Finally, a direct attack. Furia took advantage of the situation. Her fire ignited again into a bright blue as she looked up at the incoming opponent. She took in a deep breath and release another overwhelming Flamethrower. If Aero was going to hit her, he would need to get through her flames!

"Keep at it Furia!" Ron called eager to see the outcome of the fight.

Nice! A direct hit from dragon breath would do wonders to level the playing field. It was a shame their opponent wasn’t paralyzed, but otherwise, things were good. Their fore was waiting for an opportunity, that was good, she had stopped their assault, that’s what she’d wanted. But what next? Esther moistened her lips, and her eyes scoured the battlefield of billowing dust and now ghastly doubles of their opponent. Her mind worked furiously.

Their opponent was fast, and they’d be on the back foot if they allowed them to make full advantage of their speed. However, the smoke screen had managed to give them pause. Esther wasn’t sure how long that would last, but she planned to make the most use of the reprieve. She had woven together the beginnings of a plan.

“Alright Pyrrha, let’s sweep up the battlefield back-to-back 『Dragon Tail』!”

From within the smoke, the Jangmo-o went to town on the battlefield, quick strikes of dragon tail throw up more dust and threw rocks, and debris and launching them at the double teams in the confusing melee.

Interactions: Gwen Tucker (IDKWhatUserNameToDo)

Naka noticed something. Because Hanu was busy using tactics, she didn't get an accurate read as to how strong Furia was. When she watched the Flamethrower make contact with Aero, his skin was turning red.

Her eyes widened.

How strong was Ron's Pokemon?

Aero screeched loudly from the pain. He realized too late how strong she really was, and realized all of Hanu's damage he accrued happened to be from glancing blows or from an unfinished attack, barely from direct hits. No wonder why he was trying his best to use tactics!

Aero got close, but switched his Wing Attack for something a bit more potent. His entire body shone a deep brown, the flames now bouncing off as his body became cloaked in a rocky sheen and then a physical embodiment of stone layered over him. Of course, the blue flames were melting him, but his attack still hung true.

Stone Edge - a variation of sorts.

He was going to hit her with all his might this time, no holding back.

Ron smiled, "Great battle Naka!" He called out.

Furia knew she was on her last moments, but she wasn't going down so easily. With her right hand she charged up a Shadow Ball, stopping her Flamethrower. She felt as time slowed down, would her attack be ready in time? As Aero got closer, Furia swung the right side of her body back and then lashed forward, looking to smash the Shadow Ball directly into her opponent. The ghost move made contact with the Stone Edge and Furia's vision went black.

Ron saw as the impact of both moves exploded, sending Furia flying back and crashing into the ground. She laid there belly up, heavily breathing with her eyes closed.

"We're done!" Ron called out, knowing his partner couldn't take anymore. He walked over, avoiding getting close to the burning ground around Furia and called out her. "Take a break, let me know when you're ready to return."

So the girl picked up on Oracle's fear of getting dirty, eh? Shit. For all the good that ego of her's did, it sure had a habit of getting in the way.

The dust cloud wasn't an impregnable defense, though. The lizard's tail glowed bright blue with every smash of the cobblestones, and the light pierced through the cloud each time. Each mirror-Absol's gaze snapped to the draconic arcs, and Monty called out, "Close in! Night Slash!"

Some of the Double-Team-clones shimmered as flying debris passed through them, but each of the half-dozen Oracles on the field charged toward the rampaging lizard at full speed. Two of the copies were dispersed by the bigger chunks of flying debris, POOFing into the ether, but the four remaining Oracles quickly surrounded their opponent on all sides.

Each Absol glared daggers into the gray and gold lizard, and the real one relished the opportunity to repay it for the earlier Dragon Breath.

"That dust works both ways, you know!" Monty called out to the girl, who he could barely see himself through the cloud. "Which one's the real one?"

Since he was done with food for now, and he couldn't just do this the whole time he's in Kalos, maybe he should check out the battle that was going on nearby. They said it was between two really strong trainers, or well it's what he'd overheard from some people around the streets of the city. It would be interesting and maybe it could give him a change of pace instead of just going to Battle Cafés like the one previously and get beat down. He ran through the street, but kinda tripped. Whoops.

He picked himself up as he scratched the back of his neck, pretty embarrrassed from that fall. A few people stared, but then turned away as he stood. He ran towards the area he knew where the battle was in, and came to saw tons of people, with two people fighting it out with eachotherz One with an Absol, and another with a Pokémon local to Aola, a Jangmo-o.

Naka was absolutely beaming.

Aero saw the wind up for the Shadow Ball, and took it head on. The explosion knocked him back and into the air. Quickly, Naka returned him, making sure his body didn't land on the hot ground. She was chuckling, looking back at Gwen to make sure she was okay before running over to Ron, making sure she didn't touch the fiery ground. In fact, she sent out Froslass, who immediately glowered at the ground.

"If you'd be so kind." Naka suggested, the Froslass rolling her eyes and setting about with an Icy Wind to cover the ground, her hands outstretched as she pointed it to cool the ground so a fire didn't start because Naka was being irresponsible.

Turning to Ron, she had such a huge smile on her face. "I'm so glad I got to fight such a rare Pokemon! Thank you." As per Sinnoh culture, she bowed deeply before straightening once again. "I also wasn't expecting your Pokemon to be so strong. I assumed your Typhlosion had evolved recently, but I didn't think she had already passed her time to evolve until now. I'm surprised Hanu survived for as long as he did. Aero's the strongest Pokemon on my team for right now, besides my Zweilous." She then calmed down, taking a deep breath. "Well, hopefully Furia can rest easy now all that energy is out of her system."

Esther barely suppressed a grin. Her opponent was closing in with a powerful move and he was right, between the dust and the doppelgangers she had no clue where the real threat was coming from. Fortunately, she didn’t much care. She followed up quickly with the next step of her plan.

“You should’ve used that speed of yours!” Without the lightning-quick motions of quick attack or sucker punch, Pyrrha had far more room to escape, something Esther decidedly pointed out to her opponent.

“Pyrrha,『Dragon Breath』 straight down!”

A powerful burst of dragon fire pushed Pyrrha straight up and out of the clutches of the encircling Absol—even out of the cloud of dust itself. And now that all their opponent’s doppels had neatly gathered—“Pepper them, 『Scale Shot』!”

Pyrrha flicked and flashed, then a rain of sharpened scales showered the battlefield below.

Furia groaned as the Icy Wind covered her up, but her overheating body melted it away quickly, she just remained flat on her back. She opened one eye at the mention of another strong Pokemon, but then changed her mind and attempted to take a nap.

"Yeah it was a really good battle. I think Furia burned out. Told ya she wasn't untrained, just frustrated. I think she still is, but this was a good distraction." Ron looked at his Typhlosion and shrugged, "She needs a nap and fresh air. I'll stay here if you two are going to the Pokemon Center."

Luz meanwhile meowed loudly and brushed her body against Gwen's leg, before leading her over to Naka and Ron, walking with her head up proudly. She kept going until she was next to Ron and took a sit, cleaning herself from all the dirt that got on her fur from the fight.

Shit, this was getting interesting. The criminal tracked the lizard-pokémon's take off, his mind racing with possibilities of how to capitalize on the situation.

Sucker Punch? It would be basically undodgeable, unless the drake used that Dragon Breath move to change its momentum. If the blue blast had enough force behind it to send it that high, it could definitely push it out of the way mid-air. The girl's words gave him pause, too; should've used that speed of yours. Yeah, he probably should have, but now?

No, there were too many variables. After hearing the girl's call for Scale Shot, Monty called a pre-emptive, "Detect!" Wait...that was it!

Oracle growled as her Night Slash slashed straight through one of her own doubles, and her gaze snapped up to follow her opponent's trajectory. The Dragon Breath had dispersed a good deal of the dust around her, giving her a clear view, but that also meant the lizard had a clear view of her.

The Absol's eyes lit up blue in time with her trainer's call for << Detect >>, and Oracle gracefully weaved between the raining scales. She maneuvered her way back into the cover of the dust, extremely irritated that this foul peon was forcing her to get herself dirty, and her ears perked up as her trainer called for another move.

"Flash Step into Play Rough!"

So useless Monty finally wanted to use that? It took him long enough! She'd been honing the technique for the last week, occupying herself with perfecting it while Monty worked on getting their teammates into gym battle shape. Her vexing little opponent wouldn't know what hit her.

As the onslaught of scales finished raining down and the raucous rattling stopped, Oracle closed her eyes. She felt outward with her horn, sensing for the minute changes in air pressure and wind direction around her airborne opponent...there she was!

The Absol's feet crackled with the black sparks of Sucker Punch, but her horn remained as it was; unlit. The sparks flying off her feet would be hard to spot through the thick dust, but Oracle held at least one advantage over her opponent. She didn't need to see.

Oracle felt for her opponent's descent, anticipating the moment she'd enter the dust cloud. As soon as she did, she'd have her right where she wanted her.

Flash Step? Esther didn’t know what that was, but it sounded fast, sounded like exactly what she wanted. The Oblivian naturally hadn’t reminded Monty of his speed out of the goodness of her own heart; nay, she was baiting him. She wanted him to call for speed because she wanted to use it against him.

If Monty could see through the dust or if Oracle had kept her eyes opened then perhaps one of them would have noticed the current state of the battlefield—gouged and battered by repeated dragon tails and now littered with a layer of razor-sharp scales, it was perilous terrain, to say the least, and terrain he had just ordered his pokémon to rush right through! All the grace in the world wouldn’t prevent their opponent from stumbling over any of the small ditches or stepping on any of the scattered scales, and at their speed, a tumble would prove disastrous!

Esther was pretty confident in her subtle trap and a wild grin split her lips, it seemed like Monty had fallen for it hook, line and sinker; and to top it all off—“Dive Pyrrha, 『Protect』into 『Dragon Tail』!”—Taunt had just worn off.

Pyrrha dived with every intention of meeting Oracle head-on; and though Esther couldn’t see through the smoke, she could envision the ideal situation. Once their opponent had stumbled over the hazards on the battlefield, Pyrrha would slam into them, using Protect as a blunt weapon and stunning them long enough for her to finish things with a follow-up Dragon Tail. It would be swift, it would be ruthless, an impactful one-two—but would it work?

Now! Oracle SHOT! forward in a flash of black light, bounding across the scale-ridden battlefield in a single leap as she honed in on the spot her opponent would fall to. The calculation was perfect, and the Absol was on course for a direct collision; a direct collision into Pyrrha's Protect.

Oracle SLAMMED! into Pyrrha's spherical cocoon, bouncing off with a loud THUMP! and falling backwards right onto the sharp, scale ridden battlefield. The Absol hissed in pain as the scales dug into her back, but her opponent wasn't done with her yet. The Dragon Tail THWACKED! into Oracle's exposed belly, knocking the wind out of her as the scales dug even farther into her back.

Who...exactly...did this pokémon think she was?! Oracle hadn't met an opponent as contemptuous as this drake since her battle with the Houndoom. She'd had to rely on Monty to bail her out of that battle, but she wasn't down for the count this time.

She bounced off the ground from the force of the Dragon Tail's impact, but it was just the distance she needed. Oracle's horn glowed black with Night Slash, and she wrenched her neck to the side to slam the scythe into the ground. The power of the move flipped Oracle over, and with her feet back underneath her they began emitting black sparks yet again.

The Absol's horn glowed black, too, and her venomous glare connected with her opponent's eyes. Forget the Flash Step into Play Rough; this punishing Sucker Punch would come from point blank range!

Esther couldn’t see how the battle was progressing inside the cloud of dust, but the flash of dragon tail let her know her plan had succeeded; unfortunately, even with the success of her maneuvers, things end pretty conclusively when Pyrrha was thrown flying from the cloud, thoroughly unconscious. The Oblivian’s face fell and then settled into a pout.

She sighed and returned Pyrrha to her pokéball, then with reluctant steps she plodded onto the battlefield to show her sportsmanship.

“That was a good battle, don’t think I’ve seen any pokémon take hits from Pyrrha like that.” Certainly, none of their prior opponents could’ve withstood blows like that. Esther eyed Oracle with a measure of wonder before her gaze settled on Monty. “I’m Esther, and you?”

He really saw that battle unfold, and it was awesome! He was so starstruck on both teams, even though one of them lost. It was the coolest thing he'd ever seen, and maybe that one guy in the suit could teach him how to get better at battling!

He thought, "I mean, he's super strong! Maybe it could really help me out."

He wasn't all much into the Pokémon battling scheme, but maybe this could be his chance! Plus, he'd be exploring Kalos anyway, and maybe these guys were too! No point in not asking. He walked over, getting ready to ask them.

"Hi! Um, do you mind if both of you could train me? I haven't really been in the Pokémon battling scene, but I could help! And plus, I could cook, so we don't have to go and spend Pokédollars!" He said to the both of them, hoping that they'd agree.

Gwen Tucker - 16th of June - Battle field behind the Pokecenter, Eterna City, Sinnoh
Gwen could only gawk at the tremendous display of strength from both Naka and Ron. The situation had quickly developed into a spectacular fight. Using the battlefield to their advantage, morphing and changing it to their advantage. Trying to hinder the other opponent, using one's moves against them.. It was like she was watching one of the broadcasted battle tournaments from the tv, but she was there! ...Probably a bit too close to all of the fire.

While she still found Furia intimidating she felt determined and almost inspired. Determined to one day be a worthy opponent for Naka and Ron to hopefully have some kind of fight like they did. Neither of them even had to call out commands each time. It was clear that both of them had an unspoken understanding and trust with their pokemon.

Gwen couldn't help but put her hand on Cobalts pokeball.. Maybe one day they could also have something like that? She had to train a lot if she really wanted it. She did one firm nod to herself, as if she steeled her resolve, but right now both Cobalt and Ozzy needed some rest at the pokecenter. Or more so the Piplup, but some rest wouldn't hurt for the baby Deino either.

The light blue haired girl felt Luz brush against her leg and the young trainer smiled at the Psychic type, "Thanks Luz," she said before looking up at Naka and Ron, looking like she wanted to say something but looked down, "I know Cobalt needs to be healed at least,"

Prior to diving, Desmond listened to Aldon as he seemed to ramble on about what happened if one got eaten by a Sharpedo, specifically some philosophical question on what was to become of the guilty Pokemon even perhaps musing a contest over it as Desmond blinked a bit. Not helped that he seemed to hear Esther request to ride another trainer's Sharpedo which only caused his face to pale a bit.

"L-let's just hope it is kept as a theoretical...." Desmond said back to Aldon.

Once he had taken the dive, he hung by Reina...though not too close given the Swampert she was on had left him sheepish but thankfully this dive gear had worked well to mask that. Politoed seemed to happily swim around, moving quickly in the water as it kept close to Desmond while it admired the view. Speaking of, they seemed to swim by a sunken ship which Desmond had to admit was quite the good find this early on, and when Reina requested a photo it had been an easy shot to take.

"Alright Politoed you can go with them in frame..." Desmond said as Politoed happily swamp over by Reina and Swampert, and seemed to rest on the latter's head as Desmond seemed to twitch internally...hopefully it was cool with that. Either way he raised his hand and gave a 3...2...1!

Snap!

July 19, Tuesday - Yellow Rock Isle, Johto. Reina, current rank, 34,107

"Hi Politoad!" Reina posed next to the green frog while her Swapmert had his usual expressionless face on. "Thanks Desmond! I'll send it to my mama later." She swam over to the photographers side, looking around to make sure Gene was okay before looking back at the ship. "Do you want to go in? We can watch your back while you get some good shots."

"Hey Esther!" Reina called out, waving to her future wife, "Can you help me scout the ship? We want to go inside." Without waiting for an answer, she and her Swampert began swimming towards the abandoned boat.

Peque let out a small roar, like if testing if any Pokemon were inside and if they were invading any territory. The Swampert stopped outside one of the windows of the vessel, peeking inside, but not seeing anything. Reina waved at the others to follow, up to that point, they were safe.

Monty grinned as the dust settled and revealed Oracle as the victor in the flashy finish. The Absol stood tall over her fallen opponent, her head held high and a satisfied expression plastered across her face, and Monty crossed the hole-and-scale-ridden battlefield to meet his partner and the girl in the middle.

The criminal smiled gratefully as the fiery-haired girl complimented Oracle's prowess, while her kind words and wondrous gaze fanned the flames of the Absol's ego. "Enchanté, Esther," he returned the introduction in silky-smooth Kalosian, "I'm Montagne, but my friends call my Monty. And this here-" He gestured to his gleaming partner. "-is Oracle."

The criminal had no interest in playing king of the hill now that they'd defeated Esther, but his interest in the girl was piqued with those finishing moves. Her and her partner were the trickiest battlers that he and Oracle had run into yet, already leagues above the other Old Guard members in terms of battlefield creativity, and Monty had the feeling she'd make the perfect partner for the Shabboneau Exhibition.

Before he had the chance to ask her, though, another new face ran up to them from the crowd. What, did someone already want a battle? No, the kid asked an entirely different question. Monty listened skeptically to the kid's request, sizing him up at a glance. He didn't look all that tough, but looks were decieving with trainers. Free food sounded like a win-win, too.

"We're not exactly a team yet," Monty told the newcomer before turning to Esther, "But if you want to take this show on the road I'm sure Oracle wouldn't mind having some new training partners."

Uh, what? Oracle most certiainly would mind having that contemptuous gray-lizard around! She glared at her trainer, but didn't bother flaring her Pressure in her battered state.

With not even a half-dozen weeks of experience to her name Esther didn’t think she was in much of a position to train anyone else, but as far as exchanging tips and tricks went? Yea, she could do that. Monty, as he introduced himself, made it clear he didn’t mind the additional company and frankly, Esther didn’t either. Honestly, she was already tight on cash as it were, so a chance to save cash was very welcome.

“eh, I’m sure we could work something out, care to introduce yourself, mysterious cooking stranger?”

”I’m Nico! Nico Zacharias Flynn. I just flew in from Alola, and i’m a chef! And these are my Pokémon, Pepper the Scovillain, and Berry the Cherubi. We aren’t good at battling much, since we‘re mostly in the kitchen a lot of the time.” He said.

Nico was really bad at Pokémon battling, nor has he ever tried fighting with his Pokémon since he didn’t really need to. He knows that they know some moves, but it’s not too much of a big deal. Pepper looked at the two trainers with interest, and they didn't seem like bad people. If Nico was to go with them, it could be something so cool to check out the entirety of the Kalos region with a group of people. He knew it was a win-win situation because they could get free food, while he gets to explore Kalos, get better at battling, and learn about new dishes!

"So, what are your guys' names?" He asked. They haven't introduced themselves so, it was their turn.

So they were both foreigners, eh? That was good for he and Oracle; less of a chance of either one recognizing them.

Monty wasn't so sure about Nico, given teaching wasn't exactly his forté so much as teaching lessons, but there was merit to traveling in a bigger group. Neither trainer seemed much younger than him, at least not enough to draw attention, and while having just the girl at his side would be an asset having them both would make for pretty decent Interpol-camoflauge.

"Enchanté, Nico," Monty gave a smile and stuck his hand out for a shake. "Like I was telling Esther here-" the criminal gestured to the fiery-haired girl, "-my name's Monty. And this is Oracle."

Monty looked to his partner as he introduced her, meeting a venomous glare as she stared up at him. It was bad enough that useless Monty was trying to recruit the girl and her insolent partner, but now they were considering adding another member to the party?! What was next, taking in every stray pokémon they came across?!

The Absol sat down and turned her nose up at all three trainers, stubbornly rejected the idea of teaming up. What for?! They wouldn't help her prove her strength at the gym! And they certainly wouldn't help her get cleaned up after catching so much dirt in that battle! Her poor coat...Oracle shot a glare at Esther as she lamented what was in all reality an inconsequential amount of grime.

"Look's like she's getting antsy," Monty commented. The Lumiose-native looked farther up the street, and spotted the corner of the North Boulevard's Pokémon Center gleaming in the morning sun. "How about we three get a little better acquainted on the way to the Center? Pyrrha, that was her name, right? Her and Oracle are both gonna need the visit, anyway."

Countess Azumi Towers, Lumiose City, Kalos. July 1st.

"That was a nice battle, huh Nana?"

The blonde academy student patted the Gardevoir softly on the head while the Pokemon reacted by hanging on to her trainer's hand, not wanting the patting to stop. Azumi kept the pats going as her Rotom Phone emerged from her pocket and hovered over the psychic fairy.

"Bzzzt- Ring Ring -Bzzzt"

Azumi lifted one eyebrow at the phone and laughed, "What are you waiting for, answer the call!"

The light blue phone buzzed once more as the video call began. On the screen there was a face identical to Azumi's but with a mischievous smile. It was her twin sister and like always, she was probably calling to report on her latest achievements or gossip.

"Hey Ma-" Azumi began, but was quickly interrupt by her sisters loud voice.

"Guess what?! I met this guy yesterday. Challenged me to a battle, but Charo De-Stroyed him. He never stood a chance, I mean he used a bug Pokemon? Against a fire master. Can you believe that? Anyways I thought he was cute and he kept stealing glances at him while we battled and you know I look really good when battling. So, I don't blame him. After beating him, he asked for my number and I was like 'wtf this guy' but I gave it to him and he just called to ask me out! But, idk, should I go out with someone weaker than me?"

Azumi pressed her lips together while her sister kept on talking, as soon as she opened her mouth to reply, Maker was on a rant again.

"Hey by the way, did you hear? You probably did, but still. Ron was arrested. I didn't believe it at first but I recognize that silly mug anywhere. Dad called right away but it seems they let him out pretty quickly. Have you talked to him? I haven't in a while, but you know how he is. Nice to see he's alive though. Anyways, what are you up to? Finally got a date?" The twin sister wiggled her eyebrows playfully, waiting for her sister's reaction.

Azumi shook her head, Ron's news and then the sudden question was a quick rollercoaster of emotions. "Um, no. I'm trying to decide what to do after the academy. It's a lot of work, I don't have time for dates. That's more your area anyways. Just do me a favor, don't date anymore criminals."

"Not my fault they're cute! Besides it only happened three times and that last one had been clean for like, four months, made him a bit boring actually, specially when he started talking about going church and youth groups, blergh. I have to go sis, gotta get ready for my date, say hi to Nana for me!" Maker waved goodbye as the screen went blank and the phone returned to Azumi's pocket.

Nana smiled and waved, finally letting go of her trainer's hand. Azumi sighed, she could run a marathon but one conversation with her sister seemed to drain her energy. "Come on Nana, let's go get lunch. I need to look up what Ron got himself into." She grabbed the Gardevoir's hand, who was giving her a confused look, "Don't worry I'm not going to call him. I just want to make sure he isn't doing something stupid."

The two walked away from what was left of the street battle they had just witnessed, going for the nearest cafe to get some lunch before heading out.

The pokémon center was exactly where they needed to be, so Esther nodded and set the pace, charting a course for the closest pokémon center. Along the way, she eyed Nico with interest. “Alola, huh? I’ve never been there but Pyrrha’s from Alola and I hear it’s pretty similar to Oblivia—that’s where I’m from—though I actually took the star rail in from Galar a couple days ago.”

“Are we all new trainers or...?” She looked towards Monty as her voice trailed off. She was already pretty certain Nico was fresh, but this guy? She wouldn’t have been surprised if he was a bit more experienced than he let on.

Oblivia, huh? Monty racked his brain, but...yeah, he'd never heard of it. Alola he had heard of, though he'd never visited. Alolan tourists were usually pretty polite, though, and Nico certainly looked the part with his summer-time outfit. The loud red and green shirt with the khaki shorts...it definitely wasn't something you saw much of on native Kalosians.

Monty sensed Esther's eyes on him as her question trailed off, and his mind worked quick for an answer. "I only started a few weeks ago," he said, which was the truth. "But Oracle was...a gift. She's got a decent amount of prior battle experience." It was the truth, too, just not the whole thing.

The man grinned and stooped down to his partner, who walked side-by-side with him, and joked, "Most of the time she's got a better head on her shoulders for battle than I do!" Oracle rolled her eyes at the comment. Typical useless Monty, stating the obvious.

"You said you took the star rail, though?" The native-Kalosian asked, returning to the conversation at hand. "What brings you to our magnifique region, then?" Esther didn't strike Monty as the tourist-type, especially with her partner's strength. More likely she had some sort of business in mind, and hopefully it would be taking her through Camphrier Town by the 5th.

If they were gonna head to the Pokémon Center, it would be fine with him. The female, Esther asked if they were relatively new trainers.

"I guess..? I've been cooking since i was.. sixteen with my partner Scovillain, but i wasn't into the Pokémon battling scene of things, probably since last month." His experience probably didn't count, but his cooking experience with his Pokémon definitely made up for it. Esther said she had came from the Oblivia region, which he'd never really heard of before. Nico isn't too fond of traveling, and this was kinda his first time leaving Alola, but he thought that this could be a fun experience, not only to explore the other region, but also to expand his cooking expertise.

He followed along with Esther and Monty towards the nearest Pokémon Center, being careful to try not to trip or fall on something, as it wouldn't be the first thing that's happened.

Esther took some pride in being the most traveled of the group, even if it wasn’t by much. The Pokémon center was just ahead, and she slid through the doors while she mulled over Monty’s question. It couldn’t hurt to tell him.

“I ran into some poachers in Galar and caught one of the Houndour they’d captured, learned from a ranger that she—Houndour—was from Kalos, route 10, and here I am—I’m returning her to her home.” Esther suggestively tapped a pokéball on her waist—Houndour's pokéball.

By the time she’d finished her story, they had made their way to the Nurse’s desk and Esther had handed Pyrrha pokéball over to the resident Joy. Huh, the Joy Kalos had different uniforms and hairstyles than their Galar counterparts, though their faces were still pretty identical.

“How about you Nico, what brings you to Kalos? And what’s a Scovillain? An Alola native?”

When they got inside of the Pokémon Center, Esther talked about the Houndour she had found away from it's owner and tried to find it's owner here. After that, she would ask him next. It was about his reason for going to Kalos, and what kind of Pokémon Scovillain is.

"What i'm doing here? Well uh, I'm a chef, and I wanted to learn about different dishes from all around the world! And this is Scovillian." He lets his partner Pokémon outside of it's Pokéball and out comes Pepper. "Scovillian, or Pepper, as I nicknamed him, isn't local to the Alola region. Instead, my parents sent him to me from the Paldea region. They work in Paldea, and so I stayed in Alola to finish school and stuff. They sent Pepper to me recently since they heard from my aunt that I really enjoyed cooking, and soon enough they gave me some funds to travel the different regions!"

He probably sounded a bit silly, as traveling around the world only for food was a bit too much, but hey, it was his dream, and he was going to fulfill it no matter what happens. This was his goal.

Monty's ears perked up at Esther's mention of poachers on Route 10, but kept his well-trained poker face intact as he sent Oracle to the back room with Nurse Audino. Was it the same group that he took care of for Clarke? No, couldn't be. Esther said she ran into them in Galar.

So she was a do-gooder type, then? Not a lot of people would cross the channel just to return a pokémon to its home. Hopefully that attitude wouldn't complicate things. The criminal had half a mind to ditch his new acquaintences entirely and try to find someone a little less morally inclined, but there was no guarantee he'd find someone on her same level before the tournament in Shabboneau.

Whatever. He'd just have to keep his cards close to his chest.

Nico's explanation of his motivations brought Monty a little more peace of mind, given the inherently selfish drive behind them, and it kindled a little respect for the kid in the criminal. They were both out to get stronger, just Nico seemed more interested in gaining strength as a chef than as a trainer.

The Alolan's partner was a strange looking critter, but the longer Monty spent as a trainer the more he learned strange meant hard to predict. They'd have to battle sometime, maybe try and get more experience for Chauffemagne before the Santalune battle. Speaking of which...

"So besides Houndour-returning and dish-divining," Monty asked both of his new acquaintences, "Do either of you have bigger plans for battling? Oracle and I are heading to Santalune City for a gym battle pretty soon, and-" he turned his gaze to Esther, since she was the more experienced battler, "-there's a double-battle tournament in Camphrier Town in a few days if you'd like to join us for that. Should be on the way to Menhi- Route 10."

Paldea? She’d never heard of it. Then again, her brother had only seen fit to introduce her to a few key regions that might interest her. Surely there were other regions she hadn’t heard of and places that begged to be explored. Maybe she’d pay a visit sometime—she’d write it down.

Esther hummed out a non-response and rocked back on her heels. “No, not particularly. I’m just looking to travel; I’m just a small-town girl, livin’ in a lonely world, took the midnight train going anywhere~ ♪ ” After that bit of singsong, the Oblivian leveled her gaze on Monty. “I’ve certainly been itching for a bit more of a challenge; a tournament certainly couldn’t hurt.”

In fact, a tournament sounded perfect, especially if it was already on the way. Though she’d earned a hefty paycheck from her weeks on the farm, pokémon training cost a lot of money! Between herself and her five pokémon, six if Houndour was included, food alone ran her well over a hundred dollars per week. She’d grasp at any chance to save or earn money.

“Oh, by double battle do you mean tag team—and, more importantly, what’s the prize?”

Monty smirked at Esther's emphasis on "challenge", knowing Oracle was likely hoping for the same thing at the tournament. His partner's battling since her fight with the poacher's Pawniard had been almost half-hearted, but he could tell her blood was boiling during their bout with Esther and her drake.

Personally, he was hoping it would be a clean sweep; an easy smash-and-grab, with the broken glass subbed for defeated pokémon. He knew it likely wouldn't be as simple as that, though, so Esther's confidence was reassuring. Maybe he did pick right, after all.

"Double battle as in both of us having a partner on the field, against another team of two," Monty explained, fairly certain he was remembering the details right. "One pokémon each per round, I think." He did only pay half-attention to Cormier's phone call the day before. "As for the prize-" That part Monty did remember. "-it's supposed to be a thousand dollars for first place, with a choice item from the Shabboneau art collection for each of us."

"'Course, I'm more worried about the money," the criminal lied casually, facetiously feigning discretion as he jabbed a thumb toward Nurse Joy's counter. "Oracle's groomer bill gets a little expensive."

No reason to come up with some grand excuse for wanting to win...whatever random painting Cormier wanted. A thousand bucks was a tantalizing enough prize, anyway, and he wasn't lying about his partner's high groomer bills.

"Poli~!" Politoed cried happily under the water, posing with a big smile by Reina and Swampert. It had not gotten to know much of Desmond's friends Pokemon yet, but even if this Swampert seemed super focused and serious it seemed happy to share this moment with it. Course Desmond might've objected to the use of "friend" here but in Politoed's mind they were friends Desmond just had not yet admitted it.

Snap!

As always Desmond had made sure to get a set of pictures for himself, once he excited back on dry land he'd print them out to share with Reina but at the moment he seemed pleased with the shot. Politoed seemed to swim by him as Reina seemed to inspect the ship and preposed taking a look inside; this seemed like a dumb idea which had been Desmond's initial thought, but on the other hand it provided oppertunity for some special pictures...his inner photographer had trouble passing that up.

Then the thought of Pokemon using the sunken ship as a home surfaced, and his face seemed to shrivel up.

Thankfully before he even had a chance to ask "if you check it first" Reina already began her inspection as she made some noises to the exterior of the ship, and seemed convinced it was safe. Desmond was...less than convinced himself, and glanced over to Politoed.

"You go in first, maybe you'll find a new friend or something." Desmond muttered, and Politoed cried happily as it swam inside the sunken ship and had began its "investigation" inside as Desmond swam close by Reina though had yet moved into the ship himself.

Monty had just mentioned that they would be going towards Camphrier Town, Which is another area where not only he could learn some new dishes, and try out some battling styles right after. He probably wouldn't participate in said tournament, but he'll probably cheer on his newfound friends, especially since he isn't much in the battling scene of Pokémon.

"I wouldn't be participating, but i'll be cheering for both of you! And Pepper will too!"

So after their Pokémon are healed, they'll probably be settinng off to Camphier Town, but before he forgets, he had his cooking gear shipped out to Kalos a few days before his flight, so it should've arrived here by now. Walking over to the delivery guy in the Pokémart, he picked up his package, which were his cooking utensils, which now he's got everything he needs. Awesome. He's fully ready to go on an adventure, and he knows he and Pepper will do their best.

~Aldon...~

Aldon began swimming downwards. Slowly but surely making his way deeper into the ocean. Skol was swimming about at a somewhat swift pace. "Go inside the ship?! Maybe we'll find a omanyte in there!" Aldon said swimming towards the boat. Although slow, Aldon swam, he managed to swim just fast enough to unintentionally photo bomb the picture. Aldon was just in the background of the picture. Arms and legs spread out like a starfish as he floated around for a few moments. He made his way over to one of the windows, pressing his face to it. Skol had made his way lower, swimming just a few inches over Desmond before slowly reaching the boat.

A thousand dollars? Now that brought a grin to Esther’s face. “Glad to be working with you partner!”

At this point Nurse Joy had returned Pyrrha’s pokéball and Esther clipped it to her waist.

“If we want to score the prize then we should probably get some training in, make sure our teamwork is up to snuff. You mentioned going to Santalune, right? That’d be a good start.”

Esther had learned from a fair bit from her time in Lumiose and she knew Santalune was the location of Kalos’ bug-type gym, a frequent first-pick for first-time league challengers. She had been thinking about a trip there herself, eager to test herself against a gym leader who’d pose more of a challenge then her fresh contemporaries.

“Do you have any pokémon aside from Oracle? Wouldn’t hurt to know what we’re working with, maybe we can figure out a few good pairings.”

“Partner” had a nice ring to it, and Monty returned Esther’s enthused grin. He’d have to remember to shoot Cormier a text and let him know he found someone to pair up with.

As if on cue, Oracle stalked out from behind the counter as Esther mentioned her name. The Absol's coat was freshly cleaned, courtesy of the lovely Pokémen Center, and she had a pep in her step that was immediately soured when she remembered who was waiting for her on the other side of the counter.

Monty hadn't gotten rid of their tag alongs yet?! How annoying. Her trainer was getting into the habit of making decisions that entailed massive consequences for her general quality of life, and this was like the straw that broke the Numel's back! Trainers brought pokémon, and other pokémon meant constant annoyance for her!

Sure, Chauffemagne and Abnégarde learned their place quickly enough, but the Absol's mind flashed back to a couple weeks prior when she was subjected to the yip-yapping of Vulpix and Pikachu all day. These trainers seemed equally as chatty as Monty's decrepit comrades had been, but she just hoped their pokémon wouldn't be as loud and obnoxious.

Maybe it was a good thing that the girl was still around, though. Oracle might get another chance to thrash that insolent little drake of hers. The Absol eyed Nico's Scovillain warily, not recognizing the foreign pokémon, so she opted for a glare as her gaze passed over it.

"Welcome back," Monty said to Oracle as she sulked up to him, recieving a disapproving look in response. "I was just about to tell Esther about your teammates." The criminal turned back to his new acquaintence as he withdrew two balls from his coat, one Dusk and one Quick. "I've got two others," he explained, "A Houndour of my own, and an Eevee. I've only had Houndour half as long as Oracle, though, and Eevee less than that.

Monty didn't want to release them just yet, so he slipped the balls back into his pocket. He didn't want Chauffemagne off-putting their new companions just yet with his patented interrogation-by-smell, and he wasn't trying to deal with Abnégarde's smothering just yet, either.

Monty wanted to hear about the rest of Esther’s team, though. If her other pokémon were as strong as Pyrrha, they’d be in good shape for whatever the tournament threw their way. "If you two don't mind a little walking and talking," his gaze bounced between Esther and Nico, "Santalune’s not getting any closer. Best to get started while the morning's still young, eh? And-" Monty's gaze settled on Nico, "-we should be able to stop by a galette vendor on the way to Route 5. There isn't a better breakfast in all of Kalos, I swear!”

Oracle rolled her eyes at the galette suggestion. It really wasn't anything special, and definitely not worth the wait. Her claws flexed in eager agreement with his desire to leave, though. It was about time they got this show on the road!

Soon enough, they were walking again, to Santalune City! But first, Monty mentioned a galette vendor. Nico had never heard of it before, of course, but it sounded awesome! He was definitely open to trying new things, and this was one of them. Galette sounded nice, and followed suit behind Monty as they went toward Santalune City, and said Galette vendor. He was pretty excited for this.

"I can't wait to try this 'galette' thing! It sounds amazing!" as he follwed behind Monty, to reach route 5 soon.

“You had my curiosity, but now you’ve got my attention!” The promise of new food brought out a different kind of hunger, a more traditional kind. With a pep in her step, Esther led the way forward. She got about ten steps before she remembered that she, in fact, did not know where she was going. So, she promptly whirled around to give Monty a dirty, yet imploring, look. If these Galettes were as good as he said, then his slow arse was holding her back! Didn’t he know what happened when you got between a girl and her breakfast?

Though on that note, she had a new pokémon and she’d yet to find out how they liked their breakfast. Esther tapped the second and fifth pokéballs at her waist and out came two equally round Pokémon: Munna & Goomy. The former immediately floated into a lazy slump atop Esther’s head, while the latter looked around the bustling town with trepidation. “Pari, help me out. What does Nâva like to eat?”

Something seemed to grab Goomy’s attention, and a few silent moments passed as Esther and her pokémon exchanged blank stares. Before long, Esther perked up and clarity in her eyes noticeably returned.

“You’re not too picky, huh, that’s great!”

An affectionate head rub turned into Nâva sliming its way up Esther’s arm, an action that turned the Oblivian’s grin stiff for but a moment. After a moment of internal struggle, she turned to Monty and brandished her slimy fingers. “Don’t suppose you know somewhere I can wash this off?”

Monty felt a little funny when he first started talking to Oracle, but the Absol was surprisingly expressive for a pokémon so he got used to conversation with her pretty quickly. It helped that talking to one's pokémon was more or less the norm, anyway, but Esther seemed to take it to a whole nother level.

The criminal and Absol exchanged a confused look as their acquaintence asked a very specific question to the round pink blob on her head, but neither of the freshly-released pokémon gave so much as a peep in response. Esther and her Goomy? stared blankly at each other, the silence defeaning as Monty waited for some sort of verbal or physical stimuli, but then Esther just...figured it out? 'Not too picky?'

This chick was friggin nuts!

Monty gave her the side-eye as he turned to survey the street for a nearby vendor, spotting the same one he and Oracle visited just a little bit ago and pointing it out to Nico and Esther. "The line isn't too long, we're in luc-"

He heard Esther's question and turned back, spotting her slimey fingers and doing his best not to wrinkle his nose. Oh, gross! Did she even know where that thing had been?! "They should have some napkins at the galette stand for, uh, that. Otherwise there're sanisettes up and down the street."

Monty pointed one out farther down the road, conveniently placed nearby the street vendor. He gave a "follow me" wave as he started walking, and Oracle stuck close to his side as she eyed Esther's slimy purple creature warily. That thing better stay well away from her and her clean coat!

He was so excited to try out the galettes, and luckily, the line was short too! It was such a good day. They sounded amazing, coming from Monty, and maybe he could learn how to cook it soon as well! Woah. The Pokémon on top of Esther's head look cool. It definitely wasn't local to the Alola region, but that Pokémon looked so slimy. It looked kinda weird too. But they just had to go to the other store nearby to get Esther clean, so they'd probably have to wait a bit longer for said galette. But, he could understand it. I mean, he wouldn't want slime all over him either.

Esther grimaced. She could feel the slime drying against her skin. Good thing the line was short and the napkins within reach. She grabbed a handful and then—“Uhhh...”

The Oblivian blanched as the napkins ripped against the sticky slime. “Wow, fantastic.”

Evidently, napkins were not the way to go. “Right,” she swiveled to face Monty. “I’m gonna find somewhere to deal with this but let me give you my order before I go—something sweet, something bitter, something savory, something spicy, and three that are, well, surprise me! Did’ya get all that? Great, thanks! I’ll find you in a bit!”

With that, Esther scampered off, eyes peeled for the nearest bathroom.
