Ask to Join Pokémon Academy

Seeing Shiori approach, Hanako smiled at the presence of a familiar face. Another student began to talk to Shiori, so Hanako turned her attention to Shiori's Houndour and Tyrunt. Still holding her Omanyte in her arms, she crouched down to the level of the two Pokemon.
"Hello." Hanako said to the Houndour and Tyrunt. "Are you friendly?"

Back in the battle room, Dean was ready to coach anyone who needed help. And maybe Yusuke. "All right," he said loudly, "In this world, there are several ways people and Pokémon can be recognized together, battling being one of the most popular." Yusuke raised an eyebrow in surprise. Dean sighed, waiting for himself to remember what he would say. "Any questions?" he said, "By the way, anyone can become a legend, even if they're, like, ten years old." Yusuke had already heard enough. He knew more about battling than what it seemed.

Hanako giggled as Shiori's Pokemon began to cuddle up with her. The Houndour felt pleasantly warm, but the Tyrunt's lick was tough and wet. With a smile, the girl wiped away the dinosaur drool off her cheek. In her arms, Omi chirped a happy hello to Shiori's Pokemon. Hanako took this opprotunity to give Shiori's Tyrunt a closer look, carefully inspecting the dinosaur Pokemon from top to bottom.
"Shiori, is it okay if I pet your Pokemon?" Hanako asked.

But before she had the chance, the man from before spoke up. Dean Chadburn, the one that everyone was so excited about and who had given the presentation just minutes before. Was the class about to start? Hanako listened to his speech. Anyone could become a legend, even if they were 10 years old? That sounded awfully specific. But was it really true?

Justin noticed the look of annoyance Maribelle gave him but brushed it aside as he went to the Photographer's Room.

By the time he arrived, almost all of the students were already present, and it looked things were just about to begin. The room was the spitting image of a photo studio rather than a classroom. It had everything a photographer would need from green screens to film for non-digital cameras. Justin was impressed by everything.

The young photographer then turned over to the instructor, who was a former employee of a big time magazine. "Hello, everyone!" He said, "Welcome to the Academy's Photography Class! Now, I'm sure many of you are just starting your careers as Pokémon Photographers or already have some experience in the field and are looking to perfect your craft. Well, this class will help fulfill all that you need while also, teach you about the passion and heart that goes into it. As a Pokémon Photographer, you're not just taking a picture of the Pokémon. You're also capturing the scene of the moment. The detail and atmosphere that will make people who see be in awe and feel like they're actually experiencing it in person."

Justin listened to the instructor, which made him more excited about the class. "Now, since today's the first day, how about we have this be a free day? Take the time to explore around the academy and take shots of whatever calls to you. And also, take the time to get to know your classmates. You could learn a lot from one another."

"Okay!" Hanako said. She put down her Omanyte and began to pet the Tyrunt. It's skin was rough and rocky, as to be expected. From what she had read, she could recall that Tyrunts were Rock and Dragon type. The rock typing made it much easier to fossilize, and Hanako couldn't help but to wonder about what other ancient Pokemon there were that simply weren't fossilized. Hanako could see the fossil Pokemon's sharper teeth.
"What is your Tyrunt's diet like? What do they eat?" Hanako asked Shiori.

"So... no questions?" Dean asked. Yusuke sighed. Dean waited a few seconds. "All right," he finally said, "Does anybody want to demonstrate exactly how to battle?" Yusuke put his hand up straight away. Dean smiled. "Psychic-type trainer," he said, "You're up." Yusuke walked to one side of the room. "Anyone else?" Dean asked.

Hanako looked around the battle room. The trainer that volunteered was a younger teen, one that Dean called out as a psychic type trainer. No one else volunteered, and an awkward silence fell across the room. Hanako paused her petting of the Tyrunt. Should she volunteer? No one else was appearing to. After another moment of silence, Hanako tentatively raised her hand.
"Um... I could?" Hanako asked.

Dean smiled as Hanako raised her hand. "All right," he said, "You and the psychic-type trainer stand at opposite ends of the room." Yusuke smirked. 'She should be a grass-type trainer,' he thought, 'Alakazam knows Torment, a dark-type move; Raven knows Sucker Punch, another dark-type move; this is my lucky day.'

The girl slowly made her way to the battle arena, realizing that all eyes in the room were now on her. She held Kabo's Pokeball tight to her chest, glancing around nervously. She couldn't be focused on the crowd. It was like Brock had told her, keep herself focused on the battle at hand. Hanako faced Yusuke, giving him an apprehensive smile.
"H-hello. I'm H-Hanako, what's your name?" Hanako asked Yusuke.

After the instructor announced that today would be a free day, all of the students soon exited the Photography Room, including Justin.

Everyone went to different parts of the campus. Some stayed on their own, and others decided to interact with each other. Justin wandered on his own around the academy, camera in his hands and wondering what kind of pictures he should take first.

Soon, the photographer would pass by the Battle Room and stop to look at it's direction. He noticed a battle was about to commence, and that raised his curiosity more. Justin would then approach the Battle Room and take a peek at the battle inside, seeing that the two trainers were a boy and a girl.

Hanako frowned. He certainly didn't seem excited for the battle. Or nervous. In fact, it looked like he was, well, uninterested.
"Right." Hanako said. She'd just have to make him interested in the battle! Hanako straightened up. She just had to remember what she learned from battling Brock. Confidence! Determination! Keeping a rock solid spirit!
"Okay, let's do this! Go, Kabo!" Hanako exclaimed. The girl threw a Pokeball into the arena, which burst open to reveal a Kabuto. The fossil Pokemon screeched, clicking its talons as it readied itself for the coming battle. Hanako waited to see what Pokemon her opponent would send out.

Yusuke raised an eyebrow. He sure didn't expect Hanako to have a water-type, or be a water-type trainer at all. Then he smiled. "All right," he said, starting to smile, "Let's go." He remembered that Kabuto was a water/rock-type, so Hyper Beam would be ineffective. "Raven!' he shouted as he released a Xatu from a Poké Ball. Dean started to stare at Yusuke. "Someone knows their type matchups," he said. Yusuke smirked. "Oh, it's only getting started," he said, "So when do we demonstrate?" Dean sighed, looking at his watch. "Should start in a minute," he said. Yusuke and Raven stared in shock. A minute? At least both were patient.

Justin's eyes widened a bit at the sight of the Pokémon sent out by the girl trainer named Hanako. "Woah! A Kabuto!?" He exclaimed to himself before pulling out his Kalos Pokédex.

"Kabuto, the shellfish Pokémon," the Pokédex began to say in a female voice, "It is thought to have inhabited beaches 300 million years ago. It is protected by a stiff shell."

"Wow! Don't see one of those everyday," Justin said to himself as this was the first time he had ever seen a Kabuto. He then saw the other trainer, Yusuke, send out a Xatu and decided to check its Dex entry as well.

"Xatu, the mystic Pokémon. And the evolved form of Natu. They say that it stays still and quiet because it is seeing both the past and future at the same time."

After hearing both of their Pokédex entries, the photographer put the device away and began to take pictures of the two trainers and their Pokémon from a distance. Although, he took more pictures of Hanako and her Kabuto seeing as a fossil Pokémon is a rare sight.

Hanako watched as Yusuke sent out his Pokemon. A Xatu! She recognized the psychic type bird Pokemon from when she visited the Johto region with her brother. A wise Pokemon that could see the future. Even with Kabo's rock typing, this would be a difficult battle. But to Hanako's confusion, the coach told them to... wait? Hanako stood awkwardly, waiting. After a few moments, she looked over to Dean.
"Um... Sir, I'm ready to battle. Is this battle going to be just these Pokemon, or do you want us to use our whole teams?" Hanako asked Dean.

Yusuke suddenly remembered something. "Dang it," he said quietly, "I have a slight disadvantage." Dean sighed. "Just these Pokémon," he said, "And even if you're at a slight disadvantage, you'll still be somewhat even." Then Dean checked his watch. "Bell rings in 30 seconds," he said, "That's when the battle starts." Yusuke sighed. "At least we'll have an audio cue," he said with a smirk.

Hanako flinched at the sudden sounds of encouragement from the crowd, looking back towards Shiori. Inspired by the girl, other students began to cheer for Yusuke and Hanakp. Hanako smiled at Shiori before turning her attention back to Yusuke and his Xatu. Her stance slowly shifted, becoming more defensive and battle ready as if to mimic her own Kabuto.

Xatu. A psychic/flying type. She had never battled one before, so she wasn't sure what to expect. Which would be faster? Kabo, or the Xatu? If Kabo was faster...

"What's this?" Hanako looked down at the disk presented to her cautiously.
"It's a Technical Machine, or TM. A TM contains a technique for a Pokemon. These ones are only good for one use, but there are some newer ones that are good for multiple uses. This is TM39, containing Rock Tomb. It hurls boulders at the foe and lowers it's speed." Brock explained.
"The move your Onix was using!" Hanako exclaimed.
"Yeah! Consider it another reward for your win, it's something I like to give out to all the trainers who beat me. I'm sure your Omanyte or Kabuto could benefit from learning a move like this." Brock said. Hanako nodded, accepting the disk.

TM39... Hanako had taught it to Kabo, and it had been a reliable move against flying types. Even if Kabo couldn't outspeed Xatu right off the bat, a hit or two from Rock Tomb would slow it right down if the attacks weren't enough to K.O. it.
"Ready yourself!" Hanako called out to Yusuke. "I'll show you how trainers from Kanto battle!"

Yusuke ignored the sounds from the crowd. Then Hanako called out to him. Yusuke smirked. "Kanto, huh?" he said, "I heard that trainers from Kanto are usually the slightly more offensive kind of Trainer, but us Johto trainers, on the other hand, are quite strategic in our battles, so I'd recommend you try and adapt."

"Don't get cocky," Dean shouted, "That's something I learned just by watching people battle." Dean then looked at his watch. "Battle starting in 3..." he said, "2... 1."

The Battle Bell rang.

"Quick!" Yusuke shouted, "Use Thunder Wave!" Dean looked right at Yusuke. So he used TMs as well? Raven followed through with the command and aimed the wave at Kabo. Yusuke smirked. "It'll take a while to outspeed Raven now!" he shouted, "I taught him Thunder Wave with a TM!"

"Rock Tomb, Kabo!" Hanako commanded. But unfortunately for her and her Kabuto, Yusuke's Xatu was faster. The girl flinched as the psychic bird Pokemon blasted Kabo with a strange electric blast. Kabo shrieked angrily, and a spark shot off from the water Pokemon and shocked Hanako.
"Ouch!" Hanako exclaimed, taking another step back. But despite the static shock, she was more concerned about what Yusuke had said. It was almost as if he knew she was thinking about Rock Tomb! Dean had called Yusuke a psychic type trainer. Hanako had heard stories of some trainers that used psychic Pokemon having psychic abilities themselves. Was Yusuke one of them? She couldn't afford to think about that now.

"Kabo, Rock Tomb!" Hanako commanded. The Kabuto screeched, but to Hanako's horror she watched another bout of electricity course through the fossil Pokemon. He was paralyzed, unable to move! Hanako stepped forward, worry clear on her face.
"K-Kabo! Move, hurry!" Hanako called out.

I am DEAD. I am so, so dead.
Miko had gotten lost... again! In the midst of the gathering in the hallway, Skiploom had floated off. Miko ran through halls and doors, and by the time he found Skiploom and returned back where he started, everyone was gone. However, a flash of light caught the corner of his eye, and cheering echoed through the halls. Following the noises, Miko found his way to some sort of battling room. He panted and stood back against a wall, where he saw a crowd surrounding a few trainers from earlier battling each other. It seemed like the paralyzed Kabuto was having a hard time, and he took a mental note to look into status conditions.

Previously The failure
While other students were going through their business with some kind of battle, a newcomer from Unova ended up making his way into the halls. His hair was a mess and he seemed somewhat disheveled, as if he was caught in a whirlwind attack. His Sylveon by his side, the smart dressed trainer made his way into where he sensed activity was centred around. Idly tapping around on the holographic screen in front of him. He also entered a battling room and his eyes were immediately glued to the fight. Opening his Pokedex app, he began talking quietly to himself and analyzing the situation. "Ahh, this is interesting... Kabuto isn't something you see every day, being a fossil pokemon... Rock water type, it seems to already be in a bad situation given that Xatu could outspeed it, despite having a type weakness to rock... Judging by how it seems to be reacting, paralysis has hit it hard, interesting to see how it deals with this situation..." His Sylveon seemed to be less bothered about the fight and merely took to nuzzling her trainer who gently pat her on the head. "Now now Mistress, there will be time for affection later."

Donovan was completely exhausted. He was sitting at his desk in his office, his entire body seemingly glued to this computer. A lot of menial work needed completion today thanks to the start of the new school year. "100,073 students..." he mumbled. A colleague approached him and offered to do the work for him, but he declined. "No, no, I'm fine. Besides, we need more teachers to help with the sheer amount of students in the halls anyways..." His Falinks were helping around the office, shredding paper, stamping, stapling, and the like. Quite impressive for Pokemon that lacked arms. The colleague gave one last look at Donovan's rather busy office before heading down. Donovan sighed, rubbing his eyes. He looked around at the pictures that adorned his desk. His trip to Sinnoh felt the most memorable. All the sights he saw, how happy he looked... where did he go wrong? Donovan just sat there for a moment. A Falinks nudged him. It was the leader of the group, and it seemed particularly concerned over how somber he looked. "Oh, it's fine, don't worry!" he put a smile back on and continued his mind-numbing work.

Yusuke decided to continue the fight. "Let's go!" he called, "Hyper Beam!" Dean glared at Yusuke in shock. "What?" he said quietly. Raven used Hyper Beam and gave the Kabuto a bit of a beatdown. Yusuke smirked. Dean cringed. "That's gotta hurt..." he said, feeling a little sorry for Kabo. Yusuke's smirked didn't stay there for long. "Anyway, we've seen 2 TM moves and heard about one," Dean said. Yusuke sighed. "And it looks like this battle will be over quick," he said, smirking again. Dean glared at Yusuke, this time like a death stare. "I sort of figured that, Psychic-type trainer," Dean said. Yusuke started to sweat. 'Please be over soon,' he said in his head repeatedly.

Hyper Beam?! Hanako stared at Yusuke in shock when he called out that move. That was a move she had only seen the likes of Lance and other high level trainers use! Xatu could learn a move like that?
"K-Kabo, look out!" Hanako said. The Fossil Pokemon shook for a moment, fighting through the paralysis. There was a sudden movement, and Kabuto seemed to disappear into the bright light of the Hyper Beam attack. Hanako shielded her eyes from the powerful attack, but when she looked back to the arena... Kabo had vanished! Hanako looked around the arena in panic.

"Kabo?! Kabo!!!" Hanako called out, frantically searching. Had her Pokemon been totally annihilated by the powerful normal-type move?! With a loud screech, Kabo emerged from a pile of nearby rubble. It looked hurt, but not as bad as it could have been. Right before the attack hit, Kabo had managed to move so some of the energy of the attack was deflected off it's hard outer shell. Hanako sighed in relief. That's right, normal type moves weren't as effective against Rock-Type Pokemon. With new confidence, Hanako gestured to Xatu.

"Kabo, Rock Tomb!" Hanako commanded. Screeching angrily, Kabo used a strange energy to pull chunks of rocks from the arena floor. The large rocks were flung down at the Xatu from above, attempting to bury the flying-type under them.

Raven, being the Xatu it was, stared in horror as the Kabuto threw a large array of rocks at it. It was almost buried by the attack, but when the assault finally ended it, Raven was furious. Yusuke smirked. "You've made him mad now," he told Hanako. Raven started using Hyper Beam over and over and over again whilst moving to different spots at an extremely high speed. Though in a rage, Raven had good accuracy for a couple of Hyper Beams. Then it stopped. Too much dust. Dean shuddered. "Jeez," he said "I'm not looking at Xatu the same way again."

Previously The failure
Of course, Lewis simply watched the fight intently. The Xatu using hyperbeam was a surprise, but he'd formerly seen stranger things so it wasn't as shocking to him as it would have been for those involved in the fight. With the rising dust cloud, his Sylveon decided to nuzzle up close to him, using his jacket as a way to shield herself from the dust and potential flying rock shards. Her trainer decided to get his own protection, a mask meant for both facial protection and to avoid him from breathing in dust and a hardened visor meant for construction and engineering jobs. It was at least good protection from such intense battles. He looked towards his Sylveon and gave her a gesture, his voice having a slight robotic tone as his facemask seemed to have an internal microphone to allow him to speak better. "Mistress, get ready to provide medical attention. Based on my analysis, this should be over soon, and we have to stand by to heal anyone needing it." He finished, checking his bag to keep stock of what supplies he had. The Sylveon gave a cry of affirmation and continued to attempt to hide her front half in his coat while making sure she could still see.

For a moment, Hanako hoped Kabo's Rock Tomb would be enough to end the battle. But to her disappointment, she watched as the bird Pokemon burst from the rubble. Surely it would switch to a different move, like a psychic or flying attack. But unprompted by its trainer, the Xatu continued to attack with Hyper Beams! Kabo, still paralyzed, didn't have the agility to evade. The first Hyper Beam struck the rock-type head on, and Hanako could tell that her Pokemon was knocked out. But the Xatu continued it's rampage! Hanako recalled Kabo back to his Pokeball before he could be hurt more and dove to the ground, curling up in a ball in fear as Hyper Beam attacks flew around.

I'm going to die! Hanako thought. She stayed curled up on the ground, her eyes closed tightly even after the Xatu's rampage stopped. She was shaking in fear.

Dean stood, surprised. Raven's rampage ended abruptly, and Hanako was curled up into a ball, shaking. Raven fell to the floor, exhausted. Yusuke called Raven back into its Poké Ball. "Seems like a draw," Yusuke remarked, "Sorry I didn't warn you about Raven's anger issues." Dean nodded. "It's a draw," he announced. People in the crowd talked amongst themselves. That battle didn't even last a minute.

Seeing the results of the battle, Shiori quickly ran over to Hanako with Alice and Duke. Kneeling next to her, Shiori gently placed a mechanical hand on her shoulder in an attempt to calm the girl. "You alright Hanako?"
Alice and Duke on the other hand glared at Yusuke and showed their teeth. Shortly after, the duo joined their trainer in trying to calm down Hanako.

Justin watched the battle ensue, taking pictures of it as well from time to time. He was quite impressed at how both Pokémon were performing at the beginning. However, his enjoyment on watching the battle later turned into shock and a bit of horror. What had started as an even back and forth between the Xatu and Kabuto, shifted into a borderline slaughter fest. Luckily the Kabuto was recalled by it's trainer before it could get seriously hurt, but even then, the Xatu continued going berserk for a little longer before fainting.

After all had passed, and a draw was declared, Justin was a bit dumbfounded by what had just happened. The first battle he's seen in the academy, and it badly went South. The photographer looked at the over at the trainers. First at the boy, named Yusuke, and then, at Hanako, who was being consoled by another individual.

The Heart of Frostfire.

Previously The failure
As the battle was over, Lewis quickly took off his mask but left his visor on, putting the bulky mask back in his bag. Both the bag and Sylveon followed him as he carefully pulled out a kit full of medical supplies, worry practically emanating from him. "That was... Rather intense for the first battle I've witnessed here. Is everyone okay? Does anyone need medical attention? I'm sure your pokemon could at least use some first aid!" He spoke, his worried tone offset by the kindness in his voice. As if to show his eyes, his visor became more transluscent. Still having a green tint, his uniquely coloured eyes were now visible. He smiled, his Sylveon deciding to use her ribbons to ride her trainer, her head popping up next to his as if he were some bizarre Zweilious.

Eventually, the Sylveon became bored and noticed the rather terrified looking trainer. With a simple gesture towards Lewis, she quickly made it to Hanako, using her ribbons to try and calm down the trainer. If anything, Sylveon were very good at spreading positive vibes, and Mistress was no exception, trying to do what her kind did best.

Hanako flinched at the touch of Shiori, but was quick to calm when she saw it was just Shiori. Realizing that the battle was over and the Xatu was returned to it's Pokeball, Hanako slowly got back to her feet. She realized she was still on stage, in front of the entire class. Turning a little red with embarrassment, Hanako began to look herself over.
"U-um... I guess..." Hanako said. "I... I haven't been in a battle where a Pokemon went crazy like that before."

As she spoke, a realization hit her. That Pokemon had gone crazy, was her opponent okay?! Hanako quickly looked over to Yusuke, and to her relief found that the other boy was okay and unharmed. But her relief quickly turned back to apprehension. His Pokemon had gone on a rampage, had he wanted his Pokemon to do that? Hanako felt something wrap around her leg, and looked down to find a pink Pokemon wrapping some sort of ribbons around her. It was an Eeveelution, one Hanako recognized as Sylveon. She had never seen one this close before, and the feeling of the ribbons felt... nice. She could feel her stress start to melt away.

"Tie? Yeah, right!" A voice rang out from the crowd of students. A few got quiet a looked back to the origin of the voice. It was another student, one with red hair that swept over half of his face. He was wearing sport sunglasses and a black leather jacket, and a sports hat with a flame patch on the front of it. He gestured to the battle arena, looking to Dean.
"The Kabuto went down way before the Xatu." The teen said, crossing his arms.

"Hey! Are you ok?" Miko viewed the intense battle in awe and a sort of enthused terror, as amazed at the Kabuto for taking those attacks as the Xatu for dishing them out. He coughed and ran over to the Kabuto's owner, who seemed pretty shaken up by the volley of attacks. Her and her Kabuto had taken a lot of blows, and Miko wanted to make sure the two were okay. It seemed as though someone's Sylveon had the same thought as he did, but Miko still wanted to help. "Did any of the debris hit you? I don't have any human medicine, but I have a few Potions." However, Miko's head shot towards another student, dressed in leather with red hair and a red hat, voice ringing out across the battle room.
