I like the idea of the case just suddenly springing to life and acting as a mentor.

Maybe it grows legs...
or a mr meeseeks pops out.

I like to imagine the tm machines or whatever the heck you wanna call it has like some kinda earphones or earpod pros or something you can put in your pokémon's ears and the machine gives off some sort of soundwave at some freaky frequency or subliminal messages kinda stuff thus giving them the mental idea of how to perform the TM. Something like that I guess...

Realise this has been inactive for a bit. I’ll try spark conversation (keyword:”try”.)

I think basing a Pokemon’s worth and value on its competitive viability isn’t a great reasoning for considering it your favourite. I know it’s everyone’s choice on how they decide their favourites, but to me when someone says they made a Pokemon is their favourite because “it’s good in battle” it kinda comes of as “shallow” to me I guess. Obviously I’m not counting if your favourite Pokemon just happens to be good in competitive, that’s different. But it just doesn’t feel very genuine when someone bases their pick on the pokemon’s competitive use. If I did that Sceptile sure as hell would not be my favourite Pokemon. Bare in mind this is just my stupid opinion, feel free to combat it.

I never have and probably never will try competitive. I enjoy spectating and listening in to how deep the games' mechanics can go, but it's not for me.

I agree that people's opinions on a Pokemon should probably go a bit deeper than stats, but I could understand how a competitive player would form connections with some of the high tier competitive Pokemon.

I've used Pokemon in playthroughs that I probably would never have cared for based off their designs alone. One time I had a Raticate in a nuzlocke and now Raticate is a personal favorite. I'd imagine this happens with players and the competitive teams that they've had. A Pokemon that they never paid a second thought to, became their favorites after they used it to sweep.

People can do whatever they want. If people wanna run around in their underwear and scream "I wanna be the very best like no one ever was!", go for it. If people wanna tape their phone to the ceiling fan to make it seem like they are walking long distances in pokémon go, I mean... go for it I guess... if people wanna choose viable pokémon ugh... go for it?

My opinion on the subject is pretty similar to the ones mentioned above. The pokémon I like have cool designs, lore, interesting personalities ,or a combination of the above. Now I'm not saying competitive players don't like the pokémon they use cause... maybe they do. If you ask one... obviously they will just respond with yes or duh. So I usually don't talk about this.

This last part will likely piss off competitive gamers.

Personally I have no interest in competitive pokémon. The only thing winning a pokémon match whether PvE or PvP does is give self gratification. Congratulations. You can strategize. If I'm that much interested in coming up with strategies I'll play chess. Pokémon strategies aren't complicated. They can be interesting or even well thought out ,but still aren't complicated. Sorry if I pissed you off!

I play Showdown, but usually I just do joke strategies (like 6 Voltorbs with only Explosion, or recreations of teams from the main series games).
Playing to win is just boring because often it's like 2 strategies that are really stale to me.

One is the stupid Smeargle/Eevoboost set up, Baton Pass into Drifblim for Minimize spam, Baton Pass into a Power Trip Krookodile where you not only probably have a substitute, but also one-shot literally everything that isn't immune to Dark.

Two is just having Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre and Mega Rayquaza along with some other really dumb legendaries or maybe even an additional Gigantamax Urshifu or something.
Why on earth are you allowed to have both Primals, a Mega and a Gigantamax in the first place?

I much rather prefer going with what I want to do, and enjoying doing that. I don't care if a Pokemon's strong, if it's ugly as hell, I ain't using it.

Kanto should have wide open farmland fields. Kanto in future regions has been called the boonies. A rural region. you could bring up Saffron City ,but Saffron city is just one part of Kanto. Places you might find farmland out in Kanto could be anywhere between Pallet Town ,and Pewter City. Cerulean City ,and Vermilion City could have farmland in their surrounding area.

I’d love to see Gamefreak update Kanto someday. They’ve kind of done it before in the HgSs games, updating the look of the towns and routes, Making everything look nicer. There were so many great touches like a train station to johto that I wish they had in Let’s Go. Even if you wouldn’t be able to use the station it just adds a fantastic touch, reminding us that Kanto is bordering Johto. I get that GF is a big fan of nostalgia baiting, but it can become a problem when they refuse to update a region and make it look fresh.

I definitely agree that stuff like farmlands would be an awesome edition to some of the older towns to add some culture. That was probably some of my favorite visuals that Sw/Sh had to offer within their small towns.

Any of you guys got a favourite music track from the games? Cause I think all of the games have really good soundtracks and I don’t really hear the music being discussed.

As for town/route (or other areas) themes, I really like: Littleroot town’s theme, Slateport cities theme (specifically the oras version) and the village bridge theme from black and white. In terms of battle themes I think the platinum battle frontier theme might be my favourite, closely followed by Silver’s battle theme and Hugh’s battle theme.

A lot of people don’t really care for the music, but I personally really like the music in the games so I thought I’d bring it up.

Those tracks are both cool.

I still remember going into slateport city for the first time... all my pokemon were low health. Caaasuuse... I battled everyone on the beach and inside that lemonade shop. I was hoping I'd stumble across a town soon ,and low and behold... slateport music starts playing and I eventually see the pokécenter...

Guzma's theme is forever my favorite. If I had a poison type specialist he'd be a rapper that paints cool graffiti tags and stuff... and has Guzma's theme or something very similar...

Ruby Sapphire and Emerald have my favorite soundtrack. I actually went into that in a music in Pokemon thread I started a few months back. I just think the music represents Hoenn and all of it's different environments well, while sounding very coherent.

Other than that, Gen 5 has the best bops. Enough said.

I would LOVE to see a pokémon Coliseum remake, but I don't think anyone else does since everyone loves talking about gen 4 remake and let's go gen 2.

Pokémon Coliseum was dope. Wes was this guy with a espeon and umbreon. He was also friends with a girl named Rui.

Rui was special cause she could sense this black aura around certain pokémon.

You know what else is cool about Wes? Wes rode this awesome motorcycle... Most protagonist ride bicycles. That's cute! Wes has a motorcycle.Take that Red...

Also pokémon Coliseum came after gen 3 and before gen 4 so this woooould be a great time for a Coliseum remake. Though even with this fact I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority... by far...

Lately we have been seeing a return from some of the fan favorite Pokémon spinoff games such as the Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX remake and the new Pokémon Snap game coming. I never played Colosseum but I'd be down to see more spin off games come back. It's always neat to see what kind of fun and unique games are created with the Pokemon world outside of the main series formula. I also would love to see the Pokemon Ranger games make a return.

I really would like to see more of a focus on side-games. Not just remakes, but also a few new introductions and sequels. As has been said, Colosseum, Gale Of Darkness (which is kind of a sequel to Colosseum, I think, I know they share some mechanics, but do they follow a consistent story?) and Rangers.

In terms of new series' or standalone side games, I'd love to see a whole story based off of the Pokéstar Studios thing from Black 2 and White 2. Giving it more depth than just choosing moves and lines. Perhaps you can write your own scripts and combine different genres and tones together.

Maybe we could get a way to reference the Pokémon universe's past, which could add references to Kalos' past, perhaps some of the other side games (Rangers is one that comes to mind right away) and even some new past about Unova.

And, this is super strange, but I'd like to see it return to the Gen 5 Pixel Art Style. I just really want to see all those awesome costumed versions of the MC in the retro look, fitting in with the old ones, and the new ones.

One of the things I liked about sprites over 3d models was the fact that you were the same height as adults. When my gen 6 character walks up to 80% of the npcs in game he looks upward cause pretty much everyone is either taller than you or eye level. Theres a couple kids that you get to look down at ,but i liked being the same height as the adults...

In regards to Pokemon, I definitely prefer the 2d sprites to the 3d models. The sprites had personality and looked full of life (in gen 5 especially). Whereas with a few exceptions, the 3d models look dead and lifeless. I mean look at Typhlosion for example, they made an awesome pokemon look kinda boring and lifeless, doesnt even have its flame lit half the time.

Despite my complaints i must admit theyre starting to improve on the models, as alot of the gen 8 Pokemon have great 3d models that dont look boring.

The 2d sprites did have a lot more personality but I wouldn't say the problem comes from switching to 3d models in general. The problem is that Gamefreak has put in very little effort to give personality to those 3d models. And I totally agree with Jay that a lot of the new gen 8 Pokémon are a lot more expressive than the Pokémon models prior to Sword/Shield . I would love to see Gamefreak go back and reanimate the older Pokémon because most of them are pretty lifeless. Unfortunately I don't see that happening any time soon.

I would agree of @Ridleymon

I believe that Sword and Shield took enormous in-roads in terms of bringing Pokemon Franchise Games into a more relevant 3D model such as other "Big Hit" franchises such as more or less every other role-playing game on the market. I do feel that there could have been more of range in emotions and to not have the Pokemon (and characters) feel so one-dimensional and this would not have even required all of that much additional programming space to detract from the main experience. For example there was minimal "Player Agency" in the Games. It forced you down a single path, and even the "choices" you were offered were forced into the path the developed wanted you to go and so were less meaningful in the way that these same choices would have say been in Hoenn when you had to say decide teams based on HMs.

I would also love to see more of the older Pokemon animated in 3D full emotional sprites, but I feel this may come with the DLC later on... I also would have loved more side content such as the use of Pokemon Contests and more "elaborate" customization as really there are limited options especially for female trainers other than color selection. There is limited dresses for example, and also the accessories and other things are limited compared to what was in Gen 6 and the world itself even has a "Fashion" feel to it similar to the Unova Region.

You know, I have recently noticed that some of Sword/Shield's best animations are all of the the unique trainer animations that the characters have at the beginning of battles. They're all super cool looking and serve the characters' personalities very well.

I don't really remember if this counts as a spoiler for Isle of Armor but better safe than sorry.
Mustard's animation when he begins a battle? It's the best Pokémon animation I've ever seen except its not even a Pokémon. It's a senile old man!

I'm a little indifferent to the isle of armor... ancient chinese monastery in the UK?

This is cool I guess... but would look better in a region surrounding china. The place chinese monasteries actually exist.

Fun fact! Kubfu is obviously a reference to kung fu which is Chinese martial arts and urshifu is a reference to shifu which is basically... someone who teaches chinese martial arts.

Here’s a juicy take that I’m gonna throw out here. I would like to see HMs make a return.

Okay, not really. HMs were very VERY flawed in how they were implemented. It is certifiably lame that in order to progress in the game, you were forced to have your pokemon take up ¼ of it’s move pool with an attack that probably wasn’t even good. Of course you can catch Pokemon for the sole purpose of teaching them HMs so you don’t have to waste move slots on your main team, but it becomes quite tedious to have to switch up your party just to explore a certain cave or mountain. That being said, I believe HMs brought to the table some very overlooked aspects to the games that Sword/Shield were lacking.

What seemed to be the main ambition of HMs was to implement your team of Pokemon into the rest of your journey. You are playing as a worthless little weakling kid heading through dangerous wilderness and challenging terrain. It doesn’t make much sense that a kid is doing this all on their own, thus they have their big strong pokemon move boulders and smash rocks for them. They fly around the region on their oversized birds and take to the seas on their blue water creatures.”Blue water creatures.” There is probably a smarter phrasing out there but I digress.

Older games were never quite able to convey this due to graphical limitations but it was always a neat idea that my Pokemon were helping me travel the region. You know what game did thrive in this department? Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee. I can’t say I loved these games but easily my favorite part of that game was Pokemon in the overworld, most especially the rideable Pokemon. The single greatest moment of that game was when I found out that you could ride on a Lapras in the water. Of course that is just one example of many. You can ride on your Persians, your Charizards, your Arcanines. You can ride on a Snorlax’s goddamn stomach in that game, so it deeply pained me when I found out that we’re back to riding bicycles in Sword/Shield, but not only are we riding bicycles, we are riding them on bodies of water now too I guess. I’m not suggesting that gamefreak go out and make every potential Pokemon rideable but it would be cool if we got a handful of rideable Pokemon for a game.

The next thing that HMs brought to the older games were dungeon-like puzzles that allowed for some more diverse game play outside of trainer battles and whatnot. All of the routes in Sword/Shield are relatively empty outside of trainer battles.I’d also like to mention that these puzzles often provided some sort of reward if it wasn’t progression. You might get an evolution stone, a rare candy, or maybe a useful TM. A big thing that I’ve noticed about Sword/Shield is that most items are handed out to you with no sense of challenge. I remember in older titles how cool it was to come across a rare candy. They have “rare” in the name so how is it that in the gen 8 titles I’ve got warehouses full of ‘em?!

The last topic on the HM agenda that I would like to cover is linearity in the Pokemon titles. I know a lot of people have been wanting to see the games give you more freedom with how you explore a region and I would love to see that too. The way I see it, the games have had relatively linear paths since the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games. Where the exploration really shines is in the routes. I know most people look at Gen 5 as when the games got super linear, but even Gen 5 had a lot of great areas to explore like the big desert between Castelia City and Nimbasa City. The biggest factor that encouraged you to come back and continue to explore an area were HMs. Maybe you saw a mysterious forest or cave but you weren’t able to see it because there was a rock in the way. I felt that the games were always great at encouraging exploration, much like something you’d see in a metroidvania, and they accomplished this through good old HMs. Whenever I boot up Sword/Shield I am never compelled to go back to any of the routes because there is nothing left that they have to offer.

Those are a few reasons why I’d like to see HMs make a return, just reimagined because like I said they were very poorly designed. I know that in the newer games they have replaced HMs with an axe to cut down trees or some sort of random pokemon that you rent, but that ruins the whole immersion that your team of Pokemon are on this journey with you. Alright, that ended up being much longer than I anticipated, but I’m interested to hear what other people’s thoughts are on the topic.

They could bring back HMs. However, I don't want HMs to be mandatory to adventure. If they are, well... They could always have HMs be a passive ability. Upon beating 'X' gym leader, pokémon with 'X' Passive ability can go past 'X' obstacle.

An example of what this would look like...You beat Roxanne in Hoenn, and now you can cut trees down. Yeah! Cut trees down. Not helping the envirement, but you can now access new areas. Later on you beat Norman. Now you can surf! Cause you just ate, and it hasn't been thirty minutes yet, so I wouldn't wanna go swimming just yet. Just use surf bro.

Some pokmon will have multiple passive abilities... swampert can surf, waterfall, whirlpool, and dive. So it would have all four of those passive abilities. You don't have to teach your swampert all those stupid moves you'll never use. Surf was actually a really useful move... but there are plenty of normal/physical type moves I'd rather use than cut. Quick attack or double edge(if i'm using aggron) come to mind.

-alternatives-

Flash? I'd love to see that replaced with a lantern or some fancy night vision goggles or something. The lantern would be a heck ton easier to get than night vision goggles so lets go with lantern instead. Much cheaper too. All caves should really be dark. Why is it that I can see plain as day in one cave, but not the other? Where THE HELL is the logic there game freak? sorry for my language...

swim? swimming lessons. swimming trunks. Those little flipper shoes divers wear? Maybe... I like the idea that the player can swim... you know... like EVERYONE ELSE. Your the only trainer in existence that needs your pokémon to take you places cause your weak pathetic muscles are unable to help you swim. You can ride a bicycle and run literal miles without need of rest. I know this is purely game mechanics. The game wants you to utilize your pokémon to the fullest. I completely understand this. I still think its stupid.

I always imagine my character has a godly irrational fear of swimming. He can barely stand even being near it. It takes immense willpower for him to even sit atop his pokémon as it does all the work of taking his dumb a** where he needs to go. Doesn't even thank his pokémon either. When he gets to land, just puts it back in its pokéball. Super ungrateful btw. That's enough ranting though...

waterfall? Yeah... There is no way your worthless aquaphobia having a** protagonist is gonna get his lazy butt up a waterfall. Just go around the waterfall. Or fly over the stupid thing. stupid. You can use your pokémon to fly from city to city, but you can't use it to fly over obstacles. Actually. Just get rid of every HM and keep fly. Fly is the only HM you will ever need. Tree in your way? fly over it. rock in your way? fly over it. waterfall in your way? fly over it. those stupid obstacles that require an acro/mach bike? God I hate those so much... Use fly dangit! Literally every HM can be replaced with fly. The entire game would be so much shorter if you could just fly. Maxie is atop the volcano doing stupid shhh? Just fly atop the volcano, and push him in. Archie in some island secret base doing more stupid stuff? Just fly in there, and push him in the water. There are probably sharpedo in that water...

I wanna end those post on a less dark note. I can't really think of anything for rock smash or strength, or defog.

Rock climbing is a thing people can do... I doubt the protagonist will ever rock climb though. pokémon protagonsits are pretty contempt with letting their pokémon do everything for them. I wouldn't be surprised if Red had his charizard chew his food for him, or his lapras shoot water into his mouth so he doesn't have to pour himself a glass of water. razzle frazzle *walks out of room ,and slams door*

I wanna take the oppertunity to say, I love surfing in alola. It's really creative. Technically, your still riding atop a pokémon. Not an actual surf board, thus bringing me back to my previously mentioned point of the player being over reliant on his pokémon. However I wrote too much on that subject already, so im going to stop poking the dead horse, and just stop this post right here, before I continue ranting again.

See for an HM like flash, wouldn't it make sense to replace that with a fire Pokémon lighting up a dark areas? To me that's just a lot more interesting and imaginative than bringing a flashlight or night vision goggles.

Oh man, I would love to see diving return in a new Pokemon game some day, whether you're using a Pokemon to swim or not. Could you imagine the potential there? I love seeing fan art of underwater pokemon ecosystems and it would be so cool to see something like that executed in the main games considering Pokemon now roam in the overworld. Unfortunately I don't know if Gamefreak would execute it to the scope I'm imagining, but I can dream dammit.

that would be cool too. I also like the idea of an electric pokémon giving a nice little flash. Fair enough there.

The only place I'm gonna see that stuff is in a written work. Maybe an RP. Though it would be neat if game freak had more underwater areas. Maybe have a few areas that are not filled with water, but simply submerged. Like an underwater cavern. Alola could have been this. Alola could have had several sunken ships, maybe a few caverns. With the nintendo switch, pokémon could make this happen. They probably won't but they could...
