Gryffindork
Dean Hale awoke with a start, his eyes snapping open. He was still in his bedroom, shrouded in darkness. A glance at the clock revealed it was 3 in the morning. From an installed perch by the window, a smallish bird with a hat of feathers crowed softly, inquiringly. The boy shook his head from where he lay on the bed to ease the Pokemon's worry, and in time, drifted off again, ignoring the stray fireworks that had woken him.

Sunrise in Viridian brought the first stirrings of a tradition nearly as old as the city itself. Today, the trainers who had set off from Pallet a day or two prior would arrive, bearing the year's crop of Pokemon from the Professor's Starter Program. Tomorrow, they and the new trainers setting out from Viridian without standard Starters would begin the trek through Viridian Forest.
Because Viridian was central to the Indigo League, Viridian Forest had become something of a traditional first obstacle. After the relatively safe, Ranger patrolled first Routes 1 and 22, the forest became a test of conviction and the bond with their Pokemon for new travellers. In recent years what had been essentially a large block party along the main road leading into the forest had expanded to a citywide event with two new arrivals: a fresh Gym Leader, the ex-Champion Blue, and a stop on the high speed Magnet Train which connected the region to Johto, and allowed more young trainers than ever to start from the fabled forest.
Naturally, the city's businesses had adapted, and now for the week before those two days temporary stands lined the streets, while shops held sales and special events in anticipation of the influx of travellers. Today, Dean planned to attend the formal arrival of the Pallet trainers, where they would be greeted by Professor Oak, who had flown in for the ocassion, and his grandson Blue. Afterward, a day of shopping was in the works, taking advantage of the specials and sales to stock up on last minute supplies before the next day.
