Lexi flopped down onto the bed nearest to the door. "I dunno about you guys, but I'm beat. 'Night," she said, falling asleep almost instantly.
Lexi was a small child again. She looked up at her parents, both of whom had sadness on their faces as plain as the tear tracks. "What's wrong, Mommy and Daddy?" the little girl queried. Her mother took a deep, shaky breath.
"We're going to Japan--" she began, only for Lexi to light up and cut her off.
"Are we visiting Katsuo? I really hope we are, he's my favorite cousin!" Lexi was so oblivious to the situation at the drop of a hat, as most seven-year-olds are found to be. Tears sprang into her mother's eyes, but the blissfully ignorant youth did not notice. Her father cleared his throat.
"Alexis," he said, "You might not be able to play with your cousin. He is very sick and will probably be sleeping for a long time." The phone rang, and Lexi's mother ran to answer it. Her eyes widened and she paled before falling to her knees and sobbing. Lexi ran over, beginning to cry as well. Worry clouded her mind.
"Mommy, what happened?" Her mother embraced Lexi, tears falling down her face and onto Lexi's pajamas.
"He's gone..." she choked out, "Katsuo's...dead..."
All at once, Lexi absolutely broke down. She would never be able to see her favorite cousin ever again...
Lexi sat bolt upright, tear tracks running sideways across her face due to her sleeping on her side. She checked the time. 12:30. Lexi sighed, knowing that she wouldn't be able to get back to sleep, and headed into the closet to change into her armor in case either of her friends woke up. She then quickly wrote a note telling Casys and Jag that she had gone hunting because she couldn't sleep, setting it on her bed before heading out.
