The Mary Sue Test

Not very many Sues in our midst, I see.
I'm thinking of adding on a few things to the test, maybe doing some tweaks. Suggestions are welcome, as always.

Do you guys think the scoring is too lenient?
Yes!

I have to admit that when I saw the numbering going 1, 2, 3, I'd thought that those numbers were the scores attributed to each line. I mean, there is no way that THE CHOSEN ONE is worth just one point!

And also, I think being a relative of any of the anime's main characters has to be worth more than being a relative of a sub character. If you're related to Casey who's obsessed with Electabuzz and baseball, that's nowhere near as bad as being a relative of Ash - let alone if you're the child of Ash and Misty! Who were then both tragically killed in an accident, leaving you an orphan...

From a different world/dimension/time than everyone else in the Pokemon universe.

I totally agree, especially about the chosen one. THAT should also be worth 50 points.

And I think more points should be given the more outlandishly impossible it is for a Pokemon to have a certain move. I.e. the Volt Tackling Fearow or a Flying Onix should get more points than a Discharging Plusle. Or would that be too flawed?

Maybe the move should be worth more if it's a different type than the Pokemon using it. For instance, I gave that Meowth Metronome because it was a Normal attack and I thought it would be reasonable for it to have it. That should be one, maybe two points. If I gave the Meowth Blast Burn, which I assume it can't learn in the game, that should be five points. Draco Meteor might be ten. Also give five or ten points for making up your own techniques.

My character Ehren got a 4, 3 if I use him in an RP where he is part of a canon Region.

(His strikes were having my name, looking like me, and Being a Tycoon/Brain/What the hell ever for being part of a custom Region's Elite Four...Oh, and I used his name/title as my username.)

I think I'm going to embellish him. Give him slightly odd eyes, most like. A blue at the point of being violet, maybe give him some off-green flecks. Does it count if your character isn't on speaking terms with one or two of his family members? My Ehren isn't talking to his older brother or his father, for two different reasons.

I agree that things like "The Chosen One" should be given a higher point grading. Such as, "Instant Mary Sue or Gary Stu." Especially if Ash Ketchum exists, and is alive and well in the RP in question, as he is The Chosen One. Not, "One of a large Group of Chosen who conveniently don't know each other and happen to meet/save the world."

Also, I think that some Pokemon in the games didn't learn moves they really should have. Certain Pokemon couldn't use Cut and Strength, and some Pokemon knew Surf that obviously couldn't carry a person. (I'm using the TM as pure example) I also think that any Psychic-type, maybe the Ghosts too, should have telepathy. As long as they are telepathic, and your character is a Psychic Trainer (Meaning has Telepathic powers, or is based off the Psychic trainer model from the games) you should be able to talk to your Pokemon, if not out loud. I had a character once who was an inventor from the Hoenn region, who finally perfected his father's machine into a portable device. It was called the "PokeEar", and it was a device placed in your ears like a hearing aide to understand the speech of Pokemon. Since there is, I do believe, a man in Devon Corp. who says he's working on such a device, it's not too far a stretch to think his child might finish his work, if they are intelligence inclined.

Well, I made a character just to try and max out my score on this quiz. Let's see how well I did...

My character's name is:
1. The same as mine/a nickname of mine. Changing an e to a y still counts. >>;
Check. 1
2. A noun, verb, or other word that wouldn't normally be used in a name. I'm looking at you, Nightfang and Starlight. Again, spelling variations count. If the word is a color/precious gem or metal, give yourself an extra point. That has no place in a universe where games are named after colors/precious gems and metals.
Check. 2
3. Not even a real name, just letters you mashed together to form something cool-looking.
Umm... Dang.
4. Kind of irrelevant, because he/she just goes by this totally badass title/nickname all the time. Sir Nightblade the Dragon Master is way cooler than Horace Aberforth.
Check. 3
5. Now something I use as my username/online handle.
Umm... I'll get back you.
My character looks:
1. Like me!
2. Like me, only prettier!
Nope.
3. Like I wish I looked. I've always wanted to be Asian. =(
4. Like a celebrity.
Umm... Sure. Check. 5
5. More attractive than any other known life form.

Check. 6
6. So cool, because he/she has a scar obtained in a dangerous situation in their past.
Check. 7
7. Cooler than that, because they have more than one scar.
Check. 8
8. In spite of that, said scars do not detract from their attractiveness; they never receive any awkward stares from NPCs or passersby because their ear was chewed off by a rabid Feebas.
Check. 9
9. Did I mention my character's hair color? Because it's neon green/hot pink/some other color not found in nature, and it's totally not dyed!
Check. 10
10. Also their eyes change color with their mood. Alternatively, they're bright gold/crimson red/hot pink/some other unnatural color, and it's not contacts. (The only exception I'll allow is if your character is an albino, and even then, albino humans tend to have blue eyes. A purplish color is possible, though.)
Check. 11
Check. 12

10. Highly valued by any of the above for their superior skills. The Joys need Sapphire Lightheart to perform a Batista on a Gyarados because they're not as skilled at surgery as her and the Jennies never could have caught that dastardly Pokemon thief if it weren't for the brilliant sleuthing powers of a ten-year-old boy, for example. Five points.

My character has:
1. A dark and terrible past involving the deaths of their family members/friends.
2. A dark and terrible past, which they cannot remember due to amnesia.
3. A dark and terrible past, which they will remember at a convenient time and reveal to their love interest/everyone in a ten-mile radius.

4. A weapon that's extremely out-of-place in the setting/universe they belong to. A modern-day trainer carrying a katana, a crossbow and a battleaxe is going to get some very strange looks.
Knew I forgot something! >_<
5. A pendant or some other trinket that is the only momento of their dead momma/great-grandpappy/goldfish.
6. Also that pendant is magical. THAT'S WHY TOURMALINE KETCHUM TALKS TO POKEMON.

16. Contains a Pokemon that is otherwise stronger/fast/superior to other members of its species because it has a unique coloration/typing/etc.
17. Contains a Pokemon that is a crossbreed of two different species. I don't mean breeding a Gardevoir with a Ditto to get a Ralts, I mean an Arcanine with the tails of a Ninetales and the wings of a Charizard.
18. Contains a Fakemon.
19. Includes a Pokemon that follows them because they nursed it back to health when it was injured/sick.
20. Includes a Pokemon that doesn't even have a pokeball, but it doesn't matter because it's so loyal to them.
21. Is made up of several Pokemon that all have the exact same personality. Or lack thereof.

Heh. Even without inflating the score with the Championings, I totally surpassed this score. In fact, I'm almost certain Chyt "Captain Aluminum" Wyavyr is totally unplayable.

I'm worried about my character of Maiha...

My character looks:
9. Did I mention my character's hair color? Because it's neon green/hot pink/some other color not found in nature, and it's totally not dyed!

Does Maiha's blue hair count? or should I make it black with blue highlights? = 1

5. A pendant or some other trinket that is the only momento of their dead momma/great-grandpappy/goldfish.
If her parents died when she was a baby? Do lockets which hold family portraits count? I'm saying 1 point each to be on the safe side = 4

Ok, she has a shiny Charizard (mainly because I prefer the colour scheme of the black as opposed to the orange) (she did have a shiny Dragonair, but I'm gonna change it)
She has a 'fakemon', the original starter Pokemon i made up for Sennenkan. don't know if it's classed as a fakemon or not...
Her Dragonair she originally got in the 'Safari Zone' of Sennenkan after it had been injured by another trainer and she rushed it to the Pokecentre, but since I'm changing her 'shinyness', I'm gonna say she got it in a cave somewhere after a large and (rather unfortunate for her Espeon) battle. still, one point for now.
Her Espeon has a blue as opposed to red jewel, and her Dragonair has silver 'balls' as opposed to the white (does the last one count? still...
Her Espeon knows Bite. But since an Eevee can learn it, isn't it plausible that after her Eevee learned it and it evolved, she decided to keep the move in her Espeon's moveset? = 11

Scores:

0-11: Congratulations, your character is not a Mary-Sue. Depending on how low your score was, you may be able to pull off embellishing your character a little bit.
Not technically a Mary-Sue, but darn near close. Still, once I change the Dragonair's story and her hair, if needed, it should be better (8-9 as opposed to 11), but I personally like her hair the way it is. Oh, and when her parents died, she was rescued by a passing Suicune (is that another point?)

Ah well, this is not a cannon-based thing, I am making up my own land (it's called Sennenkan), hopefully the 'fakemon' starter won't go against me...

Please help, I don't wanna have a Mary-Sue character!

Yes. I don't care. Yes. Yes. If it isn't in any existing Pokemon game made by Game Freak, yes. Yes, both of them. No, even though a physical move on an Espeon isn't a wise choice. And YES.

HEY YOU GUYS.
I updated the test, adding on some helpful suggestions and making it sterner. The new ones, as always, are bolded for your convenience/eye-aches.

Re-did the test. Kylie STILL has a 4, but now... oh my gosh, Sarah has a 17. She's almost a Mary-Sue...

Maybe she should get rid of Prima's blue and change it back to red... then she'll have a regular Kirlia, and her score would be 7. Wow, Snapdragon, that sure helped quite a bit. But yeah... that is a better test, Snapz. I like it!

Kylie would get a five (or above), though, if you say that getting cursed by Ninetales adds a point or two or whatever. Wait, is that already in the test?

The updates are great! I really like your sense of humour, and I hope that'll help soften the blow for the Mary-Sues out there. "Gary? Who's Gary? Ash has been competing against Kaiyoshimiyuko since they were both orphaned in that tragic Snorlax incident" made me laugh out loud.

Though I think a canon character from another fandom should score at least as highly as being a relative of a major character in this fandom. HEY GUYS NARUTO GOT A PIKACHU AWESOME is really too annoying to read, as well as being cheap because you're starting with someone else's already-written character. And if I ever see a Harry Potter/Pokemon crossover that isn't extremely well-written and obviously a parody, I will kill it with fire.

I'm now curious about the werepachirisu. Have you had particular problems with those? :o

I'm just wondering too. Why wouldn't a Ghost type have telepathy. After all it is a ghost. And I can believe a Gengar would have telepathy much faster than I would believe a Wobbuffet would have it. Or maybe that's just my twisted mind...

I retested my fanfic character Giselle again and she still ended up with a 1 because of the unatural hair color. Carmen, another character of mine, got an 8. One point obviously came from the 'Now something I use as my username/online handle' thing. I won't go into details about the rest of the points because those will be revealed in my fanfic and I don't want to spoil it. ;)

And as far as canon characters go, how bad is it that Professor Oak gave my character her starter? He's not a major character in the story or anything like that. He and the other professors exist in the world of my fanfic but they don't follow the canon of the show. And Ash, Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, etc don't appear.

Receiving your starter from a region's professor is acceptable, because where else are you going to get a Bulbasaur? It's a lot more believable to me than "oh there's a whole bunch running wild near Lilycove, it turns out you just weren't looking hard enough when you played the game."

However, I don't see why ghost = psychic powers. Maybe it's because I don't believe that other Pokemon become ghost Pokemon when they die; how would that explain the baby Duskull you hatched the other day? Is it the ghost of a Buneary egg that somebody accidentally dropped off a cliff? I just think ghost Pokemon are ordinary Pokemon, except they have the ability to go through walls or turn invisible or whatever ghosts do.

I have yet to read anything suggesting "real life" ghosts can read minds and speak telepathically, though apparently they can talk the normal way. Similarly, I can understand your Haunter being able to go "Haunter haunt haunt :V" but not having ESP.

What, exactly, constitutes being "The Chosen One"? One Halloween, I made this character of mine (who is worth 30 points on the test already) have to fight off an extra-dimensional terror that enters the Pokemon world and snatches children in Lavender Town when Daylight Savings Time gives Halloween an extra hour. I think that's about every four years or so. Maybe five. Or three. I forget. Anyway, it's apparently part of a family tradition, but I don't know how far the terror's reach is. All I remember is that the Pokemon Tower gains an extra floor, which is the arena for the epic battle.

That sounds rather "The Chosen One" to me, Gardevoir Master - but there's a difference between being the only person who's able to fight off some specific terror and being the only person who can fight off EVERY SINGLE terror :). The way Ash goes round in the anime implies that he is THE only person who can save the Pokemon world on a regular basis. That combined with the ridiculously large number of legendaries he's met and gym leaders he's defeated makes him ridiculously super-special.

Anyway, if you were writing it as a Halloween horror fic, it's possible that you could make it hammy enough for the normal rules of Mary-Sueism to be suspended. If something's obviously a spoof or parody, you can get away with more.

Not particularly. I think I just used it as an opportunity to teach him Ghost-type techniques (he's the grandson of a Channeler), and I stole the menace from an episode of Disney's Aladdin.

Sean: 2, he looks like me and according to the sci-fi RP I'm currently participating in where everyone has a special power, he's able to control fire.

Sakamoto: 5, he looks like an older version of me with a scar running through his left eye and an eyepatch over it (I was born blind in the left eye, which is why I made him have no left eye), and his family are dead. His name is also one of my online handles..

Hrm, I'm going to test my newest RP Character: Christine.

She looks like me, only prettier. She also has purple highlights, and it's natural. She has telepathic skills. Her Spoink can use Teleport, has a blue pearl, and the pink cheek things are also blue. Reason why? None.

Yeah... My RPing Character scored 3 points. Man, he's lame.
My Fanfic Character though, is a Total Sue. He got 27/8 due to the fact that in the last chapter of the entire story he catches an Articuno...

I belive all my Fanfiction charecters got perfect 0's but of cource in my futar plans they could all get a few marks i mean unless someone spots something out i missed i belive all of them got 0, well one girl is attrative but its okay to have a attrative person, so yea all of them got 0. In my past fan fictions on other sites though i think i got a few 50+ and more 0's.

Does that make my charecters to plain?

Killian = 11 points. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just because Amaya (Riolu or Lucario, depends on RP) has blue eyes it brought her from a one to an eleven! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! T-T So sad...

So, after having noticed this post pretty much by accident, and subsequently taking the test, my dear little abused Kari came out with a whopping 18 points, which puts him in the 'borderline' region of 'normal' and 'maybe a Gary Stu'. Not bad, you might think, he didn't get something like 55 points, but, I have to say that on reflection, some of his history is a bit far-fetched. Admittedly yes, in the Pokemon world, ten-year old children do seem to leave home everyday for a world of fun and adventure and survive pretty much unscathed (with the possible exceptions of running in with the pansy teams that Nintendo likes to invent); my point is, what really is the likelihood of my little street-urchin not being dead? Somewhat unlikely, I think. His career choices are equally improbable, albeit somewhat reasonable given the circumstances (ish).

I do regret the Mary-Suism of my dear little kitty, as I do try to avoid them as much as possible, but I am going to stubborn and say that I wouldn't change him :p

So, how about you? Are any of your current characters Mary-Sue like and how do you feel about it? Let's have a discussion over this idea of 'prefectly annoying' characters.

(If this in the wrong place, feel free to move/merge it.)

My own character (version of myself) got around the same... I'd say the first two sections of the test are fine for a character to be in.

Damn. I seem to be all over the place on this quiz.

The PRP version of Brian scored 14 because of how normal this quiz makes him seem. He is based 90% off of me with the only differences being how I would be in the Pokemon world so such a score is logical.

The RoTN version however, is a 29 because he turns to the darkside and becomes an Akatsuki. To think that those traits would double my score and make Brian a boarderlines Stu. Oh well, as long as no one complains everything will stay as is. 8)

I remember that there was a Mary-Sue test that Snapdragon made a year or two ago for PRP characters; of all my characters that I've ran through the test, I only had one that was on the borderline of "almost mary-sue" and "mary-sue". I haven't used it yet for my three newest characters (you guys know Lyn and possibly Virt, if you've had a "fight" with me in the chat like Kal does sometimes. XD), though, and I'm pretty sure Lyn, what with her messed up past and awesome cryokinesis/hydrokinesis and being based off me and stuffs, is a well-rounded Mary Sue.

Aaaaaannnd just ran Lyn through that Mary Sue test (not Snapdragon's but the other one) and she is definetly a Mary Sue. XD With a whooping 39 points~ though I'm very likely just being unfair to her and saying "yes" to things that hasn't happened yet and stuffs. Though I must say, it is a rather high score...

Yeah, totaly proof that I probably need to work on Lyn before this gets out of hand. XD

If you're using any kind of quiz, you wont get an accurate result. I know that Yoshimitsu is a massive Gary Stu, without use of test, but the tests tell me otherwise.

Mostly I think it's because that test is more based on personality and physcial appearances, rather than super-powers. For the most part, if a character is a Gary or Mary, people will know.

I took the test using Aura, and it said I got 88... I think that's wrong somehow. Sure, she's extremely powerful, but she also has two massive weaknesses where one weak attack from these weaknesses would knock her unconsious, and a strong one would kill her.

And most Mary Sue's get every single guy in the history of the universe wanting her, something that would not happen to Aura. Not much fun dating a riolu hybrid that sometimes loses control and then goes on a murder rampage.

Well, I threw Xyrem through the quiz, and she came out with a 19- although some of the questions are vague-ish, and there are some that overlap in a way such that answering them twice would highly boost the score. It seems that the major percentage of this test was on physical ability, which is one of those things Xyrem does -not- have.

Well, remember it's not just the characters themselves that make a story - it's also what you do with them.
