Who would be interested in learning how I make signatures?

Subject says it all really... but first I'd like to clear up some forum related issues for this topic. I didn't have a clue where to put it, so I asked Katie :p

If the reason you wanted to ask the first topic was simply to save yourself some work, though, feel free to post that on the Artworks forum, too, since that's the audience you'll be targeting anyways. You can say I told you to post it there if anyone asks :p

Moving on...

I'll go through from installation of GIMP, right the way through to the end. Starting off with downloading and installing GIMP, and setting up some add-ons and plugins that are helpful. Also fixing up the beginning interface to include all the sections you'll need. I'll then move into the actual signature making, with the basics, using brushes to make backgrounds for you and explaining how to make a basic border and text, to make something along the lines of this:

I'd then cover using more items of GIMP, and some from elsewhere called "C4Ds". I'll also teach you what a stock is, and how to use and distort that to replace the brushes used previously, to come up with an outcome similar to this:

I'll then steadily move us into the more advanced items, using effects like Gradient Mapping and Smudging, and the fantastic Displace tool that I use for practically every signature I make without fail. I'll also cover how we can make the image have flow, and make it appear more as one image instead of one slapped on another and how to make the text fit into the image as well, to end up with something like this:

I was thinking about how I'd run this too, if people are interested.

I was either thinking of just posting up some basic tutorials and just letting people do whatever, or (this one I prefer), picking out several forumers who are interested and working through it with them and moving at the same pace. I'd call it more of a school than a tutorial thread. And making it quite clear that my help will be directed at those forumers only, so we don't have everyone piling in. :p

Thoughts or interested in it? :)

I would suggest making a video like Jappio did in his thread, hearing it makes it alot easier on starters then reading it. If you dont have the time/resources simple image tutorials can work as well.

Nice idea ^_^ guess your tired of being the only signature maker for requests?

I know that, but the thing I -can't- do to save my life is speak just like that. I can't do stand up speaking presentations, and I can't do it practically too because my computer room is a public room, so to speak, so I'd get bothered and other ideas too.

I wanted to do some of these before, commentated videos, but I just never managed it :( Hence this idea :p

[/quote]Well, not really, but I wanted to do something similar yet different, if you get what I mean. Jappio's video made it click yesterday. :)

I want to learn!

I think that it would be very interesting if you were to teach some more interested people how to make sigs. That, and I hate having to go to sig shops and request things when I feel as though I could make my own. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I might do a conjoined one for photoshop users since that is what I use and I know a fair few people here have some sort of Photoshop program they use. Hope you dont mind, ill probably post it in your topic since its essencialy the same thing.

I don't mind, but I'd rather keep them separate to keep the minions less confused :p And also its keeping our eggs in one basket.... I think that's the right phrase to use.

I guess signatures and avatars aren't hugely different, eh? (It's mostly just the size differences that separate the two) Because the thing I've been wondering about lately is how to make a decent-looking avatar that isn't just a cropped image :p

If a tutorial like this could help with that, I'd definitely be interested. I mostly use Photoshop/Paint at the moment, but I could easily redownload GIMP if need be.

Meh, I'd like to see how to do this... I think it'd be nice to know how to do this, so I can make something on the computer that isn't just pixel related. Hmm... I hope this'll be easily mousable...

I admit, I always wanted to know how you made these awesome signatures, LoN. It would be interesting to know how you did it, even if I don't actually make a signature.

But then again, I might.

LoN did say he'd tell you how to download and install it, Aura ^^

Great idea LoN, and a popular one! It's nice that you want to pass on the skills of making your wonderful sigs. I'll keep my eye on this thread, although I won't be working alongside with everyone. I have that much drawing/creative software on my comp that GIMP might send it over the edge XD
Plus I'm on a Mac and usually key commands/visuals etc tend to be different to PC and it would just get annoying.

And I know what you mean with making the videos. I'm ok at public speaking now(I have to do presentations at work all the time), but I used to barely get the words out when I was at school/College. I have stupidly fair skin as well, so my face would be as red as a tomato XD

Hmm....

Kalseng, Katie, Rayn, Shiny, Aura so far. Nice. Once we get one or two more, or maybe even none, I'll lock this and move on to the main.... thingy :D

Ummmmm is it ok if I can join too? I always wanted to learn, and I had always admired your work. I want to do something worthwhile for a change. If its ok with you.......please and thank you.

Okey, lets see then.

Kalseng, Katie, Rayn, Shiny, Aura, PR06 on the list.

I'll start work on the starting post, and I'll lock this thread for now. If anyone else has a desperate urge to join too, they know how to contact me :)
