents: Cinnabar's very own Blaine. The unexpected dinner guest bought Acacia a bit of time to stall his incoming punishment, and throughout the night he and Blaine became enamored with each other as they seemed to follow the same way of thinking. When Acacia could finally hold his secret no longer and confessed to his parents, Blaine burst out laughing and suggested the child come to Cinnabar with him and become his pupil.

Neither Acacia or his parent's thought twice, for the child it was a chance to learn from the first adult he felt actually understood him and for his parents it was the perfect opportunity to guiltlessly unload their problem child. A few days later Acacia found himself on a plane to the distant Kanto region.

It would turn out to be one of the best decisions of Acacia's life. Blaine was a great mentor to him, homeschooling the child in both fields of science and pokemon battling. When Acacia finally came of age, Blaine gifted the child a ticket to Pallet Town where he could properly begin his journey along with a premier ball containing a growlithe Acacia would nickname Windie. Man’s best friend proved to be true and the duo instantly seemed to click. Before sending the kid off on his journey, Blaine left him with his final words stating the duo had potential to unlock great strength.

Starter:

As long as it's been approved before hand. Though note trainers don't have access to the stronger power ups until they begin advancing in Rank.

So if the Pokémon comes from the Pokémon Project, we don’t need a backstory, right? Also, when do the trainers have to apply for a Pokémon?
You don't need a backstory if they come from Pokemon Project, but you can create a backstory to explain that Pokémon's personality or quirks if you'd like.

You can apply for Pokemon in your first post since you'd have already received your trainer card. That's why I said the pokemon would arrive with hours. With the pokeball teleporters shown in the anime, you could actually collect your starter minutes after selecting it.

Just collect your pokemon before the Bronze league officially starts (in a few days after trainers receive their cards.

Yes, even fossils. They only need to meet the Bronze League requirements.

First in their evolutionary line and not a single-stage pokemon. So no Aerodactyl, Dracovish, etc.

But Archen, Lileep, Anorith, etc. would qualify.
I was not going with Aerodactyl and the Galar fossils are abominations. This does open a lot of options though. Alright, I'm interested. Consider me joined

Previously Night's Shadow
Name: Paige Thurio

Gender: Female

Age: 17

Trainer Class (What goal do you have in mind for your character? Contests/Battler/Breeder/etc.): She aims to become a Pokémon professor, and sees the league challenge as a way to get there.

Physical Appearance: Pale skinned, with light green eyes. Her hair is a pale green that fades into an orange-pink at the tips of the loose twintails that hang down her back. She wears a pair of half-rimmed, rectangular glasses with pink and purple tassels hanging from the left side.

Clothing: Varies. Usually a comfortable shirt or sweater paired with black shorts or leggings.

Personality: Very research-oriented at first glance, Paige seems rather standoffish. But once you get to know her, she is eager to learn and takes constructive criticism without complaint. She is hardworking and bright, enjoying all matters of science including biology, computer science, and chemistry. She can get a little carried away when talking about her research, though, and has quite the hyperactive sweet tooth. She is usually seen with her nose in a book and religiously keeps a dream journal.

Backstory: Paige hails from the region of coastal Kalos, where she was raised by her mother and older brother. Her father was traveling abroad for most of her childhood, so she doesn’t know him very well. However, her older brother was her number one role model, and she seeks to follow in his footsteps—and maybe surpass him—as a Professor. Due to her being rather young at the time she began her research, her brother believed that her body could not handle the strain of bonding with a Pokemon, so she studied them from afar.

Name: Niku

Species: Solosis

Gender: Male

Ability: Magic Guard

Nature: Impish

Alright here is my character, hopefully I can get a drawing of him up and about later.

Name: Ron Towers
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Trainer Class: Battler
Physical Appearance:
Ever seen a punk? That's Ron. he has a long mohawk that is combed backwards since he is too lazy to fix it up. His hair is dark blue, unknown whether that's natural or not. He has brown eyes, like the color of a dark beer bottle. He always has this mean look on him as if the fact of only existing annoys him. He always has a clean shave and his skin is always clean, despite his punk look. His nails are painted black. He has long slender body, tone muscles but nothing too big, just the results of training to keep up with his future Pokemon. He is 6'2 in height, weights 85 Kilos. He has a slight tan on his skin that is only noticeable when compared to others.
Clothing:
He wears a black muscle shirt with a jean vest over it that has two spikes above each shoulder. The vest has a picture of an Infernape playing the drums on the back. He has a brown wristband on his left hand and two silver rings on both index and thumbs. His ears are decorated with silver piercings. He has black jeans that are torn on his right thigh showing his skin. He wears dark gray military boots that are always a bit dirty.
Personality:
Ron from far away looks mean and the type of person who would bullying people for their lunch money, up close, he also looks like that. However, he is just annoyed by the world, frustrated. The only things he likes are Pokemon, Battles, eating or drinking what he wants and music. He usually has this grumpy and serious aura around him, but once you get to know him he is actually a person who cares for others and sometimes just wants to be left alone, specially when there are too many annoying people around him. He is very patience, probably because he has different ways of dealing with his frustrations.
Backstory:
Ron was born in Goldenrod City, being the first born out of three. He lived there the first few months of his life and then moved to Kalos. There he grew up, being the older brother of two twin sisters. He had a big love for Pokemon battles and always trained himself so he could one day set out on his journey. However he had an argument with his dad, with the result being Ron leaving his house. His attitude was too much for his parents to keep track or try to contain. After a few weeks he went back home where both parents agreed he should start his journey on his own. Ron agreed, thinking this was the best way to keep a healthy relationship with his parents, who he never got along with, specially his dad. He moved to Johto, wanting to start his travels where he was born. He joined a band called the Burning Infernapes, where he plays the drums at a different bar every Friday night. He began drinking soon, making it part of his daily life.
Starter:
Name:
Furia
Species: Cyndaquil
Gender: Female
Ability: Blaze
Nature: Modest
Characteristic: Alert to Sounds
Appearance: She looks like a normal Cyndaquil except she wears a black bandanna around her neck.

Let me know if I need to change or add anything please!

I see Cyndaquil is popular among the Towers' family. Can't blame em.

Name: Ezio Farello
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Trainer Class: Ruin maniac, wants to become one of the best ruin maniacs in the world to hopefully find a way to revert the whole situation or atleast understand it better.
Physical Appearance: Ezio has tanned skin, curly black hair that covers his ears, blue eyes, an aquiline nose and thick eyebrows. He stands at 5'9 feet and weighs 152 lbs.
Clothing: Ezio wears a beige pair of pants, a denim shirt, brown shoes and occasionally a brown fedora to block out the sun. Around his neck, he has a necklace with a piece of snowflake obsidian alongside a bracelet of stainless steel.
Personality: Ezio is, to put it bluntly, a nerd. He can spend hours either reading or explaining seemingly boring things to anyone who wants to listen. As much as he loves history though, the prospect of treasure is just a bit more alluring to him. After all, archeology is just graverobbing with a permit. That being said, he has his limits regarding crime. As long as no one gets hurt or actively suffers from it, he's fine with it. When occupied with something or annoyed, he tends to make sarcastic remarks with no real bite behind them.
Backstory: Being born in Nacrene city to a struggling artist couple, Ezio took it upon himself to ease the burden that his parents bore and make it in the big bad world. The Nacrene city museum had always gotten his attention and he managed to get a position under Lenora as her assistent. It was simple work like returning books, checking gym puzzles, dealing with the occasional fossil revival alongside her, but it was something that he had never experienced before. After reaching sufficient age, Ezio decided to take the leap into the far beyond and finally make a name for himself. Besides, his parents would have an easier time without a third mouth to feed.

Gender: Female

Nature: Impish

Appearance: A regular Silicobra with a pattern on its sand pouch that resembles glasses

I'd like to note that because Nature and Characteristic are optional, I'm not going to strictly tie your stats to your nature. It's more of a personality quirk if you want to work with it.

I plan to use natures to determine what types of food my pokemon likes since different natures prefer different flavors.

I should note that because Pokemon are more aggressive in Poke-Sync, wild Pokemon sustain themselves by laying claim to large territories away from human settlements. So the deeper into the woods you go, the stronger the Pokemon.

In order to stop overconfident kids from running off and promptly being eaten, it may be required that you obtain gym badges, or pass some alternative assessment in order to ensure your pokemon are strong enough to protect you.

Another note:

Current Active Champions

Kanto/Johto: Chase/Lance
Hoenn: Steven/Wallace
Sinnoh: Cynthia
Unova: Iris
Kalos: Diantha
Alola: Kukui
Galar: Leon
