Itigus looked over to the origin of the voice, only to see that Merlot had followed him. "Interesting choice of makeup..." He shot back, turning his attention to his Pokemon once more. As he had decided before, he was going to simply ignore those who had decided they would continue to gloat, and kick him while he was down. Her entitled attitude certainly rubbed Itigus the wrong way, but he had chosen this spot to train, and would not be moving from it due to a minor annoyance.
"Alright, to start things off, Sicarius, we're going to need to go over the basics of everything, so you'll spar with Ajax for a bit to get some safe battle experience." At the moment there didn't seem to be any wild Pokemon around. However, it was common knowledge that one did not need wild Pokemon to train Pokemon. If anything, going around beating, and fainting random Pokemon who did not attack you was rather mean spirited. Pokemon were capable of gaining experience through sparring, and practice as well as real battles just like humans were. Though, Pokemon did learn much more when they were able to fight against one that was much stronger than them. It was only natural that fighting with someone better than you would make you see what you needed to improve.
For Itigus as a trainer, losing to Mero had given him important experience. He knew now to trust his instincts more than he had. If he had the feeling someone was wearing a mask, he would need to treat the situation more cautiously. He realized that another one of his shortcomings as a trainer was that he resorted to the most predictable move first. The Rockruff had, no doubt, seen an Iron Tail telegraphed from a mile away, and had properly dodged the inaccurate move.
Itigus had only trained Ajax to use the moves. He hadn't taught Ajax how to hit the moves. This was not some simple game with guaranteed accuracy, or mathematical equations that would lead to an outcome that was able to be calculated before hand. The games he'd seen that mimicked Pokemon battles had rightfully left out a lot of other variables to a Pokemon battle. Dodging, environment, feints, multiple attacks at once, and many other parts of a Pokemon battle were left out to make the game fun, and simple for everyone.
Pokemon were able to avoid Earthquake by hiding in trees, or jumping high into the air. Battles were not turn based, and Pokemon could bind certain parts of their opponents bodies to stop a move. A real world Pokemon battle was much more complex than that of a game, but it was also a lot more free.
Itigus needed to learn that straightforward, predictable fighting, was not going to help him in any capacity. He needed his Pokemon to memorize techniques for avoiding, reversing, and countering attacks without using an attack themselves. Itigus needed to be able to form a strategy in a matter of milliseconds, and his Pokemon needed to be able to react without him having to command it. As a trainer, he was there to offer his perspective as an outside viewer. Itigus needed able to communicate with his Pokemon while also being able to make sure that his opponents didn't figure out his plan until it was too late.
Itigus simply watched his two Pokemon fight without his intervention, looking for weaknesses in their technique. It was quite obvious that Ajax was a much more capable, and experienced fighter. Sicarius, however, tended to run, and dodge in a lot of their confrontations. It was in the Gastly's nature to be anti-confrontational. Sicarius could not take very many hits, and therefore it needed to avoid many of the Poochyena's attacks.
Itigus's red eyes darted from side to side as he closely analyzed them, narrowing his focus onto their battle, and their battle only. At the moment, it was clear that Sicarius lacked battle experience. It had not managed to return an attack, and simply kept dodging to a mixed success. Before long Ajax wore the Gastly down, and landed a decisive blow.
Their sparring hadn't harmed them for long, but it had given both of them exercise, and it had given Sicarius some experience. When a Pokemon was able to more effectively bring out more power behind their attacks, or move faster, or take attacks easier that was due to experience. They had the muscle memory within them to hit the right areas, and deal the most damage. To lessen the damage of blows by protecting critical areas from being hit. They learned better ways of moving about at quicker paces, and bringing out their innate energy to use in the most efficient way possible. For most Pokemon, their body would want to adapt to this new found power. When certain Pokemon gained enough battle experience, their bodies experienced evolution, so that they could survive easier. To a Pokemon's body, it was led to believe that the Pokemon was constantly fighting, and therefore needed to adapt suddenly, and quickly in order to survive.
At least, this is what Itigus theorized from his own observations. Pokemon could resist evolution, and tell their bodies not to adapt, but at the same time, they tended to want that extra boost in power. Evolutionary stones simply awoke this sense, this need, for a Pokemon to evolve into a newer, stronger, form. The same was true with many other methods of evolution.
It had not been observed that any Pokemon that evolved through trade had been naturally found in the wild. Golem, Machamp, Trevenant, Magmorter, and others had only been observed in history after the invention, and trading of Pokeballs. There was something about the relationship between humans and Pokemon that caused Pokemon to adopt stronger forms. The most recent development had been Mega evolution in this case. While temporary, Pokemon would be able to break past their limits, and achieve a new form through the resonance of it, and its trainer's feelings.
Itigus had wished that there had been more books on Pokemon in the public libraries at Dolus. Perhaps he would have been a better trainer if he had managed to get his hands on the latest research. All Itigus could do, however, is simply use his own mind to make educated guesses to fill the missing gaps.
He told Sicarius what he had observed about its fighting style. "While you're very fast, you're using too much of that energy to run away. You're too cautious, and that's why Ajax is able to keep you from attacking. If you use your speed to your advantage more, and dodge towards an attack, rather than away from it, you'll be close enough to return a hit." The Gastly nodded, floating back up into the air.
Itigus walked over to Ajax, "Most of your attacks aren't hitting Sicarius. I can see a lot of wasted energy from that. Try to predict where Sicarius is going to be before you attack, and make the adjustments. Remember, everything falls into a pattern, so if you can get that rhythm you'll be able to predict where he's going to be." Ajax nodded, barking, and taking a fighting stance.
With this, the two started up again. Itigus simply watched in silence, and continued to analyze what they needed to improve.
