Open ♫ Tales of Harmonia ♫

(Main Thread)

A quick preface ~

In my short time on this earth, I've found there are few things that connect people more than music. It has a way of expressing our truest selves in a way we can't imagine, only feel- in a way that bypasses the conscious and speaks to us on a deeper level.

I only hope that through this story we craft together, we're able to express those selves to each other, even if they're only the tiniest fragments of that strange, fantastic, enigmatic whole.

Welcome to Harmonia.

Welcome to Harmonia, a world where music is life.

Seven regions each resonate with a unique musical style, from classical elegance to rebellious rock. In this diverse and harmonious realm, your character's fighting style and personality are dictated by their chosen musical affinity.

Together, we'll embark on an epic quest to protect Harmonia's unity, battling the Dissonance Conspiracy in a world-spanning musical duel.

Are you ready to create a character, explore vibrant cultures, and craft your own musical destiny?

The history of Harmonia is rich and complex, marked by a series of events that have shaped its musical regions, nations, and conflicts.

In the distant past, before recorded history, Harmonia was a realm of unbridled chaos, where music and rhythm were untamed forces. This era is known as the "Age of Discord." The world was populated by warring tribes, each with their own unique musical styles.

A wise and powerful musician named Harmonius rose to prominence. He was able to unite the tribes by teaching them to harmonize their music and establish order. This event was called the Harmonic Revolution, marking the beginning of recorded history and the "Age of Harmony."

Harmonius divided Harmonia into seven distinct regions, each attuned to a specific style of music. These regions became the foundation for the world's societies and cultures. They are:

  • Harmonium: Classical music, known for its elegance and order.
  • Jazzaria: Jazz and blues, representing improvisation and individuality.
  • Rockaria: Rock and metal, reflecting strength and rebellion.
  • Technosymphonia: Electronic and techno, symbolizing innovation and change.
  • Folkoria: Folk music, connecting with nature and tradition.
  • Rhapsodia: World and fusion music, embodying diversity and unity.
  • Operatica: Opera and vocal music, focusing on drama and emotion.

The world soon experienced a period of immense prosperity known as the Great Resonance, a time when the seven regions lived in perfect harmony. During this era, music and magic intertwined to bring about peace, prosperity, and technological advancement.

As the Great Resonance began to wane, a group of radicals from various regions rose in protest, claiming that the unity enforced by the Melodic Council was stifling creativity. This led to a period of civil unrest and minor clashes known as the Dissonance Uprising.

The world's economy is driven by the production and distribution of musical instruments, compositions, and performances. The regions trade music-related goods, and their unique musical styles shape the economic specialization of each region.

Each region exports its style of music and musical instruments, contributing to a global exchange of culture and commerce.

Harmonia's regions have established intricate trade routes known as "Harmonious Highways" that crisscross the land. These routes are used for the exchange of musical instruments, compositions, and enchanted items. They contribute to the economic prosperity of each region and encourage the sharing of musical traditions.

Musical Identity: An individual's musical affinity plays a significant role in their identity. It influences their personal style, values, and often dictates their chosen region. This affinity is deeply ingrained in every person's sense of self.

Cultural Exchange: Harmonia values the exchange of cultural experiences, with festivals, gatherings, and events that encourage people to explore and appreciate the music of other regions. This fosters a strong sense of unity and diversity within the society.

Musical Festivals: Harmonia hosts a wide range of musical festivals, both region-specific and world-spanning. The "Harmonia Festival," held every decade, is the most prominent, celebrating the world's diversity in music. Other festivals occur at various intervals, further cementing Harmonia's love for music and togetherness.

Magical Training: Harmonia offers educational institutions where individuals can learn to harness their musical affinities for magical purposes. These academies, known as "Harmony Institutes," provide formal magical education and training in various regions.

Artisans and Craftsmen: In Harmonia, artisans and craftsmen play a crucial role in society. Musical instrument makers, composers, and performers are highly respected professions, and they contribute to the world's economy through the creation and trade of musical goods.

Strong Alliances and Rivalries: While the regions maintain a sense of unity and collaboration, they also have friendly rivalries based on their musical traditions. These rivalries often take the form of musical competitions and events where regions compete to showcase their unique styles.

Harmony Institutes: These institutions offer magical education, allowing individuals to train and master their magical abilities based on their musical affinity. Graduates often go on to become magical defenders (the law enforcement), performers, or educators.

Musical Academies: Harmonia is home to prestigious musical academies that train performers and composers. Graduates can pursue careers as professional musicians, conductors, or composers, and their skills are in high demand for performances and festivals.

Artisan Guilds: Artisan guilds are prevalent in Harmonia and cater to instrument makers, composers, and conductors. Apprenticeships are common in these guilds, and many individuals go on to establish their careers as craftsmen or artists, and fairly recently, fashion designers and seamstresses.

Guardians of Melodic Relics: Individuals from various regions may follow the path of becoming Guardians who protect the various Melodic Relics scattered across Harmonia. This is a prestigious and respected role in society.

Council Service: Ambitious individuals may seek a career within the Melodic Council, serving as Council representatives, magical advisors, or elsewhere within the Government.

Festivals and Performers: Many inhabitants of Harmonia choose to pursue careers as performers, participating in festivals, concerts, and other musical events. These careers allow them to share their musical talents with the world.

Magic in Harmonia is directly linked to musical styles. Individuals have specific musical affinities that allow them to channel and manipulate magic in alignment with their chosen genre.

For example, classical music affinity enables the use of precision and elegance in magic toward tactical and support-oriented uses, while rock and metal affinities employ aggressive, offensive magic with strength and rebellion.

Musical instruments serve as conduits for magic, with each type of instrument providing unique abilities. Characters draw power from their chosen instrument and musical affinity.

The potency of magic is connected to the world's harmony and the collective resonance of its music. When the world is in perfect harmony, magic is more potent, but disruptions in the world's balance can weaken magical abilities.

That said, taking possession of Melodic Relics, which are imbued with Musical Energy, can have unpredictable effects on a user's magic.

Is there a Threat in the past similar in level to an Adult Dragon attacking the land?

I don't think so actually - the most turbulent time in Harmonia's history was the Age of Discord, when it was just tribes of different musical styles constantly at war with one another.

Since the Harmonic Revolution, things have been quite peaceful. Up until recently, anyway.

The threat that our main party has to face, however, does have the potential to scale into something as dangerous as an Adult Dragon attacking the land, so there's that!

One, roughly how old would students at/graduates of Harmony Institutes or Musical Academies be? Do those take the place of middle/high school? Or are they more like universities? Or can anyone of any age enroll? How many years would they be there?

Great question! Students in Harmonia typically begin their formal education around the age of 5. They attend primary schools, where they receive a broad and well-rounded education.

They then enter Secondary/High School from 11-16, where education is still somewhat broad, but there are more opportunities for taking specialized electives and subjects.

At the age of 16, students take their "Musical Aptitude Exams," which assess their general knowledge of mathematics, history etc.

They will also receive guidance and counselling regarding their affinity with different musical styles, though by the time students turn 16, they will generally have discovered one or two styles they really 'gel' with.

Even so, taking counselling can help them discover other styles they may have good chemistry with.

From 16 onwards, they can then begin enrolment at Musical Academies or Harmony Institutes, or begin training for other vocations such as Artisanry.

People can and often do take gap years, try out multiple different vocations, or even spend time travelling after the MAE's, so you can find people across all ages at post-16 education, though predominantly under 23's.

Years can be a tricky one after MAE's. It honestly depends on the course, region, and institute. For example, training at a Magical Academy to become a Defender (law enforcement) or other role can take anywhere from 2-3 years, when taking into account entrance exams, academy training, field training etc.

To help, you can follow this general guideline:

Harmony Institutes: 2-3 years

Musical Academies: 3-5 years

Artisan Guilds: 2-4 years

Guardians of Melodic Relics: Harmony Institute graduation, then a further 3 years training

Council Service: Accepts different educational backgrounds depending on the role

Festivals and Performers: Accepts all educational backgrounds, but graduation from a Musical Academy makes you more sought-after

Two, you mentioned "underground arenas" in the description for Rockaria. Would I be correct in assuming by arena you do indeed mean a place for friendly musical competition?

With Rockarians you never know if 'friendly' is the right word lol, but yes, Arenas are generally used as a hangout spot for bands to play, 'battle' against one another, and generally rock out. They often serve as venues for performances too.

1. How far goes the technology of the world? I know Technosymphonia is supposed the center of advancement, but how far are we actually talking? Is it closer to the modern era, like what we have now, or more closer to a sci-fi age, like with laser tech, hover tech, holographs, etc. all readily available or at least mid-progress into being created?

Closer to sci-fi, however you'll only find the most advanced stuff (hover tech, holograms, etc.) in Technosymphonia and specific pockets of the other regions. The level of technology used in most places is basically what we have now. In fact, Folkloria, as mainly rural and natural region, would be bereft of the vast majority of technological advances seen elsewhere!

2. What defines Rhapsodia as a melting pot? Does it mean that it is most known for the fusion/hybrid genre, or that it's essentially a culmination of all the different cultures and musical styles of the other parts of the world?

Remember the Age of Discord? Well, there were a lot of different tribes at war, many of them being much smaller and tighter-knight than the bigger communities. Once the Harmonic Revolution came about, the years had been somewhat cruel to them, and their numbers were culled.

In a bid to help sustain their styles and traditions for generations to come, Harmonius dedicated a whole region entirely to these smaller tribes whose styles were often a fusion or mix of multiple already-existing styles- a 'melting pot', if you will. That region became Rhapsodia, and stands out from the other regions due to sheer variety and diversity amongst it's people.

3. From what I've seen, the regions take after these genres: Classic, Orchestral, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Metal, Electro, Techno, Opera and a fusion of this bunch. What about other genres like, say, Hip Hop or Pop? Are they an unknown in the world, are they part of a lesser, unmentioned or unnamed region, or could they all stem from inspired Rhapsodians?

Exactly right- both Hip Hop and Pop, in this world, would have originated in Rhapsodia, becoming branches of the larger Rhapsodian musical tree. Other genres we may have to deal with on a case-by-case basis, but there's a place for dang near everything here, I'd say.

I have a question before I create a character.

Are there mythical creatures that exist in Harmonia? Something like centaurs, dragons, etc? Wanted to see if characters like that could exist in Harmonia, or only humans (and normal animals) are in Harmonia?

Mythical creatures in Harmonia are just like in the real world- mythical. Since the beginning of recorded history began with the Harmonic Revolution, stuff like like centaurs, dragons would perhaps feature in myths, legends, and folktales passed down through generations.

So yes, Harmonia is essentially just humans and your standard wildlife (all with a rhythm-based twist to their usual selves - I'd post a compendium, but in the interests of not getting too deep we can cross that bridge later)

Name: Sebastian "Seb" Crescendo (also known as Aurelio)

Age: 20

Region: Harmonium (originally)

Appearance: A lively young man, at 5'11 with medium, somewhat unkempt shining blonde hair and mischievous purple eyes. He is often found wearing a black and grey travelling tunic with gold accents, alongside a rucksack.

1697289720349.png

When under the guise of Aurelio, he uses an appearance-modifying spell, causing him to don a golden masquerade mask, his garments morphing into an obnoxiously bright, equally aureate suit

1697289747518.png
1697289764297.png

Personality: Seb, the adventurous and passionate traveling bard of Jazzaria, embodies a free-spirited and artistic soul.

With a mysterious aura under his alias, Seb's resilience led him to abandon his classical upbringing in Harmonium for the soothing embrace of lounge music.

His empathetic and charismatic nature weaves mesmerizing tales through his melodies, creating a musical journey that captivates audiences.

His inquisitive and open-minded disposition allows him to explore new styles, cultures, and people during his travels, shaping a multifaceted personality that harmonizes classical discipline with the laid-back allure of lounge, setting him apart in the world of Harmonia.

Backstory: In the heart of Harmonium, amidst grand concert halls and classical traditions, a young boy named Sebastian Crescendo was groomed to succeed his famed conductor father, Victor Crescendo.

From a tender age, his life was a symphony of strict discipline, hours of practice, and an expectation to perpetuate the family's classical legacy.

Yet, one fateful day, while wandering away from a family event celebrating his excellent MAE results, Sebastian stumbled upon a small band from Jazzaria, whose lounge melodies danced through the night.

These soothing sounds captivated him, resonating with an unfamiliar part of his heart. A transformation stirred within him, and the allure of lounge music began to outshine the traditions he had known.

At the age of 16, guided by the call of that evocative melody, he fled the comforts of Harmonium and embarked on a journey to Jazzaria. There, training under the band that opened his eyes, The Midnight Groove Collective, he embraced the enigmatic alias of "Aurelio," becoming a folk legend known for his golden melodies, fusing the worlds of classical and lounge in a harmonious voyage of self-discovery.

Today, he joins the Melodic Vanguard in their world-spanning mission as their resident bard, using the dulcet tones of his keyboard (and whatever other instrument available to him) to soothe the soul, rest the mind, and free the heart.

Music Style: Seb's style is a fusion of classical discipline and the laid-back allure of lounge music. He's a versatile musician, primarily skilled in playing the keyboard, which he often carries as a portable instrument during his travels.

His performances as "Aurelio" are characterized by smooth lounge melodies, resonating with a golden quality that captures the essence of his blonde hair. Seb's music tells evocative stories and creates a soothing, calming ambiance.

Weapons/Instruments (if any): Due to his upbringing, Seb is very proficient in the piano, and after his travels, has become adept with the keyboard, and saxophone. He keeps various tools (such as sheets for capturing new melodies, rations, a rope) in his rucksack.

Magic & Techniques: Seb's support-based repertoire mainly consists of disarming, calming, and easing others into gentler disposition, with elements of both classical and jazz coming into play.

Resonant Shield - Seb can play a resolute melody to create a protective shield of harmonic resonance, deflecting attacks and magical spells. In order to maintain it, the melody must be kept up and on-beat. If matched-up and timed exactly right with the rhythm of incoming attacks, Seb can reflect them back. Keyboard makes the tempo easier to switch up and sustain.

Melodic Healing: He can use soothing melodies to mend wounds and restore vitality to himself and others. However, this drains the Magical Energy from nearby surroundings, which can have unpredictable effects depending on the environment. Saxophone increases the healing potency for each ounce of energy used.

Lullaby : Playing a relaxing, soft tune, Seb slows down the rhythm of the area around him, causing all living things to slow down in tandem and become more calm. The longer the tune is played, the further along relaxation the targets are brought, until sleep.

Seb himself is affected by this, and must work harder the longer the tune is played to stay awake and on beat. Piano quickens the rate at which targets are relaxed.

Waltz : Seb's currently most demanding spell, the 'Waltz' spell invokes the elegance and grace of a traditional waltz dance. When cast, it imbues the caster and their partner (if applicable) with the enchanting ability to dance with extraordinary finesse.

So long as the dancers remain in good rhythm, the caster and their partner move with enhanced agility, grace, and precision., up to 5 minutes.

During this time, they can effortlessly evade attacks, perform intricate maneuvers, and navigate tricky terrain, making them highly elusive in battle or tricky situations.

Waltz' duration is halved to a maximum of 2m 30s if cast without a partner.

If cast with a partner, and two traditionally classical instruments are used to cast Waltz, the Waltz will finish with a powerful gust of wind blowing away all nearby.

Masquerade: A spell learnt from a reclusive order in Jazzaria, this spell allows the user to briefly guise themselves under an illusion of their choosing, so long as they can picture it in their mind. The illusion stays active for as long as there is Magical Energy to fuel it.

Name: Philippe Oslo, aka the Highway King

Age: 23

Region: Unknown

Appearance: Just as secretive about his true appearance as he is about the rest of his identity, Philippe's outfit completely obscures his person, leading only few people to know about his shoulder-length, unkempt and quite messy blonde hair, ember-orange eyes and scarred, rough face. The rest of him is about 6'5", with a more lean, albeit somewhat trained, muscular build and pale, fair skin tone.

The very outfit that completely hides his identity consists of a black motorcycle helmet with a red visor, at most only ever revealing his eyes, yet not their actual color. Matching with the helmet's colors is a black, spiked leather jacket with a scarf and jersey shirt underneath, long, black leather gloves and equally dark, tall boots covering his hands and feet, midnight-black pants bringing together his biker outfit into a nice black palette with only his helmet's visor being a different color.

(Source)

Personality:
Best described as a 'modern day Robin Hood', the Highway King travels about on his motorcycle, drifting from place to place, solving problems with as little words as possible. Nobody knows who he is and few even barely know about his face and age, and Philippe is one to keep it that way. With his quiet and reserved attitude, he is as much of a wildcard as his past entails as one would never be able to quite predict what goes in this stranger's mind, though rest assured, it usually is nothing bad. Usually.

Backstory: Oslo's past lies in obscurity and undefined rumors that all tell a different tall tale about his upbringing. Some say he's a Rhapsodian looking to help bring people together, some say he's a thrill seeker from Technosymphonia with a golden heart, some just say he's a good samaritan who either loves to travel.. or is on the run from a greater danger that threatens to catch up to him eventually. Either way, Philippe is not one to easily reveal such details as he rather finds them trivial, so this type of information is typically only revealed to those who stood close to him for some time already.

Music Style: Philippe is one with a musical style that appears unique to Harmonia itself - appearing to combine the tempo of rockarian music and technosymphonian instruments, Oslo's style puts a new spin on his culture's style of involving speed and thrill-seeking by remixing it with the music of other regions using his keytar and musicycle into its own genre - Eurobeat.

Weapons: The Highway King is known for his two most prominent tools - first up, his most iconic Motorcycle. Appearing to have been souped up at some point in Technosymphonia, it is midnight-black in tone with neon lights lined underneath the main parts which can have their color changed manually, making the vehicle appear more futuristic in nature (think TRON).

This motorcycle is pre-equipped with a digital control panel and extendable speakers, which also replace the exhaust as, instead of gas, the motorcycle runs entirely on electricity converted from vibrations from soundwaves that bounce off of it, as well as a portion of magic produced through it.

Lining the handlebars are several buttons which produce sounds akin to a synthesizer, allowing the Highway King to use his magic even while riding his vehicle. For the cases where driving on the ground is not possible, the Motorcycle can be kicked into its Hovercycle mode, which turns the wheels sideways to make the vehicle that bit smaller.

Secondly, strapped to his back, Oslo carries a silver bag with a Chrome Keytar held within. This keytar functions much like any keyboard, capable of changing its tunes, volume, etc. with several dials, buttons and displays. Just like the motorcycle, it runs entirely on vibrations and primarily magic, making it so it has to be played in order to be recharged.

Magic & Techniques: The Highway King's magic, while not frequently used, is known to always be something different from the last time it was cast, leading people to believe that Oslo has much more available when, really, it is because his works are so easily changed and adaptable to all kinds of situations.

Accelerate - By playing a quick tune that quickly picks up in pace, Philippe can place a sort of buff upon one or multiple targets, accelerating them up until thrice their own speed, or alternatively accelerating some sort of process or action that they are currently taking or that is currently affecting them in some form. This buff can last up to 10 seconds, but tends to run out rather quickly.

Deccelerate - Starting off with a fast tune and rapidly slowing down, the opposite effect to Accelerate can be created, instead slowing down one or multiple targets up until twice their own speed, the alternative targetting also functioning much the same and allowing one's actions or effect to take place at a much slower pace. Unlike Accelerate, this spell can last only up to 5 seconds, but tends to feel like it's stuck around for longer.

Reverse - Through reversing the very tune used for both Accelerate and Deccelerate, a reversing effect can be caused that can cause one or multiple targets to either reverse their movements, actions or the effect of whatever they had just caused or had been caused to them. However, reverse can only go back as far as three seconds, so any actions taken before or past those seconds remain unaffected.

Aerocopy - By maintaining a rapid-paced song, Oslo is capable of creating up to six wind-based afterimages of himself. These afterimages can only be damaged and evaporized with magic, though they themselves are incapable of physically interacting with others. Because of being infused with a small portion of Oslo's magic, they are capable of using his spells, albeit only the one below as of currently.

Windstrike - Mixing quick plays of high-pitched, ascending notes into his tunes and songs, the Highway King is able to form the surrounding winds into little pellets that whistle through the air and can hit his foes at blinding speeds, albeit not with very much power on account of the fact that they are nothing but tiny, compressed pockets of air. Even though they aren't lethal, they can still very much put on a lot of hurt on a target if multiple can hit consecutively.

Name: Helen Belle

Age: 27

Region: Operatica

Appearance:

2122621_G0zICrw9.png

Personality:
A vibrant woman who is by no means humble. She is proud and proud of it! Helen cannot stand what she considers blows to her pride, and she is often overconfident in her abilities as a result. She is incredibly social and is that rare kind of celebrity that embraces her publicity and openly converses with her fans. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and her shows of emotion are almost always over the top. It can be hard to be around her at times because of her eccentric behavior, but overall she is good natured.

Backstory: She was born and raised in Technopolis by her Mother and Father, but when she was young the two went through a divorce due to their conflicting personalities. One decided to join the Opera, packing their bags and running away.
So Helen was passed around between the two houses, her Mother in Operatica and her Father remaining in Technopolis. Her parents pressured her into studying both musical styles until, as was bound to happen, she fused the two styles and found that she enjoyed the result. She kept composing music until she graduated from the prestigious school, and was scouted by a famous Opera company for her singing talents. She eventually rose to fame within Ariastrum for the heart wrenching performances she made within their Opera halls.

Music Style: A quite unique and bold style that features synthesized beats with angelic and meaningful lyrics. The sounds used to make the beats often change from piece to piece, but one thing always remains; The power to draw deep emotion from those who hear it.
Spoiler: Potential Example
While I myself could not find too many pieces that fit the exact sounds I imagine, the inspiration for such a clash of genres came from the song

The End of Hatsune Miku
Techno Ballads

(Please excuse the fact that I am unable to get a link due to a sequence of unfortunate events)

Weapons: She is proficient in the Oboe, and carries a combination synthesizer-sequencer that straps across her shoulders to form a playable surface (like those things they use at baseball games to hold the hotdogs while the venders walk around). She also uses a drum machine on occasion, but prefers her other instruments. She can also play the violin.

Her violin has special strings attached that convert vibrations into physical waves that vary in intensity and speed of launch based off the intensity of the vibrations. The strings are imbibed with this magic and magic that helps keep them from snapping.

Her synthesizer also reacts to the slightly unique frequencies her violin makes, making noises appropriate to the tempo of her playing.

Magic & Techniques: Due to the combination of genres, her unique powers induce emotions that may not actually exist in the hearer in question. Her techniques involve creating impressions and manipulation emotional response based on the rhythm and mood of her music.

Emozione: Using her music, she can influence the emotions of those around her. The emotions grow more intense the longer the hearer hears the tune, and the emotion fades fairly quickly after she stops playing.
A bright, simple technological tune will bring happiness
A dour, subdued Techno ballad can bring one towards sadness
So on and so forth, intense tunes bring anger, and winking, tinkling, ominous tunes bring fear, ect.
Physical impressions can also be made, such as pain or pleasure, but the rhythms required for it are much more complex and require exact precision to maintain.

Impressioni: Using tunes with lyrics conveying specific things, she can create an image of the thing in question. The illusion is maintained for as long as she plays her instrument, and only affects those who can hear her playing.

Creazione: If she can maintain the effects of Impressioni for a certain amount of time, the thing that is being projected will become real. The amount of time needed increases based on the size of the object. An object the size of a book would take about 20 seconds, but a car would take more time than she has breath for.

Love and Pain: A classic Operatic spell passed between the most important of those who live in Operatica. It allows one's own intense feelings to pour out and become tangible effects. It drains lots of energy from the body of the player.
-Strong feelings of Love towards certain listeners will increase the power of their spells for 5 minutes after she plays her special Love Aria.
-Strong feelings of Hate towards certain listeners will inflict an intense, body wracking migraine towards those who dared anger her. It lasts for 5 seconds.
-Strong negative emotions (sadness, anger, fear) cause physical reactions (Sadness causes intense crying, Anger causes temporary blindness, Fear causes intense shaking) these effects last for 1 minute
-Strong Positive emotions (Happiness) can heal wounds and prevent pain. The pain prevention lasts for 5 minutes.

Name: Roni Jones (Veronica Elizabeth Jones Hartwell III)

Age: 26

Region: Technosymphonia (Previously Harmonium)

Appearance:
download20231006174159.png
Roni is an average height gal standing at 5'7", she is pretty slender and very pale. Roni has several cybernetic prosthetics including her left arm, both her legs, her left eye, her vocal cords, one of her lungs and part of her spine. She also has severe burn scars all up her left side. She wears clothes that do show some of the scarring but she wears a electronic face mask that has a pixelated screen that can show different expressions that she can control with her brain so that it functions like an actual face.

Personality: Roni is energetic and excitable, she loves to chat to people and hang out and is practically always in the mood for a party. However she isn't great at opening up to people and never shows her face in public anymore. If her mask gets removed she breaks down into a full panic attack. Every so often when she catches sight of her reflection she seems to get lost in her own thoughts and will often have a sad expression. She is bisexual.

Backstory: Roni, born Veronica Elizabeth Jones Hartwell III, was born into the esteemed Hartwell family of Harmonium. The Hartwell's are a relatively influential family with a strong standing and an excellent public image. Roni was being raised to continue her families legacy but never really felt right with herself, her tastes, hobbies, her obsession with country music and almost everything about her went against her families strong traditional values. But she bit her tongue and hid how she felt until after her 17th birthday she'd had enough and she ran away, she stole her father's car and drove off with out looking back, but it was wet and it was stormy the night she left and in a terrible turn of events she got into a horrific car accident near the outskirts of Technosymphonia, with no identification and severe burns and injuries, she was admitted to a hospital as a Jane Doe, she woke up 6 weeks later unable to speak or see clearly. She was given her prosthetics and eventually began to find some kind of norm. When she had regained her sight a bit she had written down that her name was Roni Jones, finally able to leave her repressive family behind her, on her first day of physical therapy after she'd thought she'd become more at piece with her new prosthetics she went to the bathroom for a second and saw her face for the first time since the accident and she freaked out, her face was barely recognisable, she broke down and refused to leave the bathroom until they agreed to make her something to conceal her face. She spent another month refusing to show her face until she was given her face mask, the mask made her calm and helped her to begin to come to terms with her physical deformities. Once she was fully rehabilitated, after 3 years she got back into her passion for country music, but with a twist. Even with her new prosthetic vocal cords she never really got her confidence in her singing voice back but she stumbled across remix's and the alure of techno music and used this new information to turn her passion into a career and by the time she turned 22 she had become a pretty famous DJ. She was eventually scouted to join the Vanguard do to her popularity as well as her unique form of magic.

Music Style: Country Trap (Remixing)
A completely ordinary, standard, run of the mill country bop

Weapons: She has a electrified lasso.

Magic & Techniques: Roni can absorb the powers of those around her and combine them to create a remixed power, she can wield 3 remixed powers at one time, with the oldest being removed to make way for the 4th and so on. The prosthetic in her spine is connected to her nervous system using nanobots that have since spread and strengthened her muscle tissue and skin across her whole body making her stronger and more durable, to be specific she can withstand most blades but she isn't bullet proof and she is strong enough to punch through a brick wall but not bend metal.

Name: Hatfield, Friedric Johannes

Age: 26

Region: Rockaria (Currently)/Harmonium (Formerly)

Appearance: Friedric stands around 5'7" on a fit frame, as his brown hair is tied back, reaching around his midsection. His green eyes have a lost look to them. He wears a black dress shirt, and pants under normal conditions with Steel toe boots to help prevent lost toes from his Axe Guitar.

Personality: Friedric is a very laid back person, and despite what his style of Music Is, he is a more quiet person. As such he may seem hard to talk to, but that's because he's hard to hear. Friedric would greatly appreciate being approached rather than talking first. He's used to looking over his shoulder due to his Backstory, however, he is slowly starting to calm down on that. He is Asexual/Biromantic.

Backstory: He was born to serve and was slated to be a butler for some Higher Noble Family, but his roots from Rockaria had made him have an itch for Rebellion. His younger brother ended up taking his place. When he studied, they tried to send him to A School for Classical style of Music, but he fled to his Mother's side of his family, and studied in Rockaria, eventually graduated the Rockarian School. His father did not approve of such actions and had bounty hunters sent to retrieve him. As such, he would hang out around the Arenas to practice his music and test his abilities, especially with the bands that could be seen around. It was during his time in the Arenas that he developed his style more so, after hearing what was around him, and took them to a volume of Eleven. During this time, his proficiency in his style attracted the attention. (The Brother could be a Butler for Either Roni or Seb's Family.)

Music Style: Metal (From Rock? Need confirmation on this)

https://youtu.be/Ckom3gf57Yw?si=Ku7NvTfvU3RrTi9E (Metallica - The Unforgiven (Official Music Video)) (Metallica's The Unforgiven)

Weapons (if any): An Axe Guitar. Normally plays the guitar, but if thrown in a close combat Situation, he will turn the guitar on its end and use the guitar as a Battle Axe.

Magic & Techniques:

Resounding Boom: He can use a very loud Melody to cast this, anyone within Earshot has to keep their ears shut or face defeaning for a short time. Anyone within a short distance may be straight up blown away by how Loud it is.

Fortissimo: He can use this to make other spells more effective by making them a bit louder.

Pianissimo- He can use this to reduce effectiveness or use the spell more stealthily as necessary.

Utter Chaos: This Melody is played with the intent to confuse those around him. This Melody is very wild, and full of Dominant seventh Chords and other confusing sounding chords.

Name: Emi Rocksong

Age: 24

Region: Folkloria (is Mixed with Jazzarian blood, due to explanations in Backstory).

Appearance: Emi is on an athletic and curvaceous frame, her frame bearing armor from Folkloria when doing her work. She is 5'11", with a dark complexion. Her frame has scars to it due to her Military background from various jobs in the Military, her hair is a light grey, which is tied and brought around in formal wear, reaching her chest. Her formal wear is a red dress whose upper body clings to Emi's, however, it flows out a bit from there. Her normal clothes are something typically worn by the blacksmiths of Folkloria, thick clothing that can handle

Personality: Emi is a very watchful individual, and due to her Law Enforcement background, is likely to take watch on a camp. She could serve as a voice of reason, but if those she protects or those she cares about are hurt, this will fly out the window. She is one of the last people you want to piss off, and one of the last the average civilian doesn't want to mess with. She knows how to turn off people who want to try and date her, and if you are serious, she may challenge you. She is Heterosexual, but seems Disinterested until she loses a Duel against you.

Backstory: Emi was born in high Nobility that had met in Multivera, and is an Only Child of her parents. Her father died when she was three, and due to her mother's death not long after, she was thrown on the streets due to her cruel Grandmother and Aunt. While she was on the streets, her Aunt found her again, and used some sort of dissonant Magic that threw her off to completely seal off her ability to Use Magic. Most people wouldn't Accept her, however, The School in Folkloria helped her with as many of her language issues as they could. Thanks to them, she found out about several things, such as the Sealing of her magic. Her own motivation was finding out the how the sealing of her magic worked, and seeing if the council can unseal her magic. She is currently working for the Police in Folkloria, doing what one would consider special operations and bounty hunting, as of currently, based on rumors, she was hunting the location of The Highway King, if found, she would trail them to make sure they don't do anything that would cause alarm. Part of her desires is to get her family home back, and get restored to her Nobility title. Emi's reassignment was due to several things, her potential, her Sealed Magic's possible return, and her keeping an Eye on The Highway King. She was given a Horse, an Appaloosa named Shel, by her captain when she joined her unit. She started training for the Police around Age 16, and did so to accelerate her training when she did officially join. She's been the Police for Six years

Music Style: Medieval (Magic is Sealed).

Weapons (if any): a Lute, which she can use as a bludgeoning weapon if absolutely necessary. Otherwise, a Broadsword, which is forged with the Help of strings of various instruments as the core, and normal steel for the outer blade.

Magic & Techniques: Is in excellent physical shape due to being unable to use magic. She was most likely Military, sent to deal with stronger threats. This Joining the Vanguard was most likely a simple reassignment for her.

She has a few Spells that she can perform as her magic starts unsealing itself through the RP. I plan on her power unsealing in several stages.

Nature Power (Sealed, unlocks first): This small, slow tune is played in natural weather effects, allowing her to connect her Greatsword to Nature itself, which gives her Greatsword an effect based on the weather.

Nature's Cure (Sealed, Unlocks second): This Melody can be used to give a low level healing with the help of plants. The spell used does different things based on the plant.

Will list more spells later as I come up with them, or Lore drop comes up with them.

She also can use Longswords, Rapiers, And Broadswords along with hand to hand Combat proficiently. Those were from Folklorian Law Enforcement training.

Backstory: Born and raised in the vibrant heart of Rhapsodia, Zara, known as "Reverb," grew up amidst the rhythmic beats and urban graffiti that defined her bustling district. From a young age, she exhibited an undeniable talent for rhythm and music, showcasing a dynamic energy that captivated her community.

Zara soon became the charismatic leader of the "Harmony Riders," a gang renowned for their unique blend of peacekeeping, community support, and a distinct urban style. Their streetwise wisdom and commitment to harmony through music made them legends in their pocket of Rhapsodia.

When the Melodic Council's call for the Vanguard reached Zara's ears, it struck a chord deep within her. The opportunity to embark on a world-spanning quest to preserve Harmonia's harmony through the power of music was a dream that resonated with her core beliefs.

Zara saw the Council's mission as a chance to unite the regions, harnessing the strength of their unique musical traditions to combat the growing threats of discord and dissonance. Her motivation is two-fold: to bring her unique style of unity and peacekeeping to the wider world and to inspire others with the dynamic energy of Rhapsodia's urban culture.

She sees this journey as a way to prove that the power of music can transcend boundaries, uniting even the most diverse of regions. Zara's presence in the Vanguard brings her vibrant energy and urban flair to the group, ready to lead her fellow members in preserving Harmonia's unique harmony.

Sonic-Powered Skates: Her rollerblades are equipped with sonic propulsion systems, allowing her to move at incredible speeds and make rapid, evasive maneuvers. The skates produce a trail of dazzling musical notes and light effects as she moves, creating both an offensive and stylish spectacle.

Magic & Techniques:

Visualization of Magical Energy:
Zara possesses the innate ability to see and visualize the flow of magical energy in the environment. This allows her to perceive the intricate patterns and harmonious currents of magic in Harmonia, much like seeing vibrant, ever-changing musical compositions.

Despite this, she's struggled with magic through childhood into adolescence, and doesn't know any actual spells yet, having learned to rely on physical feats and technology instead.

Name: Achelous O Ruaidh

Age: 27

Region: Folkloria

Appearance: Achelous is a tall man, standing at around 6'4 inches tall, and is fairly large, doing most of the physical work at his abode. Achelous has brown skin, curly brown hair, and amber eyes. Achelous usually wears a blue-plaid shirt, while he wears suspenders. He wears knee-high brown work boots, and wears a sling bag, carrying most of his daily needs.

Personality: Achelous is a down-to-earth person, living with nature, which usually leads to him using natural materials and making makeshift items, using his resourcefulness and creativity. He is a kind-hearted person, and usually helps lost travelers outside of the forest of where he lives, or even lets them inside the comfort of his home to rest. Achelous is a kind giant, being a pacifist by nature, although if pushed to it, he will comeback with an attack stronger than those who attacked him, or his friends.

Backstory: Since birth, Achelous was born in the forests near the capital of Folkloria, living with his parents, always being close to nature. Since music is so important in Harmonia, not only was Achelous taught music, but he was also taught to protect nature, and use its benefits not only to benefit himself, but also the environment itself. His parents would gift him his own harp, and he would usually play it outside almost daily.

Once he grew older, Achelous inherited his father's shield, which he now uses as he works in the Vanguard, being scouted due to his musical prowess without having a proper education in any institutes, and his rounded-out spells, and defensive capabilities.

Music Style: Folk Music

Weapons: Achelous carries a small harp made of wood, with his name carved into it, given to him by his parents. Along with that, Achelous has a large shield made out of wood that he carries around, made from the magic of music, making it a bit sturdier and does not easily burn.

Magic & Techniques:
Achelous is fairly strong physically and can take a few strong hits from magic attacks. Along with that, Achelous is also skilled in music-based attacks, although he mostly uses spells that aren't directly hurting others and uses them for crowd control, or support-based spells.

Nature's Blessing
Achelous plays a melody of folk songs on his harp, healing nearby allies and repairing wood-based items in the area. [Difficulty: 4/10]

Brush of Thorns
Achelous plays discordant notes that makes a weird melody, which put nearby plants in a frenzy, which makes them act like bear traps to those who step on them, rendering them unable to move. [Difficulty: 3/10]

Child of the Woods
Whenever Achelous plays any folk-based spell, vines will appear, and attack nearby enemies. [Difficulty: 0/10]

Protection of the Wilds
When Achelous plays a fast-tempo folk song, his shield becomes larger and more durable, although this spell is a bit harder to use for Achelous. [Difficulty: 7/10]

Name: Mavis Feng

Age: 21

Region: Rhapsodia (though she also uses techniques from Harmonium, since that’s where her mother is from and where she lived for most of her formative years)

Appearance: Mavis has dark purple, almost black hair. When untied, it reaches the middle of her back. She has dark gray eyes. She wears a muted collared blouse and a plaid skirt, as well as a face mask that she takes off when she sings.

Personality: Mavis sometimes struggles to communicate her thoughts with others in a polite way, making her seem like a bit of a shrinking violet to strangers. However, she enjoys watching and analyzing how people use their magic, and her overenthusiasm in this regard is perhaps what leads her to be considered offbeat. She has an impeccable ability to read the social atmosphere, though her ability to communicate (or lack thereof) somewhat dampens that skill.

Backstory: Both her mother and father were skilled performers at their own craft (her father as a street performer with little formal training yet heaps of raw talent, and her mother as a trained professional who took to training others as well). She spent most of her childhood in Harmonium with her mother after her parents parted ways, but she grew up as a bit of an outsider there due to taking after her father’s more relaxed ideas of etiquette and culture. Though she was never bullied or derided for her preference towards Rhapsodia’s music, she was often regarded as a strange individual. She had a talent for singing just like her parents, but this worsened her self-esteem due to the high expectations piled upon her. She applied for a Harmony Institute instead of a Musical Academy to escape those expectations. Though her skill with magic was middling at first, it was liberating for her to not have to meet a bar that felt impossibly high. She worked hard and graduated with high marks, wherein she was recruited as a singer for a group in Rhapsodia, which quickly became rather popular. She joined the Melodic Vanguard in order to expand her worldview and be exposed to more emotions, which can drastically increase the effectiveness of her singing and her magic.

Music Style: J-pop (Vocaloid is also on the table here, but none of these songs are Vocaloid songs)

Examples: What Sort of Ending Are You Wishing For?, Gira Gira, Blessing

Weapons: She’s best with instruments that have keyboards, but they’re too unwieldy for her to carry more than one of. Instead, she prefers to sing and simply use a microphone, and she has one keyboard for backup.

Magic & Techniques: Mavis’ abilities are mainly centered around her ability to express emotions, which has been stunted due to her time in Harmonium.
Mimic: Mavis has perfect pitch, allowing her to mimic the abilities of others (including her enemies), though the mimic ability is usually less effective due to not using the same instrument.

Mastery of Lyrics: When she sings a song, the way she expresses the lyrics can cause different buffs to activate on her and her allies. She has an offensive variant that allows her to project emotions into enemies’ minds, debuffing them.

Commander of Song: Depending on the song she sings, the offensive capability will vary, but she can summon objects or beings associated with the song (that she can visualize) and control them for a short period of time. Her stamina drains much faster when using this ability.

Hmm... yup I'll be working on a character soon~ You don't have to ask me twice for a music/fantasy story~

...Somehow, despite all the details you have worked out, I feel like it'll be difficult for me to figure out a backstory...~
So, couple questions.
One, roughly how old would students at/graduates of Harmony Institutes or Musical Academies be? Do those take the place of middle/high school? Or are they more like universities? Or can anyone of any age enroll? How many years would they be there?
Two, you mentioned "underground arenas" in the description for Rockaria. Would I be correct in assuming by arena you do indeed mean a place for friendly musical competition?

Thank you for your interest! I'll start whipping up a character now to help as a guide. Also, I'll create a spoiler in the first post for any questions asked so they can be quickly accessed

1697285072695.png

When under the guise of Aurelio, he uses an appearance-modifying spell, causing him to don a golden masquerade mask, his garments morphing into an obnoxiously bright, equally aureate suit

1697285963942.png
1697285904697.png

Can one go to a Harmony Institute/Musical Academy and then, after graduating, go to one of the other?

Yes, though higher education (the especially good Musical Academies are great examples of this) can be quite expensive, as you'd imagine.

Oftentimes each region has schemes in place to help their citizens get into higher education by alleviating some costs etc. but even so, the whole endeavor can easily burn a whole in the pockets of many, so many opt to get straight to work after graduation.

Well, this seems like an interesting concept for an RP. Though, I do have some questions to ask:

2. What defines Rhapsodia as a melting pot? Does it mean that it is most known for the fusion/hybrid genre, or that it's essentially a culmination of all the different cultures and musical styles of the other parts of the world?

And I do have one more question, but this one's more of a personal once since it's directly tied to a character I may drop in here: In relation to the third question, would it be alright to make an enigma of a character who takes up such a genre that's not listed in any of the regions for being known and build that character's story, personality, etc. around this unknown music/culture?

In relation to the third question, would it be alright to make an enigma of a character who takes up such a genre that's not listed in any of the regions for being known and build that character's story, personality, etc. around this unknown music/culture?

Of course, be my guest. With how vast the styles and regions are, its easy to imagine that many lesser known ones can fall by the wayside. A concept like that has great potential.

Highway King.jpg

Accepted! I like this one - listening to the examples (especially GET ME POWER) really helped me envision what he'd look like in action, and it was great.

Name: Helen Belle

Age: 27

Region: Operatica

Appearance:
generated image

Weapons: She has a electrified lasso.

Magic & Techniques: Roni can absorb the powers of those around her and combine them to create a remixed power, she can wield 3 remixed powers at one time, with the oldest being removed to make way for the 4th and so on. The prosthetic in her spine is connected to her nervous system using nanobots that have since spread and strengthened her muscle tissue and skin across her whole body making her stronger and more durable, to be specific she can withstand most blades but she isn't bullet proof and she is strong enough to punch through a brick wall but not bend metal.

I have a question before I create a character.

Are there mythical creatures that exist in Harmonia? Something like centaurs, dragons, etc? Wanted to see if characters like that could exist in Harmonia, or only humans (and normal animals) are in Harmonia?

@GLITCHSKULL A much lighter bio, so I look forward to more about Poe being revealed as the story progresses! Accepted.

@Void_Nugget Accepted! Very turbulent and engaging backstory, interesting to see how that'll play out.

Seeing as how both Roni and Seb were born to influential families in Harmonium, I'm thinking they'd be old acquaintances (perhaps they met during social engagements or some such) and fell out of contact after her accident?

I also find it funny how many of these chars wear masks/helmets etc. though I suppose it would help keep the Vanguard lowkey

Let me know if things need changed @RhythmThief

Let me know if things need changed @RhythmThief

Both are lovely chars, and yes, Metal would find its home in Rockaria. Accepted! Looks like the Vanguard is quite populated now, so I'll begin working on a (probably huge) first post!

I think Friedric's lil bro being a butler for Roni's family would be pretty strong. Perhaps they were good friends up until Roni's disappearance, and so maybe throughout the RP the butler could be secretly (or maybe at the behest of Roni's family) looking for her.

It could be a nice side-plot unravelling in tandem with the main one, whaddya think?

When the Melodic Council's call for the Vanguard reached Zara's ears, it struck a chord deep within her. The opportunity to embark on a world-spanning quest to preserve Harmonia's harmony through the power of music was a dream that resonated with her core beliefs.

Zara saw the Council's mission as a chance to unite the regions, harnessing the strength of their unique musical traditions to combat the growing threats of discord and dissonance. Zara possesses the innate ability to see and visualize the flow of magical energy in the environment. This allows her to perceive the intricate patterns and harmonious currents of magic in Harmonia, much like seeing vibrant, ever-changing musical compositions.

Despite this, she's struggled with magic through childhood into adolescence, and doesn't know any actual spells yet, having learned to rely on physical feats and technology instead.

this took me so long to make. I DONT KNOW HOW!!! (writer's block)

Would he know about Emi, given both are Folklorian.

Who knows? LOL. Although it would be fun if they knew each other since she would probably pass through the forests near Serenadale a lot as apart of the Folkloria Police Force. Like if they knew eachother I would 100% headcanon that she would come over to Achelous' house for tea every few weeks to take some stress off of her work LOL

Do we have a description for the council HQ? Skimmed through most of the posts so far and there isn't a definitive description for it yet, right? If you (@RhythmThief ) already have an idea in mind do you mind sending it? Unless you want us to visualize it ourselves.

Was just reading through the posts and thought of something, @RhythmThief you mentioned a class trip in your post and I believe you referenced Roni, just wanted to inquire what age Seb was for this memory as there is a 6 year difference between Roni and Seb.
